TMG Utility is the essential companion program for The Master Genealogist (TMG), and it's free! Among other things, TMG Utility makes bulk edits to TMG datasets. It is very useful for people moving their genealogy database from another product to TMG. After using GenBridge™, TMG's excellent direct import technology, use TMG Utility to manipulate your data to take advantage of some of TMG's advanced features. TMG Utility Version 6.0 works with both TMG Version 5 and TMG Version 6.0 projects. You may download TMG Utility from this page: http://www.johncardinal.com/tmgutil/ Feature list: http://www.johncardinal.com/tmgutil/toc.htm List of changes: http://www.johncardinal.com/tmgutil/versions.htm Other TMG companion programs: http://www.johncardinal.com/tmg/ === GedStar PRO v2.0 released ==================== The following update announcement is from GHCS Software, one of our development partners: GHCS Software has released V2.0 of its "GedStar Pro" application for PDA devices running the PalmOS operating system. This program extracts almost all of the data directly from a PC-based genealogy program and formats it for quick and easy viewing on the user's handheld device. This design allows GedStar Pro to operate without the need to export a GEDCOM file, making it very easy to use. Currently supported genealogy programs include The Master Genealogist, Legacy Family Tree, Family Tree Maker, and Personal Ancestral File. "With V2.0 we have added a number of often asked-for features to the handheld program," says Doug Gordon, developer of the GedStar line of products. "This includes a more powerful name-search feature with Soundex support, several new lists of resources, a data export function, and even an "On-This-Day" feature that shows events that occurred on a particular day of the year." GedStar Pro v2.0 is available as a free update for existing registered users of GedStar Pro v1. Note that after installing the update, you will have to re-convert any databases that you are using because the internal format on the handheld has changed. You can get the update from: http://www.ghcssoftware.com/gedstarpro.htm For more information or to purchase GedStar PRO v2.0, please visit: http://www.WhollyGenes.com/gedstarpro.htm === PathWiz! To unsubscribe, see the end of the newsletter. Please do not respond to this message. Its mailbox is for outgoing messages only. See "How to reach us" below. ================================================== HAPPY NEW YEAR! In this issue: o TMG Version 6 o Trouble placing an order? o Support email is temporarily backlogged o Special Offers end January 31st o Known Bugs o PathWiz! Version 4 released o TMG Workshops o Member map enhancements o TMG Companion Products o Wholly Genes online chat o How to reach us o How to unsubscribe === TMG Version 6 ================================ TMG v6.0 is a hit and thousands of users are happily enjoying its great new features. "TMG 6.0 I'm in Heaven! There are so many of the new features I had been begging for that I don't even know where to start." Teresa in Alabama "I will say right now that I *love* the new columns that indicate whether an exhibit or a task is attached to a Tag. That is wonderful!" Elizabeth in Texas "It was worth waiting on pins and needles for this. It's AWESOME!" Linda in Arizona If you missed the previous newsletter, you can find a description and screen shots of the new features in TMG v6 here: http://www.WhollyGenes.com/tmgnew6.htm TMG v5 users can download and apply the v6 upgrade for $24.95. A CD-ROM is available for an additional $10.00, which includes the cost of shipping and handling. The CD-ROM also includes a free electronic copy of the "The Universal British Directory of Great Britain 1791," a $65 value. To purchase the upgrade, please visit: http://www.WhollyGenes.com/tmg6upgrade.htm Then use the "Check for an update" feature on the TMG v5 Help menu in order to easily download and apply the update. NOTE: If you purchased TMG v5 from a local dealer, then you may be able to obtain the v6 update from the same source. Users who purchased an upgrade or full copy of TMG v5.x after 21 September 2004 will automatically receive a free update to TMG v6. Please allow 2 weeks for delivery of free upgrades. CD-ROM shipments have begun. === Trouble placing an order? ========================= To qualify for the TMG v6 upgrade price, you must enter your valid TMG v5 serial number on the order page. If you have had trouble with that process, then note the following advice. 1) Please don't try to enter the 32-digit number by hand. It is a long number and it is much too easy to make a mistake. Instead... A) Find the original email that was sent to you with the serial number for TMG v5. (The subject of that message probably starts with "Serial number for The Master Genealogist..."). Cut and paste the serial number into the web store. -OR- In TMG, access Help > Technical Support and then click on "Trouble Report". The resulting document will contain a copy of your serial number. Open that document in a word processor and cut/paste the serial number into the web store. (You can then discard the document). 