  1. Master Tag Type List

I agree. At some point in the future, this would be a great enhancement.
  2. TMG-L

Coming up on 6 pm here on the East Coast and somebody at Rootsweb seems to have opened the flood gates! Loads of email on the TMG-L over the past hour or two.
  3. TMG-L

MAYBE Rootsweb is starting to come back online. I finally got two pieces of TMG email!
  4. TMG-L

I think it has to be down, Teresa. It's the only thing that would explain the lack of email. Actually, I think it might have been down for a couple of day's now. I am subscribed to multiple mailing lists and nothing (and I do mean nothing) is coming in for any of them. I checked Rootsweb, but the only thing they indicate is that they were closing shop on the 21st and would reopen until this morning. Maybe Rootsweb went down while they were gone and nobody has been around to post an outage message. I initially thought that the lack of mail might have been due to Christmas Day, but this seems to have been going on for about three (or more) day's now.
  5. Mills Source Categories

Actually, it is a matter of belief and as I stated, I do not believe that a combined version is more useful. Clearly, in the case of the book example, I do not see having separate source types for each example as a disadvantage. What is clear is that you and I have "dug in." I am willing to let each have his or her own thoughts on this subject, but I will not speak for them.
  6. Mills Source Categories

You and I obviously have two different trains of thought on this subject. You want to combine similar source types, I don't. You want to create a single combined version (which you have done), I don't. You believe a single combined version is much more useful, I don't. You want to omit obscure source types that you never found a need for, I don't. You do not want one source type that corresponds to each example in Evidence, I'm not sure where I stand on this yet, but I do believe that more is better. You do not think that one source type for each example is useful, I think it could be. Not knowing how other people use the current source types, I don't believe that I'll ever see TMG reduce what is currently available.
  7. Mills Source Categories

No, I don't want thousands of source types. On the other hand, I do believe there will be some expansion of source types based on Elizabeth Shown Mills new book -- maybe not. Users think a lot of different things about a lot of different things about TMG. I don't know that many users think 100+ source types is too many. I do think that some users think 100+ source types is too many, some users think 100+ source types is not sufficient, and some users think 100+ source types is just right. For me, I think the future of source types will have some form of expansion. Looking into my crystal ball, I do not foresee source types decreasing or remaining stagnant.
  8. Mills Source Categories

I know it takes time for these things, but I sure wish the book would hurry up and get released. I assume (Ack...there's that word) TMG will incorporate the new source categories while retaining the form, fit, and function of the older ones.
  9. Version 7

I don't think the subject is touchy at all, it just left me wondering and questioning. My thought was "Why would anyone care?" Then I thought about many of the major software developers that make public their projected software release dates. Ugh! Thank goodness TMG doesn't play that type of ballgame. Then I thought about all the minor releases of TMG that were released as needed and, unlike some other genealogy software, were free. Then I thought about the sheer power of TMG and am convinced that the product more than justifies the initial cost. If I'm not mistaken, Wholly Genes gave a 3 month window as a grace period for users going from TMG5 to TMG6. TMG is one of the best supported software products I've ever seen. The Forum, the mailing list, the Wholly Genes staff, Bob Velke, users just like you and me -- everything is in place and used to get some of the finest support available. Where will TMG be in 10 years? 20 years? Who knows? I venture to guess that there will be a hardcore group of users that will find a way no matter what. That was the mindset of UFT users and was exactly what they did -- they found a way and the way was TMG. Hopefully, you understand now why a few of us wondered "Why?" BTW, TMG does make web pages without using SS.
  10. Version 7

Grimesgang, like RGC, I wonder "why" too? Is there some TMG feature or function you are waiting for that won't be available before version 7.0? There is still an average chance that, whatever the feature or function is, it won't make it into version 7.0. Are you looking for Vista compatibility? As noted elsewhere on this Forum, Vista compatibility is already being looked at. Additionally, TMG-Vista compatibility might not warrant a major release of TMG. Just wondering?
  11. Let's see... the machete? Ah, yes! The machete is normally there for use on family and private cemeteries. Thick undergrowth, brambles, thorn bushes, weeds, low-lying branches, etc. I've been on several cemetery cleanups where a machete was indispensable. I'll admit that I've never taken a machete into a state archive, library, gen or historical socity, etc. I'll also have to admit that there have been a couple of times that I wish I had.
  12. Typeahead buffers

Hi Lorna, I recommend you see a doctor about your problem as soon as you can. You are obviously suffering from TTFS (Typing Too Fast Syndrome). The doctor has many treatment alternatives available and I'm sure he/she will be able to find one that fits your needs. Your problem was recently documented in the Journal of Typing Medicine. The article pointed out that TTFS affects less than 2% of the population. The article also went on to say that depression, inability to maintain ones thought process, dizziness, fatigue, and hyper-tension were all possible side effects if the TTFS is left untreated. Unfortunately, for those of us who suffer from TTSS (Typing Too Slow Syndrome), there is no known cure.
  13. Exhibits and Witnesses

Ack! I hope we don't have to bribe anybody, BUT ... I'd be willing to chip in. I'd love to see a "Principal(s) Only" or "Principal(s) and Witness(es)" switch for Exhibits. I've been hoping that we'll see it someday and that it's just taking awhile to implement the feature. Maybe I'm fooling myself, but I would think that anyone that uses Exhibits would like to see something like this implemented.
  14. US Census Source

I use the Enumeration District for the 1880-1930 U.S. Census because: My census tags provide for it; I'm in the habit; and Elizabeth Shown Mills shows it in her book Evidence!.
  15. What is your favorite report

