1. Position and Print a one-page chart

I still cannot see the download links. I have been having trouble with Firefox over the last few days. Don't know whether it is that. I did refresh the page. Janice
2. Position and Print a one-page chart

QUOTE (Virginia Blakelock @ 20 Aug 2010, 06:31 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Attached and available for download is a video showing the steps in VCF for positioning and printing the one-page chart in the screenshot. Attached is a zipped file of the report configuration for the chart in the video. Unzip the Ancestor_GenColor.rpt file and for v7 put it in your Configuration_Files folder (for the location, see Preferences / Current Project Options / Advanced). For v6 the .rpt file goes in C:Program FilesThe Master GenealogistReports. In both cases, the report configuration will appear on the dropdown list in the Ancestor Box Chart report. This chart uses Boxes / Color by Generation and is set for 6 generations. There are 2 bugs in v7 with Boxes / Color by Generation: If you decide to add another generation after you have already set your colors, your previous selections will revert to the defaults, losing your colors. If you use Add to save the report with a new name you may also lose your generation color settings. The workaround for the second bug is to copy the report definition with a new name in Windows Explorer. These bugs should be fixed in the next release. The process in the video uses the following Menu items and keyboard actions in this order: 1 - VIEW - Toolbars / All Off (no toolbars are required for this simple operation) 2 - VIEW - Page Bounds 3 - VIEW - Rulers 4 - FILE - Page Setup / Paper Size and Orientation 5 - TOOLS - Diagram / Diagram Measurements 6 - VIEW - Zoom Percent > 50% 7 - EDIT - Select All (Ctrl-A) 8 - Arrow keys (right, left, up, down) are used to move chart on page 9 - FILE - Print Preview (shows the position of the chart on the printed page; helps with tweaking) (Note also on the FILE Menu is Export, to save the chart as an image) 10 - FILE - Print (this opens the standard print dialog for your printer) Comments are welcome. Let me know if you run into a problem with the configuration file (report definition). Virginia Attachment:AncestorGenColor.zip Virginia, You are a genius. Seriously I am glad to see they are being 'locked" to find them easier'. I found it easy to understand but then I have watched the other videos that you have put up. One problem I could not see a way to download this video. I have not downloaded the configuration report yet. Janice Melbourne Down Under
3. I am glad you have redone this Mike. I have been gathering Virginia's video links and your examples together for use in the TMG Users group here and also trying to write an article for our VicGUM newsletter. New users would probably not be aware of the valuable help available on the forum. I see some of the links have been tagged. What I also would like to point out that the "little charts"work on A4 8.3in x 11.7 in. This is the standard paper for a lot of people. Janice Cornwell Melbourne Down Under
4. I have the UK and the US Sample Base.and use TMG 7.04 with Win 7. The supplied database while helpful do not go far enough. What I want to do use a copy of my database as a sample to create charts etc. I belong to http://www.vicgum.asn.au/ which is a volunteer organisation selling software and providing workshops for other software programmes as well as TMG.FTM users have a very strong base and I want to improve TMG's profile. VivGUM has stands at events sometimes. I want to provide charts etc, but do not want to put my personal stuff up there. I want all the generations which includes my grandchildren. My daughter suggested that if I changed the names I could still use my charts including the one with pictures. Is that possible to do using TMG Utility? Or is there another way? Janice Cornwell Melbourne Aus.
5. Thanks John Cardinal and Jim Byram for your replies. I did think to use the sample database but when I had a look at using the supplied databases, they do not have sufficient generations for my purpose. Also I thought that by using one that similar to my own database it would reflect more closely our Australian and New Zealand experiences. You have confirmed that I could do it, although a lot of work. Of course it would be as a separate project. I do not mind using my details but it is not only my decision to use my descendents details.
6. I am reopening an old topic. I have reread Wholly Genes Forum and TMG-L message and still can not print a one page PDF. The best I can get is one with 3 pages. I have spent ages trying. My Problem: I cannot print a large chart as a PDF. No problem with A4. The File/ Page Setup/ Printer button is missing. My System: Win 7 Home Premium TMG 7.04 PDF Printer: PDF reDirect I have tried: Cute PDF, PDF995 (nag screen on this drove me crazy) and now have PDF reDirect. I uninstalled the others. These are the steps I have tried. 1. Made PDFreDirect my default printer. 2. Created chart in VCF. 3. Viewed measurements. 4. File/Page/Setup/Size 5 Chose Paper size Postcript custom paper size 6. File/Print/Properties/Advanced/Postscript Custom Paper Size - entered measurements. 7. Created PDF I have tried other steps and the lowest number of pages I get is three. With Virginia'and others help I have masterd "little charts." Any help appreciated. Janice Cornwell Melbourne
7. Large Chart print to PDF