2) The processes described above are much more reliable, but if you insist on entering the serial number by hand then run TMG, access Help > About The Master Genealogist and transcribe the serial number on that screen into the web store, being sure to enter 32 digits. Note that "0" and "1" are numbers, not letters. If necessary, please contact Technical Support at support@whollygenes.com (but please read the next section). === Support email is temporarily backlogged =========== Due to the surprising number of people who are having difficulty entering their TMG v5 serial numbers in the web store, the technical support email is temporarily backlogged. We're working hard to respond to those messages in the order in which they were received, so please bear with us. We appreciate your patience and we hope to catch up soon. === Special Offers End January 31st =================== Note that the announcement for the v6 upgrade included two special offers, both of which expire at the end of this month: GenSmarts at HALF PRICE: TMG v6 includes some powerful new features for users who also own a copy of the popular research advisor, GenSmarts. To help you take advantage of these great new features, your TMG v6 upgrade or full product order can now include a copy of GenSmarts for just $10.97 more! What better way is there to help your fellow researchers than to encourage them to upgrade to TMG? At the same time, you'll make it easier on yourself when exchanging data with them. At $39.50, the price of TMG Gold Edition has never been lower. A valid TMG v5 or v6 serial number is required. Your serial number uniquely identifies you and must not be shared with other researchers. Copies purchased at this promotional price may not be resold. Quoted prices include a printed Users Guide and CD-ROM but exclude shipping and handling. To take advantage of this offer, please visit: http://www.WhollyGenes.com/tmggift.htm === Known Bugs ======================================== There have been two notable issues raised by users in relation to TMG v6. These bugs and others that are brought to our attention will be fixed in the next release but, in the meantime, they have simple workarounds for those who use these features: ADDING/EDITING WITNESSES If you try to add or edit witnesses to certain event types, you may get an error message ("FRMADDWITNESS2.MSETSORTROLE"). This only happens with event types for which Principal and Witness are the only roles. That is, it does not apply to birth, baptism, marriage, death, burial, or any other event type which has additional roles. The simple solution for now is to add a custom role to any other tag type for which you want to add or edit witnesses. (Note that you don't have to USE the custom role; it merely needs to be present in the list in order to avoid the problem.) For instance, access the Tag Type List, highlight Census, and click on Edit. On the "Roles and Sentences" tab, click on New and add another role (e.g., "Child"). Now you can successfully add/edit witnesses to Census events. UK EDITION - CITATION MEMO AND REPOSITORY MEMO: New projects that are created in TMG v6 UK Edition will not include entries for the new Citation Memo and Repository Memo source elements. You can easily add them yourself, however, after which you can refer to them from the source templates. From the Tools menu, choose Source Elements and then click on Add. Now enter "CM" (without quotes) as the element name and select "Citation Memo" as the element group. Click on OK and then add another for "RM" in the Repository Memo group. Note that this problem only applies to NEW projects and not to those that were upgraded from TMG v5. === PathWiz! v4 has been released ===================== Bryan Wetton has announced an update to his exhibit utility, PathWiz! Version 4, which takes advantage of the new features in TMG v6 and adds a number of other new features. A freeware version of PathWiz! is available from the link below. The full product is $AUD 20 (approximately $US 15) and is downloadable. Following is the general product description: The PathWiz! Version 4 program is an exhibit management tool which allows you to access a TMG Version 5 or 6 project database table (dbf) containing paths to and information attached to exhibits (graphical images and other files) stored anywhere on your local PC. If you are changing computer storage arrangements or sending your backup (sqz) files to a chart printing service, you may wish to consolidate all the required image files into one folder. In addition, the ability to directly edit the Topic, Reference, Description and Caption fields of a list of related exhibits (for example, External Images attached to persons) from one screen with the ability to see the actual images, both internal and external, provided they are available. On the way a 'Comprehensive Exhibit Catalogue' may be produced both internally and in MSWord -- effectively an inventory of all exhibits. This is Bryan's announcement of the update: Take control of your TMG exhibits! Over the last months I have radically changed the user interface of PathWiz! to a wizard style and added some user requested features. - Now runs on 800 X 600 screen. - Ability to split MSWord reports into manageable sizes. - Inclusion of full Exhibit Description in MSWord report. - Opens on previous project root folder when selecting a new project. - Includes details of Place and Citation exhibits and all exhibits captions - Works with TMG Version 