The current version is v8.08. You may want to update to that and see if the problem persists.
Virginia
That does not work for me.
I first attempted an update from within the program. The update process failed after removing the original program with a "Fatal Error". I could then not re-install the 8.04 version and had to resort to a System Restore (which for the first time actually worked as one would hope!)
I then downloaded the TMG UK 8.08 full installer - This failed with the following error:
"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
Will now have to do another System Restore to get back to 8.04. (This is beginning to feel like a new topic!)

Any thoughts on this strangeness?
My Exhibit Log Icon (camera) used to glow green when exhibits were present.
Since a fresh install to a new computer, the icon remains a plain grey even when images/exhibits are present. Not critical, but annoying!

I have a problem that I have seen a number of times on various message boards.
I'm currently getting some strange characters in my reports. I haven't had this problem before and I haven't changed Windows or TMG recently.
When making a pdf Pedigree Compressed or Descendant Indented Chart - The report shows <FA line TMG> at the beginning of each line output, and subsequent lines also have three adjacent upper-case "A's" with various accent marks (tildes, graves, umlauts, whatever) above them.
(TMG Gold v. 7.04.0000 with Windows XP Pro)
The most common fix seems to be an email of missing fonts which Virginia Blakelock has kindly sent to various users.
I have checked my font folder & do not have any of the "missing" fonts:
A Line TMG (Alinetmg.ttf)
HelvSB75 (helvsb75.TTF)
HelvSS75 (Helvss75.ttf)
Wholly genes LD (Wholly.ttf)
So I am assuming that I now need those fonts & rather than us all having to harrass Virginia, how about putting them in the "Other Downloads" section of the WhollyGenes website?
Thanks,
Mark
P.S. - But, if you are there, I would still like the fonts, Virginia : )

Many thanks Terry & Michael,
That is exactly what I needed.

I am trying to set up a filter for people who are born/baptised but with no known death or marriage.
I can set up the filter to find an empty field, but cannot persuade it to find data with an absent field.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,The issue is that for the Picklist you have the "Primary Names" option checked at the bottom. But there is no such option when using this filter in reports. Instead, you can check the four boxes in front of the "Name Group..." elements to make the filter pick up only the primary names.
I tried that Terry, but then I only get a result of 543 names.
There are over 240 surname spelling variations in my database, so to help indexing, all the entries have one of the 4 major "Name-Var" options. I really need a "Primary Name" checkbox on the first filter line (Surname).
Just realized that the above is the answer - Switched the first line from "Surname" to "Name Group / Surname" and that gave me a check-box.
Problem solved. Thanks Terry

One filter = One result in Picklist and a different one in Report.
All works well except for the fact that my "Orphan" filter gives 1295 names when using Expanded Picklist, and 2318 names when using the same filter within Report - List of People.
It seems that the Report version includes assumed "Married Names" whereas the Picklist does not (& that is, of course, the one I want).
Any thoughts?

Thanks Michael,
I came to the same conclusion and merged everything into one data set (unfortunately before I read your posting about the flags).
However, Terry's TMG tips has a very good tutorial on how to add the flags post-merge, so all turned out well.

Thanks for holding
A once every 3 years issue is going to be really tough to pin down.
I've been very well behaved with my data management over the past few years.
I always validate after every merge (usually twice) until I get zero errors. I do make daily backups, but it has to be a real disaster for those to be called upon - lose the day's work or repair the errors. Perhaps what I really need is a timed backup that works in the background.
I did resort to using a recent backup last time this happened, but when I made the same Merge / Validate manoeuvre, I found the same issue. Maybe something odd is occurring in the Data Set that may be dormant until the next Validate.
re: the multiple data sets
I have a one name study in the database, with a number of established lines. Different researchers are supplying the data in their particular area of interest and I find it much easier to manage if I keep these data sets separate. This does mean that my data has a lot more "Copy / Merge / Validate / Delete" activity than most, & perhaps that is part of the problem.
(The down side of the above is that each time I publish, I have to merge all the lines into a "Combo" line for Second Site to read.)
-
Well, it's 3 years later & exactly the same problem has occurred - complete loss of all primary tag designations, but only within one Data Set of twenty. This again occurred after a "Validate" that showed 1700+ errors (usually 4-30).
I still have no explanation, & no en masse method of fixing the issue, but have used TMG utilities to fix Births & Deaths. All others have to be corrected individually.

