  1. DNA, SS & TMG

I would be grateful for any hints on using the TMG DNA fingerprint facility, which I will be using in conjunction with Second Site. Other than the TMD help pages, are there any FAQ's or web sites I can view? Pat Dunbar
  2. [TMG]Relation Problem

Hello Paul & Svhous,' Many thanks for your kind assistance.. I used Go to File > Preferences > Current project > Other and click on the refresh button, and it worked. I have been using TMG since floppy disk days, and still have a lot to learn! Perhaps I'm getting too old for this game. Kind regards, Pat Dunbar
  3. [TMG]Relation Problem

For some time I have had on TMG a female 1st. cousin 1 time removed, her husband and their son.. Her husband is shown as no blood relationship. Their son, 2nd cousin. So far, so good. I have just added a daughter which I expected to be a second cousin but TMG records her as no blood relationship. I have checked that both son and daughter have the same parents. The Sibling screen is correct when switching Details, Person screen from son to daughter. I have restarted TMG and carried out maintenance but with no change to the above. I would welcome any comments. Pat Dunbar
  4. Missing msvcr71.dll

I'm using v9, English version. For some unknown reason I cannot load it due to a missing msvcr71.dll. A web search suggested registry problems. I have cleaned the registry. Searching c: drive I located a total of 14 copies of the missing .dll; none where connected to TMG. I tried to load my old v7 - I was surprised to receive the same error report. Help, please! Before I make matters worse, could someone please offer a guiding hand? Pat Dunbar
  5. Missing msvcr71.dll

Thanks for the assistance offered. It is comforting to know I have friends willing to help. Some time ago I carefully filed a copy of the installer (honest!) but yesterday I couldn't find it. So much for my filing system. Today I checked Terry's TMG Tips - and there I found The Future for TMG Users which included download links for both the UK and the US versions. In a very short time TMG was fixed using the 'Repair' button. So a special 'thank you' to Terry. Pat Dunbar
  6. Missing msvcr71.dll

Hello Bette, Thank goodness I'm not alone! Help, someone, please!
  7. I used Terry's Tips, 'Using Roles to Manage Multiple Marriages' and had it working, but now for some reason I have lost the word 'Married' from the list of children as shown below - The five known children of James1 Dunbar (1:15607) and Elizabeth Gillan (1:15606) were as follows: 2 i. Janet2 DUNBAR (1:55214), born 1773; William Hay Edinvail (1:55213). + 3 ii. William DUNBAR (1:55212), born say 1774; Jane Wright (1:55211). + 4 iii. Alexander DUNBAR (1:9994), born 10 Feb 1775 Dallas, Morayshire, Scotland; Margaret McIntosh (1:9993); Elizabeth Garrow (1:12137); died 12 May 1863 Yellowbog, Dallas, Morayshire, Scotland. + 5 iv. John DUNBAR (1:55145), born 3 Oct 1778 Dallas, Morayshire, Scotland. 6 v. David DUNBAR (1:7329), christened 3 Oct 1778 Dallas, Morayshire, Scotland. Could someone please help? Pat Dunbar
  8. Second Site reports ' Role Second/00006 not found for marriage person 6266' With TMG loaded and #6266 Person Page displayed, the marriage tag entry screen opens minus both Principal ID's. After a wait exceeding two seconds (measured with a stop-watch) Pricipal ID's appeared. On closing, then reopening the marriage tag it displayed ID's correctly. With TMG closed, reloading SS, making site gives the same fault. Opening TMG I ran Optimise, then VFI which reported no errors. #6266 Marriage tag opened correctly. TMG closed. Opening SS, Make Site reported the same error. With TMG reloaded, Principals ID's took over two seconds to display. Any help will be much appreciated. Pat Dunbar
  9. TMG Marriage Tag Causing Second Site Error

Terry - many thanks for the Language info. I appear to have found the reason for the error. My man #6266 had two marriages. One marriage was between two Principals, the other First and Bride, which gave 'Error Role Second 0006' Changing the marriages to First & Bride and Second & Bride gave two errors, 'First/0005' and 'Second/0006' (or vice-versa) Setting both marriages to Primary & Primary cleared the error. So I guess it must be a Role problem and until I'm a little wiser I stick with 'Principals' Many thanks for the help - and my apologies for wasting valuable time. Pat
  10. TMG Marriage Tag Causing Second Site Error

Terry, My error, sorry. I should have written both Site and Sentence Language set to English2. I have left Default to English (US) selected - if this is not correct please advise. I am doing further checks on the fault and will email results later. Kind regards, Pat
  11. TMG Marriage Tag Causing Second Site Error

Terry, I cannot find an FAQ for the problem - but I will have another look. In both TMG and SS the language is set to English2 I copied the tag, and, as I suspected, it ran like the original i.e. on first opening it loaded the Principals after a delay; after closing the Marriage tag, and then reopening it the Principals appeared almost immediately. I deleted the copy, shut down then reopened TMG. Then, using identical names and data, I typed in (no copy & pasting) a duplicate. When run this gave the same delay. I then deleted the citation; the fault was still there. I did more runs, each time deleting some of the data, but the fault persisted. Between runs I closed and reopened TMG. So I'm mystified. I have several separate family lines to upload to Second Site. Would it be sensible for me to ignore the problem for the time being, and load some more lines to see if I can reproduce the fault? We could then compare the two records. Regards, Pat
  12. TMG Marriage Tag Causing Second Site Error

