  1. I wouldn't worry about the unlinked names. I have many of those in my database. I find people with my surname in a vicinity I know my family was at, I can be fairly certain they are somehow related. I don't want to lose track of them even though I don't yet know how they relate so I enter them as unlinked people. If/When I find a link it is easy to connect them. Even if you never link them they don't cause problems.

I will have to investigate merging the branches I have. The scary part is that I am sure most will not link, so it may become unmanageable in trying to work on so much data ! On the positive though, I may find a dew surprises too!

  2. You could create a custom tag for this and enter the identification number in the memo field.

Or if you use the Find A Grave information as a source, you could create a source element for the ID number or put it in the citation details.

Is there a way I can add a field so that I can enter Find-a-Grave memorial identification numbers to the individuals in my database?

  3. The lack of Unicode support is an increasing problem. If WhollyGenes would make a statement about their plans for dealing with this shortcoming, or even a statement acknowledging that they actually plan to deal with it then it wouldn't continue to be discussed "ad nauseum". Ignoring the problem isn't going to make it go away.

  4. Terry's #1 is a huge advantage of TMG over other genealogy software. Until you actually use it, I'm not sure you can fully appreciate it's value. A typical marriage tag in other programs only allow the groom and bride to be attached to it. With TMG, you can also link the maid of honor, best man, bridesmaids, groomsmen, etc. This ability to cross reference not only allows you to add interesting narrative, but can be helpful in working around your brick walls because it allows you to easily see other paths you might be able to research.

    1. The ability to enter multiple people in an event, and cross-reference them in narrative output. This saves data entry time for events like census, family moves, wills, and the like because you only enter the event once for all the people involved. Then you can, if you wish, have them mentioned in each other's narratives - for example have the narrative for the parent mention all the other members of the household present in a census. If you create a website with Second Site these mentions can become links so the reader can instantly move to that person's narrative.

  5. What I'm looking for is the ability to make a list of every instance of the event as it is documented in each of those different sources, so that I can see exactly which version of the event is connected with which particular source:

    est. 1852-1853 ; birth ; Agnes X ; Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts ; <brief note> ; 1910 census, X family, Chelsea

    15 Aug 1852 ; birth ; Agnes X ; Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts ; par Hugo X, Estera Y ; Agnes X birth cert, Boston, 1852, vol 452, p 523

    18 Aug 1853 ; birth ; Agnes X ; Chelsea?, Suffolk, Massachusetts ; par Hugh X, Esther Y ; family lore

I currently keep an Excel file to track this information, because I haven't been able to find an app that will give me these six columns in one report. (And I guess, if all the lineage-linked genealogy databases classify events in this one-to-many way, that's partly why I haven't found one to do what I want, yet!)

The above examples could (and in my database would) be entered as multiple events. I would have one birth event entered for each of the variations you listed above. One would be flagged as primary. Each birth event would have it's own source linked to it. If entered this way, I think the citation report would provide you what you are looking for. Additionally, I think you will find that just looking at the person in TMG will allow you to easily see the variations and how they are sourced.

  6. RootsMagic developers have apparently chosen not to offer that option to ensure that users don't accidentally mess up their data by stripping off incompatible UTF-8 characters. Since most users don't know the difference between ANSI and UTF-8 they won't understand the consequences of chosing one over the other.

The real problem is that TMG doesn't accept the UTF-8 characters.

Can Rootsmagic (which I don't use) output ANSI format GEDCOM's?

  7. I have a 64bit Windows 7 ultimate system. Last night with another application I had a need for XP, so I tried installing the virtual XP mode. It was surprisingly easy and worked very well with the application I needed. I have not tried to install TMG in it so I can't speak to your specific question, but I was happy with how my SQL Server worked in the XP virtual window.

I did come accross an article about downloading a free "Windows XP mode" for windows 7 (I suspect a virtual window). Has anyone tested this with reports on 32 or 64 bit machines?

  8. I second this suggestion. Second Site is a wonderful way to share information with family. Second Site comes with lots of options that allow you to share as much or as little as you want with other people. The generated data is very easy to browse through. The hyperlinks make it easy to jump from one item to another. Even the casual user will find they are intrigued with knowing more about the family. The trick is getting them to then give you some feedback back!!!!

Instead, I suggest you create a website with Second Site, and share that.

If you set the program to put one person per page, it would be easy for your readers to print the pages for individual people and make notes on them.

