Hi AllMy Project is created out opf several gedcoms and i have some duplicates in my master place list.
The best example i can give is
1) Place= Delft Country=Netherlands
2) Place= Delft Country=Netherlands
3) Addresse=Old ChurchPlace= Delft Country=Netherlands
4) Addresse=Old Church Detail=plot xx21 Place= Delft Country=Netherlands
I would like to merge 1 and 2 but not 3 and 4 due to their extra detail
Is that possible
To merge duplicate places you need to run the Optimise from File, Maintenance. Any places which are identical will be merged. The Help files say the following which helps understand why some won't merge.
For two place records to be considered duplicates, all fields must be the same. This includes the Style, if one was used to create some of the entries. It is possible, for example, for two Master Place records to appear identical, but to have been generated using different Styles.
Optimising will not remove unused place records for which a start year, end year, comment, or short place name have been recorded.

I too am having the same problem and know of at least 2 additional users with this problem. It occurs when TMG tries to retrieve a message. There was a posting on the tmg listserve which suggested changing firewalls to allow TMG to access the internet. IN HOPES THAT THERE IS A WHOLLYGENES MODERATOR ON: Another user and myself both changed our firewalls to allow TMG to access the internet. (I use Norton as a firewall, have windows firewall turned off, and also rebooted my machine) In BOTH user cases, it did not fix the problem. At this time I cannot manage to get on to TMG (I am also using version 7). Please help ASAP as this was the weekend I had devoted to entering data!!!!TIA.

Has anyone having the problem tried starting the pc in safe mode, connecting to the internet and then opening TMG to see if the problem still occurs. In safe mode the firewall is not loaded so if the problem does occur then that rules out firewall. If it doesn't then it points to the firewall.

Here's how I handle it, which is a little different than you requested. I use a default sentence that is something like this:[P] married [PO] <[D]> <at [L2]> <in [L]>
The key part is the location variables. If [L2] is used in the sentence, then the value of [L] will not include the detail (L2) field, and so the sentence above uses the preposition "at" before the detail field value and the preposition "in" before the rest of the place display.
John,
Thanks for this. It's a very good way to handle these and I changed my sentences straight away.

Good day! I have finally upgraded to V7. Among other reasons, I had hoped I'd be able to create report output to a PDF file. However, while TMG is creating the PDF file, I am unable to open said file using Adobe's reader.I am running TMG v 7.02 on a Windows PC running XP. I have Administrator privileges, but I also created the permanent PDF printer.
The error I am getting is:
"Adobe Reader could not open [filename.pdf] because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an e-mail attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)."
I'm not a techie, but I can get around well enough. Hoping someone can help, as I'd love to get some output to PDF for a gift for my in-laws.
If anyone needs to e-mail me directly, my e-mail address is my first name and the first initial of my surname at mindspring.com.
Judy Campbell
Hi Judy,
In my experience you get this message because it is not a pdf file but another format which has been named .pdf. So can you describe the process you are following to produce the pdf file.
Also can you say what version of Adobe Reader you have on your pc.

Thanks, I did it this morning and it worked great! You're welcome

I have not been using TMG 6.09 for a while and tried to backup my file today, but it is not recognizing my computer's hard drive "E". It wanted to back up to a HD I do not have any more "F". I went to Preferences, advanced, and changed the back up destination to "E", but I got the message - Back up drive "E:/" is not accessible, path changed to "C". I have been using "E" today to back up other files, and it works. I just put in a plain cd in the drive, but that ususally is the way to do it. Thanks! If E: is a CD drive then you cannot write directly to a CD when backing up in TMG unless your CD writing software allows direct access. You should backup to the C drive and copy onto the CD.

"Preferences>New People>Birth Date?Years are within" does not remember the value selected from session to session. Each time a new session is started, the value reverts to the default value of 10.Hi Jack,
I see the same thing and will pass the issue on.

I am running TMG 6.12 under Vista and have suffered a sudden problem with my main database. When I try to open it I get the following error displayed:
The project requires exclusive access to the data files but the project is open elsewhere at this time.
Please close any other copies of the application that are accessing the project and try again.
If I click on OK I get:
Alias BASE is not found 19 FILTERDATA2
Abort Retry Ignore
................ and when I try SS2 I get:
Error -200
Error 83805
File is not a data file
And then text say my xxxxxxxx_E.dbf is corrupted
Alan
Please can anybody help?
You've probably done this by now but since it thinks files are still being used, have you closed the pc down, left for about 20 seconds and restarted. If that works then Optimise and Validate.

How do I undo the problems with restore when I use two different computers. Is there a way I can reset the defaults so I can restore from my work computer to my home computer without losing everything I have done? Thanks. It sounds like you are wanting to do is have a set of data on each pc, work on both and then transfer the data from pc1 to pc2 without losing everthing you've done on pc2.
It is not possible unfortunately . If you wish to work on 2 pcs then you can only have one set of data which you backup and restore between them.

I’m using Windows XP.The Wholly Genes PDF Writer was already installed. So, I removed it, and reinstalled it. But I’m still getting a "Printer not activated" error.
Are you trying to print the report or run it to a file and select a pdf format?

