  1. So, in my infinite wisdom of blasting through borrowed sources (books, et al), I seemed to have created a portability traffic jam. When I switched [to TMG 6], I recorded Occupational titles (like Reverend and Docter), Military ranks (seargeant, Captain, etc) and Political titles (Governor, Sheriff, etc.) in the title tag of the name-var window. It was faster, at the time to hit CTRL+V and enter it there, with at least a starting date date, which allowed me more research time with borrowed books (a 20 second savings per record, over thousands of entires, really adds up, when you are on "loaner" time). But now, as I try to move the data bwtween apps (the reasons are irrevelant here), the title tag seems to get stripped from my ged exports. So now, with my data-O.C.D. kicking in, I would like to move all "Title" entries to Occupation Tags. If it was 100 or less entries, I would trudge through and manually change it all. But we are talking thousands of entries. I tried looking into TMG-Utility, but it does not seem to offer what I seek (even in a dirty transposition, as I have had to resort to for previous itches). Is there a clean, reliable way to do this, without resorting to installing postgresql and importing the dataset there, and editing with complicated queries, and then hoping tmg picks it up when reimpoting the data? Internally with TMG, externally with TMG-U (I have not found a reliable way), or another utility? thanks
  2. on a secondary note, it would also make my picklist (proj explorer) a lot shorter
  3. Vera Nagel: I see what you mean, and it turns out after some testing, my jam is not the ged export itself, but one of the other apps I am trying to use appears to not read the TITL tag in Ged's. It does read the OCCU tag though. If I only worked on one pc it would be kinda moot, but I work form at least 3 different systems, and a tablet. One license for tmg is all I can spare, TMG on a tablet is not easy to use and I have found a lightweigtht app for rough entries and source recording. I also do not want to spend the bulk of my free time, scrubbing datasets on export or import. True, all apps should fully support the GedCOM standard, but it's like asking (warning, techie speak) all Connected peripherials on a Domain to listen to AD and it's GPO's. So I want to normalize my data to be interchangeable between apps. Which means using OCCU in place of TITL. As my title says, an itch that (i feel) needs scratching. Michael Hannah: I will look into your suggestions, although, Narratives are not my end goals. i am more into core data vs. Book outputs or Ahnenfatels. Right now it is mostly collecting and cataloging information, occasionly outputting a tree or bracket chart. It is kinda difficult to explain my end goal completely, probably the way my mind works/perceives the output. I see what i want as a result of my work/research. I have learned to baby step through the progress, but from time to time, come across a snag in my method. Ancestors help me when I decide to add the image/graphics into my tree stuctures. Bayer/Excedrin stock will rise then. If there are any other inputs/ideas, keep them coming.
  4. So, I gave up on the old way of entering "place names" as surnames (OF Burgandy, D'Italia, etc). As I could not get a timly resolution to a reoccuring issue I had and/or a detail explanation of why so I can avoid it or fix myslef, I decided to remove a choke point. I split placename type Surnames in too preSurname and Surname fields, reapplied "sortSurname". this has made things run a bit smoother, but now have some new annoyances (v 8.04 and also in v 8.08 thinking the updates migth actually solve a problem). Say 2 people, Old Method surname D'Italia, are changed to the new convention of naming. So preSurname becomes D', and Surname (and sort) Become Italia. BUT, not some show in the explorer picklist eith (D') Italia, and some as Just Italia. henlooking at each individual, there primary name is displaying the saem as well, some /given/ D' Italia, some /given/ Italia. I looked and Given name length, and it seems not to be an issue. It happens to random De, D', Del, Of, Von, Le, L' surnamed incividuals. Second issues is, INferred names, how do I disable this. It was not a issue before, but as I get more granular with my data, and anal-retentive about it, it is now seriously messing up my Schema. I jilts my picklists, my sorting, and to some degree, my reporting and tools (like tthe one I used to change en masse the presurname splits). Anyone? I am here as it takes weeks to get a fix or answere sometimes form wg directly. I have stuck with TMG through all the heartaches, as it allows me control of most of my data. But as I seek more conformity and control, it is starting to frustrate mroe than it is helping. (Sorry if this sounds like an itch only I have need of scratching, but for such a robust and maleable application, it should be able to work within the confines of normal C.R.U.D. queries, as well as fancy built in strings). thanks for looking whether you canhelp or not SCR
  5. inferred names, and other inconsistencies

done and done before I started this mornings string of replies.
  6. inferred names, and other inconsistencies

