Yes, I set the Backup location on both machines to be c:\documents and settings\<loginid>\Family History or in other words, from the selector 'My Documents>Family History'Is that the backup location you set in the project preferences on the laptop - and is it still set to that path on the PC?If you have any other path differences between the laptop and the PC - say in tmg's supplemental folders like projects and exhibits - you will want to check out the warning in Help > Restore > Section 3 so you don't run into any problems there.
Virginia
I'd never seen the Preferences settings on Page 3 of the Wizards before, as I tend to only backup the project.
On this occasion it was a New Project for my wife's family so I backed up customisations too.
I 'think' I've done that before in previous versions of TMG without this problem!
-
Does TMG write the backup location to your project backup?
I created a new project on my laptop, and "My Documents" is in a user called '1' and I backup to a folder called 'Family History'
I did a full Backup (customisations etc) to save my accents and the like
On my PC "My Documents" is in 'Neil' and again I have a folder called 'Family History'
So I restored the laptop project, all was OK
I then did a backup on the PC when I was done, and it re-created the laptop path (C:\Documents and Settings\1\My Documents\Family History)
Is this correct behaviour?
I don't recall this happening in prior versions to 6.12

Hi
I've noticed all my reports have birth tags that use 'at' rather than 'in'
Example
If I know the Town but not exact place, it will say:
Marion DAVENPORT b circa MAy 1882 at Bromsgrove etc etc
Where do I change this to 'in' ?
Is it possiblt to have this so if I have an address it says 'at' but 'in' if I don't!!?

You must have bought something like a Dell? When I move to a new computer, I usually hold on to the old computer for a while to make sure I've got everything off that I need, and this time I networked it to the new computer - which really simplified the move. In this case it allowed me to use my old parallel-port laserjet printer networked until I could find a mini-centronics adapter and usb cable to use with the new computer. This is the first computer I've bought since they stopped including parallel ports and the old PC keyboard/mouse connectors.I work in IT, and we can buy in ready built PC's, and mostly custom build for our customers. We still use motherboards that have parallel and PS2 (keyboard/mouse) ports as well as the modern USB varieties, so that customers can use old equipment like printers.
So don't necessarily get 'scared' by thinking you might need to buy a new printer etc.

Terry, brilliant thanks.Neil,I'm confused about what you are trying to do. Are you trying to use both filters and the Focus Group? They are separate ways of selecting a group of people. You can use either, but not together.
A filtered group will allow you to include a person and their ancestors and/or descendants. If you use a filter like:
Is an Ancestor of ID# 2:1834
and then below add Descendants you can also get the sibling and their descendants. But you won't get the spouses of those siblings and their descendants. To do that requires a temporary flag and multiple steps.
Alternately, you could use the Focus Group. First, add you wife to the FG. Select her, check the Ancestors and/or Descendants options, and click the Add Others button to add her ancestors and/or descendants. Click Select All and add descendants to get siblings and cousins. Click Select All, and then add Spouses to get the spouses of the cousins. Click Select All and add Ancestors to get the parents of the spouses (caution, when you do this, either limit the number of generations, or use Ctrl-Click to unselect yourself, or you will get all your ancestors, which you were trying to avoid.)
I thought I'd used the FG in the manner I listed before. Obviously not!
Created my project a treat.
Thanks again

Hello
I was trying, via help I found on the Forums, to create a Filter Group to be able to create a new Project for just my wife's side of the family
So, I used the FG filter as follows:
ID Number =Equal 2:1834 (My wife) END
OK so far, that shows two entries - her maiden and married names.
so I then changed it to:
ID Number =Equal 2:1834 AND
Is an Ancestor or Descendant of ID# 2:1834 END
This gives me a window saying there are 12 people but when I OK this the FG Window is empty!
Using TMG 6.12 UK Gold
IF! I get this to work (With your help), is this the best way to create another project (Via List of People report)
How can I get to show more than 12 (IE her Uncle's/Aunt's families etc.
Thanks
Neil
PS I have used the maintenance options on the current project, and recently re-installed due to another problem

This was a response stating that only Acrobat PDF output is available in terms of saving a file in Reports>Pedigree.Yes, that's the only file type that is available for the Pedigree Report. The Compressed Pedigree does offer other file types. Why is that? Is it the Graphical content?

