    Hi, Daryl,

     

    instead of using TMG's feature "Check for an update" may be you could try this:

     

    Go directly to the Upgrade Center of Wholly Genes Inc. at http://www.whollygenes.com/Merchant2/merch...Screen=UPGRADES

    Scroll down at page until you come to the section "The Master Genealogist -- Gold UK Edition".

    Then download the patch for UK versions v6.00.000-v6.10.000 and save it e.g. on your desktop.

     

    After the download completed move / copy that patch to your main TMG folder (where TMG is installed) ... then double-click to execute it from there.

     

    According to the "help>about" button, my programme is Gold UK Edition, v6.07.00. When I downloaded and tried to run the update I received an error message, "This patch file is for the U.K. Edition of TMG and is not appropriate for your installation. Please choose "Check for an update from TMG help menu...etc"." Which, of course, is what I did in the first place before I received the message!

    Hi, Dave,

     

    I would change the setting under Tag Type Definition "Other" for GEDCOM export as: ...... to Tag: NOTE

     

    Then you should be able to include the information for those custom tags into a GEDCOM file.

     

     

     

    The problem is that when exporting to Gedcom (or rather to Family Tree Maker) this info, neither dates nor places, is carried over, this despite the fact that in the Tag Type List the abbreviation for this tag is Breg and grouped under Birth. The Tag Type Definition gives GEDCOM export as 1 EVEN and 2 TYPE Birth Reg.

    Thanks Vera,

     

    It is indeed the "Afstamming inspringende kaart" with the option "Partners" checked. Now at least I know it is not possible and don't have to look futher into it. I've always been doing it the way you propose (manually edit in word), but thought it would be possible to have it right immediately and to generate the report in PDF format. So, now I know the answer is: NO. Many thanks

    If I make a non-narrative descendants charts (I hope it is called that way in English / it's the one with just Birth, marriage, deat and burrial tags), I always get a structure like this:

    you're talking about the Descendant Indented Chart (Dutch: Afstamming inspringende kaart), right?

     

    If I add one generation in the options, I get the husbands and wifes, but also their children.

     

    If so **to add a generation** means to add the children because only those belong to the next generation - not the spouses (BTW: they are not related in the original sense).

     

    Besides adding the children only TMG additionally offers to include the spouses as well if you make use of this option under Report > Descendant Indented Chart > Options > Miscellaneous.. section Other > checkbox "Spouses" (Dutch: Rapport > Afstamming inspringende kaart > Opties > Diversen > Ander... Partners)

     

    Is it possible to have the initial structure, including the children' s husband or wife, but without their children?

     

    So the answer is: NO not out of the box.

    If you want such a report you will have to save the report i.e. as a Word file and then manually edited it in Word.

    Thank you for your detailed help and sorry that I haven't answer until now! (I'll try to answer in english although german would be easier for me.)

    I think the idea with the memo-field could be a first step to solve my problem. Thank you for that help!

    But I'm thinking "one step further": how to create a report with the list of all cities - including the older names too!?

    I think about a link to footnote, source (or some thing like this), where the history of a city-name including a link to the coat of arms, a map, a description of the city could be explained. This wouldn't be boring for a reading even for a researcher because it's at the end of a book and only for those how really would like to know more about ist. On the other hand it would be more difficult for a researcher to search in old documents and compare it with new ones to find the city-name of today or another language. Maybe the MPL should use the LatLong-Field as a key to identify a place on earth. That could maybe realize a Link to maps, Coats of arms etc. (i.e. in an exhibition).

    I'm searching for a solution in TMG and can't find anything about it in the Newsgroups:

    In the Data of my work with about 2.400 family-members are some names of cities, that have been change several times. For example: "Ost-Berlin" and "West-Berlin" are now only "Berlin". Most of these cities have been renamed because of political reasons or wars. (Another example may be a name in Polish, in german and the translation in english.)

    Now my problem:

    I've the old names of the cities and would like to hold the names in the records of my database because they are all written in my sources. How can I hold the actual names of the cities simultaniously to the old names.

     

    When one records an event for a person (i.e. Birth) one should use the Place Part fields on that Tag Entry Screen for that specific event to record the original place where the event occurred corresponding to the source / document for that event.

     

    And if the name for those different place parts changed over time then why not make use the Memo field to i.e. record something like: "Heutige Ortsbezeichnung: XYZ" or "Heutiger Strassenname: XYZ".

    To show the content of the Memo field in a report it might additionally be necessary to modify the default sentence structure used for that tag by adding the "M" variable like . Put that variable in conditional brackets "" so that it is only shown in case there's content in that field.

     

    Until now I didn't find a possibility to write all names for one City in a usefull way for reports.

     

    Could you please give us an example how that should look like ....... write all names for one city.....?

    Are you perhaps thinking of something like: Examplecity (1880), East-Examplecity (1900 - 1920), West-Examplecity (1921 - 1945), Examplecity (since 1946)?

    And if so where would you like to show something like this in a report in order not to blow up the report unnessacarily and to make it somewhat boring for the reader?