Further to my earlier posting (repeated below), I'm using Second Site V.5 build 09, TMG 8 Gold UK V.8.08 Both on C: drive. HDD 78.5 GB used 833 GB free, RAM 4 GB Processor AMD Athlon II X2 250, 3.00 Ghz Second Site reports ' Role Second/00006 not found for marriage person 6266' With TMG loaded and #6266 Person Page displayed, the marriage tag entry screen opens minus both Principal ID's. Pat Dunbar
  13. TMG Not Responding

I have just tried to add a person and TMG greyed-out and the error 'Not Responding' appeared. This rarely happened in the past, but has occurred a few times over the last week or so. Today there have been 3 instances - and I have a few hours left before I close down. (NB Actions other than add-a-person may have caused earlier failures - at the time I didn't note the action I was taking) After each failure I have closed TMG, reloaded, then Optimized, ReIndexed, Optimized. The last time 'String too long to fit' appeared when I tried to load TMG. I reloaded and it loaded normally. Running maintenance, Optimize reported difference 705,182 bytes. This error may be just a 'one off' I have two databases open. Could this have a bearing on the problem? I am running Windows 7 Home premium, UK Gold version. Any suggestions much appreciated.
  14. I have custom tags for the various UK census, i.e. Census 1841, Census 1851 etc. About half of my Census 1911 data appeared with a spurious tag Census 186111. (Due to some boneheaded action of mine) I did a LOP for the bogus census, and using this started manually changing the tag to Census 1911. After a long, boring day decided there must be a better way. Using edit I renamed Census 186111 to Census 1911.So now I have two 1911 tags, one 465 records, the other 424. Pause for thought; at the bottom of the pit, stop digging. Is there a way to merge the two tags? I had thought of splitting one lot into a temporary database, deleting the 'empty' Tag in the main database, then combining the two databases. Would this work? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
  15. Merge Duplicate Tags?

Terry, Once again you came to the rescue - many, many thanks! Pat P.S. Started 08:46, completed about 09:36 including pause for thought and time to make and drink a cup of coffee. What a times-saver! Many thanks John & Terry.
  16. Rebuild All Sentences

Sorry for such a simple query but setting up Roles and Sentences for Multiple Marriages based on Terry's TMG Tips has left me dizzy. Terry's instruction are perfectly clear - it's me at fault. Having mucked up Principal, Witness, Bride & Groom sentences I wish to return only these to default values. 'Rebuild All Sentences' - its the 'All' that worries me. In editing the Tag Type Def., Roles & Sentences, selecting Principal then Rebuild All Sentences, can I assume that only the Principal's sentence is returned to default? I understand that future Principals will have the default value, but sentences for existing Principals will remain the same. Is this correct? I'm using language SS1, default English UK. Pat Dunbar
  17. Rebuild All Sentences

Jim & Terry, Many thanks! Pat
  18. I'm running UK Gold, fully updated, XP Pro Build 2600 Service pack 3. ASCII text will write Journal files. ASCII without soft CR/LF and Word files will not write Journal files. "Preview" displays correctly. I usually save to an external HDD, but have tried saving to the TMG default and the C root directory, but still no good. Free space on F: 212 GB; C: 57.3GB:RAM 768 Mb. I have also tried all maintenance programs, and also reset Journal Report Definition Screen to default values before repeating tests. For the tests I used a file with less than 30 names and minimum information and no external files. In operation, the (Word) report attempts to write to disk, and "Wait" is displayed. I tried leaving it for several minutes but that didn't work. To abort, I open the Windows Task Manager; selecting 'End Task' immediately ends 'writing' and brings up the '... do you want to view ...' window. The resultant file contains no text. In early attempts '...Conversion error 3 ... could not open CONV_LOG on scratch drive ...' appeared, but I haven't seen this on recent tests. Over many years I have had no problems with these reports. Am I losing my marbles, or is my software sick? I would be very grateful for some expert help! Pat
  19. I could write ASCII text Journal reports, but Word Journal reports resulted in the the message '...Conversion error 3 ... could not create or open CONV_LOG on scratch drive ...' After me spending a week of unsuccessful tinkering Phil DaSilva of TMG Support contacted me and suggested restoring Windows. I picked a date prior to my last successful report and that fixed it. Many thanks to Phil and all the others who offered help. Pat
  20. I have also posted this on the Ver. 7 Forum I'm running UK Gold, fully updated, XP Pro Build 2600 Service pack 3. ASCII text will write Journal files. 21. Word Journal Report Problem

Virginia, I don't know what happened, but I responded earlier but my message seems to have gone astray. To repeat my earlier message - Before I acted on your suggestions I received a message from Phil DaSilva of TMG Support and at his suggestion I 'restored' to a date earlier than my last successful Word report. This seems to have fixed it. In the hope that I don't add to the confusion I experienced reading the Conversion Error 3 correspondence I will post a 'new topic' to suggest restoring as a possible solution. Kind regards - and thanks for your help! Pat
  22. Conversion Error 3

How can I clear this error? See my earlier posting - unable to write a Word Journal report. I have done much computer housekeeping, and the Conversion Error 3 has re-appeared. I can write Journal Reports in ASCII.TXT format but not as ASCII.TXT without soft CR/LF, Word or other WP files Pat
  23. Conversion Error 3

Terry, Many thanks for the hint. At the suggestion of Phil DaSilva of TMG Support I 'Restored' to a date earlier than my last successful report and that has fixed the problem. Pat
  24. Word Journal Report Problem

Virginia, Many thanks for the response. I considered a scratch drive fault, but ASCII text reports can be written therefore TMG can set up and use a scratch file. To me this suggests that TMG rather than my computer is at fault. As none of the WP formats work, the inability to set up a scratch file may be the result of a corrupted file common to all WP formats. Again, this may be a TMG fault. Tech Support now have all details. I haven't had a TMG problem for years ... Pat
