Seth Cary has compiled a genealogy of the family and descendants of John Carey, who had settled in Duxbury, Massachusetts, by 1637. The author made an effort to follow female as well as male lines. In the early generations, this generally extended to the children and sometimes grandchildren of a Cary daughter. In the later generations, and especially in the accounts of those living in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this coverage was quite extensive.

As with so many genealogies compiled a century or more ago, the greatest value is in the vital records for those born in the nineteenth century, as these would have been collected from living individuals with reliable knowledge of the events, at a time when many states did not yet have centralized recording of vital events.

An unusual feature of this volume is the placement of the index of names at the beginning of the genealogy rather than the end.
