You're not running on a notebook that uses the function keys for the computer functions by default? In this case, getting a function value requires typing the function key while pressing the Fn key. You can change which set of keys is default in the notebook setup.

Another possible issue might be that another application is using the F2 key and interferes with TMG using it.

No, that's not it either.  The F2 key used to work just fine, no matter which other applications I was running.  Now, with ONLY TMG running, it still doesn't work.  I'm running Windows 10 on a partition on a Macbook Pro.

    I'm baffled.

  2. Hello Folk:

I'm using Master Genealogist Gold Edition, v.9.01.0000. Just minutes ago, I was entering data, when all of a sudden, every married woman's married surname disappeared, and the adopted surnames of people also disappeared. They are all still listed when I hit F2 (Picklist of people); for example, my Mother's Maiden name was Johnson, and her married surname was Ward; I can look her up and find her using either surname via F2, but on the details screen her married surname has disappeared! No idea why. I've checked every single "preference", etc., but no clue.

    Ideas? Anything appreciated.

I've entered quite a bit of data today and don't really want to have to do a restore, if at all possible.

    Thanks

  3. All of a sudden, V9 has started messing up my latitudes and longitudes. For example, when I enter (as I do for all places that I can) I enter the given lat/long, the program seems to throw in a "\" in the latitude, which the program does not read. The result is the place listed with NO lat/long. I've tried all lat/long styles, (degrees, minutes, seconds; decimal degrees; etc.) but for no reason I can see, all of a sudden a "\" is thrown into the latitude.

    Help?

  4. Adrian,

It sounds like you haven't actually put the people you want to include into the Focus Group. To do that:

    1. Start with an Empty FG.

    2. Navigate to a screen that shows the person you want to start with, and right-click on that person. Choose Add to Focus Group.

    3. Now, in the FG: Make sure the person you added is "selected" - that is highlighted.

    4. In the "Add Others" section on the right, check the Descendants box and set the number of generations high enough. Make sure the Ancestors and Spouses boxes are unchecked.

    Why uncheck the "spouses" box?

  5. Thanks so much, Terry.

The "filter" thing was indeed red, and now the variant names are back to normal. Phew!

As to the GEDCOM thing, it has been posted elsewhere, but none of the suggested fixes fixed it. The problem is when I try to export a GEDCOM file, no matter if it's for a focus group or the descendants of a particular person, I cannot get an output file larger than 6kb. Usually it's 1kb. The only thing that actually appears in the file is:

    "0

    HEADER"

    and that's it.

    Ideas?

  6. Hello Folks:

Using v9.01 Gold under Windows 7 Home Premium. I have had zero problems with this great program until just very recently.

First was the inability to produce a GEDCOM file. Yesterday I was entering a "nickname" for someone, but when I hit "enter", nothing happened. I tried adding a second married name to another person (F4, name, married), and entered the info, and... nothing. No new tag appeared.

I completely uninstalled TMG, and reinstalled with the new installer, restored my latest backup, but still, neither of these features are working. Cannot make a GEDCOM nor can I add name variations.

    What is happening?

One thing I must add, is that when I reinstalled the "trial version", it did not ask for my serial number, but found it somewhere and inserted it itself. How is that possible, when I had previously completely uninstalled the program?

    Any help gratefully accepted

    Thanks

  7. Note also that the title of this thread 'Show more than one line of a tag' could be confusing. On the rightclick menu in the Details view are options to 'Display more rows per tag' and 'Display fewer rows per tag' - and, if you check that out, it is quite different from the 'Item tips' option.

That is true, but I quite often have so many tags/info for some people, that to "Display more rows per tag" would mean having to scroll down a LOT to see it all. However, that's not really a big deal, I guess.

    Thanks

  8. What would "fixed" be in your view?

Sorry for the delay in replying. Life tends to get in the way, sometimes. Well, I'm not really sure. Something along the lines of "Display all text", or "Display all lines in multi-line text box", or something of that nature. Perhaps "Display all undisplayed text in multi-line text box". Not really sure. All I am sure of is that it is darned difficult to find it otherwise.

    Thanks for your help.

  9. Howdy:

Just updated to V8.08 from V7.04. In my previous version my own "Reference" numbering system showed up in the "Reference" field (of course) of the "Other Info" box of the "Details" screen, but it also showed up in the "Name" line of the same screen. I liked it this way, for a couple of reasons. In V8.08 the reference number shows up only in the "Other Info" box.

Is there some way to get the reference number to show up in the "Name" box of the details field, as it did in V7.04?

One reason I prefer this, is because when I look "Father" and "Mother" tags of the details field, I can see immediately which parent was of which line. In the same way, I can see each child's reference number in the details window.

    Any help gratefully accepted. :)

  10. I, too, had this problem until reading this post. Frustrating to say the least. Reading the "Help" files on V8.08 I just assumed the Project Explorer's "Multiline text" was the answer, but no! I really must say that the correct answer is absolutely counter-intuitive. I would NEVER have found this on my own. "Show Item Tips" to me implies that a little pop-up "tip" or "hint" screen was going to come up. Sure would be nice to have this fixed in the next update.

    Thanks for help!

  11. Hello: Whereas I know that I can import data from several other genealogical software programs in their native file format, is it not possible to EXport my data in the same formats? I have a newly-found half-sister who uses PAF and prefers to import her data in that format. Will I have to use GEDCOM or one of the others in the export wizard?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
