  1. Way back I used the "Second Person" element/group for an itemtype element. Now thinking through my go-over of TMG sources, I would prefer the ItemType element was an alias/ingroupof RecordType which I have since cleared from use as SecondPerson is a name element. Is there a way to change all SecondPerson (aka my ItemType) element to a RecordType? Actually more generically is there a way in TMG or TMG Utilities to transfer content already in Sources from one element/group to another element/group? Thanks for ideas. I have tried some simple things but I have a feeling that the only way to make this change inside TMG is to make the new element and then copy/paste the data in each and every relevant source from the old element to the new preferred one.
  2. Restore fails

Before upgrading to Windows 10 and I am testing my application on a different PC already upgraded to Windows 10. I installed from the final 9.05 version and attempted to restore my backup. I tried a backup with just the project/accents/filters and one with those plus some of the other components but not exhibits or program options/preference. Neither worked. The database I am backing up works fine on the exisitng TMG install on the Windows 7 PC. It was optimizied/validated/optimized before backup. The failure is that it says there is no "GENE-N.dbf" --- gene being my project name. In the Projects folder I found only a file named GENE__-Copy.PJC with 5K. When trying to select it I get the message that it isn't a true .pjc file. I then tried to remove and reinstall and got a "project in use" error message. I successfully removed all of TMG by uninstall and manually removing all the project files in documents folder as well as in other locations. It did install but not as new as it did not ask for the serial number. But it appeared to install otherwise as new. I checked the local/temp folder and there were no new temp files created on the date I installed it. Now I stymied about moving to Windows 10. If restore does not work with new install on an existing Windows 10 PC, I would expect the same problem to occur if I had to start from scratch if after the Windows 10 update TMG did not run as expected. Further, it means I can't move my database to another PC in the future. Any ideas? Debra
  3. Restore fails

Ends up it was my error. Not sure how but under Preferences/General the default project path was to v8 instead of v9. Changed that and the backup restores on a new install on a Windows PC using restore. Mea culpa.
  4. Restore fails

Agree there should be no issue in moving 7 to 10. The problem is that I'm trying to install my backup made on W7 onto a new installation of TMG (same final version) but this new PC is W10 and the restore is not working.
  5. Restore fails

I read over Terry's Tips and some old restore posts for version 8.
  6. There is apparently an error or corruption in my TMG9 database. It is happening with one person . I reinstalled TMG9 on a differnet laptop and did a restore but the problem is still there, so assume it is something in my dataset. This person has a primary and a nonprimary entry as the name appears twice on the simple picklist. I thought at first it was the linkage to his parents, but deleted both parent links and same problem. Same problem when attempting to link to this person from his children (with him as father). Here is what happens -- I click on the father link from a child and get a (abort, retry, ignore) dialog box where GENE is the name of my database and it says "\path....\GENE.N.FPT missing or invalid" sometimes the code is 177, sometimes 130, etc. depending on where I'm trying to access this person from. I have reindexed, reoptimized, tried repair from the install app. I was going to next break and re-establish all the parent & child links plus any shared events and then re-establish them. Before doing that, any ideas from the TMG database experts on what might be causing this and if there is an easier fix would be greatly appreciated. I have reindexed, reoptimized, tried repair from the install app.
  7. Loading Second Site onto an iPad?