I have finally solved why I couldn't get a large chart to print. It iwas probably the drivers? Never mind, it works now. Last Wednesday the TMG Users group was at my house and Ed verified what I was doing on my system, was what you were meant to do. Ed suggested downloading "Bullzip"PDF printer. We did and now it works. I have not made my big chart yet although I have been fiddling. I have been making "little"charts at the moment. Now I am sure I can print them out I will try and make the large print. I will have a few minor problems which I will place in different message. My thanks to Viginia, Mike, Robin and Lee for all your contributions. Janice Cornwell Melbourne
8. Large Chart print to PDF

Virginia, I composed a reply and somehow it vanished. I apologise if it appears twice. I want to make a large chart to take to a local printer and also to send a PDF to my son so he can have it printed. The chart is not made yet. I wanted to make sure I can print a large chart to PDF as I had read earlier that some people were having trouble with Win7. I found out that I was one. I followed carefully all the solutions given previously in the forum and also tried 3 PDF programmes. I used the Tools/Diagram/Measurements to set the size. I think I have been entering the chart measurements and the paper size. I have tried all the combinations as far as I can tell. I have tried again just now and I still cannot get it. Janice
9. Large Chart print to PDF

The last was with PDFreDirect. I originally had Cute PDF and when that did not work uninstalled it and tried PDF995. I did try it and when that did not work I uninstalled that and then tried PDFreDirect. In a coupe of days I will uninstall PDFreDirect and retry PDF995. Janice
10. Large Chart print to PDF

If you see number 5 and 6 in my original message you will see I put the measurements in the box. There was no point in me paying for the programme PDF995 if it does not work. I might have bought it if it worked. So to recap. This time in VCF File/Print/SelectPrinter/Properties/Advanced/PostsciptCustom/Page?enter measurements. OK out and print. Still several pages. Janice
11. Large Chart print to PDF

Sorry it should be it did NOT work with PDF995 or cute PDF Janice
12. Large Chart print to PDF

Robin it is Win 7 Home Premium. I am alsp using PDFreDirect. It did work with either CutePDF or PDF995. As I stated originally the nag message was really intrusive in PDF995. (The free version). Once it did not work I removed it and tried PDFreDirect. I was beginning to wonder if we had a different version here in Australia from the States except I think when it was discussed originally that peerson was not from Australia. Janice
13. Large Chart print to PDF

That is exactly what I meant. Doing it your way I still get to print to 16 pages. Yes Virginia that is the problem. I have put off doing custim charts but you have given me the incentive to try custom. The only problem is this one! Janice
14. Large Chart print to PDF

Robin, I can't see where what I have done is any different from what you are suggesting. Thanks for the reply though. Janice
15. I am using TMG 7.04 on Win 7. My machine was bought November last year. TMG is running in Repair Mode. It will open Sample US and Sample UK. I get the message The Project is in Use elsewhere, please try another project. What can I do? I have been on the forum and list to see if there was a solution but couldn't find one although I know there are some there. I cannot get to do Maintenance, Optimise, VFI, Optimise. When I checked there are no CDX files under my Alllines Project, the one I cannot open. Thanks for any help Janice Cornwell
16. Project in use elsewhere