Jeff, if you search the forum for 'structure version' you'll find several threads on the subject, including some suggestions to avoid the problem. As you noticed, it generally resolves itself with the next opening of TMG.Also check whether the incidence of the problem coincides with your Preference settings for 'check for an update' or 'check for messages'. You could set those to 0 and see if it makes a difference.
Virginia
Thanks Virginia,
I will search the forum. It was a phrase I couldn't recall reading so hadn't actually searched.
If I had I could probably have found the answer straight away.

-
Intermittently recently when opening TMG6.12 I have got the message "Structure Version is missing. Please contact tech support for assistance". click OK and it closes. opening the program again gives the welcome screen and I'm able to open my last project. run VFI and it's OK. The program is fine for a while and then repeats.
Any suggestions

From a list of v7 features posted on the TMG-L on 8/19/2007 by Bob Velke- Check for duplicate people during the Add Person process (and many
Preference options to control the duplicate-checking rules).
Same list was posted somewhere on the Forum but I can't readily find it...
Look at http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index...?showtopic=7945 which has the list of proposed features for v7. It is 4 entries down.

TMG crashed (first time in 18 months !) and when I came back there is a Source item which:1. can be selected by source number in the Citations dialog box coming via the Tag entry screen
2. does not appear in the Master Source list.
TMG Utility can find the Source so it is real.
I don't like having phantom data - it may corrupt things later on.
Any suggestions?
TIA ... John
John,
If you haven't already done it then you should Reindex, Optimise and Validate (VFI) to see if it fixes the problem.

I am conscious that I have entered names of people who are definitely not living, but do not at present have a flag showing this fact. Is there a way of getting up a list of all individuals with a ? flag, so I can go through this list scientifically, and "kill off" the ones who are actually dead?John Cardinal's TMGUtility has a function to set Living=N. The caluclation is based on a BMDB before a date you specifiy and uses the 5 generation rule as well to set. It can be downloaded from www.johncardinal.com

This is a web site created with Second Site 2.
Not quite an "Out the box" site there are some customisations to it.
To produce something of this quality by hand would take me an awful long time.
Second Site 2 is a must if you want to publish your website online from TMG or produce CDs for family members.

Hello everyone,Is there a way to create a birthday list for persons in my dataset? I think there may be a way to do this using the List People Report, but I can't seem to configure the settings correctly.
Any help would be much appreciated.
You are looking in the right place and to get what you want you need to alter the output columns in the Options tag on the Report definition screen. You could also set up a filter for a specific group of people on the main definition screen e.g. living.

No. TMG must be installed on the system that it's going to run on. Many required support files are installed to the system32 folder. Fonts are installed to the fonts folder. Can you not install the program and directory on each pc? you would then transport the external hard drive between pcs and the relevant fonts/files/registry entries would be in place on the internal hard drive of each machine

Also, If you want a certain role to always default to the P1 Possition when a tag is opened, go to the Master Tag Type List, and select the tag. On the roles and sentences tab, beside the ROLES, is a up and down arrow. You can move the roles around to fit your needs. Thanks for this Theresa. I'd never thought of it but it's ideal on my census tags where P1 is always Head of Houshold and marriages where P1 is Groom.

I would like to back up on a CD. However, whenever I back up, it says that isn't possible and it says it has changed the location of the back from the E drive (CD) to the C drive -- which isn't really helpful.Any suggestions for things to try?
TMG can't backup directly to the CD because of the way the backup is formed from the many files in the database. It is only possible if you have CD burning software which can be set for direct access. (Uses a temp file on the hard drive). Backup to the C drive and copy to the CD.

We must be talking about different things here Jeff.attached is a doc with a couple of screenshots.
One is the Other screen of my tag type list for, in this case, my Will tag, showing it is set to show Witness
and in the background, is the rhs of the following merge screen
It only shows WILL for the chap who was actually only attached as witness.
Deepest Apologies Lorna,
I didn't fully read your post for where you were. I've looked in the right place now, the merge screen, and see what you see. Despite the tag being set to show witness rather than the title, it clearly give the tag title.
The one I looked at then had 2 deaths as he was witness to his father's death.
I agree some clarification is needed if the tag is present when the person is a witness.
-
Ta for the reply, but did you check that theory out Jeff?I'm reasonably sure that the tag concerned in my example was a standard Death tag, and I have that set at display witnessed tags "as "Witness"
and to display roles.
Even if I'm wrong, I think it's still a valid wish list, as I'd have to make sure that each and every tag was set up the correct way for that to happen rather than a standard "W" display
Hi Lorna,
Well I have now and it does work <G>. I'd come across it before somewhere.
I agree that it would be a good to be able to set globally for tags so you could toggle between the 2 options.
-
For one horrible moment today I thought I'd just pushed enter to merge two people when I suddenly noticed that I appeared to have two different Deaths for a chappie. Then I realised that the 1855 one was him as a Witness, not the principal.
My wishlist item is to make this much clearer on the Merge screen by, eg, showing (W) after the tag type if the person is a witness not a principal
Lorna,
If you Edit the tag in the Master Tag Type List then on the Other Tab is a section "Display Witness Tags". Select "As Witness" and it won't show Death.
-
Mike - That was the first thing I checked, but unfortunately, in the edit tag dialog box, everything looks like it ought to be right. Interestingly, this happened on 17 names that I entered, with consecutive ID numbers. Never happened before; hasn't happened since!
Another possibility is that these people have a second name variation tag so the main one looks alright. Why not post an image of their person view and the name tag box. Someone might spot something else
