In Person View, the Event "Type" column title is stuck on "Filtered" regardless of which project I open (even if I create a new project from scratch).

 

But I'm not filtering the events!

 

I can filter the Event Tags and it works, but if I then select Edit | Clear Tag Filter, the column title still shows "Filtered".

 

I can only assume that something in the global "Program Options" is causing this. But I can see nothing that should do this, nor does there seem to be any help in the Help.

May be you're working in Beginners Mode.

So first thing to check: File > Preferences > Program Options > Data Entry.

On the right side in the section: Data Entry Mode you see two options.... Beginner (the default) AND Advanced

As long as "Beginner" is selected the title of Type column will always say in red "Filtered".

In case you're already working in Advanced Data Entry Mode please position the mouse cursor on any event in the Type column, right-click and make sure that no filter option in middle of the shown sub-window is checked. In case any of them is checked please uncheck it.

OK, now I got it.

But I wouldn't change LIVING to N in your case.

What you want to accomplish for me is a typical situation to use a custom flag within TMG - i.e. RELEASED with the values N, J, ?

For living people who don't object to have their data included i.e. in reports set the flag to J (meaning: data can be released / published)

When you run a report use a filtered group of people for that report - setting the filter condition i.e. to LIVING = N + RELEASED = J

At least in Journal report there is a feature to "Suppress Details for Living People". It is at least polite to do so but in some countries it is demanded by the law.

 

However, then there is people who would like to see their info included in web pages. And have given even written permission to do so.

 

What to tell to them? Today you try to tell then politely "wait till you are dead".

 

I have not found a way to solve this, maybe someone can help.

 

One possibility would be to have a system flag like "Release living info". If that is set to Yes, info would be released wether or not "Suppress Details for Living People is selected". Then releasing info could be controlled by person.

An other possibility would do in per tag, one way or an other.

 

In any case it will need software change in TMG.

as you said "Suppress Details for Living People" is an OPTION which might be checked ==> to suppress details for people still living OR as long as being unchecked ==> to show even details for people being still alive.

So simply uncheck it and you will get the details for people being still alive at the time you run the report.

In the details window and the detailed report, for events like Marriage, Son, Daughter, you can see the name and ID of the concerned person, also place, comment etc.

 

I would also like to see the life-span of the concerned persons (like it is done in the project explorer). Often, this would give a much better impression.

 

An example from my researches:

 

A couple has got 12 children within 14 years. With the exception of one, all had died before their mother when giving birth the twelfth time. Most of the children died when they were less than three years old.

When the lifespans are shown, you get a very good idea of the situation.

which 'detailed report'? You're referring to the lower part of the details window, right?

Why not simply add the 'Children' window to your layout? From this you can see at one glance Birth and Death of the children... (and even more than that).

I would like to have a dropdownlist by enter place names. This would avoid multiple entries in the Master Place List because of typing errors. I entered german cities with City, State, Country and even LatLong (to make unique). And so you have to insert all fields for every person for every event. That's unpleasant . Or do I something wrong?

 

Better: AddOn like Gazetter in Map My Family Tree or Microsoft Virtual Earth in Family Tree Maker 2008 (Beta). This would be great!!

I feel foolish for even asking this because I am sure the answer is quite obvious, but is there a way to remove the spouses of descendants from a Descendant Chart. I am trying to create a Descendant Chart with just descendants who are blood relatives of a common ancestor couple.

for the Descendant Indented Chart go to Report Options > Miscellaneous and in the "Other" section uncheck "Spouses" and "Unknown spouses".

Hope this is the report type you want to use.

You never set the sort order in any column to '0'. If you want no sort on a given column and some value is already entered, you simply delete that value.

 

When I tested John's issue, I deleted the default value for column 1 before entering the sort order that he specified for the other columns.

As you probably already noticed I already corrected my fault.

I can't set the sort to 0 - I can enter it but it resets to blank when I exit the field.

I should have said: go to the Sort Order for the first line = ID Number and press Delete so that the field is empty.

I also get correct sorting results when I run the LOP report with your report definition.

After that I did a few experiments and was able to reproduce the incorrect (or better say: unwanted) sorting result you reported.

(Please notice the sequence of ID numbers. That's the key.... they are correctly sorted in ascending order.)

To replicate the issue: go to Report > List of... > People

On Report Definition Screen say Filtered Group "births 1770 - 1779"

Click on Options

On the tab Output Columns (Report Options screen) in the Sort Order column for line 1 (ID number) leave TMG's default / standard setting = 1 in place

... then set the sort order for line 2 also to 1 / for line 3 to 2 / for line 4 to 3 (I guess that is what you are doing, right?)

now the content of this window looks like this

Next click on OK on Report Options screen.

On Report Definition Screen say Print & Save (doesn't matter whether you print to Screen or File) and you end up with the wrong sort order as listed above.