    From time to time I run into the same and wonder why the TOC isn't shown or why I get that error message. And every time that happens to me I begin to remember..... well wasn't there that little tiny box you have to check.... and yes > Problem solved. ;)

    Can anyone tell me what happens to the table of contents (when chosen) in a Descendant Indented Narrative report when sent to Word? It does not appear 'naturally' as the Bibliography and Endnotes do and when I ask Word to create one, whether I pre-select the text of not, it tells me that no table of contents entries were found.

     

    Am I doing something wrong or is there a bug?

    when you have the Descendant Indented Narrative report opened in Word for Windows click on Insert > Reference > Index and Tables...

     

    from the "Index and Tables" screen go to the tab "Table of Contents" (TOC) and click in the lower right on the "Options..." button

     

    another sub-window opens "Table of Contents Options" and on the lower left please check the box "Table entry fields" and then say OK to all screens.

     

    Now the TOC should appear in your word document.

     

    (If you use a different word processor then the way to make the Table of contents appear here may differ from this description. It's word processor specific process.)

    As a confirmed user of multiple data sets in my main project, I wish I could include Data Set ID as a column in List reports. You can do this in List of People, but not other List reports.

    for the vast majority of List of.... reports you should be able to get what you desire. Although not always as a separate column.....

     

    List of Citations > Options > Names > check "show data set ID"

    List of Events > Options > Output Columns > Prin1 ID and/or Prin2 ID

    List of Names > Options > Output Columns > Data Set ID

    List of People > Options > Output Columns > Data Set ID

    List of Repositories > Options > General > Names > check "show data set ID"

    List of Sources > Options > General > check "show data set ID"

    List of Tasks > Options > Names > check "show data set ID"

    List of Witnesses > Options > Output Columns > Prin1 ID and/or Prin2 ID

    Hi, Mike,

     

    tried to replicate what you see by exactly following the sequence of steps you provided (tested with TMG's sample project as well as my working project and my test project) but everything works just fine for me. No screwed up Endnotes in the Individual Narrative Report. :huh:

     

    Have I missed anything?

    Do you get the same effect for the Sample Project?

    Are you able to provide an example of such an "unwanted" Endnotes report?

    It is possible to FILTER for occupation, but not OUTPUT it.

    may be you want to give this a try and see whether it suits your needs.

     

    You are able to filter i.e. the Project Explorer for names of people in your project which have an Occupation tag assigned.

     

    Open the Project Explorer and click on the button "Filter the Project Explorer".

    On the screen "Filter the Project Explorer" create i.e. a filter like this

     

    Field: Occupation....

    Subfield: Memo

    Operator: Is not empty

    Connect: OR

    Field: Occupation...

    Subfield: Any Place Field

    Operator: Is not empty

     

    Check "Both"

     

    Then say OK.

    Does TMG write the backup location to your project backup?

     

    Hi, Neil,

     

    if I am not totally wrong here I would say YES it does.

     

    You might want to check it as follows:

    The backup file originally has the file extension ".sqz" and it's a compressed - say Ziped - file.

    Temporarily rename it to "xxx_.zip" and when you double click on this file i.e. WinZip will show you all those different files contained in the backup.

    Part of that "file list" you'll find a file named "xxx_.PJC" copy that file i.e. to your desktop and just open it with a texteditor only!!

    Here you'll find a section [Advanced] and within this section there's an entry "BackupsDirectory=xxx" which shows the backup path as set in TMG's preferences under Current project options > Advanced.

     

    And please don't forget to rename the zip-file back to "xxx_.sqz". ;)

    I'm new to TMG and am busy loading the results of my research into the program (I'm using the Gold UK Version 6.09.000). Through inexperience I have been entering places people lived at, as Tag Type "Address" rather than Tag Type "Residence". I want to change the numerous tags I have already entered under "Address" to "Residence" but cannot seem to edit the Tag Type.

     

    In the Tag Entry screen, I have tried pressing the "Tag Type" button. This brings up the Tag Type List box but for those tags labelled as Address, the only option showing on this Tag Type List is "Address" and thus I cannot change it. For all other events, I can change Tag Type via this method very easily.

     

    Any ideas why the problem with "Address". Any suggestions to fix / workaround the issue?

    Hi, Phil,

     

    pressing the tag type button on Tag Entry screen won't work because the following list only shows Tag Types which belong to the same group of tags in this case the Address group. The Tag "Residence" belongs to the Tag Type group "Other events" and so won't show up in that list.

     

    To do what you want you might use John Cardinal's TMG Utility. It has a feature called "Change Event Type" (Functions > Events > Change Event Type) and here you choose as "From event type" Address and as "To event type" Residence to suit your needs.

    Please make sure you have a working and current backup of your project before you start using TMG Utility.

    I have now found the immediate cause of the difference. On the first run of the report after loading TMG the report is printed correctly, on the second run the report starts with the first tag. Close TMG and start again and the report is fine.

     

    Could some kind vermin exterminator please stamp on this bug?

    which version of TMG are you using?

     

    And you say it is repeatable on a permanent basis, right?

