Ron- Which operating system? Which printer driver? What printer resolution? Regards, John
  2. Project Files Gone

In my experience in searching for files in XP, right clicking on the Start button and selecting Explore>>Search may find files not found by other searches.
  3. Mike- Best case (by design) is for picture to consume half the box size. In order to accomplish that, it is necessary to delete all fields except Name field. Choosing smaller text for Name and playing with wraparound might be necessary for extremely long names. John M.
  4. This won't quite do what you want, but it should be quick. Change the color of the font from black to white. . . <g> John M.
  5. Photo Exhibits TMG 6

Tom- Aside from the issue of changing paths in TMG, note that WinXP Documents and Settings folders are designed to gather most data files of all users into one convenient place for easy backup. XP Backup Utility (not necessarily recommended, but found somewhere on the Home Edition Installation CD Rom) will defaut to this folder, as I recall reading somewhere. On the subject of Windows "Backup" be aware that Win 9X Backup Utility files and Win XP Backup Utility files are incompatible. Good luck with your Exhibit path change. Others will point you to various apps and methods of changing the paths. John
  6. Transfer Troubles - Import and Backups

I took a chance the other day and actually used XP Accessories>System Tools>Cleanup to remove various files, including a few weeks accumulation of archived Temporarily Internet Files, and found that Window Explorer actually worked in "real-time" again. Defragmentation on a slower laptop is accomplished more quickly if done more frequently, also.
  7. memos not always printing in report

In addition to exploring all the pulldown menus of MS Word and OpenOffice Writer to expose hidden formatting, the Find and Replace "advanced" options in each of these programs will sometimes find problems that the other may miss. And then, once again, sometimes just running the text through Notepad will help.

I seldom understand any of my comments.<g> But at first it seemed that there might be a mouse problem, and mice are cheap. Later it appeared to me to be a memory leak. Then I went to Google and found that you can search for "memory leak" and any other word and get numerous hits. Every version of Foxpro seems to "fix' some memory leak from the previous version. Also, it appears to me that TMG is now using a certain version of a developer app called "FreeImage" for displaying Exhibit bitmaps. This version can cause memory leaks under certain conditions, according to its creators. If TMG is not using this app, or not using the features that cause a memory leak, I apologize in advance. And then I recently decided to move into the 21st century and bought a new, but obsolete, Graphics card for my obsolete 4X AGP port with half as much memory as my XP computer motherboard formerly had, including the 32mb dedicated to video. And then I threw in an extra gigabyte of ram for good measure. Then, after the purchase, but before the rebate offer expired, I searched for all the potential problems, including possible memory leaks, with that card and other cards with high resolution 3D rendering support. And then I found that 3D rendering cards for games at high frame rates at lower resolutions are not necessarily designed the same way as the best 3D rendering, dual monitor supporting cards for CAD programs. And then I learned, that at least two new, higher bandwidth video card slots have been included in most new motherboards in the last year, and that 8X AGP and PCI are dead for video. And then I physically saw a couple of those slots in new "main" boards at a large Electronics store, mostly by accident, because the store was new to my area. Not that many older genealogists appear to be gamers, but some are, and some have children and grandchildren, and some unwittingly buy computers with this capability. So the question may be, does a TMG user with "Mousing" problems have acceleration software bundled with the video card? Is this software an obsolete version of Open GL, or whatever acceleration software Microsoft was pushing at the moment? Is it enabled in XP Display Properties? Does it affect plain old 2D frame buffering in Foxpro? Sometimes I do not even remember what I have suggested at the moment, let alone understand it. But I surf a lot and throw things out in the hopes that it might ring a bell with a user with problems. The developers and the "super-users" cannot do this because people expect them to always be correct. No one expects exactness, from me, but like a stopped clock I am right once in a while. It is probably by coincidence that the subject of mouse behavior has sprung up on TMG-L since this thread was started. Regards, John
  9. Person Change on Tag Exit

Memory leaks? Any changes in computer hardware? New memory modules? Video card graphics? Video Acceleration off? Monitor screen Resolution changes? Monitor vertical frequency setting way above 60hz? Printer Drivers new? Default printer changed? Adobe Reader 7.07 upgrade? File size approaching 2GB? Heavy use of Exhibits? Tried a different wired mouse? Bad center wheel on mouse?

