  1. Report for missing Citations

Kathy, Try a List of People (LOP) Report with the following filter: Field Subfield Operator Value Connect Any Event... # of citations = Equals 0 OR Name group... # of citations = Equals 0 OR Father-Bio... Number of Citations = Equals 0 OR Mother-Bio... Number of Citations = Equals 0 END Name and save the filter with a recognizable name, like missing citations. If you use any of the other relationship tags for parent-child relationships, like -Can, -Ado, -Ste, etc., you would need to add those since I could not find a "group.." option for relationships. Interestingly enough, this LOP filter does not work on the PE. The Father-X and Mother-X fields are not available for the PE or Picklist filters. (Learn something new every day.) Make sure you save the whole report under a different name (click add button at top) like missing citations. Then run the report and check several people to ensure you are getting the expected results. For all but the Father & Mother relationship tags, a check mark will not appear if there is no source cited for that tag. (Make sure you have turned on the column to display sources on the details screen. Preference> Tag Box> check Show Source column.) To check the parent relationship, click on the Mother and Father and open the relationship tag, or just switch views to each of the parents and check the relationship tag in the details screen for that child. (If child relationship tags do not show in the details screen, right click anywhere in the details box and click Show children to display those tags in the Details window.) If the results are as expected, reset the Temp flag to N and then open up your new Missing Citations Report definition and use the Secondary Output tab of the Options window to change the Temp flag to Y. Run the LOP report Missing Citations and change the TEMP flag to Y. Then filter the Project Explorer for Temp = Y, check the box for primary names, and you have your list. If I were you, I would then right click in the PE and save those names to a new focus group. (Clear the focus group first.) Save the focus group for future use and then you can work your way down through all the people one at a time, deleting those you've fixed as you go along. Don't forget to re-save and overwrite focus after each session or you deleted folks will still be listed... Hope this helps! Janis Parkison Rodriguez

  3. Rootsweb Web Searches

I bet it is related to their adding ancestry to their web address. I know ancestry made it so you couldn't runs searches the way we used to be able to. Maybe they did the same thing to rootsweb....
  4. Citation Details

You need to add the CD to the Output columns. Click the Options button and then go to the Output column tab. I use the new tabular List of Citations report (check radio button on Options>General tab), add the Citation Detail as a column and make sure the CD has enough characters to capture all your details. Then I send the report to a spreadsheet and wrap the text for the CD column. Jan
  5. People filter

jdraganchuk, The output for the report only lists what you tell it to list. The default columns do not include Marriage. Click Options to open the Options window then click on the Output columns tab. Add two columns one for the Marriage Group date and and one for the Marriage place. You may want to send the report to a spread sheet so you can wrap the text in the columns as needed get it to print all the columns out in landscape. Janis Parkison Rodriguez
  6. Counties

Linda, Eastern Shore Maryland, right? I record the county at the time of the event, primarily for accuracy but also for research purposes. That is because many counties keep all the records for their counties, at whatever stage. Makes sense, how would you break up a will or deed book and cart off just the relevant pieces to the new county! So the record, if any, of the birth or more likely the marriage, deed or will, will be in the parent county's (Somerset) records it the vent happened in that county, not in the spin-off county's (Wicomico) records. I believe this is true for most states, counties, cities, etc. I have a couple of lines on the Eastern Shore, also, and while that strategy paid off for some marriages and wills, checking all three counties in that neck of Maryland is critical. My folks had land that straddled Worcester and Somerset and even into Delaware. Born in Somerset, will in Delaware (and fortunately recorded in Somerset, too), marriage in Worcester and their spouse died in Wicomico years later. I don't think they really moved much either. I am slowly trying to document such place changes in the comment field in the Master Place List. This would be much easier to do if I could just double click on the place in the tag and go to the Master Place List (like you can with Tag Type button to get to the Master Tag Type List. (WISH LIST ITEM) What I plan to do is add that info to the comment/memo field of the place on the MPL which has just the county, state, and country, no city or detail info. I have done this for cities, too. Then, when I generate the Place index in SS, the description about when the county/city was formed and from what other places will be in the place index. For the few I have done, I have attached postcards/photos of the county, city, etc. I don't believe this method works in TMG because the place comment doesn't print. You could also do this with a timeline or a History tag. I tried the latter a few times but didn't keep it up... You had to attach sooooo many people as witnesses... Also, correct positioning in the narrative of each person was awkward. I know some people put the current place information L9 or L10 and then compose sentences which refer to that place element, i.e. "X died in Salisbury, Somerset County, Maryland. Salisbury is currently located in Wicomico County which was formed in 18____ from parts of Somerset and Worcester Counties." But that's a lot of info for a place field. I have tried that approach for several and may go that way with one sentence per place per person since I could easily control where it printed in the narrative with sort dates. The options are practically limitless... What I love about TMG. Jan Janis Parkison Rodriguez VP Arlington RUG A TMG Users Group P.S. All this brainstorming has made me think of another option currently unavailable in TMG. A tag with TWO places. It would work for this scenario and for emigration/immigration and migration tags, etc. Then both places would be in legit place fields and searchable/reportable! Probably impossible to implement, but oh so handy!
  7. Pedigree report & word processor files

What about the Compressed Pedigree. It can be sent to word processing. It is not as pretty as the Pedigree report but if you abbreviate states and globally replace county with Co., I can squeeze 5 generations onto a Landscape 8 1/2 x 11 page. 6 generations is tougher. 9. TMG V7 How to Enter Long Names