"VCF charts aren't just for family reunions," how true Virginia. I'm glad Teresa started this Topic. Your chart example gave me an example of what I need to do for a web site project I'm working on. I think that EASY, obvious things sometimes escape me. HA HA HA HA Thanks for posting your example.
  16. Duh! Now why didn't I think of that? An excellent, elegant, easy solution to exactly what I need to do. Thanks for stating the obvious Barbara.
  17. WISHLIST:

Ah-h-h-h, yes. If life could be so easy. Scenario: Start with John Spudmaster; add spouse, Milly Hinklebottom. Add child 1, Priscilla Add child 2, Jethro Add child 3, Petunia Find that Petunia married; add spouse, Reginald Rottenguy. Add Reginald's parents; add father, Jan Rottenguy; add mother, Beuhla Pearltooth. Add Reginald's siblings; 2 brothers & 3 sisters, plus 3 spouses and some children. OK, now back to pick up where I was when I got sidetracked. Hm-m-m-m, my ol' brain doesn't have a clue who I was working on. The good news is that the journey with Jan Rottenguy and Beuhla Pearltooth was real interesting. It seems that Mr. Rottenguy was always mad because folks would joke about his given name, Jan, and tell him he was a girl. At any rate, a back-back-back feature would sure be nice.
  18. Toa asked a question in the Pre-Sales Forum about HTML and TMG. Only "authorized" personnel are allowed to respond to questions in the Pre-Sales Forum. I thought maybe some of us might have comments for Toa, so have started this topic in TMG v6. John responded with the following: Toa, I heartily recommend you take a look at the links John provided in John's post in the Pre-Sales Forum. There are many web sites to review and just as many ways to present a family. TMG has some pretty robust capabilities and can produce just about any kind of HTML you are looking for. On the other hand, Second Site (a companion product for TMG) takes out all the guesswork, is powerful yet simple to use, and offers many formats making it extremely flexible and adaptable. As an example of the power of Second Site, several years ago when I first used Second Site, I downloaded the program and had a completely usable, very nice looking web site within 5 minutes. Since that time I've tweaked and changed things so much that I don't remember what that first attempt actually looked like. Second Site is obviously the direction I chose to go, but when you look at some of the web sites out there you will see that TMG can adapt to most any direction you choose for yourself. The sheer power of TMG will amaze you when you really get into it.
  19. Exhibits, Internal or External

I use external and have 1 directory for them. I have a completely different directory that I use for files that are not yet exhibits, so once the file hits exhibit status it just needs to be copied or moved. I use the filename to tell me what I need to know about the exhibit.
  20. New version?

I'm not sure that we will be looking at an entire new version for quite awhile. Most of the things I've seen asked for would seem (to me) to be part of an incremental update. An entire new version would likely mean that major changes to TMG are involved.
  21. Adding people

Absolutely -- go with the common name for the Primary name and use a Name-Var tag for the Latin name. Better yet, like Teresa said, since you seem to be dealing with many of these Latin names make your own Nam-Var Latin tag for them. And remember, once you have the Latin name in a tag of its own, anywhere you need to use the Latin name you can select it with just a click of the mouse.
  22. WISHLIST:

I completely agree that more flexibility is desirable and needed with the bookmarks. Teresa's counties are my "households." I'm working on a project very similar to a "procession" where I need to work on groups of people by household. With that in mind, I would like to create a bookmark set for each "household group" so that I can easily move back and forth among the families.
  23. Google Earth, anyone?

John, Are you speaking in terms of locating each gravesite in a cemetery or just the location of the cemetery? I think I missed something somewhere.
  24. Google Earth, anyone?

Laura, I agree with Teresa, I think he is supposed to be a Ninja. He could be a bank robber, but I think the "eyes" are a dead giveaway. I have a very rudimentary, 8-1/2" X 11" copy of a land/plat map of the area right now and it just isn't enough to do anything with. I've talked with one of my cousins and he made a phone call to the current land owner. Supposedly the current land owner has deeds and land/plat maps that date back to sometime in the mid- to late-1800s! WOOOO HOOOO We are supposed to see him sometime in Sep or Oct and I'm supposed to bring my notebook computer and scanner and anything else we might need. As a sidenote, we've also received permission to scan the pages with entires from an 1850 Family Bible from another cousin of ours! It's shaping up to be a busy fall. In addition to my normal trips and the above trips, I've also got one and possibly two family reunions on the horizon. That's all when I head to the south central part of the state. A week or so ago I just got back from Eastern Shore. Now there's another trip planned for there in Oct. One of the things a small group of us will be doing is going to the Christ Church Cemetery (if its available or to a different one if its not) at dusk. A couple of people will speak about the church itself and its history. Then they will talk about some of the people that are buried there. As a bonus, some of us are going to wear something that is a bit representative of those times. Gonna be busy, busy, busy.
  25. Google Earth, anyone?

I'll admit to being one of the people that contacted Laura privately for additional information. At the time I wasn't sure how applicable this was to Wholly Genes or, more specifically, TMG. That said, I'd someday love to see TMG and GE have some rudimentary integration. Thank you for the update, Laura. To give a somewhat personal example of what can be done with GE -- I zoomed in to a densly wooded section in Halifax County, Virginia. This is a place where I have been to, seen, and photographed 100-120 year old structures that my ancestors lived in. Knowing what I was looking at, I spotted both of them on GE. Looking about 3/4 mile to the east, I saw what appears to be two more structures ... even deeper in the woods! I have already planned a trip this fall/early winter in an attempt to find these other two houses. Ultimately I hope to include most or all of these "findings" in TMG.