I am just leaving it on advanced mode for now. Do not plan on using any of the features other than "viewing" the presurname in the project explorer list. It's more about consistency at this point. There is probably 80% of TMG I have not used, or am desirious of using. I only stay with it, as I can quickly (relatively) fix data, particularly placenames, for accuracy and consistency. thanks again
  7. inferred names, and other inconsistencies

after toying with it all my remaining wakeing hours, I did enable advanced mode, and changed all name styles to match, think that is the ticket, thanks. I may have experimented with it in my early days of tmg, not realizing I had some in a non-standard form, before reverting back to beginner mode (probably at the 6 to 7 switch). thanks again and now, off to test/tackle stability
  8. inferred names, and other inconsistencies

ideas, yes, solutions, we'll see. off to learn more abut the advance settings. I've been using tmg since v6, in "beginner" mode as I never needed anything else, and do not recall changing name styles. I just seek control, accuracy and consistentcy of my data. To put it another way, why install dual gtx cards in sli, with solid state Primaries, a velocioraptor (in raid 0) secondary serving up your page file and scratch disk, and an 8 bay NAS in Raid 5 if you are just surfing the web and postining on FB.
  9. inferred names, and other inconsistencies

thank you for your response, and please bear with me a moment, I have had one frustration after another over the past few months, and have resorted to work arounds to try and get stability back and consistent date in TMG. so exhibit a show on induvidual and how he appears in main project window, project explorer, and tag entry screens and exhibit b shows on possibly related individual and the same views notice a is shown in main window, primary name-var as Hugh Ii De Audley, and in the project explorer as (De) Audley, Hugh Ii notice b shows in the main window, primary name-var as Alice Sudley, and in project explorer as Audley, Alice But aside from different Given and SortGiven names, they have identical Presurname, surname, and sortsurname. Image sizes may be a bit large, but they clearly show my issue. And before anyone asks, i changed my data to presurname-surname format, instead of just a combined surname as I previously used, because I am 90% sure my previous crashing issues are due to TMG choking when it tries to match names as I add people. thanks again
  10. Entering Dates

I use the memo field on events as TMG does not support BC dates. It does not help sorting, but still shows.
  11. the Question: can this tmg 8 crash issue be resolved? the system: Win 7 Professional sp1 64bit, Intel 15 Quad core 2.8Ghz, 8GB DDR3, nVidia GTX-460, enough disk space to put the Library of Congress to shame, (well maybe not). the problem: TMG 8 Hangs, alot, especially if I add ac ouple (read, 2 or 3) people and basic events (BMD), or run a report, or refresh the "relationship" tag. I though by ditching 7 and going to 8, I would not have these issues anymore. 12. TMG8, you're leaving me hanging....

necro-post, I know, but I am back as the problem is back. Doffutt, is not my 'puter or one of my applicatins or services, as the response and fixed file (I had to send them my whole pjc set) I received last spring was accompanied by the following text from support "90% of the database files had an invalid flag which our in-house program fixed." Was never told which flag or table was the issue, just took it fro granted it was fixed, until it started rearing it's head again (the hanging issues) as I kick into my history season (did not play much summer/fall, life happens). If I can get a definitive answer and fix, I will post it. I email ed support again this morning, but am raching out to any DBA's, esp with vfp experience in regards to tmg, as to what to look for on my own. I am not a dba, but am certified/experienced in other MIS/NOC/IT foci. thanks
  13. TMG8, you're leaving me hanging....

    already done, thanks
  14. TMG8, you're leaving me hanging....

thanks, the driver update was the only system driver or os update that was listed as available. I ran it after a reboot, and tmg still hangs randomly. It was not actually updating during the crash. none of the thermal sensors on my mobo or case are triggered/abnormally high. the video card cooling fan, case fans, and cpu fans are clean and spinning at normal rpm (only time they kick into high rpm is when rendering textures in solidworks).
  15. TMG8, you're leaving me hanging....

