  1. Lastly, an XML full export option would also make me feel safer in that my data could at least theoretically, be transportable should WhollyGenes get hit by a bus.

For XML export you may want to look at modifying/updating (if you can program?) tmg2gramps which converts TMG 6 datafiles to a GRAMPS v2.2.6 XML. So that it can handle TMG 7 & 8 data export.

You can also find a "database schema document" for the TMG 6 format on the same website.

  2. Please advise. Has anyone used Microsoft 7 operating system and the office suite Word 7 for producing reports? Just decendants and journal narrative.

If reports can be done in Word 7, will the people using older Word versions have any problem opening them via email attachment? ( This was a problem if Vista not set up properly I believe. I had a few people who had problems opening. I dont know why)

(out of topic) My Word files for reseach go back to Windows 95. Are there any problems in opening with Word 7.

Advice would be appreciated as my computer may be on the way to heaven.

    regards

    Hi Kaye,

From your message I gather you mean Word 2007?

Generally older versions of programs can not open newer programs data files unless the data file has been converted in some way to the older format.

One way for for people using older Word to open newer/older formats is for them to try the Word 97/2000 Converter for Word 6 and 95 Users or similar type of program from Microsofts website.

My recommendation are to save as a PDF document.

Or you can try to save the file in Word 2007 as a old a file version of Word (select "save as" then select from the "save as type" drop box the file format you want.)

Yes, there is a Word 7 which was also called Microsoft Word 95 it was included in MS-Office 95, I still have it installed on my old laptop with a lot of research files in that format and earlier!

  3. For the last couple (at least) upgrades, I've accepted the online upgrade, without getting the disks. Now, I need to move TMG from an old, dying laptop to my brand new one, but don't know if a complete backup will bring over all the system files, etc. I would appreciate help from anyone, as the tech support line just isn't picking up (been on hold over an hour!) and I'd really like to work on my trees this holiday break.

Thanx for any help you can give and Happy Holidays!

Most likely you will need to download the complete installation file from

    http://www.whollygenes.com/files/tmg7setup.exe

to install on the new laptop.

Then you need to restore your TMG Data backup ( sqz ) file you made.

  4. Brief Details of the public demonstration from one of the attendees Fran Segall

    In summary:

    * No release date has been given by Bob Velke. "It'll be released when it's ready"

    1. Ability to customize the columns displayed in the Person View.

    2. Able to accent specific tag types.

    3. Add multiple people of the same type via a spreadsheet format.

    4. Able to edit the tag type from the right-click menu.

    5. The associates window will be able to display the person's name as selected in that tag, rather than just the primary name.

    6. The Report Writer, has been upgraded to supporting 64-bit operating systems

    --

At the moment no feature list or screen shots have been posted on the whollygenes company's web site as mentioned in the newsletter (But Bob is Busy at work as he mentions here)

  5. Also your PC's CPU needs to support "AMD-V or Intel VT" to to run Windows 7 Virtual PC

Which you can check by going here and downloading the "Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool"

    This is no longer true.

Microsoft has updated Windows Virtual PC with a third Windows XP Mode update that removes this requirement.

Official announcement from the "Windows 7 Team Blog - The Windows Blog:" Windows XP Mode now accessible to more PCs

  6. I have a scanner and OCR program that I can use to produce either a .csv file which I can then use to build a spreadsheet or just a .txt file. Adding the RIN#'s to link to the TMG record and tag types would be no problem and not nearly as time consuming as manualy entering all the data (BMD and residence's as of the report year.) A spreadsheet would be prefferable due to the format and editing ease.

I know that TMG will import from most genealogy programs but I have not seen a plain text or spreadsheet import. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I suggest you have a look at SmartGenealogy as it can convert information from a spreadsheet and convert it to the GEDCOM format to be imported into TMG.

  7. Hi, I have been using TMG v6.12 for 3 years and now have the details of about 300 people on it. I recently had to replace my computer and my new one has Vista on it. I had backed up everything on a separate hard-drive so I thought it would all be fine when I transferred my work, but I can't open up TMG at all. A dialogue box is asking for Microsoft Visual Foxpro software library. I've googled this and it seems to be an enormous download which will take up an awful lot of memory. (and what if it still doesn't work!) A friend has suggested that I download an upgrade which I have tried to do but it is asking for the serial number of my present version. As I can't open it up I can't get to this and unfortunately I don't now have any paperwork from when I bought the original download. (I didn't get a cd version and any email or printout from the time appears to be gone!). Do you have any advice as to what I should do? I'm feeling rather downhearted at the prospect of losing 3 years work.

