  1. How can I move my report definitions to another computer? Applies to: TMG Answer: The easiest way to move report definitions is by using the Backup and Restore Wizards. Step 3 of the Backup Wizard includes an option to include report configurations. Note that it is not necessary to backup a data project. Leave the "Select project" field empty on Step 2 in order to create a backup that includes only report configurations.
  2. How can I add the same data to many different tags? Applies to: TMG Answer: You can create a text macro that will fill data into several fields at once. To create the text macro on the Menu bar choose Tools > Text Macro. Select a line and input the data for each field separated by a semicolon. Remember the Function key (Fn) associated to the line you chose. When you've input all the data, click the [OK] button To use the text macro, go to your tag entry screen and put your cursor in the first field for which you put data in the macro. Press +Fn. It will automatically fill in all the fields. Other keywords: quick, ditto, repeat, default
  3. Where can I find a list of recent changes in TMG? Applies to: TMG5 Answer: The change log can be found in the Upgrade Center.
  4. How can I add married name tags to all married women? Applies to: TMG Answer: TMG has an option to create married names as you enter data, but it does not provide a command to add married names for existing married women. John Cardinal's TMG Utility program, however, does provide this capability. See TMG related web sites.
  5. How can I get rid of the semicolon in my narrative reports? Applies to: TMG Answer: There is a report option to output memos after the sentence. If that option chosen, the sentence and the memo are separated by a semicolon. To remove the semicolon, include a reference to the memo in the sentence. For instance, change the sentence structure from: [P] was born to: [P] was born
  6. Applies to: TMG Answer: If you wish to combine duplicate places, they must match exactly in all columns in the Master Place List. This includes the columns which are viewed by scrolling to the right with the scroll bar at the bottom of the Master Place List. With the Master Place List closed, access File > Maintenance > Optimize to cause the program to combine the duplicate places.
  7. Why does the Picklist show multiple people with the same ID? Applied to: All products Answer: It doesn't. It shows multiple names for the same person. There is only one person with each ID. If an ID appears more than once on the Picklist, it is because that person has more than one name. See also: Why does the Picklist show multiple names for the same person?
  8. Why does the Picklist show multiple names for the same person? Applies to: All products Answer: If a person has multiple Name tags, each tag will appear in the Picklist. If two or more of those Name tags have the same data, duplicate entries will appear in the Picklist. In TMG, you can remove a duplicate name from the Picklist by deleting the extra Name tag. Non-primary Name tags appear in the tag list, and you can delete them by selecting the tag and choosing Edit > Delete > Tag or by keying . You can not delete the primary name; you have to make another Name tag the primary name first. You can make a Name tag the primary name by selecting it and choosing Edit > Make tag primary. The primary Name tag can be edited by clicking on the "Name" label at the top of the Person View. Note that duplicate names are often caused by merging records and keeping the Name-Var tag from both records. Remember, the Picklist is a list of names, not of people.
  9. Applies to: TMG Answer: After importing data from another genealogy program you may expect to do some cleanup work on the Master Place List. The first step in cleaning up the Master Place List is accomplished by going to Tools > Master Place List and moving all of the entities into the correct columns, Details, City, County/Parish, State, Country etc. This is easily accomplished by using + LeftArrow or + RighArrow. If you place the cursor on the leftmost column to shift to the right, all of the contiguous columns will shift with one command. The same is true for shifting columns to the left. You may find it convenient to sort the Master Place List various ways in order to spot the inconsistencies. This is accomplished by clicking on [sort] button. If you make the primary sort on the Detail column, for example, all of the like places in this column will sort together making the process of spotting and fixing problems easier. During this process you may note some inconsistencies in the way you have been entering a particular entity. You may wish to make global changes, for example you might want to change all of the occurrences of United States to USA and/or you may have some states spelled out and others abbreviated and wish to change all of them to be the same. These problems may be corrected by clicking on the [Replace] button. As with any Global modification process you must be aware that changes may occur in unexpected places. This is minimized in this process by only changing the string(s) that match in all of column(s) you select and wildcards are not allowed. If you wish to make individual modifications, these may be corrected by clicking on the [Edit] button or pressing . As you make corrections you may wish to combine like places. After you make any changes to the Master Place List, click on the [Close] buttont; then click on File > Maintenance > Optimize to cause the program to combine the duplicate places. See How do I combine Duplicate places in the Master Place List.
  10. What should I know about importing from Ultimate Family Tree? Applies to: All products Answer: You can import either a project (*.PRO) or backup file (*.SQZ) directly from Ultimate Family Tree (UFT) or its predecessors. In particular, it will preserve the ID numbers, custom event types, alias and other name types, person flags, multimedia elements (including OLE objects), sources, repositories, evidence, proofs, sure levels, non-standard "families," medical fields, miscellaneous data, biographical notes, research notes, mailing label info, sticky notes, standard and custom roles, event/role templates, embedded text codes (bold, underline, italics, and indexes of people and places), short place names, and custom place labels. By default, it will not import birth events that have no date or place associated with them. There is an import option with which you can control this behavior, however. It will optionally retain the citation formats that you have constructed with components in UFT. While it will import all of the elements of the sources, an import option determines whether it honors the sequence and syntax of components from UFT when building a citation for a report. While The Master Genealogist and Family Tree SuperTools do support Individual Flags, it does NOT support event flags and source flags so that data (if any) from UFT is not imported. A few less common or administrative data types are also not imported. A report at the end of the import indicates any problems or questionable issues that were encountered during the import. For a more detailed list of these data types in UFT, as well as a description of if and where they are imported, please see the document referenced below. Although data from this family of products may be imported via GEDCOM, the GenBridge™ direct import module will generally produce much better results. For an extensive report comparing these two transfer processes, please see "Transferring data from ultimate Family Tree (UFT) via GEDCOM and GenBridge." 11. How do I choose the right import options?Applies to: All products Answer: Experiment! For many people the default import options are sufficient. If you want maximum control over the import process, however, then there are many options. It's a good idea to experiment. Try different options, and see which works best for your data. With TMG in particular, after you start entering new data or modifying old data to take advantage of TMG's features, you won't want to go back and import again because you'll lose any changes you made after the import. Make sure you are happy with the results of the import process before you start managing your data in TMG. In some cases, you may want to make changes in your old program before you import into TMG or FTST. Other keywords: GenBridge
  12. Should I use GenBridge or GEDCOM? Applies to: All products Answer: When you convert from another program to TMG or FTST, you may be tempted to transfer your data via GEDCOM. In changing to most other programs, that is the only choice. Both TMG and FTST, however, support GenBridge, a more effective way to transfer data. If your old family tree program is supported by GenBridge, and many are, then use it! Other keywords: Import Wizard
  13. What data formats can I import? Answer: The Master Genealogist and Family Tree SuperTools can read data directly from a long list of other program formats. For a list of products that can be directly imported into Family Tree SuperTools go to Product page - Family Tree SuperTools. The list for The Master Genealogist can be found at Product page - The Master Genealogist. By using the GenBridge process, and selecting direct import from the other programs files, you are able to import almost all of the data items from the other listed products with very little loss as opposed to a GEDCOM transfer which has a limited capability to transfer some types of data.
