is there an way, using TMG v9, to create a list of people based on a certain Flag. I have added a flag for military service of individuals as to what War they served in. Example: I would like to create a list of all people in my database that served in the Revolutionary War (added flag). Can anyone help?

Missing Exhibit Files

Was wondering if one of you experts could help me. So I have a large Exhibit file and when I do a backup on a project I get a message that backup was complete but "5 Exhibit Files not found". What does this mean? Thanks a bunch!

How to Get Rid of UK Version?

I got a call from a 90-YO lady that has installed on a new PC, and TMG opens as the UK version. I think that means she managed to use a UK installer.

I had her download and install the US version, but it still opens as the UK version. So I had her uninstall and then install again with the US installer and it still opens as the UK version. Does that mean that the files that cause TMG to open as UK didn't get removed by the uninstall?

How to get back to the US version??

TMG hanging on startup (new issue January 2026)

TMG is now hanging on startup. The program starts and shows the menus, but hangs when trying to load the project. This appears to be occuring on multiple computers and with multiple projects. If the Internet connection is turned off before starting TMG, everything starts correctly. Thus, my guess is that the hanging on loading the project may be caused by TMG trying to connect to a server before loading the project.

Anybody have an idea if something changed this month to cause this issue? Any workaround other than turning off your Internet connection before starting TMG?

Repository Index Error

Hope you are still monitoring this Forum, Jim Byram??

My main project which I have been using for decades has developed a new error. I hope you can help.

I create a new source, go to its Attachments tab, click on the '+' to add a repository, TMG pops up the Repository Link Entry Screen. I then click on the 'binocs' to select a repository and get the error:

Index does not match the table. Delete the index file and
re-create the index. 20
FRMREPOSITORY2_RNLISTROWS_ASSIGN

If I click "Ignore" the Master Repository List pops open and I am able to select an link a repository to the source. Further any later attempts to link a repository during that TMG session do not produce the error. But if I exit and reopen TMG I get the error.

I have done all the maintenance routines, including reindex, and even deleted all CDX files to have them recreated. Has no effect on this error.

Any suggestions? I hate running with an existing repeatable error.

I followed your advice from other posts and tried running the installer in Repair mode. No effect.

Problems With Restore on Version 9.05

When I try to restore a backup that I created on my laptop, I get the following message:

Variable 'LATEMP' is not found 44

FRMWIZRESTORE.WIZPAGEFRAME1.PAGE1.COM.INI

I am using TMG V 9.05 and back up my file to C:\TMG Backups

I have no idea what is causing this problem and would greatly appreciate any help you can give me on what to do about it. Thanks so much!

When I attempted to open my project after a few weeks, the first thing I noticed was that TMG opened in repair mode. then the problems began. I don't have anywhere near the computer skills you have but am a long time user of TMG and I kind of lost without it.

I made my last backup on 29 Aug 2025. Perhaps , unfortunately, that backup was sent to Microsoft's OneDrive (external drive). I am able to retrieve that file and it appears be to just fine (jpivey 2025-08-29 10-23-16.sqz). When I attempt to restore that file to TMG, it first appears that everything looks find ( I can see flashes of files being restored in the top right of the restore screen), then it goes to the next restore screen and asks the locations I want, etc, than the restore screen asks about configuration and timelines, and the last screen asks about type of files, to be restored, and finally I press "finish". I get this error message: 'DyanZip error: Error creating output file (problem extracting file(s). I also note that after that, the TMG program locks up.

I've been struggling with this problem for over a week now and have made no progress, I would appreciate any help you can send my way,

TMG V9 Registration Data Invalid

Repetitive Request For Serial Number

Some months ago I lost access to TMG but eventually located my email from years ago with my serial number. As soon as I entered the number everything worked fine. However, each month it asks that I enter the serial number again. Does anyone know why? Also, how can I stop this annoying repetitive request to enter my serial number? I have a copy of the email sent to me when I upgraded to V9 with the S/N and shortly after the product was discontinued.

Variable ‘GOTERM’ is not found error

I have installed TMG 9.05 on a fresh install of Windows 11 on a new Mac running Parallels Desktop. Upon running TMG, I get the error message Variable ‘GOTERM’ is not found. I’ve tried repairing the install as well as reinstalling, but the error persists. What can I do to fix this? Thanks in advance for any help.

This is a plea for Jim Byrum's help based on a recommendation from Michael Hannah.

When I generate a Journal, I get the following line

"There were no known children of Lemuel Alexander Donnell (20)and the unknown spouse mentioned above."

I worked with Michael , looking for a missing "primary" marriage and other things. That did not fix this issue, although it appears it did fix another. There was also a residence tag that appeared in the BMDB section of Lemuel's (20) report.

Michael also recommended I send a copy of the TMG backup, but I'll wait until I see if Jim is still checking up on TMG issues..

