Our family has regular family reunions and I've been providing large family tree posters. Out next family reunion is next summer and I was wondering if we could still get the large reports and charts printed.

Microsoft Money Adobe Photoshop CS2 Blender Also, Microsoft has announced that they are open sourcing the .Net Core libraries Perhaps I should have used the phrase 'On Occasion' instead of traditionally but this practice is more common with smaller companies.

I wanted to add that I'm a LONG time user of TMG and due to an abnormally long lull in my research I only found out quite recently that a new version was available and that Bob (Wholly Genes) was going to End of Life TMG.

Traditionally, when a much used application is retired and no longer available for purchase the company may either provide a fully functional unlocked version or open source the code base. I'd love to hear other user's thoughts on this.

MS SQL Server Express is free so I don't see that replacing the database as a licensing cost issue. I've been in the IT field for a bit over 20 years and have worked at several companies with aging products. The internal mentally is usually something like 'we use platform X because this is what we know, our product might not be as good if we switch over to Y' Wholly Genes has a GREAT product but the lack of Unicode support is going to hurt TMG more and more, as long as they keep quiet about their roadmap. It's only been pretty recent that Unicode has become an issue for me but there could be a time in the near future where Unicode support is the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Running TMG v7 via Parallels in a Mac
cob666 replied to Leslie1899's topic in Older Products and Versions
I'm running TMG v7 on my MacBook Pro (Lion) on a Win7 VM under Parallels with no problems. I was wondering why the OP was running some pretty old software until I realized that the post is from 2009. Some of the software was old in 2009 but what can you do. -
TMG v.8 is here! At Charleston NGS

I develop software primarily for Windows but have been venturing into iOS development which requires me to use a Mac. Not wanting to lug around two computers I've been using a Macbook Pro as my primary machine for a little over a month with Parallels running so I have access to my Windows development tools. TMG runs flawlessly on Parallels but I understand it doesn't really solve the Linux issues. Slightly off-topic here but I've been noticing that most of the software I've been running on Windows that I've found OSX ports of, it seems that the application is less functional than the Windows counterpart. Functionality has been removed to maintain that 'pretty' look that a lot of Mac applications have. I'm not saying the Wholly Genes would do that but TMG is great specifically BECAUSE it has so much additional functionality that is lacking in many other genealogy packages. My $0.02 -
Using my TMG records on a tablet PC
cob666 replied to hilltop's topic in Older Products and Versions
Until last year I had a real Tablet PC that ran TMG fine and this was great for visiting relatives and scouring through church records. But, you are talking about an iPad which isn't a tablet PC. I have an iPhone and use GedView which seems pretty good for a reference tool. Apparently you can edit and upload changes but I haven't been brave enough to try it. The only drawback is that you have to export your database to GEDCOM and copy it over to your iPad. -

Is there a release date yet for V8? -

It isn't so much the time required to rewrite the database engine, I would think that if the back end is Foxpro then it's quite feasible that Visual Foxpro is being used for the UI, if this is the case then it really would entail an entire rewrite of the entire application to move away from the Foxpro back end. -

I'm pretty sure that I heard that V7 would be the last version to run on the Foxpro platform and this was BEFORE V7 even came out. Seems that what I remember was either not official or not feasible. -

I'm not sure where I read it, or how long ago but I thought that TMG was moving away from FoxPro with V8. The odds are pretty good that I will still upgrade to V8 as I've been using TMG for over 10 years but Microsoft has announced that support for FoxPro will end in 2015.