Dale- Perhaps your house of cards on your D:\ drive, as evidenced by your posting of 20 Jan has indeed fallen down as Phil warned. There may be something unique about your D drive installation that has confused the TMG update process, including the possibility that you, yourself, inadvertently put your backup data files an incorrect, but similarly named Project/Program/Common path in order to install on D:\.. At the very least, you might look closely at the Windows folders named "Program", "Project(s)", "Common", and "Common File" in both Windows Explorer and the Registry, on both your computer and your wife's, on both the C:\ and D:\ drives to see if you can find any obvious clues from any differences. Good luck, John

Yep. Just about what I expected. Wouldn't have commented, except for the "we" on this thread, followed by the "I" on the other. I grew up halfway between the Southern and the Southwestern United States. When we said, "You", we meant one person. When we said. "You all", It seemed to indicate three or more. In between, I dunno. But back on the topic of Dale's computer with Word 2003, does he also have Access? In my layman's web surfing earlier this week, I ran across something about Access 2003 screwing up Richtx file installations. Seemed to be with Access at the developer level, not the typical layman user level of Access. Dunno. Didn't understand it, so didn't mention it before. Didn't want to post publicly on this thread at the time. John

Jim- May I respectfully ask what the meaning of "we" is? Over the past year or so, I have had a hard time figuring out which forum participants are "we', and which are "they", with "they" referring to Wholly Genes Inc. Posting privileges in the "pre-sales" forum by seemingly non-TMG personnel muddy thing up even more. I have a particular interest, because on Monday, January 23, 2006, at 6:11 PM local PST, I sent a message to another TMG user, with a copy to Phil Dee of WhollyGenes, which included the following concerning this thread. It included the following " (quote) "(snip) So, is Dale's problem one of paths? Quite possibly......Or is it one of a missing "Media Viewer" DLL? Not likely? ......Or a missing or incorrect version of Riched*.dll or Richtx.ocx? Possibly....(snip) Peace, John" (unquote) I just wondered about the timing. . . . Peace, John
  13. Documentation

Now that Jim has publicly stated on behalf of support that Image and Internal document storage and viewing in TMG is alive and well as long as the proper upgrade path to TMG 6.07 is used, perhaps it is time to take another look at XMP metadata storage with keywords. I also just noticed in control Panel that Pixvue (Pixvue.com) has taken the liberty of setting itself up as a separate category in XP Control Panel. Pixvue is one of many interesting photo indexing utilities. It has taken the latest Adobe metadata templates for image files, standardized them, and made keywords easily searchable with Windows Indexing Service, as well as Google Desktop, etc. Adobe has announced plans to standardize metadata fields for PDF files as well. MS Windows Doc files and OpenOffice.org Writer odt files each have various metadata properties fields for use by the end user. Whether you want you life history in every doc and jpg file that passes your way is another matter. But it is worth looking into. TMG is already installing a Media Viewer for images that has built in XMP metadata support. But TMG is apparently not using the metadata fields yet, which is good, for there is a memory leak in the version in TMG 6.07 according to the devlelopers of that program. John M.

Phil- Perhaps this whole thread should just be "judiciously" deleted, as it is apparently unique to one individual's problems. I'll promise to be good and just use this forum for its intended purpose of occasionally checking on cruise information, etc., from now on. john

FWIW, this Microsoft KB article on files (folders) and file path length and deletion popped up in a Google search. It might come in handy before all the problems are solved. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=320081 Additionally, I personnaly ran into a seemingly unrelated file deletion problem recently when trying to delete linked jpg files from a folder used for testing TMG Journal Report Exports to MSWord and OOo Writer. The files kept multiplying like rabbits when I held down certain keys and tried to do a mass delete. Then I had problems deleting them singly, but finally succeeded (apparently). As to my suggestion a few posts above about toggling printer drivers, it was a "grasping at straws" suggestion. But from Dale's last post above, it might not hurt to do a Search for files or folders names with the word "common" included. Then, after doing another uninstall of TMG, but before doing a reinstall, another search for "common" might be in order, followed by some judicious deletions. Then compare, on a character by character basis, the file names containing trailing underscores__ in the TMG folder vs. the error messages. Also downloading and running AVG anti-virus checker, which might find something new, shouldn't hurt as long as the regular virus checker is disabled temporarily. Yesterday's AVG download was unusually robust. John

Dale and others- Although this error seemed quite similar to a Norton (2000?) Anti-virus script blocking error reported by FTM (9?) users with Word 2000 linking a few years back, I threw out every other concept I could think of in my various postings. Since Dale is the only one who has publicly reported the problem, and since TMG support reportedly could not duplicate it with his database, and since Dale has also reported a high concern for security measures following previous unpleasant experiences, it seemed that it might be time to revisit "script blocking" or firewall blocking of certain ports, including printer ports? Anybody have any thoughts on those lines, so that TMG support could at least find the problem and work around it? John M.