I have just sent this to Tech Support, Virginia. Will let you know what is the result. (Good I hope!)
17. Project in use elsewhere

Yes thanks to your earlier posts I have them showing. The CDX files show for the Sample reports. Janice
18. Project in use elsewhere

I have done as you suggested and still get the message project in use. When I started my computer this morning and opened the Windows Task Manaer, I found two applications running - Outlok 2007 amd TMG - Project in use elsewhere. In the Processes tab there was no instances of TMG.exe. I rebooted again and there were no applications running. I had not opened Outlook 2007. I still was not able to open my project Alllines. Thanks for your time. Janice Down Under
19. I am trying to help a friend install TMG 7.0. He bought FTM 2010 and didn't like what happened when he went from FTM16 to FTM 2010. He has now bought TMG. He contacted Jim Bryan and he sent him the zip to assist. Thanks Jim. He managed to put the dll files in the correct place. He cannot copy and paste the gbimimprt file by using the mouse or keyboard.. He has tried copy and paste. He tried drag and drop. The error he is getting is that there is an error copying the file. He sent the email to me and I was able to copy and paste to the desktop. Anyone have a clue as to what is wrong. He has another problem in that although the sampleUS version is working he cannot import his FTM file. It stops after a while. He has a huge number of internal exhibits in FTM16 (probably the maximum) and I am wondering if that is the problem. I have used TMG since DOS days and not had experience with importing other programmes. I have referred him to Terry's Tips. I have asked on his behalf because he is waiting for an operation on his eyes and there is some difficulty in reading. Any ideas. I have suggested to him to contact support. He wants to fix it if he can. Thanks in anticipation Janice Cornwell Melbourne
20. TMG16 to TMG7.0

Message for Jim, my friend has solved his problem. He opened the file on his laptop and copied the 3 files to the desktop of his main computer. It then allowed him to paste it. It was something on his computer that would not allow him to open the file correctly. Thank you for your time. Janice Cornwell Melbourne Down Under
21. TMG16 to TMG7.0

I realise that Jim. It was when he was trying to replace the app file that he struck trouble. He can not cut and paste t it there. That is when it comes up with the error message érror copying file". We are wondering if it is something to do with his computer, although he managed to cut and post the other two files sucessfully. We are stumped. Appreciate your reply. 22. TMG16 to TMG7.0

I meant to say he is importing from FTM16 Janicee
23. Is this a bug? I have bought a Eee PC 1000H. It has a 10" screen with a 80g hard drive. Thanks to Virginia and Lee I think I have it installed correctly although I am having trouble getting Second Site working. I will work on that after I m sure the Eee is installed correctly. The problem is that on the Report Definition Screen with some reports I cannot see the buttons Options, Create Report etc. I cannot resize the screen to see them and if I try to move the screen up it appears to strike a barrier. Not all reports work that way. The ones that don't work Descendant Indented Chart, Descendant Narrative, Family Group Sheet, Individual Descendent, Individual Narrative, Pedigree Compressed, Journal, Statisical Report. I can use F9, esc, and F1 but what do I use for the other buttons? Is it a bug? Janice Cornwell
24. Report Writer on Eee PC

Thanks Jim for the new suggestion. I have only just seen your reply. It is our user group meeting tonight and one other member has a EeePC which is the first one with XP. I will pass this on to her. Janice Cornwell
25. Report Writer on Eee PC

Thank you Virginia and Jim. I now have two methods for resizing the screen. I had read the manual when I first bought the Eee PC but the changing screen resolution didn't register. Computers have a good side don't they. I asked the question last night before I went to bed and when I woke this morning I have the answer from two experts who live halfway around the world from me. I am grateful. Thank you, Janice Cornwell