To get a correct sorting result you need to set the value in the Sort Order column for line 1 (ID number) to 0 (zero)!!

As long as you don't do that TMG will always sort (i.e. identical Given names / Surnames) according to the ID number and since on the web-site the ID number isn't shown that wasn't obvious immediately in case of "John Hewison's data".

So are you saying that prior to adding that very last filter condition "Is a descendant of [?]" everything ran just fine?

What are the exact filter conditions you use?

Last time you had such errors you told me -in case I remember it correctly- that they seemed to have healed themselves after a couple of reboots and running TMG's maintenance tools. Did that perhaps also help here?

And after reviewing your former issues I noticed that one more time your custom WWI tag seems to be involved, right?

May be something is wrong with it? Or something went wrong upon creating this custom tag?

There is an option somewhere that alerts you to the opposite, ie a new or mispelt surname has just been entered, so absence of this means you have got at least one person with this surname

This "option" is under File > Preferences > Options > Program Options > Warnings.

Here you may want to check "Warn when surname does not exist".

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I installed Second Site last week and a few things are not going the way they should:

 

1) For each person listed on the generated website, the father and mother are listed as well. However, the labels for both father and mother say "mother-bio" (in fact "moeder-bio" in dutch). When I double-click on father and mother in TMG, I have both "father-bio" and "mother-bio". So, any idea why the "father-bio" is translated into "mother-bio"?

 

2) The list of tags displayed in Second Site has other names than in TMG. In TMG I have the standard tags translated in Dutch (comes with my Dutch version), but in SS all labels in the list are English and all tags in a certain group (e.g. marriage) are translated into the same name ending with 1, 2,... (e.g. marriage1, marriage2, marriage3,...), which makes it very difficult to select which tags to display. Any idea of other Dutch (or foreign) customers having the same problem?

when you start Second Site and say File > New and after giving it a name...

....in the following sub-window "Set Default Values" have you set it to use "Dutch-Standard" instead of "English-Standard"?

I have another related question as well. Those that show GEDCOM, how can I change it back to Address? If I click 'tag type' in the entry, Address isn't listed.

GEDCOM and i.e. Address are in different "Tag Groups" ==> Address in Address and GEDCOM in Other Events - so you won't see both listed when you click on the Tag type button from Tag Entry screen.

John Cardinal's TMG Utility program "normally" does such things but in your special case please be very, very careful if you would like to test it because not only Address tags are affected but some others as well. So i.e. saying "change GEDCOM tag to Address tag" would only mix up your data even more than they already are.

I am preparing a journal report where a person is not married but has children. I have elected "custom" format and on the miscellaneous tab have removed the check mark from the "include missing spouse" format item. The phrase "and an unknown spouse" still appears on the report. It appears whether or not the "include missing spouse" block is checked. How can I set up the report where there is no reference to this particular person's spouse (or lack thereof)?

I've tested this back and forth but I don't get that phrase "and an unknown spouse".

So my suggestion would be that this has nothing to do with the checked or unchecked "include missing spouse" check box but may be a surety issue.

On the General tab of Report Options please try to check / activate: Threshold 0 (zero) and Include blank surety and see whether that helps.

Thanks for the two files you provided.

I carefully checked them (entry by entry) and they are also totally OK.

On some of my entries, it's almost as if the software pulled out memo's from certain tags (birth for example) and address tags and made them their own GEDCOM tags. Maybe I'm entering them in wrong, but I don't see how.

That is really very strange and obscure. I've never seen this happen before.

I would like to look at your project and need a backup of a part of it. For details how to do that please see my email sent directly to you.

Later: Oops! The fact that English is shown does not indicate that you have a custom language named 'English', rather it indicates that you did not choose to install the Language option when you installed TMG. The language option is not necessary if you don't plan to use other languages, and I apologize for misinterpreting what appeared in your screenshots.

You're using a custom language, right?

So where do you see the "strange" GEDCOM label instead of i.e. "Address"?

Only the Tag Entry screen (as visible from the previous screenshot you already provided), on the Details screen for a person as well and / or anywhere else?

When you go to the folder where your project is stored you'll find a table named xxx_t.dbf and another table named xxx_t.fpt.

Please just make a copy of these two tables (nothing else please) and sent them to me - Click here!

just in case running maintenance tools again doesn't help... could you then please post the following two screenshots of the Tag Type Definition screen (Tools > Master Tag Type List > highlight "wrong labeled" tag i.e. Address > click "Edit")

While re-reading your original post I would like to verify something which might be the reason for this behavior.

You said you previously used TMG's U.S. version and probably got your personal license number for that U.S. version, right?

Then you said after a computer re-format you installed the TMG U.K. version.... did you use the US version license key to unlock the UK version?

If so I would think (but no doubt I might be wrong here) that this didn't work OK and now you are unable to upgrade the UK version.

In that case I don't see any other chance than to contact Wholly Genes support directly for help.