5 and Version 6 I particularly like the split report facility -- MSWord apparently has a limit on how many images can be shown in full (not place markers) where a single document would have a large number of exhibits. The full retail version is available NOW at http://www.sceya.com.au/pathwiz/index.htm Existing users of PathWiz! are being notified separately of their upgrade location. Regards Bryan === TMG Workshops in Phoenix are NOT full ======= In response to great demand, NGS has expanded the capacity of the TMG workshops at NGS' "Warm Up Your Research" conference in Phoenix, Arizona, on January 20th, 2005. Although NGS recently announced on its web site that two of the three workshops were full, they quickly reconsidered and moved the workshops to a larger room. There will be three presentations of The Master Genealogist (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced; two hours each) by Bob Velke, president of Wholly Genes Software. The topics will be presented on a screen but you can bring your laptop to follow along. There is no cost for these TMG workshops beyond the conference registration fee. The "Warm Up Your Research" conference is a three-day event with dozens of other presentations on a wide range of topics. Lectures are organized into tracks for State Research, Research Techniques, Technology, Research Basics, and Ethnic Research. There will also be an exhibitor area, daily luncheons and a banquet. Speakers include Cyndi Howells; Thomas Jones, CG, CGL; Helen Leary, CG, CGL, FNGS, FASG; J. Mark Lowe, CG; and Elizabeth Shown Mills, CG, CGL, FNGS, FASG; among many others. For more information, please visit: http://www.ngsgenealogy.org === Member Map Enhancements =========================== The Member Map is a popular new feature of the Wholly Genes Community Forum. You can use it to see where TMG users are around the world or in your local area. You can plot your own pin on the map and optionally give contact information so that TMG users in your area can find you. It is a great way to get to know other TMG users or to organize a Users Group. Now a couple of enhancements have made the Member Map even easier to use. A new option allows you to filter the pins so that only those for senior members and Users Group coordinators are visible. Also, when you point to a pin on the map with your mouse, it now displays the location of the user after his/her name. The "location" in this case is whatever you typed into your forum profile. Click on "My Controls" near the top and then on "Edit Profile info" on the left to enter a location. If you want other users in your area to be able to contact you by email, then also click on "Email Settings" on the left and make sure that "Hide my email address from other members" is UNchecked. Keep in mind that the Member Map is strictly voluntary and only reflects pins for users who have specifically chosen to use this feature. To view or use the member map, please visit: http://www.WhollyGenes.com/membermap.htm === TMG Companion Products ============================ Don't miss these helpful products that are specifically designed for TMG users like you: "Getting the Most Out of The Master Genealogist" The popular book compiled by Lee Hoffman. You can use the Query By Example screen to learn how to use TMG's more powerful filtering features. After entering some search criteria, click on the Filter tab to see how you can represent the same conditions using a filter. Then you can further customize the filter, add other conditions, etc. It is not just an alternative to filters. It is a great way to learn how to use some of TMG's most powerful features, including filter operators, AND/OR connectors, parentheses, etc. NEW DNA LOG DNA testing is getting more popular and it is destined to be one of the family historian's most valuable tools. The new DNA Log lets you record the results of DNA tests for the people in your project. You can keep track of multiple tests for each person, including the laboratory results, your own comments, and links to web sites that explain the tests. The source template can refer to [REPOSITORY MEMO], [REPOSITORY MEMO1]...[REPOSITORY MEMO9]. Shorter versions of the same variables, [RM], [RM1]...[RM9], are also supported. - All memo fields now show formatted text (bold, italics, underline, etc.), rather than codes for those functions. GENSMARTS INTEGRATION GenSmarts™ analyzes your research data and provides advice about how to fill the holes in your research. It makes detailed suggestions about what records to search, where, and why. GenSmarts users can now access this popular research advisor directly from within TMG. (Requires a separate purchase of GenSmarts.) Now you can simply access TMG's Tools menu and choose "Research suggestions from GenSmarts." TMG will leverage the power of GenSmarts to produce a list of research suggestions for the focus person. The complete explanation for each GenSmarts suggestion is also included. If the data is available online, then you can just click to access it. You can even select one or more GenSmarts suggestions and convert them into TMG research tasks with one click. When you are ready for a research trip, you can generate a List of Tasks report. And you can do it all without ever leaving TMG! OTHER NEW FEATURES - New smart place