  1. GeneaQuilts

Thank you Chris & June. In fact it is the seal of the 1st king of Portugal (btw 1143-1185), now reproduced on one face of the eurocents coined in Portugal. It is said - and generally accepted - that after about 25 generations he is a forefather of most of the portuguese present population.
  2. External vs. Internal Exhibits

    Thanks Jim, That's good news!
  3. External vs. Internal Exhibits

On this matter of exhibits let me share this. When I began using TMG I used internal exhibits – my mistake – it took me a while to convert them to external. In the process I had to scan a number of documents and used the “Scan” button that the exhibit log window conveniently offers. This option turned out to be another mistake, for the jpg file produced is not readable by any common image viewer software, though TMG obviously reads it. I have no idea if this is a bug, but to retain the ability to read these external exhibits outside TMG, even as miniatures when watching the folder contents, I use a 3rd party software to scan the exhibits, and then use the “Add” button. Any ideas about that “Scan” option flaw?
  4. I wonder if there is a way I can get a TMG report, listing the names of the members of a certain generation, i.e. great grandfathers, or nth grandfathers of a given person. Putting it in another way, a report with the names of the 10th (or any other) only generation of ancestors (or descendants) of the focus person. Any help would be appreciated. Vasco
  5. Thank you Virginia. I have just put your suggestion into practice. The result is not exactly what I had in mind, but is close enough !
  6. GeneaQuilts

GeneaQuilts is really a new approach to the way we see genealogy, only by reading .ged files. I have installed this program (together with Graphwiz, as suggested) and the result is very impressive, to say the least. The youtube video deserves a good look. Thanks, Earl for bringing this to my attention. Vasco
  7. Tag Group Control

If I well understood your problem, You shouldn't remove anything. You simply have to select the Birth Tag (on details window) and click "Primary". The Baptism Tag remains almost as it was, losing only its protagonism.
  8. I would like to have on the details window, the information that the subject had a relationship (other than marriage) with offspring. Let's say that the subject was married once, had 2 children, one with the husband/wife, and the other with another person. So, I have 1 "marriage" tag and 2 "son" tag. I would like to create a tag to show the other liaison, since there is no standard one. This may not be much of a problem, and is probably a common situation, but before I choose a "wrong" way to do this, Is there a recommended practice ? Thank you all.
  9. "liaison" tag

Thak you Jim for your prompt answer. Vasco
  10. Entering Exhibits

I have never been very happy about the way TMG7.04 deals with exhibits (internal or external), but as often happens, in time I have come in terms with it using now only external. However, I am wondering if the following is a common situation or is just with me: When adding jpg evidences to the project, I may use according to my convenience, the "Add" button or the "Scan" button. In the first case, I use to copy a previously scanned (outside TMG) jpg file to my exhibits folder and then add it. In the second case, the image is scanned on the go within TMG and the file automatically saved to the exhibits folder. The resulting difference is that while the first image file may still be viewed with any image program, the second opens only within TMG. Again, is this a common situation?
  11. I am not sure how to store exhibits: internal or external ? What are the pros and cons of each type ? I found out that the .jpg files obtained by scanning the documents, after being stored as internal exhibits cannot be opened by other programs, am I doing something wrong ? But if I save the exhibit file myself - also in the same folder (exhibits) - I am still able to read it using TMG or any image program. Any input on this would be appreciated.
  12. I had no such luck. Only the few images "added" were exported, the images "scanned" remained as they were. I repeated the process, but with no progress, from the TMG Utility log: Finished at 19:44:12 Elapsed Time=29 seconds Exhibits=124 Internal images=85 Images exported=0
  13. Thank you Paul. In fact I was suspecting that I should have chosen "external", but only after having about 100 "internal" exihbits...
  14. Yes... assuming that you have some means to convert a PDF to a Word document. It's available online and "free". Google: pdf to word
  15. I wonder if we can output the report to .pdf and then convert it to Word.
  16. TMG V7 on Windows 7

Since you have knowledge of sucessfull healing, I am not giving up... It has, however to be postponed to later this month because I will be out for 2 weeks. I'll keep you posted.
  17. TMG V7 on Windows 7

Well... Jim, I'm sorry to say but after following that recipe - carefully and twice - the problem persists exactly the same. Perhaps it is due to any other "thing" related to the software installed that may conflict with that part of TMG. Two notes: - I was not able to uninstall TMG (twice) using the Windows uninstaller. The error message is "Could not open install.log file". I had to do it the hard way and then repair the registry using appropriate software. That, of course, being the first step was well before running that wp_fix. - All customizations were lost, but it would be a low price to pay if the problem was solved. Not being the case, I did a system restore using a restore point I had created, just in case... Thank you anyway.
  18. TMG V7 on Windows 7

I reinstalled TMG v.7 right now, but the problem persists exactly the same. One thing I did not mention before is that the title of the error message says: "It is not possible to run 16 bit Windows programs". That really puzzles me...
  19. TMG V7 on Windows 7

I'm sorry, but I cannot find that information. How do I see that? It's the Home Edition though. The info I get is: "Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (build 2600)" does it help ?
  20. TMG V7 on Windows 7

Does that "word processing output issue" have anything to do with the problem I reported here ? It is very annoying not being able to use this facility at all, and I'm using WinXP sp3/Office 2003.
  21. Thanks for your tip. It led me to investigate why it didn't work for me. I found that when I set the sort order to "Data set" (or possibly others options) and then back to my usual "Given name, Surname, Birth date", the ES still looks for the Surname. After some time, I verified that I have to choose "Given name, Surname, Death date" to put it to work properly, and then to "Given name, Surname, Birth date". This may be a bug.
  22. Here is a simple suggestion that I would very much appreciate: The Easy Search looks for surnames - first letter of first surname. Most individuals in my database have several surnames, and the most significant is usually not the first, what makes the use of ES as it is rather uneasy, since I seldom know that first magical letter. In fact I scroll up and down the Project Explorer that I keep sorted by Given name, Surname, Birth date. I suspect that most of the users that deal with complex names that do not follow the rule (given name, middle, surname) have difficulties on this, tending to sort the database by the Given name. Would it be possible to let the user choose that ES parameter ?
  23. When I choose as Report Destination a .doc or .rtf file it always returns an error message that translated into english says: "can't find the file c:\program files\the master genealogist v7\wordproc\wpt.sp1 (or one of its components). Make sure the path is correct and all the needed libraries are available" Next, TMG freezes and I need to do a restart. The file requested and several .dll and other files are in fact on the mentioned folder. Output to a .pdf, screen or printer works perfectly. Any ideas ?
  24. Report Output

    Windows XP sp3
  25. Searching individuals

That is a good reason. However I use to sort my database by the Given Name, given the fact that a good part of my ancestors share the same surname. IMHO it's easier and less time consuming to have the Project Explorer usualy sorted that way, and it would be nice to have the Picklist the same way.
