  1. What a good idea! I wish I'd thought of it! I made a similar chart using cut and paste of several charts for a friend's wedding. It was over 10 feet wide but it was the hit of the wedding as the large family could finally see how they were all related! It's tricky also as some people had to be removed -black sheep and some had to be artificially added - adopted/significant others/etc. Also, I added a tag called 'Relationship' which I basically copied from the >Relation note in advanced preferences and added that tag to the chart. It would have been nice to have that as an automatic tag. As complicated as a chart like this can be - and it really does take some maneuvering to get it to fit to 10 feet! - it is far less confusing than trying to verbally explain relationships or even use separate charts. 2. Double Tags

I have two of every tag in the Master Tag Type List. I noticed this a long time ago but thought it was a bug or something. Now it's haunting me. When I try to print a chart with occupations on it, some show and some don't. Testing it, I found that some appear if I use the first occupation memo tag, and some appear when I use the second. I can get all to appear if I put both in as separate lines and use the delete blank lines option. I'd really like to merge the two sets of tag lists though. Is this possible? Did this happen when I merged two datasets or two databases? Thanks, Lori Bragg
  3. I am wondering how others handle places in an immigration tag. There really two locations involved - the to and the from. Which do you put in the place fields? Do you put the other in the memo field? Or possibly use two tags? How about the ship name? Thanks, Lori
  4. Death Memo

I have a box ancestor chart in which I include Death Group Abbrev Date PlacePrep Place and Death Group Abbr Memo.If no Death date or place is known the lines don't show up. (Remove blank lines is checked.) However if the death date and place are known the memo line prints a "d." even if the memo is blank. I use the memo field for the cause of death, which I rarely have once I get past the 20th century. Is there a way to remove that line when it's blank or is the memo populated with spaces when a death is recorded? Lori Bragg
  5. Death Memo

    Perfect! Thanks. Lori
  6. Death Memo

Thanks. at least I know I'm not crazy! Can I wish here or should I make a separate topic? Lori
  7. Is it possible to put Other data in charts? I'd like to put Children (as in number of children) in an ancestor chart. Lori Bragg
  8. Other data in charts?

I was hoping to take the lazy way and just grab it from the "other data box"! I looked at this tag but it doesn't seem like a tag kind of item - it doesn't really have a date or place or even a single source, unless you the one census (1900?) that gives the number of births and number of children living. Thanks for the answer though. Lori
  9. My new favorite layout

I was confused at first but I think I see - people are accented purple and the witness event color is grey... But this brings up a really good idea (at least for me!) - could we highlight certain tag types? For example, when working on census work, all census type events could be highlighted, then turned off when done. Then BMD events could be turned on at another time. It would probably be too busy if all were turned on all the time... but there are probably reasons to have more than one type on at a time. Wishlist! Lori
  10. When I choose a chart to create the top menu goes grey - as though it is going to put up a report option window or a VCF chart but nothing else happens. No menu items work on TMG; when I hit ESC I can get back to using TMG but I cannot create any reports... Wait, I can't create box-type charts, only list-type. The only thing I've changed recently is loading 6.10 and 6.11 and I'm fairly sure the reports worked after that. Also, I create a custom menu and brought up bookmark manager and looked at it. That's it. I've booted my machine to clear any junk. Any other ideas?
  11. No Box Charts creatable

Same from menu or toolbar; VCF opens fine by itself; tried calling report while VCF was open, noluck. Then I figured out what you meant about the layout windows and poof! there it was! You saved me! Thanks, Lori
  12. My new favorite layout

Well, as I learned so much from this thread, I thought I'd participate too. I never seem to run out of things to learn about TMG! Bookmarks, custom toolbars and even how to get a screenshot to share! I knew they were there, just seeing them in use made me want to try. Think I'll go check out NoteWonder! Thanks everyone for sharing! Lori
  13. New version?