In almost all instances, restarting the program will result in a clean start. Very rarely, the .PJC file will be corrupted and will need to be repaired or replaced but that is a very unusual occurrence.I'm having no problems running the program but I must endure the "what do you want to do" window every time I start it up. If I check "don't show again" I get the error message the next time I start. So something must be afoul somewhere. If it's not in the .PJC file then I should be able to avoid this by upgrading?
Robin
The upgrade won't help.
I'm running v. 7.04 on Windows XP and get the "Structure version is missing" problem about once a week.
The good news is that it's always restarted without problems ...... (touches large amounts of wood)

Thanks Jim,
That fixed it.

Anyone else have this problem?
After updating to UK Gold v.7.03 - 'Add Person' on all Data Sets (except Dataset 1:) shows incorrect fields.
Also Data Set number is not showing in ID field (e.g 18:456 shows as 456)

Add Person
Name: as expected
Birth :
SHOULD BE: Date............................. IS: Date
SHOULD BE: Addressee.....................IS: Title
SHOULD BE: Detail ........................... IS: Prefix
SHOULD BE: Village/Area.................. IS: GivenName
SHOULD BE: Town/City......................IS: Pre Surname

SHOULD BE: Country...........................IS: Suffix
SHOULD BE: Postal.............................IS: OtherName
SHOULD BE: Phone...........................IS: SortSurname

Thanks John,
Unfortunately I have just finished editing manually. Your method might have helped, but all other events had to be toggled (census etc.,), so I would have had to find each individual anyway. The lack of a birth date actually made that easier on the picklist.
-
Mark,
Very strange. Can you think of anything you did that is unique to that dataset? Is this the only dataset that you have been doing merge with? And what was the source and nature of the merged data? This is very unusual and should not happen.the problem only affected one data setMany thanks for your time on this, Michael.
The really strange thing is that the affected dataset is one that is rarely edited and was not involved in any merge. It is an almost complete branch that was imported a few years ago. I have struggled to think of any different process that I used recently, but nothing comes to mind.
My process is that I have 19 datasets that contain individual trees of the family name. Another dataset contains all the 'lonesome' individuals, and one dataset called 'temp' that I use in the merging process.
I use Terry Riegel's recommended method of merging: Copy Focus Group to final Dataset / Merge / Move Focus Group to Dataset 'temp' / Delete Dataset 'temp'. Optimise & VFI.
I have done it this way for many years without a problem. I think I will be throwing in a few more VFI/Optimise pairs after this issue!
Unfortunately the loss of the Birth Tags primary designation means that the 'sort by date functions' do not work, so I do have to fix it all. (BTW - EVERY primary tag disappeared within that one dataset, except the parent/child ones)
Mark
-
Hi Mark,Did that fix your Primary Tag designations?
Hi Michael,
No - I'm currently fixing them by hand - and I'm REALLY missing some kind of Macro function!
BTW - I do Backup, Validate & Optimise after every merge, but I hadn't thought of repeating the VFI.
Unfortunately, as the problem only affected one data set, I did not notice the issue until well after more data had been entered.
Mark

Previous comments have suggested that it is always wise to do an Optimize immediately following any VFI. Further, if a VFI ever gives errors it has always been stressed that you should do another VFI followed by Optimize pair until the VFI shows no errors. Previous explanations of the reason for this have been that fixing some errors now make it possible to identify further errors, so continued VFI/Optimize pairs are required. Thanks mjh,
I missed the posting re: Repeat VFI/Optimize pairs.
note to developers
If the above is 'best procedure', perhaps there should be a 'Suggest You Optimize now' warning after VFI ?

Primary Tag designations disappeared from one dataset (of 20) after running "Validate File Integrity"
In my experience "Validate File Integrity" will often find a few errors after a merge.
In this instance it came up with over 1000 errors and subsequently all Primary Tag designations (other than Parent/Child tags) disappeared from my Dataset 9:
All the data appears to be present but there is not an asterisk in sight.
I now have to reset all the tags on 677 names. See you next week, unless someone has a quick fix!