I just upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11. After the upgrade TMG 9.05 runs fine, but without any warning it crashes. The Windows event log says this:

Place Style not sticking

Lately, when I add an event Tag with Repeat Key of place fields I have just used, I get a display of the Edit Place Style window showing the Output Template “<[Addressee], ><[Detail], ><[Village/Area], ><[Town/City], ><[State], ><[Country], ><[Postal], ><[Phone], ><[Coordinates], ><[Temple]>”. This is usually after I change the Tag Place Style from U.S. Place style in the Tag to UK Standard Place Style. If I hit [Reset] and again [OK], I get the question “The name for this already exists. Are you sure that you want to save it anyway?”. I reply [Yes] and then get the query “The place already exists with a style of “<[Addressee], ><[Detail], ><[Village/Area], ><[Town/City], ><[State], ><[Country], ><[Postal], ><[Phone], ><[Coordinates], ><[Temple]>”. Change the place style to “<[Addressee], ><[Detail], ><[Village/Area], ><[Town/City], ><[State], ><[Country], ><[Postal], ><[Phone], ><[Coordinates], ><[Temple]>”? Click “No” to keep the style already associated with this place. So I click “No” and the Tag is saved with the “UK Standard Place Style” as desired.

As implied above the place is already in the Master Place List with the UK Standard Place Style. So why this “run-around”?

France Timeline

I have created a new Timeline for France based on Judy Jacobson's "History for Genealogists". There may be some errors in it, but the brief trials I have made show some interesting information when looking at my French ancestors. I am attaching a ZIP file of the timeline for those interested. Spliting 1 TMG Data Base into 2

Over the years, I've built 1 large database that includes both my family and my wife's. I have had thoughts of spliting the 2 families and wondering if there is a right way and a wrong way to accomplish this. Has anybody out there ever done this with TMG v9? Is it even possible?

Maybe someone out there can give some advice as to how to approach this task if possible at all. Maybe you can just tell me if I'm crazy for trying...

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Name Styles

I have some Name Styles that I want to delete, but if I delete the Style, the Default Style will be assigned and I want to be sure that the Default Style is correct.

Is there any way to create a report (probably List of People or List of Names or “?”) that showed the Name Style of each person. This might be for all people/names (sorted by Name Style) or for a select few by filter.

Sample project missing

TMG crashed for reasons unknown. I have checked and it's working fine, no issues, or corrupt files, no error messages. The only thing I have noticed is that the sample file box is greyed out, and when I checked the folder the project files are in, the folder is empty. I have downloaded and run the installation repair, but nothing happened

I don't use or refer to the sample project very often, but I do every so often to check something or find out how to do something. Is anyone able to send me a copy I can put in there (I'm running the UK version, 9.05).

TMG to the Bitter End

I have been using TMG for so long (since about Version 3) that I intend to continue using it until it just won't work anymore. I find myself wondering, just how many of us diehards are out there. I just (with a little help) loaded Version 9.05 to a new laptop, so I am pretty sure I will get several more years use out of it. I have reached a point in my research where I am writing research papers more than actual research, and I find the TMG reports very useful for that (mostly the individual narrative and family group sheets, but also the journal report). But, I also know there must be life after TMG and I want to be able to pass my years of research along in a usable database. Consequently, I purchased a copy of Roots Magic (because it has an "Import from TMG" capability), as a future back up. When I backup TMG, I import that backup into Roots Magic, and store the resulting file in a way it will be available, should the need arise. But, I am not entirely sure this is the best scheme, and I am wondering if other have made similar provisions.

New Laptop Installation

Not sure this is very active anymore. I got a new laptop last June, for TMG. I had so many issues on the install, I quit, and it has been sitting here unused for 11 mos. Fastforward: my 5 yr old Dell is really wonky and on it's way out. Display keeps going black. I need to get my DB to a new machine.

So today I am trying again. The old install shows as OS (C:)>Program Files(x86)> The Master Genealogist v9 and then all the folders show under that folder.

Old machine I look under This PC> Users>2390> Documents> The Master Genealogist v9> my Backups and Exhibits, config files are all there.

My new laptop shows I go to This PC> Windows (C:)>Program Files (x86)> The Master Genealogist v9> all the folders are there and fine.

If I look under This PC, I have to hit Windows(C;) first, then Users> 2390> Documents...it is completely empty. no Folders whatsoever.

My old laptop shows under Backup Data Wizard:
C:\Users\2390\Documents\The Master Genealogist v9\Projects\MergedFamily_.PJC

Suggestions?

I'm running TMG 9.05 on Windows 10. Recently I dis a backup of my project and then deleted it and restored to a version from previously in the day. Now I'm getting this message, and sometimes others as well:

If I ignore it then I get this

If I ignore it then I get the same error again but with 55, ignore again and I get 58 and then it goes away.

Just previous to this I double clicked to go to another person.

What causes this and how can I fix it? See attached trouble.txt.

When using the relationship chart function, I notice that selecting a child of cousins and another individual yields only the male line for the child of cousins.

Is there any way to see multiple lines of relationships or just, say, the mother cousin's line?

Newly installed on new computer....very slow

Hi. I just purchased a new computer (Windows 11) and I am having troubles installing TMG (gold v 9.05).

I have all the data restored (I think!) but it takes nearly 30 minutes to download and open. It used to open almost straight away. Any thoughts on what I can do to solve this problem please?

Adding Ancestors to Focus Group Question

OK, so I've read the Help topic on adding someone to the Focus group I'm creating, and on the right side of the Focus Group window there is a section to "Add Others." The Help topic said to select one individual that's already in the Focus Group and then select either "Ancestors" and/or "Descendants", and/or "Spouses" and how many generations to look through, and then click the "Add Others" button. I selected "Ancestors" and "Spouses" (250 generations) and clicked on the "Add Others" button. The only individual that was added was the spouse of the individual I selected to start with. What gives? Where am I going wrong?