searching allows matching on partial place names. OTHER FIXES/CHANGES: The v6 upgrade includes fixes to bugs that were reported by users, including: - Backup now backs up timelines based on the default program timeline path, rather than based on the Preferences timeline path. - Fixed a possible UK Style box chart overwrapping line problem. - Fixed a problem of canceling the untabbed Tag Entry screen. - Fixed an issue where the style could be lost when saving the Place Edit screen. - The fields on the Global Search and Replace form and the MPL now use labels from the default place style, as defined on the Data Set Manager. - The Gendex site has been removed from Web search feature. - Corrected an issue of some audio and video exhibits not playing in the Exhibit Log and Slideshows. - Fixed an issue where the Automatic Relation Tag would not always select the most direct relationship. - Fixed some other issues related to translated report output. - Fixed a variety of more obscure bugs that were reported by users. SPECIAL CD BONUS The upgrade can be obtained by download but those who order the CD-ROM will also receive a free electronic copy of "The Universal British Directory of Great Britain 1791" from Archive CD Books on the same disk (a $65 value!). Digitized from five huge volumes, this is the earliest directory for Great Britain and is among the most important resources for those researching ancestors in the United Kingdom. It includes excellent descriptions of towns and villages of the time and those residents with trades (even farmers, hay-binders, labourers, bakers, shop keepers, etc.) and their addresses. Although titled "Great Britain," this directory covers places in England and Wales. Volume 1 is devoted to London, volumes 2 to 4 cover the places in England and Wales in alphabetical order, and vol 5 contains a number of the subsequent amendments that were published in the next few years. === Ordering the v6 Upgrade =========================== TMG v5 users can download and apply the v6 upgrade for $24.95. A CD-ROM is available for an additional $10.00, which includes the cost of shipping and handling. As noted above, the CD-ROM also includes a free electronic copy of the "The Universal British Directory of Great Britain 1791," a $65 value. Please allow 3 weeks for delivery of free upgrades. CD-ROM shipments are expected to begin by 3 January 2005. === GenSmarts at HALF PRICE =========================== As described above, TMG v6 includes some powerful new features for users who also own a copy of the popular research advisor, GenSmarts. To help you take advantage of these great new features, your TMG v6 upgrade or full product order can now include a copy of GenSmarts for just $10.97 more! That's more than HALF OFF the suggested retail price of $24.95 for GenSmarts! But to take advantage of this very special price, you must order TMG v6 and GenSmarts at the _same_time_. Subsequent orders do not qualify for the bundle discount. For more information about how GenSmarts can help your research, please visit: http://www.whollygenes.com/gensmarts.htm It is unlikely that you will ever find GenSmarts at this incredibly low price again! Don't miss this opportunity to tap into the research power of GenSmarts. This bundle price offer expires on 31 January 2005. === Give the Gift of TMG at HALF PRICE ================ Now you can make it easier to share data with other researchers and introduce them to the power and flexibility of The Master Genealogist v5 for HALF OFF the regular retail price. For a limited time, registered users of TMG v5 or v6 can purchase additional copies of the program at a 50% discount! Unlock codes for each additional copy will be mailed to the purchaser. Gift recipients may unlock the product with their own name and email address. Quoted prices include a printed Users Guide and CD-ROM but exclude shipping and handling. (We would have preferred to make this offer some weeks earlier and in time for the holidays, but it would not have been prudent to offer TMG v5 as a gift in light of the imminent release of TMG v6.) This half price offer expires on 31 Jan 2005, so don't delay. Order extra copies of TMG today! === Second Site v1.8 Update ============================ The following announcement is from John Cardinal, one of our development partners and the author of the popular web site construction tools, Second Site. With this release, John adds support for the new features in TMG v6 and adds a bunch of other really exciting features to Second Site. Other details, screen shots and the free download link are available here: http://www.johncardinal.com/ss/ssn019.htm Second Site Version 1.8 Released The latest release of Second Site has the following new or changed features: * The new Place Index feature creates a two-level index of the places referenced in your project. The index is linked to and from the person pages. The icing on the cake is the optional place information pages that show Place Comment text and TMG's new Place Exhibits. Please read the help page that describes the Place Index feature. Using the Place Index feature is easy, but you should have a basic understanding of how place grouping works to make the most of the Place Index feature. * New Timeline Charts show a series of events on a bar graph. Each event