Danke für den Vorschlag, but I cannot condone disabling Anti-virus software on any internet connected pc. I am aware of what vfp9 is, its history, and it's slotted "end of support" and end of development (officially). I have ran a copy of my database, after converting it (copies of the actual tables, not an export), under 2 flavors of sql, and can run CRUD's against it without issues, I am not a front end guy though. I do not want to reinvent the wheel. I would like the wheel to work as intended Does any one at Wholly Genes read this forum? Or any die-haed DBA's? Would love their take. **Also of note, TMG is the only standard spplication that has hung/crashed on this pc, since July 2011, through normal use. The O/S and hardware have been stable since Aug 8th, 2010 (assembly and installation date).
  16. TMG8, you're leaving me hanging....

well I was just reading virginia's and Michael's replies, and navigating up an ancestor line, and it hung again (still hung as I type this). As shown, app had only been running for 8 minutes. Task Manager show TMG8 only using 25% cpu and only 48MB of Memory, Captured a dump file, and here is the dump file (as viewed in MS Debugger): Microsoft ® Windows Debugger Version 6.12.0002.633 AMD64 Copyright © Microsoft Corporation. I am looking at some resources, programmatically, to try to "trap" what is making tmg unhappy, but in the end, Wholly Genes sold an app to me, not paid me to test/develop on it. Hopefully someone can resolve this, if not, a semi-long time TMG (v6+) user may fly the coup. Help me obi-wan kenobi, you're my only..... oh wait, wrong realm
  18. TMG 7 and Report hangs

ok, so this has been bugging for a while. here atre the details: Custom Flag "Checked" has values of Y or N, N is default. Report---> List of People---> Filtered Group Parameters: Checked;;Does not equal;Y;and (birth;# of citations;is greater than;1;or death;# of citatins;is greater than;1) END Options: Change Flag: Checked---> Y Suppress output to screen is checked So I run this report, it finds the matching criteria, and asks if I want to change the tag, I answere yes, and then asks to change the "last changed date", which I alway ssay no to (have since v6). It wiol change the tags, and then hangs, with no errors. let it run for 2 hours once. TMGshould be able to handle a DB with 11k plus names, no? thanks in advance for help. btw, this is on a very stable win xp pro system, updated, plenty of free hdd space, 4 gb ram nd 4gb pagefile, that handles solidworkswith no issues. So it is not my system. SD/SoCalRivethed
  19. export and import

ok, so I have two files/db's, one for me (3 years in the making), one for my wife (2 years in the making). I found a common (way, way back) ancestor. I export that ancestor from my tree, including his ancestors, as a GED, and import it into her tree. All the names that were imported are now broken up. i.e., titles are on there own name-Var line and the restof that entry is on a seperate name-Var line. I do not want to have to hand edit all of the entries back the way it was (100 plus entries at this initial step). what is causing this........ .. .. .... . . .?
  20. export and import

this problem did not get resolved, and I had to manulally correct all 100+ poor imports. I will looka t the lnk on terry's site, and maybe tet that method with a copies. thanks
  21. TMG 7 relations problem

ok I only have this issue with one person in my tree, but it is persistent. when relationships are applied and view, this one person shows up as a Nth Great Grand Aunt. I f I remove both her father and mother, and reapply relationship to root person, she correctly appears as Nth Great Grandmother. If I add one or both parents bacj inot the mix, and refresh relationships again, she reverts to being Great grand aunt. She has 3 of 5 siblings who are also technically direct blood, but not one of them exhibits this issue. Any suggestions?? thanks p.s., this happens with different installations, as I tried this on another system with the same version.
  22. TMG 7 relations problem

OK, I will try again, person of interest is a my 33rd great grandmother. Her parents are my 34th great grandparents, her son is my 32nd great granfather. through a direct line running up through her brother, who is my 31st ggfather, and her sister, being my 30th ggmother, makers their parents also my 32nd and 31st ggparents. Out of all the siblings, she is the only one that does not show up correctly (and yes, I find it odd that 3 sibliungs of the same generation are my direct line ancestors, but it happens if you go far enugh back.) given the 31st ggparents, makes her my 30th ggaunt. bUt I thought direct line to precedense <sp?> over directline siblings? or am I not explaining this right?
  23. I am not a coder or scriptor, but would like to customize my outputs in VCF. I found chart style I really like, but only place I have seen it is from the creator who wants to sell his charts to you. TMG exports one similar (Wheel chart I think it isicalled), but the text is all screwy. How do you correct the text alignment in the output of the "wheel" chart. Or do you have to manually edit them by hand?

Thanks Mike, but not what I am trying to accomplish happy t-day everybody!
  25. VCF and Custom charts

ok, I figured this much out, in the fan report, option button, chart style tab, int eh chart size section, the curved text generations, will rotate and curve the text for the specified number of generations (with no regard to box size in the outer sections). So that solves the one issue I had, now if only we could force custom chart designs/framework.