Found my code, unlocked properly, and the problem is now fixed. Thanks to Virginia and Vera for persisting and responding very quickly! You should have an unlock code from v6 (you mentioned v5 above), and you must use the same email address you used when you purchased v6. Version 6 came out 22 Dec 2004 if that would give you a clue to a place to look for the email.Virginia

Update.
Disaster. I downloaded the TMG6 UK version from the website and after uninstalling, I installed this version
I found my email with the Unlock code from way back when I purchased V5, but the Unlock screen says this is an expired Trial version.
When I enter my name, email and unlock code (I did both a copy/paste and manual entry) I get a screen saying this is Invalid data!!
I've emailed Support.
Any idea's?

Every time I upgrade point versions, I always answer No to the Language dialogue as I use nothing but UK English. Perhaps that's wrong? The message on the warning comes from strings.dbf (the file that holds the language translations). If it does not print properly it suggests that the Uk langusge translation for that warning has been corrupted.Did you install the new language translations when asked in the upgrade? Or have you modified the English UK language yourself and mistranslated that line?
Vera, that was a typo 'Rename' = I did delete the CDX file as mentioned.
I will re-install the whole shooting match later on this evening, must find my Install code first though.

VeraHi, Neil, forgot to thank you for the screenshot provided, sorry.
Could you please additionally provide two other ones also?
While you are on the "Add Person" screen please click on the Setup button at the lower left.
1) Now the screen "Add Person Template" appears - please make a screenshot of it.
From the "Add Person Template" screen please click on the "Style" button on the right side near the middle of that screen.
2) Now the screen "Master Style List" is visible - please make a screenshot of this one also.
The fun continues. Renaming the file had no effect, so I am going to email the files you requested.
Meanwhile, here are the screenshots you asked for.

Hi John,Mappoint is the technology behind Microsoft's online mapping servce Live Local. Are you referring to Live Local, or to the desktop program?I am not sure how you could use the desktop version of MapPoint, mostly because I don't know anything about that product. If you can import a list of places, then I bet we can arrange for TMG Utility to export a suitable data file. If you can point (deliberate pun) me to online import specs for MapPoint, I'll take a look and see if I can modify the place export feature to support it.
I have the Desktop version of Mappoint, it will Import XLS, TXT and CSV files to name but a few.
See this MS page Using Mappoint and Excel which gives an example of analysing Sales data.
I'm sure if somehow you could output something in TMG or your Utility with stats of where people in your project lived it could work
I tried exporting Excel data from TMG, but it created lots of files, all of which crash my version of Excel (Beta 2007)
-
Hmm!! Did both, and no change! It's such a strange problem. You could try unchecking that warning in Preferences, close TMG, reopen and reselect that warning. Wouldn't hurt to reset the Add Person template either (click the Setup button on the Add Person screen and then select Reset Template). Are you using any custom name styles by chance?Virginia
Not sure about 'Custom Name Styles'
On Preferences>Custom Styles, everything is greyed out
I guess by my reply, that either Custom Styles is not what you mean, or out of ignorance, I don't know how to create a Custom Name Style.
Where's the manual!!

VirginiaIn your MS Windows Properties, what size font are you using?Virginia
I made no changes to the Font sizes when I changed to 1024x768, just accepted the defaults, for the record it is Tahoma 8pt.
Here is a screen shot.Hmmm, could you please provide a screenshot which shows the "Add Person" screen as well as the somehow truncated message screen. But please make sure that the message screen doesn't cover the "Add Person" screen - so it might be necessary to drag it a bit apart.
That would really be appreciated.
By the way, I have tried this on my laptop, same projects, and as far as I can tell, same prefs, and the name DOES appear on the dialogue!!!!