can be a single point in time or a date range. Now you can show graphically how the important events in your family history align with world events, or with each other. See the example chart. * Second Site Version 1.8 supports audio and video exhibits. Now you can add movies or sound clips of your ancestors to your site or CD-ROM project! * The new Custom Pages section means you can create custom pages completely within Second Site. You add a custom page to the list, and then key the contents of the page in the Editor Window. Custom pages retain the overall look of the site and include the standard links, etc., in the page headers and footers. * The User Data Folder feature now includes support for a Formats folder and a Defaults folder. Now it will be easier to those customizations separate from the program-supplied versions. * Second Site writes citation references (superscripted citation numbers) in the order indicated by TMG's Tag Entry window, i.e., Second Site supports the citation sequencing feature in TMG v6. * For all Formats except Narrative, Second Site writes witness names in the order indicated by TMG's Tag Entry window, i.e., Second Site supports witness sequencing feature in TMG v6. In Narratives, the witness sequence is determined by the event sentence. These changes, and others, are described in the Second Site Change Log. All existing customers should download this free upgrade. If you are a registered Second Site user and the About Second Site window (Help > About command) does not show the same version number and build number as above, I recommend that you download this new version and install it. You will not lose any SDF files or sites you have already made. You may need your registration information when you install the new version. === Warning - John Cardinal's Utilities =============== Please note that John Cardinal's "TMG Utility 5" is not designed for use with TMG v6 and some functions (notably the "Add Events" feature) may cause damage when operating on a TMG v6 project. We understand that John is hard at work on an update, and it should be released soon. In the meantime, we recommend against using "TMG Utility 5" on a TMG v6 project. === GedStar PRO v1.4 Upgrade ========================== The following announcement is from another of our development partners, GHCS Software, which produces GedStar PRO, the popular companion software for PalmOS users: GHCS Software announces the release of V1.4 of GedStar Pro, a genealogy viewing program for PalmOS handheld PDAs. This release features support for the direct import of data from the popular Family Tree Maker series of genealogy programs. Virtually all of the vital data in the database can be extracted for viewing on a device that can be carried in your pocket. This includes primary events, alternate events, name variations, custom events, source citations, and repository information, complete with notes and memos. The data is transferred more completely and accurately than is possible with a generalized standard such as GEDCOM. On the PDA, the data may be viewed in a number of different ways, including graphical ancestor and descendant tree views. Soundex and relationship calculators are also included. Previous versions of GedStar Pro introduced support for The Master Genealogist, Legacy Family Tree, and Personal Ancestral File. GedStar Pro uses GenBridge technology from Wholly Genes, Inc., for data import from some supported genealogy programs. Doug Gordon, developer of GedStar Pro, says "With the introduction of the Family Tree Maker module, we now have support for the 'big four' of the PC genealogy world." GedStar Pro is available for download and purchase from Wholly Genes, Inc., at http://www.whollygenes.com and from Millennia Corp. at http://www.legacyfamilytree.com. The add-on module for supporting Family Tree Maker and Personal Ancestral File is available exclusively from Wholly Genes, Inc. The developer's product web site is at http://www.ghcssoftware.com/gedstarpro.htm. Inquiries may be directed to the developer at support@gedstar.com. === TMG Workshops ===================================== If you can get to the Phoenix, Arizona, area on 20-22 January 2005, then we encourage you to come to the "Warm Up Your Research" conference hosted by the National Genealogical Society (NGS). 4. Be consistent in data entry Applies to: TMG Tip: In order to obtain the best results from TMG (or any program), you should be consistent in how you enter your data. By being consistent, you can more easily generate reports based on the information you have entered since similar data will be entered in the same way and in the same fields. Before you enter your data, consider how you want certain data to appear in your data set. For example, you may want to spell out all state entries, or you may want to place the modifier "County" or its abbreviation "Co." with the County name in the County field. There are many other items to be considered, some about which you may feel strongly and some about which you really don't care. But if you decide before you do a lot of work, then things will be easier later. Of course, if you have just imported (or are about to) data from another program, then you will also want to have the data-entry standards defined before you do your clean-up in TMG.
