I recently started reviewing the role sentences I had previously created for the census tag and I see I have not been consistent. Some role sentences use the [W] variable while others use the [R:xxx] variable. It has been some time since I created the roles so I do not remember if a had a reason (valid or otherwise) for the dissimilar sentences. I have gone through the help file but am unable to see a clear distinction between the two uses. Is it merely a matter of preference or are there “rules” that help determine when one should, or at least it would be preferable, to use one or the other, [W] or [R:xxx]? Thanks. Tom

Michael - - I did some testing of sentences and [WO] works well in some circumstances. As to census sentence structure the children [W] came out fine on the Principal narrative report, but each child had the surname repeated for each one. I don't see it in help so I assume it can't be done but can [WO] be restricted to given name only? Like [WOF]? Tom

Thoughts on where to put a sentence showing where in the cemetery the burial took place, e.g., Section, Lot number, grave number etc. In the Tag? In the Source? In both the Tag and Source? Tom

My grandmother had 2 stepsisters (same mother, different fathers). The TMG Relationship Calculator shows them as sisters (and this of course carries over to SS3). Am I doing something wrong or does TMG not show step sibling relationships? Could not find anything on this forum or on the mailing archives. Tom Malek

I would then assume that the same answer would apply to 2 men who had the same mother but different fathers - they would be brothers? Tom In the USA, a step-sister relationship is one through adoption or a remarriage without the close biological sister relationship. If females have the same mother, they are sisters. The same if they have the same father but different mothers, they are sisters. One could call them half-sisters, but not step-sisters. An example of a step-sister relation, if a woman with a daughter by her previous marriage, married a man with a daughter by his previous marriage, those daughters would be step-sisters. Another example, if a couple with a daughter adopts another girl, then those two girls are step-sisters. Best wishes,

Have been trying to enter letters with diacritical marks into tags (Name, etc). Have used the character map but every time I copy and paste the letter I get the question mark (?) as the entry. Any suggestions? Tom

Thanks Vera Tom Tom, looks like you are trying to use characters which would only be supported (say correctly displayed) in case TMG would support Unicode. That however is not the case - unfortunately.

Received a pedigree chart attached to an email. Which is the source - the email or the attached pedigree chart? Who/where is the repository - the sender, or my computer where the email is stored, or my file cabinet where I store a copy of the printed pedigree chart?

Thanks Terry, Tom Which did you take the data from? :-) If you want to mention the email in the provenance you can. Yes. :-) I think any are all reasonable choices. If it was from a public archive I'd tend to say that because others can find it there.

I am creating a new Place Style. I want to use "in" City. How do I add "in" and get rid of "at"? Tom

Thanks Teresa - have tried this numerous times, both before and after your reply, as follows: <[Addressee], ><[Detail], >in <[City], ><[County], ><[state], >. But I keep getting the narrative report outputting "at in City". The "at" is still there, preceding the "is". Interestingly, when I use the new Place Style with a tag, the tag preview sentence does not have the "at". I obviously am doing something wrong. Teresa - forgot to mention that when I add the "in" to the template I get the message "The output template includes text that is not within square brackets [like this] to designate it as a field label. Are you sure that you want to save this template?". I check Yes and the new Place Style is created. Tom Tom, Yes, that's fine. It's just making you aware of the issue. I have used these since version 5.x and with SS and you are okay. Not sure why you are getting the At. Have you turned off prepositions in the report options? That's what was needed. Thanks. Tom

You're doing nothing wrong. The preposition "at" you're seeing comes from the Report Options. While being on the Report Definition Screen > click on Options... > go to the tab "Places" > and in the section "Preposition" check "(blank)" instead of "At" or "In". That should do it. Thanks Vera.