There are many sites to help you learn TMG. Notable are the sites of Terry Reigel and Lee Hoffman. I gave a presentation to the Arlington Rug about Name Styles. I had developed a couple name styles for hispanic names and included them. I have attached it here as the meeting presentation is in the Members only part of the RUG webpage. There is a powerpoint presentation but it is 4MB... Hope this helps! Janis Parkison Rodriguez VP Arlington RUG (the largest TMG Users Group) 200603_Rodriguez_NameStyles.pdf
  10. Your sentence is: [:CR:][:TAB:][PF] was left a widower when [PO] died <[D]> Michael, there are two variables for partial names, [PF] which outputs the FIRST name and [PG] which outputs the full given name. From your description, [PG] should give you the output you want. If you wanted only the Middle name, I suggest the use of a name variation with only the middle name in the given name field. Then you select that name from the drop-down list when you want to use it for a particular event! Jan

  12. Data Entry

The easiest way is to click on the mother field of the child and then place the mother ID number in the empty mother-bio field. You can use the picklist button to find her if you do not know her number. Happy New Year! Jan

  14. Custom Flags?

Julie, If you are not using a custom tag for when they attained their Championships, you could change the flag based on the contents of the title and suffix fields. using a List of People report to change the flag. Report>List of...>People 1) On the Report Definition window, Add at the top under the box for configuration name to create a custom report: Name it: CH Title C flag 2) Click filtered group, name the filter CH Title and add the following filter: Field Subfield Operator Value Connect Title {blank} Equals = CH END 3) Leave it set to print to screen 4) At the bottom, click the Options button on the left. 5) On the Report options window, click the tab Secondary Output. Click the box next to Change Flag. Using the drop down menu select the flag you created for this purpose then select the value for the flag C. Click OK. 6) Click the Output Columns tab and Add a column for Title and Suffix before and after the name. Do so by placing the cursor in the name column and right click and select Add Column. From the drop down menu for column type choose: Name Group* tag: Title. Add the Suffix after the name choosing Name Group* tag: Suffix. 7) Click OK to return to the Report definition screen. 8) Print and Save the report, review the list to make sure the right dogs were found by the filter. If so, answer yes if it asks you whether you want to change the flags to C. Repeat the same procedure for a new report named CD Suffix O flag, creating a new filter for the Suffix = CD and changing the flag to O. Lastly, combine the two filters with an AND to change the flag to D for those with both, maybe name it the CHCD D flag report. Good luck! Jan Rodriguez P.S. We used to have GSDs. Select Ch. Bachchen's Scarlet O'Hara and Ch. Carmil's Tanqueray were our champions.
  15. Report Filter help need

How do you record the event? Did you create a Custom tag? A role under another tag? I have a custom tag called WWI Draft and use the following filter: Field Subfield Operator Value Connect Sex = Equals M AND Birth Group Date > Comes after 10 Sep 1872 AND Birth Group Date < Comes before 13 Sep 1900 AND ( Death Group Date > Comes after 5 Jun 1917 OR Death Group Date Is empty OR Death Group Date Is irregular OR Death Group # of tags = Equals 0 ) AND WWI Draft # of tags = Equals 0 END Jan
  16. Judd, When you get to the TMG field you want to paste into, try right clicking to paste and then select "paste unformatted text" to paste the text without any extraneous codes/spaces, etc. Jan
  17. Mark, The Master Place Index in Second Site will give you this kind of list! In the Place list, SS also places a blue "i" for information when there is a memo for a place. It is a hypertext link to the Place memo. You can also attach exhibits and the little camera shows up. Jan

  20. Multiple Surnames

dgrant, I suggest you read Chapter 5 of GTMOOTMG. In the section on Name Styles, it has a good section on Norwegian names. Also, I did a presentation yesterday to the Arlington RUG (TMG/UFT Users group) on Name Styles. It will be uploaded to our webpage early next week and available from the DOWNLOADS page.. http://www.rootsusers.org It will be freely available for the first month or so. An article will follow in the Newsletter. Janis Parkison Rodriguez Lansdowne, VA

  23. Filter Question

Well, this did not work! I just checked and tons of people who are living are picked up by the first filter. It appears that any undated tag fits this! What a mess! Back to the drawing board! Jan
  24. Filter Question

I use the following to change the LIVING flag to N: Any Event Year <= Is before 1890 AND (Living Flag = Equals Y OR Living Flag = Equals ? ) END I used Any Event because sometines I only have their children's birth date, not theirs. After you do this, you can run an LOP for people whose Living flag is N and the # of tags in the Death Group is 0 and you will get your list of those for whom you need a death date/place. This should pick up most of them... Jan
  25. I’ve been following the TMG-L for the past couple years and seen numerous users ask whether there is a place where people could post filters for other users to see. I decided to take a crack at this by collecting filters for a training session on Filters at a meeting of the Roots Users Group (TMG/RUG) of Arlington, VA. Right now, I believe am slated for the March 2006. Therefore, I am requesting help from the RUG membership, the TMG-L, and the users of the Wholly Genes Community Forum in developing the content for the presentation. 1) Favorites - Please post examples of your favorite/most used/ most helpful filters, either on the TMG-L or on the Wholly Genes Forum. They can be filters you use for research trips, for clean up, for reports, for lists, for setting flags, etc. For filters of List of … reports, if you modify the column output of your report to include certain information, please give the particulars for the columns. 2) Requests - Please detail a search you would like a filter for. You can also email favorite filters to me at MediaLib@rootsusers.org. Requests for filters would be better posted on the TMG-L or on the Forum so they can be developed fully…. I will collect the results, including any filters developed to address the “requests,” and, depending on the volume of the responses received, I will include them in my presentation which will be available on the RUG website afterwards <http://www.rootsusers.org/> as well as in the newsletter. Thanks for you help and Happy New Year! Janis Parkison Rodriguez In Northern Virginia