I found a method that works better than the proposed Goodreader app for me. This only puts your SS folders/files on the ipad and the app is the html viewer. It is only for viewing and navigating. I put the -i and -o folder onto the ipad in Fileapp, then started the index.html file in the -o file and everything works fine for viewing, including most of the navigation except when a link jumps out to the Safari browser for a live internet link. You then have to "double-home button" to go back to Fileapp. I have a lot of photos, census images, icons etc. and everything works. I use a simple one-column layout and one person per page already so no problems in the layout display. Here is the setup. Download the free version of Fileapp to your iPad. Download the free DiskAid desktop to your Windows PC. Connect your ipad to your PC with the USB cable. Open DiskAid and your iPad and its folders will appear on the left column. Choose "Copy to Device" on the top bar and then navigate to the folder on your PC you want to move to the iPad. I did the -o and -i folders for a particular family separately. Not sure if you can select two folders at once. They key here is that you can select an entire folder to move all at once. Then you can disconnect your iPad. Go the Fileapp application on the iPad and select the folders icon at the bottom of the ipad screen. I chose to put the -i and -o in a top level folder named SS files to keep them separate from other types of files. For me I select the SS files folder and then see the FamilyName-i and FamilyName-o folders; then select the FamilyName-o folder, and then scroll down and select the index html document. That pulls up the top level page. If you have already selected the page before, there is a "last opened" link in the folders view that will take you to that file directly. So far I've only experimented with one smaller family tree in SS format. Not sure what will happen with a very large format with even more images and pdfs. I should also note that all the source links work, including the link to the source pdf that I have added to each source. Navigation isn't completely polished, when you need to go backwards depending on how you setup your SS output/files, but works very well for view the files and navigating within the basic SS .html files (vs the source attachments, pdfs, etc.).
  8. Problem: Cannot merge two sources using TMG8 Select Master Source List from menu Select source 813 Click merge Type in sourc 139 for source to merge to Click OK Popup menu about merge/delete Click Yes Popup error message recieved that says: Alias not found. 7 FRMMERGERS.MUPDATECITCOUNT Abort | Retry | Ignore At this point all I can do is abort. I even changed both 813 and 139 sources to be the same source type (e.g., book-corporate) and tried again with same error result. Then I did a file integrity validation, reindex and optimize and tried again to merge the two sources with same error result. Next step I created two fake source records as a test. I then tried to merge one into the other with the same error message result. I've sent an trouble report to WG. Has anyone else had this problem?
  9. Cannot Download Upgrade

The problem was resolved by updating to v.8.1. One of the tech support people at TMG responded to my trouble report about inability to merge two sources. Fortunately this update also resolved the "check for updates" not functioning. Note that I did backup my data set. But as the email below says, updating to 8.1 did not appear to change my data. It came back at the point it was before uninstall/install. In addition, the 8.1 fixed the problem of being unable to "check for updates" My serial number was also intact despite installing the "30 day trial" update. Go to our web site and download the Free 30 Day trial of TMG. SAVE that download to your computer. Uninstall TMG V8. This will NOT affect your data. Run the file you just downloaded to install TMG V8.01. Use the same installation criteria you used for the original install i.e. for all users...
  10. I'm using the original v.8 installation. When I choose Check for update from the menu it doesn't work. Every few times I try it, it appears to recognize the wiseupto update file but then always returns an error message. Usually I just get the error message which states "An error occurred while trying to locate the update to TMG v.8. etc." I have an active internet connection so that is not the issue. I never had any problem with the "host server" having access with v.7 updates. I don't use a proxy server. Any ideas on why the "check for update" doesn't work? Also, if I cancel out of this error message TMG8 doesn't restart like it did in v.7. Thanks for any ideas.
  11. Check for updates doesn't work

The problem was resolved by updating to v.8.1. One of the tech support people at TMG responded to my trouble report. Here is the reply for anyone else with this problem. 12. Cannot Download Upgrade

Confirming that I cannot use the "check for updates" either. It would appear it is broken in v.8. It was also broken for me in the beta so this isn't a good sign.
  13. I made some errors and want to go back to all adds/changes I made to events over the last 3 weeks. Is there a way to create a report of all or part of these events changed since a specific date? Thanks!
  14. Report by add/change edit date