Just wondering if there are any plans for a new version? I see a lot of wishlist items, just hoping someone could reveal any secret plans.... Lori Bragg
  14. Wishlist

Me too, me too! I like this one. In fact, a whole intuitive user interface for exhibits would be great. I get so lost... Lori
  15. I have created several charts and, of course, now everyone wants one of their family. That is great news; however, some want things just a tad different. This entails some cut and paste to get what they want. Is it possible to copy things like box size, line thickness, etc to another chart (ie, from Ancestor chart to Descendant chart) so that when I do the cut and paste they are all the same? I know I can write down all those items and change the options as I go... I'm just lazy I guess!
  16. I have created several charts using accents to color the boxes. Most come out beautifully but I have one that doesn't color the boxes at all. The accent I'm using is Ancestor Interest and I have used 1 for the paternal line and 2 for the maternal line. The chart includes ancestor siblings and the boxes would only be colored for the direct ancestors, leaving the rest white. However, all of the boxes are white. Is there something that is overriding the "use accents" box under the boxes tab? I know this works from the other charts I've done and I have checked that the accents exist. I'm probably missing something I just can't see it! Any help appreciated. Lori Bragg
  17. Accents in ancestor chart

Thanks! At least I know I'm not crazy... I always try to figure stuff out first but often I miss them. Good work around - I know that works! Lori
  18. I really like the automatic relationship tag you can turn on under Preferences/other. Is there any way to be able to filter or accent or report based on this tag? I think it would be more complicated than it looks but it would be helpful, especially when cleaning out merged databases. Even a yes/no flag based on it - as opposed to eighth cousin 16 times removed - so only those without any relationship to the focus person could be flagged or placed in a focus group. And then all my problems would be solved..... Thanks, Lori Bragg
  19. Automatic Relationship tag

I want to again mention this because I am creating a chart for a wedding that shows the relationship of each person to the bride. As the wedding is about a month away I will use a Kinship report along side the main chart. I am piecing together the main chart from several others so that most every relative attending and a few ancestors will be included - every cousin will want to see themselves first I imagine! Anyway, in a perfect world I would combine the chart and the report, putting the relationship in each box under the name and photo. But doing that manually is more than I can gt done along with other research and 3 kids! Lori
  20. Image report

Dumb question? Is there a way to get a report of all people who do/do not have images attached? Or move them to the focus group or mark them in some way? Automatically, I mean. I'm doing a picture chart to map all relatives for a family wedding so people can see how they are related - it's a complicated family! Any help appreciated.
  21. Image report

Brilliant! I knew there was a way... Lori
  22. Is there a way to set printing preferences and make them stick for future charts? For example, I use Super B paper (13"x19") set on landscape but I have to set that up each time. Help appreciated. Lori
  23. Wish list

I know it seems impossible to get more stuff on the screen - I myself have already fine-tuned all 7 windows in TMG. However, I was wondering if it would be feasible to see the source for a tag that is highlighted without clicking on it? Like having the PE and Detail windows linked except there would be a source window that would link to whichever tag you have selected. Just a thought. Lori
  24. Documentation

Is there anyone out there that uses tmg to store absolutely all of their documentation and evidence? This would include scanned paper files, emails, saved digital files – some saved as .jpgs, some as NetSnippets or Local Website Archives, My Ancestry images or links saved at Ancestry.com, similar links at other websites (Scotland’s People, Origins, etc), family photos saved digitally…. It seems like every time I turn around there is another pile I have forgotten about! I am wondering how well tmg works for this purpose. I've read the problems in tracking the relative vs absolute paths which I can see would be a problem sometimes but also things like attaching the doc to all possible people or events and then finding easily again later. Does the "filing system" get cumbersome after awhile? I am wondering because I really am getting confused with documentation all over the place and trying to tie it all together for a family book is becoming a nightmare! Maybe as I have learned to use TMG for so much else it will solve this problem as well? Thanks, Lori Bragg
  25. Documentation

Thanks Theresa. It seems a daunting task but I'm not sure there are any other tools out there. Lori