  5. What are the advantages to being a member of the forum? Answer: As a guest to the Wholly Genes Community Forum, you can access many of the forum resources and read messages but many other useful features are only available to you if you register as a member. Registering is free and easy and it allows you to: write or respond to messages in most forums; identify messages that are new since your last visit; get e-mail notifications of new topics; get e-mail notifications of updates to topics that interest you; send and receive private messages with other board members; plot your location on the Member Map; create a custom signature and graphic (avatar); access members-only areas; and more. Click here to register as a member of the Wholly Genes Community Forum.
  6. How can I get rid of the little black dots on a box chart? Applies to: TMG5 Answer: When you generate a box chart (ancestors, descendant, or hourglass) there is a series of little black dots around the perimeter of each box. Those dots are "connection ports" and they serve as visual clues, marking the various places on the box to which you can attach custom lines. You can turn them off while viewing the chart (View > Ports) but that will only affect the current chart. If you want the connection ports to be invisible for every new chart, then change the options within the report definition itself. That is, on the Report Definition Screen, click on the Options button, access the Other tab, and uncheck the box that says "Visible connection ports." Now the connection ports will be invisible on every new chart that is generated with that report definition. (By turning them off, you simply make the black dots invisible but the connection ports are still there.)
  7. Make TMG run faster

The "Performance Recommendations" feature (on the File > Maintenance menu) analyzes your TMG configuration and notes any glaring issues that may be affecting program performance. Changing the settings of the Accent feature, Age Column, or Auto-Relation tag, for instance, may dramatically improve performance. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 12 December 2003.
  8. You can see two different views of the SAME chart. When viewing a chart, simply access the Window menu and choose "New window." A second window will open with another view of the same chart. Use the Window menu again to Tile or Cascade the windows. You might then "Zoom to Fit" (from the View menu) for one of the windows while leaving the other zoomed in. When you edit the chart using the window that is zoomed in, you'll see the effect on the "big picture" in the other window. (Note that the second window doesn't contain a copy of the chart. It displays a second view of the same chart - so any change in one will affect the other). This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 22 December 2003.
  9. You can print a watermarked message on every page of PDF output. You can use it to discourage unauthorized distribution of your data or to communicate any other important message to the reader. In addition to specifying the message to be printed, you can control the font, size, position, orientation, and even color of the watermark. Just specify that the report output should be to a "Acrobat (PDF)" file and then click on the Properties button. To see some watermark samples, go to the Sample Reports page and click on "General Reporting Features" in the first column and "Watermark" or "Watermark2" in the second column. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 22 December 2003.
  10. You don't have to remember to check for TMG updates. You can configure TMG so that it automatically checks for updates every few days (or any interval that you specify). To use this option, access File > Preferences > Program Options > Startup and Exit. Now if the specified period has passed when you next open TMG, it will automatically check the web site and let you know if a new version of the program is available for downloading. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 22 December 2003.
  11. The Master Genealogist (TMG) is free to certified genealogists. Tell your friends! Any researcher holding a current certification from the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG) or the International Commission for the Acceditation of Professional Genealogists (ICAPGen) can get a free copy of TMG v5 Gold Edition by simply writing to freetmg@whollygenes.com. (Sorry, no other certification or professional experience qualifies at this time). This offer comes to you from Wholly Genes Software, which is not affiliated with the Board for Certification of Genealogists or ICAPGen. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 3 February 2004.
  12. You can distinguish between the source of the date and the source of the place. The surety fields in TMG provide you a way to specify which elements of the event came from which source(s). You can independently cite the source(s) for the identity of the two principals, the date, place, and memo (i.e., "1 2 D P M"). In this way, you can also document that the date is more reliable than the place, for instance. Among other uses of the surety fields, you can specify when generating a report that it should include only data which meets a certain threshold of reliability. So reports that are intended for your own use at the library/courthouse might include all of the speculative evidence while reports that are intended for public view (e-mail, published articles, web pages) can include only the most reliable data. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 3 February 2004.
