Cite what you are looking at. If you are looking at two sources, cite them both. This shouldn't be a big deal: You set-up just two sources in the Master Source List. Once you have cited both of them for one birth, its just a matter of using F3 for the rest. However, if you are looking at two volumes of the same series of books, you can set-up one source - if that turns you on - and record that there are two volumes with different contents. Include lots of notes under the "Supplemental" tab in "comments." For either, enter citation detail as needed. Make it as complicated or as simple as you want it. No carpal tunnel necessary. Earl

Does anyone have suggestions about how I might visually "flag" individual TAG entries in the Detail view of the main screen? I occasionally enter data in a Tag item that I still have questions about or want to go back to check-out. For reminders, I have already created a Flag for the person, and in most cases, made a note in the Research Log... however, I must generate a report to remind me to follow-up. I would like a "visual reminder" when I look at the records in the Person View that a Tag item I entered needs follow-up. (Ideally, I would like to have a column where a check mark or exclamation point would appear for the Tag in question,... or a line-item red accent color to assign to a Tag, or... (something that smacks-me-in-the-face) but, this is Wish List stuff.) Any suggestions? Earl

(I should have thought of it myself.) Until "Accents for Tags" are built into the base product - which will probably be a long time in coming - I can live with this. I have a general question to readers of this form... I am going to create a new TMG Tag for "Separated"; (I have noticed I have quite of few of these "events" in my genealogy ... and, I want to assign a GEDCOM Tag to it. Of course, "Separated" and "Legally Separated" are not included in the list of tags for GEDCOM Standard 5.5.1 - quite an oversight, if you ask me, since GEDCOM Tags exist for Marriage Settlement (MARS), Retirement (RETI), and other somewhat dubious events (which, of course, are not a concern for this forum). If you have created a TMG Tag for "Separated", I would be curious to know what GEDCOM Tag you have chosen to assign to it. Do you use EVEN, MISC, or something else? Thanks for your reply, Earl P.S. I am a long-time TMG user, and just recently became aware that a GEDCOM Tag exists for "Cremated" (CREM). I have since added it. Thanks for your insightful reply, John. I knew posting a comment here was the right thing to do! I had completely forgotten to consider the GEDCOM Groups issue. Considering GEDCOM's limitations, assigning the GEDCOM Tag "DIVF" (Divorce Filed) is perhaps the best thing to use for creating new TMG Tags "Separated" and "Legally Separated" in my database. It is somewhat appropriate (both Separation and Divorce Filed do not mean a Marriage has ended), and it falls into a "Family Event" Group that can handle two principals. Best regards, Earl

I would like to search and replace some mispelled names that I wrote into the Memo fields. The Master Event List displays the Memo field, but of course, the program will not search it. (Why not?????) How can do this easily? I'm stumped. Thanks much, Earl

This is a very, very minor thing... I do not see any virtue in keeping "Reindex" and "Optimize" as separate Maintenance functions. Please combine them in the next release of TMG. Thanks, Earl

I didn't realize that. It doesn't mention anything about that in the manual (see page 52) or in the Help. (I may be mistaken, but I think in TMG v.3 and/or v.4, you had to reindex before optimizing... Oh well. No big deal.) I won't be using Reindex in the future, only Optimize. Thanks much, Earl

I have helped a number of new users to TMG with their issues in the past. One of their biggest complaints - and the thing that has actually caused more than one to stop using TMG and change to another program - is the reports. - - Recently, I was helping someone get started who had been a Family Tree Maker user get started with TMG, and the same old issue came up again... When new users convert their existing genealogical databases to TMG, they have hundreds of entries without dates. The standard procedure - really a work around - to get a narrative report to print in a logical sequence is simply is to make sure every Tag has a Sort Date. - - Not a big deal in my book. - - However it drives many new users nuts! They don't understand why a program like TMG does not have logic built into it to put, for example, a Burial (with no date) after a Birth (with a date), especially since their old program was "smart enough". Of course, experienced users know and use John Cardinal's "Set Sort Dates" routine in his TMG Utility companion tool. http://www.johncardinal.com/tmgutil/sortdates.htm The logic from this program should be built directly into the standard version of TMG. - - At the very least, TMG should contain in John's "Set Sort Date" routine to run on command. It would go a long way to make new users happier with TMG, and match a feature than is already built into many other competitive genealogical software products. Food for thought. Earl

Hi Jim, I am going to ask a rather obvious question just to make sure I am covered.... TMG v6.12 cannot print word processor reports under Windows Vista x64 according to the document you prepared. However, I will be able to send reports out as PDF files (with the PDF software included in TMG) and print them that way, correct? Thanks, Earl