    Did you run TMG's maintenance tools recently (Validate File Integrity until no errors are reported AND Optimize)? If not I would kindly suggest to do that.

    Does that make any kind of difference to what you are seeing?

     

    To work on your issue a backup of your **pure** project (without any exhibits or other customizations!!) would probably be needed. Currently I am also not able to reproduce this.

    Hi, Dennis,

     

    to create a New Project from a Focus Group please use the Secondary Output option for the report type List of People.

     

    Go to

    Report > List of... > People

    On the Report Definition Screen for the List of People report check "Focus Group" as Subject of the report.

    And from the drop-down list on it's right select the Focus Group you want to use.

     

    Then click on "Options...." on the Report Definition Screen.

    On "Report Options" go to the tab "Secondary Output"

    Check "Create New Project" and select a path and give it a name etc.

    Check "Suppress output to screen, file, and printer"

    Next click on OK

     

    Now back on Report Definition Screen click on "Print & Save".

    A very global and general suggestion just in case you have not already tried it....

     

    i. e. if you are using WIN XP as OS....

     

    On your Desktop click on Start > My Computer

    select your Hard Disk Drive i. e. "C:"

    then click on "Search"

     

    a sub-window appears "Search by any or all of the criteria below."

     

    in the line "All or part of the file name:" type in PDF

    then click on "Search"

     

    That searches for all PDF files on your harddisk "C" in this example.

    After the search is finished you get a corresponding list of PDF files including the path name.

    Latest news!

     

    Two users were able to verify on a repeatable basis that the following sequence fixes the situation.

     

    Workaround (looks a bit strange I know but it worked :P ) :

    Go to File > Maintenance,

    1. Run Validate File Integrity until no errors are reported

    2. Run Optimize

    3. Do NOT close TMG

     

    Go to any person already existing in your project / dataset.

     

    Add a new Tag

    1. In memo field hold down the key M (or any other character key) at least until you have 3 lines of "m's".

    2. Select the "mmms", copy them, now paste them into the memo field to give you twice as many "mms".

    3. type a year only!! (i. e. 1665) in the date field above.

     

    Effect:

    Any additional work -whatever it is- while still being in the same TMG session works like a charm again .... say the automatically popping-up Exhibit log is gone!

     

    This "fixes" the situation for a single TMG session only. Upon each new start of TMG you have to work through that sequence again.

     

    But anyway you're back to normal business, right? :clap:

     

    Comment:

    So the trick here apparently seems to be how much text is entered or pasted into the memo field.

    If they only used a few characters it didn't work.

    2nd Update!

     

    Another user just reported a possible workaround which seemed to have worked for her.

    I just checked again and after I pasted info in the Memo section of a Marriage and then tried to add a date again and was able to enter the date with NO Exhibit log popping up.

    I have no idea if pasting a lot of data in the memo, triggered the fix.

    When I try to enter information into the memo box it enters as double line spacing.

    do you enter the information by typing text on your keyboard or do you enter it i. e. by using "copy and paste" from another "source" say a text document, word document or what so ever?

    My layout does not have the Project Explorer in it, but I tried it with what you said and I am experiencing the same problem you mentioned.

     

    I guess I need to clarify / correct my previous reply a little bit regarding this (unwanted) effect because it might be misleading:

     

    The basic is that Project Explorer and Picklists share the same filters.

     

    But an existing / applied Picklist filter should when you close the program not trigger the prompt: "....whether you would like to restore the filter...." for the Project Explorer upon next start of the program.

    I use the Picklist of people a lot when I go through church records on microfilm (i.e. i use it to filter out everyone born within a certain date range in a certain place). However, when you close down the program and restart it, then open the Picklist of People again you get the following message: "Would you like to restore the filter which was active when this project was last used (C:\Nordberg\Database\CONFIRMATIONS DATE RANGE.flp)?". If I click Yes on this dialog the filtering engine goes through the filtering process and says that it found 20 people like it should, but when the Piclist is displayed it still shows everyone like no filter was applied. Is this right? As it is now, I have to go back in, re-load the filter definition from disk and reapply it everytime I open the program to continue research where I left off.

     

    Not a big deal, just wondering if this is a known bug or if I am doing something wrong.

    with some fine but important other nuance I am able to replicate what you see and I will report it.

     

    So what are "my" differences to your description:

     

    - the first one is that when I apply a filter (which I previously saved or not doesn't make a difference) to an expanded picklist, then close the picklist and re-open the picklist later again while still being in the same TMG session the filter is still applied to the picklist .... say still active.

    But when I close the program .... then restart it .... i. e. open the same project I used before .... then open the picklist ..... the picklist always comes up totally unfiltered.

    I may be wrong but I don't think that has ever been different.

     

    - and the second one is (and I guess you don't see it because when you open a project within TMG your layout doesn't show the Project Explorer, right?) that I am able to reproduce what you say ....

    but upon TMG start and reopening the last project used and saying "Yes" to that message - the filter is now applied to the Project Explorer instead which definitely shouldn't be the case.