Thanks very much. That will do it.
  15. I moved my TMG to a new Windows 64bit computer a couple of months ago. I have all my exhibits in external folders. I fixed most of them with the TMG tool, and doing some cleanup with the remainders now that were outside the first level exhibit tree folder. Here is my problem, and not sure how it relates to the above. I am renaming the remainders to fit my standard file naming scheme and then reattaching them as an external exhibit to a tag event manually. I think the problem is also occurring with new exhibits that I've added and now attaching to a tag event, but haven't documented that. Everything goes well for a while and then when I drag and drop an image onto a tag event exhibit window TMG stops working entirely. The only option is to force an end task using windows task manager. Then restart. TMG is then at a previous person record. Going back to the person/event where I was trying to drag-and-drop the image, the image is usually there. I have a large database and lots of exhibit links. I usually reindex and reoptimize and backup when the exhibit drag-and-drop freezes TMG, when I start up again and then continue. This was only occasional but now it seems to happen a few times a day when I'm doing a lot of census image attachments. Anyone using TMG 7 with Win64bit and drag-dropping images to tag events have this problem and any solutions? Would appreciate any ideas.
  16. Just to confirm. Yes I had done the verify file integrity and it came up with no problems. I'll go through the entire verify, reindex, optimize again (have done that many times). The option to use a TMG command to close any windows hidden behind or to close it out more gracefully doesn't work as TMG if completely frozen -- no action works on any of the open TMG windows or menus. Thus why I do the more drastic windows end task. There are no windows behind TMG. However, when I do a Windows end task the TMG windows appear to come back usable but they don't work properly and so the complete end task and restart is the only one that brings TMG back to working order. One time I did get a abort/ignore for some file --- think it was file_S. Does that sound familiar? Next time I'll write down the exact message. I suspect it has something to do with dragging and dropping an image file to the event tag image window. I didn't use that much in the past and adding many images now. Thanks for all ideas!
  17. I was up to about 17350 in personIDs and suddenly this morning the new individual I added had the number 251839! What happened and is there anyway to go back to the 17400 level? This makes the numbering of individual from now on outrageously long and complicated. Hoping I missed something simple in help or some other trick to revert back.
  18. PersonID numbering problem in TMG

Reindexing and Optimizing did not resolve. I did resolve the problem by manual renumbering. I had about 40 in those high numbers, probably started by a typo when adding someone. I did a search and sorted the individuals by ID number and then manually went in and renumbered them all. Once all the high numbers were renumbered to below the old last used number it resolved itself and now offers the default new person ID as it should. If anyone has any other idea how to do this other than manual renumbering, please document for the someone else with this problem. It is probably rare. It did enforce the point that there are many unused ID numbers in the lower numbers that I can "use up" first to keep the overall ID numbers shorter in the long run.
  19. PersonID numbering problem in TMG

Forgot to say that I have already done the maintenance reindex and validate file integrity.
  20. From the posts and reading the help, I appears that there is no way to have the [W] or [R:rolename] display with just the given name (not full name). For example. "Susan was...." vs. "Susan Marjorie Bryant was..." I'm using roles in census descriptions based on the head of household, and find the full name that shows up in SS as very awkward reading. I know you could enter each individually but I don't want to do that. I'd rather just change the sentence for the roles to read He or She if that is the only option other than manually editing each witness/rolename instance. I thought I read in one post that it was on the TMG wish list, or maybe wished it was on the wish list. Any ideas or knowledge of if this feature is on the wish list is appreciated. Debra Ketchell
  21. Kenny, [R:rolename] just put this instead [RG:rolename] This is also particular to the format of how my census tags are setup. I have one dau role, one wife role, one son role, etc. I use [RG:wife], [R:father], [R:mother] etc. -- it works perfectly since there is never more than one wife, father, mother etc. usually so sentence for a wife Susan Marjorie Bryant would begin "Susan was.... However the roles dau, son, nephew, niece, etc. can be used multiple times and if I use for example [RG:dau] then the sentence begins: "Josephine Lucinda, Susan Marjorie, Mary Frances and Elizabeth Ann was..." as there are four daughters associated with the head of household and I want just "Susan was... " as this is the sentence associated with her specific [WM] data. I'll do some more reading on Roles. Debra Ketchell
  22. Netbook layouts