Is there a way to change or control which spouse appears in the Children and Siblings windows? I am not certain, but it seems that the name of the last spouse to whom someone was married is the one that appears. Can I choose to the display the first spouse, or whichever one I prefer? I searched the Forum, but did not see this little bug mentioned... I just added my 1,000th and 1,001st sources , but the "Source #" column in the "Master Source List" window displays both as source number "100" rather than "1000" and "1001"; the last digit is truncated. (Expanding the width of the field makes no difference.) The program needs to changed so that the entire the Source Number is displayed. (Ideally, the Source Numbers will be displayed right justified, as well - - which will mean that the Surety should be displayed right justified, too.) (FYI: I keep the sources in my file cabinet indexed by the source number that TMG assigns to them, so I hope this display bug is fixed soon.) What other ways are there to see the full "Source #"? Ignore the previous post. I closed TMG 6.09, then re-started the program. The entire Source number is appearing in the Master Source List window now. Earl

My TMG database is probably not unlike many users'... I have nearly one-thousand people with the same Surname and I have several hundred people with the same Given Names in one large project. When I want to select a person, I most often go to the Picklist of People. If the "Sort By" is set for "Surname" and I enter SMITH (or any common name in my database, for that matter), I get the first of a nearly one-thousand SMITHs. If the "Sort By" is set by "Given Name" and enter JOHN (or other common given name), I get the first of several hundred JOHNs. Whichever sort parameter I choose, I still must scroll through all of the SMITHs - or all of the JOHNs - to get who I want to pick. - - I realize that there are several ways to search for individuals in TMG - Project Explorer, et al. - and they work fine, but for me, they are a bit too time consuming. I want something faster. I would really like to be able to go directly to the first SMITH, JOHN (not SMITH, ABE or ABBOT, JOHN) on the Picklist of People screen and pick from the dozen or so JOHN SMITHs that would be in front of me... I propose creating TWO search fields on the Picklist of People screen - one for Surname (where I could enter SMITH) and one for Given Name (where I could enter JOHN) - with a button that would execute the search on command with a click. For me, this would be a big improvement. - - Perhaps this could be an option to the current style of search. I would like to see some comments by others about this proposal. Yes, this issue drives me crazy, as well. I generally handle this situation the same way as Viper2004, but I take the Morbius approach on some individuals. I dislike having to separately set-up - to use Morbius' example - Kingdom of Hawaii, Territory of Hawaii, and State of Hawaii, all to identify the same place. Although the narrative reports are correct, but my TMG statistical reports are useless unless I massage the figures in Excel. (My particular problems are European city name changes, "county" (département) name changes, as well as national changes: Duchy of Savoy, Kingdom of Sardinia, & France; and Lorraine region places - France and Germany. A "Master Place Name" linked to multiple "Also Known As Place Names" assigned to date ranges is the solution. Perhaps a bright programming wiz can address this complex issue in the future. Earl

The "Sort by: Primary Death Date" does not work with the Expanded Picklist. (I am running TMG 6.07.) All of the other "Sort by" types work fine. I don't remember having this problem in the past. Is there something I can do fix this, or is it a known bug? Thanks, Earl

Hmmmmmm.... It must have been a gremlin. I have no other explanation. I was waiting for the weekend to make time to explore a solution to the problem. However, now, two days later, The Sort by Primary Death Date is functioning fine again (as are all other Sort By options). FYI to Robin: The last thing I do before I backup and close TMG is the three File Maintenance steps: Reindex, Optimize, VFI - everyday, no exceptions. Since I did this twice after the glitch first appeared, I doubt it was the solution to the problem - but, who knows? TMG is running fine. I am happy. Thank you Robin and Virginia for your comments. No. I am saying that nothing happens. After I select "Sort by Primary Death Date", the names in my Expanded Pick List are sorted by Surname (if that is the way they were previously sorted). I could send a screen shot, but there is really nothing to see. Earl

The Probate tag is assigned to the "Burial" Tag Group. Frankly, this doesn't make sense to me at all. If anyone can explain and justify this Tag Group assignment, please add a reply. The Will tag is assigned to the "Other Event" Tag Group. It seems to me that the Probate tag belongs in the same group, and it should be changed in a future product update.

In some future version of TMG... When I add a new Tag, then add the Citation, and click on the binoculars to open the Master Source List window, the window opens to my Source # 1. I would prefer that the Master Source List window opens to the last source I selected for a citation, as it does when I go to the Menu Bar and select Tools > Master Source List. This would greatly improve the speed of data entry bacuse, generally, I need to add several Tags in succession that use the same source. Thanks for your consideration. Earl