For the 'crash' when adding a new person, try unchecking 'Allow for Multiple Monitors' in Preferences > Other. You can still use multiple monitors. Sometimes when that is checked the Add Person screen will open up out of sight and the menus are dimmed. Pressing the Escape button will free up the menus and allow you to continue.Does TMG have permission in your anti-virus program to go online (required for its Message Manager)? Maybe that is somehow impacting Thunderbird?
Virginia
'Allow for Multiple Monitors' was already unchecked & TMG has full permissions to go online.

I wonder if there is some memory allocation issues with the program.
I occasionally get a crash when adding a new person and "Alt-Tab"-ing between programs.
I have another really weird issue. When TMG7 is open, my "send mail" fails from Thunderbird - it shows an Outgoing Mail Server problem. As soon as I close TMG, I am able to send email !!!

Good Job Elletee & Spouse,
Your fix worked for me, although it does seems a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut.
(BTW my overcrowded computer took about 45 minutes to make all the registry changes.)
On my system, no other installation program has ever needed any registry mods for a normal install. I wonder what the TMG7 installation is trying to do, that no others do?
Thanks again,
Mark
P.S. To reduce the worry - I would recommend others to back up the registry before making these changes.
(Run / Regedit / File / Export / (Export Range - select "All" )

Thanks Depke,
Unfortunately the Administrator in Normal mode "fix" did not work for my system.
For those that might make it work & have problems finding how to log on in Administrator mode (like me).
I found the following:
To Log on as Administrator in Normal Mode (assuming you remember the password!)
First you must ensure that the Administrator Account is enabled:
1 open Control Panel
2 open Administrative Tools
3 open Local Security Policy
4 expand Local Policies
5 click on Security Options
6 ensure that Accounts: Administrator account status is enabled
Then:
1 open Control Panel
2 open User Accounts
3 click Change the way users log on or log off
4 untick Use the Welcome Screen
5 click Apply Options
Shut Down and Re-Start
You will now be able to log on to Windows XP as Administrator in Normal Mode
Hopefully the above may work for some users.
I still have the "You do not have access to make the required system configuration modifications. Please rerun this installation from an administrators account." Error
(I'm running Windows XP Pro)

I have the same problem depke.
Have installed v7 without problem on my laptop, but cannot install on my main PC.
Error: "You do not have access to make the required system configuration modifications. Please rerun this installation from an administrators account."
So far I have tried the following with no luck:
Right-click installation program - "Run As" Administrator - Same error
Ran Regedit and modified all Wholly Genes permissions to "Full" access for all - Same error
Ignored "Rollback" and ran program - "Error in installing program" - (had to uninstall manually)
Created New User with administrator priviliges - Installed program - Same error
Log In as Administrator (Safe Mode) & installed - Same error
Am running out of "Fixes" & am officially bored with re-starts.
Any ideas anyone?
I have downloaded TMG V7 (tmg7setup.exe) to my desktop computer (Win'XP SP2). Running the setup, I agree to the licensing and accept all default folders and options, including to install for "All Users on this computer", and to create backups of the replaced files. The installation copies all files into a folder "The Master Genealogist V7" and then begins "Updating System Configuration" which fails with an error: "You do not have access to make the required system configuration modifications. Please rerun this installation from an administrators account.".I am the administrator on my home desktop computer and I am logged into my usual administrator account. I've done nothing different that when I installed TMG 5.0 and 6.0 with the similar default folder options for "all users on this computer".
I do have antivirus and spyware software - which I have disabled during this installation.
The error is persistent and recurs after I have restarted the computer - before running any other applications. The error remains the same with antivirus software loaded and without. I've also retried and attempted the installation for a "single user" instead of for "all users of the computer".
After the failure - I allow the installation program to uninstall and restore all original files. It does not clean-up and remove all of its folders - the error continues to happen when I attempt to re-install, even after manually cleaning up and removing the various folders. I do find references to TMG V7 in various registry settings - even after backing out all changes via the uninstall, but I've not resorted to cleaning up the registry entries manually.
Help? I've already purchaced my upgrade license to V7 but I can't get past the base install process.

OK - All a bit 2001, but it was sorted out with a full manual uninstall of 8.04 (as per pinned tips) & then an install of the downloaded UK package.
The green glow is back!