I have used a small notebook (Sony 1280x768 10" widescreen ) for 5 years as it was the only truly carryable anywhere laptop. The new netbook's are much less expensive and you lose a little real estate on the screen, but I'll be buying one when my Sony dies. Coupled with a small portable external hard drive (mine is a WD My Passport 500GB and I'm sure 1T will be coming soon), you get a small footprint required to work, a very low weight/shoulder to carry around, and high storage system. The footprint size was #1 for me to fit on an airplane tray, comfortably in my lap anywhere, etc. I've found even at home I don't connect to a larger monitor as I can carry the Sony around easily, even from room to room or to a coffee shop with wifi. The only time I need to hard connect is scanning or printing ( printers can be networked now too or I use print to PDF). I choose portability and compensate in organizing to the screen size and develop shorcuts or other work flow patterns. For us Blackberry or iPhone users --- its all about portability. You develop techniques and can become quite fast after a while (my husband can use the BB Pearl keypad, I have to use the slightly larger BB Curve). So its priorities. I do wish TMG provided one stroke scoll in/out, resize, more drag/drop, etc. Less key data would help ergonomically for whatever size device you use. But I won't complain too much as TMG is the best out there I've seen and it is getting better. I use RockDock instead of the standard windows task bar/icons on desktop. RockDock creates a Mac-like bar that you can place top, bottom, left or right. By mousing over it each of the icons gets bigger and the name is displayed. This allows me to have my applications, individuals folders (images, source documents, SS files) one click away opened or unopened to avoid a lot of WIndows navigation since you need all the screen real estate you have. Just one of the little compensations for the small screen size. I'd love to see more examples of how netbook users are organizing their screen and adapting their work pattern (see mine below) to learn "ahas" that would simplify my work. SIDEBAR ON WORK PATTERN: My genealogy work pattern seems to be different from most. I've never used the full sized TMG on the screen.TMG is just one of the programs that I use when I'm working on genealogy. My key programs are TMG, Acrobat, Endnote, Firefox with things like Google desktop search if I can't find what I'm looking for on my laptop. As a librairan, I've used Endnote for managing sources for years, and back in the TMG v.2-3 days when the ability to save lots of texts and file attachments in source document in external files wasn't easy and searching the full text in those source documents didn't exist. That was also before SS. I did manual web pages back then and could link TMG source to a folder of source documents. Now SS has completely automated the process and allows external files, so I may look at eliminating Endnote when I have time. I'll lose some functionality but save in others ways. I save all my source documents as PDFs. If I have them OCRed I could search the entire content using Google Desktop to find a particular item -- and if not add the extra information into the PDF instead of Endnote now if it doesn't fit well in TMG. Again my librarian training. I don't want them as images as PDFs are the standard for document storage in my professional field. We were part of the Google Books project and had all our pre-copyright books scanned by Google and now they are available to anyone and downloadable in PDF format. I'm now enjoying that conversion as genealogist as the Google Books project get more old books. I now have a digital library of genealogy books downloaded and saved on my WD My Passport external drive. I've scanned my old 25+ years of book, letter, article, other such documents into PDFs and in the process of scanning my images and going completely digital. They are easier to find, read and store. Basically I want it all digital so I can work on it anywhere, anytime; and be able to share the data and source material digitally. Kudos to John Cardinal and Second Site for making that much easier.
  23. Is anyone else having slow down and inactive problems with the new update? It is very slow and reacting erratically to mouse and text input. Seems like it is freezing up and I have to completing bail out and start up again. I've already rebooted a few times and done optimiization. I haven't changed anything my files since pre-update as I was gone so it has something to do with the new update but I haven't been able to figure out what.
  24. Problems with new 7.04 update

I'm not sure what seems to have resolved the issue. It was definitely something with the update as no other programs had the problem on my PC and the only change had been the udpate. I had already done the optimizing but hadn't verified. So I reran all the optimizing, verifications, etc. again and then rebooted and Viola everything seems to be working fine. I suspect it was the exhibit verification process that cleaned it up for those who have the same problem.
  25. For both TMG 7.x and SS 2.x the default browser seems to be stuck on IE. That was previously my default browser. However, I changed to Mozilla 3.x a while back. When I click on the web search in TMG or browse the SS newly created html files they are launched in IE. I made IE not the default using its options, and make Mozilla the default using its options. Further, I went to Add/Remove Programs in Windows XP and used the set program access defaults to check now and it says Mozilla. The folder type extensions are also set to Mozilla as the default to open. I just clicked a link in an email from a commercial company and that link also opened in Mozilla. So it appears that there is something in TMG that is stuck on IE. I can't find a setting. Supposedly it goes to your default browser. Is there a way to manually reset this without reinstalling? That would be possible to time consuming.