  13. Choose the best Picklist

There are two versions of the Picklist. The Simple Picklist is the default and will come up when you click on the binoculars in the main toolbar (or press F2). It provides a quick-and-dirty alphabetical list of everyone in the project. But there is another choice. The Expanded Picklist offers even more information, including an "Event Mode" with which you can view a miniature version of the Person View for each person as you move within the list. The Expanded Picklist also has the distinct advantage of supporting the Accent feature. Because of its higher workload, the Expanded Picklist can be slower and is not recommended for users with very old computers or extremely large projects. To choose between the Simple and Expanded Picklists, access File > Preferences > Program Options > Lists. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 3 February 2004.
  14. You can open the Exhibit Log by double-clicking on the Image Window. This is a handy shortcut if you don't use the standard toolbar. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 17 May 2004.
  15. You can change the order of the items in the "Other info" window (in the top-right of the Person View). Right click on that small window and choose "Customize 'Other info' box...". Then highlight an item in the list and choose or . This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 17 May 2004.
  16. You can activate a column on the Person View that will display the age of the focus person at the time that each of his events occurred. The option is accessible from Preferences > Program Options > Tag Box. The setting is saved as part of your screen layout. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 17 May 2004.
  17. Capitalization of the field names on the Source Definition screen is significant. For instance, if a data-entry field is labeled "Date", then it means that a date value is required by one or more of the output templates for that source. (In that case, failing to enter a date will produce "an unknown date" in the output). If the field is labeled "date" (lower case) then it means that the field is not referenced by any template. In that case, you can enter a date value but it won't appear in the output unless you change the template. A field that is labeled "" (i.e., with conditional brackets) means that it is referenced but not required by the template(s). That is, it is conditional. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 17 May 2004.
  18. Backup with fewer clicks

You can perform a backup with just two clicks in the Backup Wizard. From Step 1, click on Next (the backup type that you used last time is already highlighted). On Step 2, click on and you're done! That is, you don't have to navigate through all of the steps of the wizard in order to start the backup. Note that the backup file destination is determined by an option in Preferences > Program Options > Advanced. Set that option to your liking so that you don't have to do so for each backup. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 17 May 2004.
  19. You can create a backup configuration that specifies which files you want to include (data, layouts, toolbars, color schemes, etc.)? You can select one of the pre-configured backup types, of course, but you can also design your own. Give the new backup configuration a new name on Step 1 of the Backup Wizard. Thereafter, you can run it again by selecting it by name. You might even want to design more than one custom backup configuration for different purposes (e.g., archiving, transferring data to a laptop, etc.) This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 17 May 2004.
  20. You can turn off those annoying messages about sureties, updating the sort date, etc. The "Prompts" page on the Preferences screen includes options to turn off a variety of such warning messages. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 17 May 2004.
  21. There is a link to a chart printing service right on the Reports menu. You can design a large chart in TMG or FTST and use this convenient feature to upload it directly to the chart printing service, Chartform Delivery. Family tree charts are very popular at family reunions, they make great gifts, and the printing process couldn't be easier than with this built-in feature. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 26 June 2004.
  22. You can wrap long values on the Project Explorer. Right-click on the Project Explorer and choose "Multiline text on Project Explorer." Names that can't be displayed in the available space will be wrapped to the next line. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 26 June 2004.
  23. You can cause long lines on the Person View to wrap to the next line instead of being truncated. Right-click on the list of events and choose "Display more rows per tag." Choose the same option multiple times to add more lines. You can also control this setting from File > Preferences > Program Options > Tag Box. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 26 June 2004.
  24. You can control the effect of the "Individual Narrative Preview" button on the Reporting toolbar. This button executes a specific report definition. Access the Report menu, choose Individual Narrative, and then select "Individual Narrative Preview" from the list of configuration names. If you make any option changes now and click on Save (or Print and Save), then those customizations will apply when you next click on the toolbar button. There are similar matching report definitions for the two other "preview" buttons on the Reporting toolbar. This tip was originally published in the Wholly Genes Newsletter, 26 June 2004.
  25. Learn common acronyms

Learn common acronyms Applies to: All products Tip: Here's a list of acronyms and abbreviations that you might find used in TMG, FTST, or in conversations on public mailing lists.