Is it possible to output any data from TMG that could be used in MS Mappoint to show distribution of your Ancestors?

Thanks a lot, Neil for the detailed answers....so the next interesting thing will be if you see the same effect with TMG's Sample Project.
To answer Vera and Virginia
I rebooted, same effect.
I opened the Sample Project, no change
I changed to Standard layout, ditto.
I have everything visible on screen (IE the dialogue box isn't partially hidden from view)

Answers so farHi, Neil,I just tried to replicate this using TMG v6.11 US Version but didn't get this.
So a few questions and suggestions to test:
1) are you using the US version or the UK version?
2) if you do the same thing while using TMG's Sample Project do you get the same effect?
3) besides the somehow incomplete warning.... when you click on "Accept" on the warning screen and then check i. e. the Project Explorer is the name of the new added person sorted correctly?
4) have you recently used TMG's maintenance tools (Validate File Integrity - run it as many times as needed until it reports no errors - and Optimize)? If not I would suggest doing so.
1 - UK Version 6.12 following this mornings update, and problem replicates, though I didn't reboot my PC after the update
2 - See earlier reply, trying to figure out how to get the Project wizard open again so I can open the sample project
3 - Yes, it sorts correctly, married names are changed as expected etc
4 - Yes, I had already tried that
Neil
Virginia, I will try this later, I updated to 6.12 thinking it might be one of the bug fixes but it is the same in the update (though as mentioned, I didn't reboot)To get the Welcome screen back: File > Preferences > Startup and Exit. Then you can select the Sample project from the Welcome screen.Or - while you are in TMG, use: File > Open - go up one level to the TMG main folder and doubleclick on the Sample folder and click on 'sample.pjc'.
Is this the only message box (warning, prompt) that is truncated?
What is your screen resolution?
Virginia
My Resolution is 1024x768, and this is the only dialogue so far I have spotted.

Before I reply, how do I get the Test Project?
I unticked the box on the opening screen so I always get 'Last' project and can't seem to find how to get that screen back

Aha - I found it, i need to use Journal instead!Hmm, what am I missing!I am doing Report>Descendancy Indented Narrative
But...
If I click the Options button, I cannot find a Styles section on 'General' or any other Tab.
Using 6.11 UK Gold
Neil
-
Hmm, what am I missing!I believe what you want can be achieved by:1) On the General tab of Option, choose "Custom format" as the style. This "unlocks" many of the other options.
2) On the Names tab, check "Back reference generations."
I am doing Report>Descendancy Indented Narrative
But...
If I click the Options button, I cannot find a Styles section on 'General' or any other Tab.

Is there any way to mimic/replicate the Family Tree Maker 'Genealogy Report' ?
I rather like the way it has Generation No 1 etc and then for each person, in brackets it has their father/grandfather
Example
Caleb3 Brock (John2, Richard1) NB the numbers are superscript showing the Generation number
Thanks

Does anyone else get this with 6.11?
On a person (Female) page, I clicked Add Husband, and put in his name (a new surname)
The Warning dialogue came up to say it was new did I want to add it to the database
However it just says
"is not among the known surnames in this project" instead of
"Stockdale is not .... etc etc"

I received info on 6.10 update in the newsletter. For the last few updates I have been unable to click on "check for updates". When I do, the program shuts down and nothing else happens. I have tried turning off the firewall and virus protection, but that does not help. When I go to the website and attempt to download the update, it reads "you have the current version", but my last downloadable and usable update was 6.08. Help ???Choose the third option down to download the 6.00-6.08 to 6.10 patch

For Jim Byram's benefit, I have implemented the TMG replacement file as per your instructions on both my PC and laptop, which both had this error.
I have run both at least 20 times without the error occuring since!!!
Sod's law I suppose.
If it does, I will of course pass on the details

Including witnesses in reports
in Older Products and Versions
Posted · Report reply
I'm having a mad moment.
How, in reports such as Journal or Descendant narrative, do I include witnesses in sentences?
It's probably somewhere totally obvious!