  9. I use static pages on my Second Site web site and have no problems with people showing up on different pages when a rebuild (unless I have merged people :-) )

A dynamic site builder has some appeal, but how do they interact with search engines. On my static site, names in my database show up in a Google Search and bring people to my site that might not otherwise visit it. If the data is stored on the server and only served up on request, does that mean that none of the names would be picked up in a search engine? If so, it seems the static web sites are more useful for connecting with other researchers.

  10. When this was posted in the Oct 2008 newsletter,

"For a limited time, registered users of TMG Gold v6.09 or later can now purchase additional copies of the program for friends and family for HALF OFF the regular retail price! At just $39.97, the price of TMG Gold Edition on CD-ROM has never been lower. Copies of the program that are purchased now will also get a FREE upgrade to TMG v8 when it is released."

I thought the version 8 release was just around the corner, possibly even by Christmas. Normally, a company won't offer a free upgrade too far in advance of the release date.

I'm on a Windows 7 - 64 bit machine, but fortunately, I use Second Site for most of my output so the limitations haven't affected me much.

It does seem we have been waiting for version 8 for a very long time. I'd rather wait, though, and have it work properly than end up with my data corrupted. Maybe it will be ready by this Christmas (sigh)

  11. Shows how often I print reports with the primary designation is an issue. Thanks for correcting me. Sheila

Principal 1 may have only 1 marriage so that marriage should be primary.

Each pair of people can have only one primary Marriage Tag - a person can have as many primary marriages as there are different spouses (plus one with no spouse, if you can figure out a need for it).

  12. Principal 1 may have only 1 marriage so that marriage should be primary.

This may be a first marriage for Principal 2 and you have decided to make the 2nd marriage primary for this person.

That would correctly be showing Principal 1 primary and principal 2 non-primary for this particular marrage tag.

  13. "I added the parent folder because it won't take the sub-folders adding to the list. I end up with the same message: "44 external exhibit files were checked. 41 exhibit files were not found""

I'm not sure why you were having trouble adding the sub-folders, but that is why you are still getting 41 exhibits not found. Since you only entered the parent folder, then only the parent folder is checked. (An option to check sub-folders would be a nice enhancement. )

"If I load an image, it displays the correct path for a moment, then disappears."

I would guess this is related to why you couldn't enter the sub-folders, but I don't have any good advise on what to do. Is is possible the exhibits are stored in a folder that you don't have access too.

  14. A tag type does let you set a default place style. So, a "Census" Place Style could be set as the default on a Census Tag type. I created a "Cemetery" place style. I have it set as the default on the Burial tag. That way I don't need to remember to change it to cemetery when I add a new tag. By setting the default, I eliminated a lot of those "Do you want to change the style" messages

  15. You could enter a date of Aft yyyy-mm-dd. This would not be a made up date since one would hope the person wasn't buried before they died. :-) This will cause the burial tag to sort after the death tag.

If you don't want the After dates, then just enter a date in the sort date field that is a day later than the death. The sort dates don't display any where. They are just to control the order of the tags.

    Sheila Altenbernd

    Hello all,

How would you TMG experts get the order correct without making up a date? Would the single custom "BurialasDeath" tag mentioned in this thread (or something similar) actually be the way to go here?

  16. Jim,

Unfortunately, it isn't as simple as changing all the W's to Y's. I have 5 or 6 different flags with a lot of bogus values in them. I'm going to have to set them all back to a ? and run a series of LOP reports to try and get them set back correctly again.

And if all of the 'W' values should be one of the other settings, it's easy to correct using the secondary output option of the List of People report. For example, you could change all 'W' values for the flag to 'Y'.

  17. No, I haven't merged any datasets or copied people from other datasets. I use only one project and one dataset. Occassionally I look at a Gedcom in a different dataset, but I haven't done that in a long time either.

    Sheila,

Have you merged data sets, or copied people from one data set to another? If you do either, and have flags with the same name but different values, the people you bring in will keep those values even though they are not "legal" in the new data set.

  18. I've noticed that some of the flags in my database no longer have correct values in them. A possible value is Y,N,? , but a W appears. At first I thought I must have previously selected the wrong flag when doing an update. I do periodically run a List Of People report and then use the secondary output to update the flag. I see how I could have updated the wrong flag, but I don't see I could have gotten an invalid value into it.

I'm in the process of running LOP reports to get the flags back in order, but I'd like to figure out what caused this so it doesn't happen again. I'm also concerned that there might be some other corrupted data issues that I haven't noticed yet. Has anyone else seen this or have any ideas?

I routinely run Optimize and VFI.