Dale- Just because you haven't added any "shareware" to your computer doesn't mean that the application developers also show such restraint.<g> But first, if you want to try something simple, how about going into control panel and changing your Default printer to a different one on LPT1 on your main computer (no networked printers). Then close and open TMG to see what happens. Then if that doesn't do anything, deletete the Wholly Genes PDF writer and any FTM (PDF) Printers. and toggle your default printer back and forth a couple of times. Then reopen TMG and see if anything changes. John Moran
  18. PDF files

You may have a later version, but according to the Adobe Acrobat 4 User Guide, there are several variations of "Optimize". This may be the one you selected: "Optimize PDF. Select this setting to reduce the PDF file size by removing repeated background text, line art, and images and replacing them with pointers to the first occurrences of those objects." In addition, images may be saved at "screen resolution" - assuming you have an old small screen Apple Mac - "of 72 dpi" in the Adobe Acrobat application and 300 or 600 dpi in Amyuni. The last time I tried to make heads or tails out of the Ghostscript site, it seemed that the preferred lossless compression method was png, although that does not mean that Amyuni uses png. It also seemed, on the Ghostscript site, that there were some unhappy campers among "open source" developers involved in that enterprise and that there was a little bet of regression in the Pdf versions now offered, as certain features were retracted and made proprietary. I think it had to do mostly with an editing module, but not sure without rechecking. John M.
  19. Are you sure that the timeframe is February 2004, and not 2005 after TMG 6 was released?
  20. Restoring to a removable drive

Laurance- Win XP does not currently incorporate a standardized CD/DVD utility for packet writing in UDF. But any TMG user with XP or Win 98 can backup any file from the hard drive to a CD or DVD disk with a couple of mouse clicks using the bundled software that came with the drive or the computer. Adding still another non-standard CD/DVD "backup" utility to TMG at this time would not necessarily make anyone's life all that much simpler. Although I never use "InCD" brand CD/DVD UDF packet writing feature, I find that Ahead Nero software has installed an Icon on my Desktop SysTray for immediate disk formatting if I desire to do so. If I want to burn a "regular" CD in, say, default "universal" Joliet format, I can open The Nero Burning software directly. When burning in the CD/DVD UDF packet writing mode, drives incorporating the "Mount Rainier" firmware can format "on the fly", so that the entire disk need not be formatted ahead of time. But, as with all new "standards", some corporations win and some lose. Hence the delay by Microsoft in incorporating drag and drop UDF backup directly in the XP operating system. Ref. http://www.plextor.be/technicalservices/su...h&printer=False John
  21. Restoring to a removable drive

Although reading up on Mount Rainier (not Ranier) UDF CD formatting can be informative for some users, it does not appear likely that TMG has any direct support for its use - and TMG may hang if you try. Regrets. I thought from reading casually reading the TMG forum in years past that TMG had direct CD backup support. IMHO, from following the subject on onother active forum, NOT having this support is a GOOD idea. John
  22. Restoring to a removable drive

Never actually tried a backup myself - for posterity that is - but if you haven't bought any new CD hardware in the last couple of years, do a search for "Mt. Ranier". Then, if you upgrade, make sure you get DVD +/- drive capability in addition to Mt Ranier (or generic equivalent) CD packet writing R/W chipset firmware on the drive.... plus whatever else is state of the art.... Or so I've read...but not recently. John M.
  23. Exhibits Error

Phil and Dale- The links on the Google.com site seem to indicate that it is the totality of the number of *.doc or *.txt files on a local computer system that might run up against limits, and not just those included in the TMG database. Google stated that earlier versions of their "Desktop" app did not index *.txt files. John M.
  24. Exhibits Error

Yesterday I was only being halfway facetious by suggesting that the "GO" in the "GOMEDIAVIEWER" could be Google related. But I did find that if you want to find the dirt on "Google Desktop" indexing, search on Yahoo, and if you want to find the problems with MS Office/Word 2003 enterprise indexing, search Google. It may be that it is better if TMG users avail themselves of no other 3rd party metadata or doc file content indexing schemes, including those in Windows XP, Google Desktop, Microsoft Office, and graphic viewers, such as Pixvue. The amalgam of utilities that comprise TMG may be tied together in such a way that slowing things down with "realtime" indexing may be preventing TMG from locating data files in very large projects. Here are a couple of URLs for consideration. Also consider the more likely culprit, Word 2003's "improvements". http://desktop.google.com/support/bin/answ...24755&topic=201 http://desktop.google.com/support/bin/answ...26471&topic=198 John M.

Dave- Is it possible that you have installed the Google Video Viewer or some other free download with a similar sounding name, such as the Google Indexing utility that might be interfering with TMG 6.07? It would seem that TMG support could have solved your problem if this is merely and internal text viewing problem. (I did play around with attaching doc files, generated from OpenOffice.org's Writer, with both MSWORD 2002 and OOo 2.0 associated as primary doc file opeinig application, but got no inspirations that way. Well, not unless your Word Normal.dot template is corrupted.) It does also appear that somewhere along the line TMG slipped in new graphic image management software with included, but so far unused, metadata support. Perhaps there is some conflict with XP operating system and some 3rd party metadata indexing software occuring on your machine?? John