    Val

    Hi Val,

    Here are the links

    * TMG v6.12 USA installer

    * TMG v6.12 UK installer

You can use you existing TMG 6.12 License/Serial number (If you don't have it just contact Whollygenes support via email support@whollygenes.com or call the Wholly Genes office and they will resend you your unlock info.)

Here are the notes about TMG 6.12 and Vista

  8. How do you know what Wholly Genes are or are not doing.

    Peter

I like to believe Whollygenes are working quietly in the background. Based on their great past efforts, having supported and grown TMG through many upgrades and versions of foxpro 2 to MS-VFP 9, starting in the DOS days right to present day working under the most current "Microsoft Windows 7" Operating systems.

For now we can only go by Bob Velke's statement "We are not prepared to make any announcement at this time regarding future migration " (21 Jan 2009)

Lets keep on wishing for an incrementally better TMG

  9. Found an interesting project, called Guineu The FoxPro runtime.

Guineu list one of it's features as allowing the use of unicode you can see an example here of Unicode on Foxpro not sure if TMG could use it?

Guineu describes itself as a runtime executable for desktop applications. It runs on Windows using the Microsoft .NET Framework and on multiple other platforms with Mono (eg Linux). Guineu.EXE is a console application that covers text-based applications as well as form-based applications. It also creates executables for mobile applications and say it runs on Pocket PC 2003 and Windows Mobile.

  10. My sister in Australia and myself in the US share a comon project. A method to syncronize electronically would be make life much easier.

Another option, if you both have a reliable and faster internet connection is to use Remote Desktop Software .

This would mean one of you hosting TMG on your machine (preferably a third machine solely for that purpose) and both of you coordinating times to edit the same database.

I am not sure you could be both editing the tmg database at the same time.

  11. Hello,

I have recently discovered that optimize function crashes my database of about 91000 people. I have to restore a back to recover - repair or reindex fails after attempting optimize. I remember that there was a problem reported long ago. I have tried using different computers and OS and ge the same results. Upgrading is not an option as some of my favorite features are missing in version 5, 6 and 7.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks, Darryl

    Darryl,

Contact Whollygenes support for help on your issue with version 4.0d.

    What features are missing?

  12. I am using Linux (PCLOS-Gnome) exclusively now except for my photo editing programs and TMG. I want to be able to use these 3 programs on Linux as well and am wondering if TMGv7 will work successfully using Virtual Box and Windows XP. If anyone has tried this, how did it work........any critical TMG facets rendered inoperable?

If no one else has tried this, I'm prepared to experiment.......just looking for possible previous experimenters <_<

    8)

    Joan

    Hi Joan,

Yes I use Virtual Box running TMG7 in winxp under WinVista! (Not linux) and it works so I believe it would under Linux also (Previously I was using VMWARE which works just as well)

I like that fact that I can keep a whole virtual pc for my genealogy stuff and backup and move quickly to better/faster pc's as needed without re-installing from scratch each time.

  13. As a follow-up, GEDCOM was not developed to be or intended to be a standard. It was defined by (and the term is reserved by) the Family and Church History department of the LDS church for use by its members to submit genealogy information to the church. Others chose to adopt that definition as a "defacto" standard as a convenient means to share genealogy data in a text file.

Minor correction the GEDCOM article on wikipedia refers to an email from Bill Harden who was the GEDCOM Product manger. Bill states that the LDS Church choose to create the standard from the beginning as a defacto standard.

Bill harden Subject: GEDCOM and Formal Standards Organizations Date: Wed, 24 Jan 1996 11:53:52 -0700 From: Bill Harten - Organization: Brigham Young University "why wasn't GEDCOM developed through a formal standards organization?..."Thus GEDCOM was born as a deliberate, de facto standard, to be followed only by those who felt it was in their best interest to do so

  14. Are there any plans to make the paths under Current Project Options > Advanced relative instead of absolute??? This has been a huge nightmare and source of frustation for me over the last year since I have purchased TMG.

It would make much more sense to allow a paths such as:

    ..\exhibits

    ..\backups

    ..\timelines

    etc.

Then, when if you open a project file:

    C:\My Documents\TMG\Blah\Blah_Family.PJC

you know that the exhibits would be in:

    C:\My Documents\TMG\Blah\exhibits

    etc.

This sounds like a great idea but not too sure how it would be applied to tmg.

Doug Hennig talks about relative paths in visual fox pro in his blog Replacement for SYS(2014): which is a little beyond me, but here as a reference.

  15. No information has been released about Version 8.

Apart from Bob mentioning that whollygenes are working on version v8 and that it will include the following fixes,

[TMG] TMG v7.04 is now available! "The Master Genealogist v7.04.0000 is now available. We're working on TMG v8, including a fix to the word processor and HTML output problem under the 64-bit version of Windows Vista (the problem does not apply to the more common 32-bit version of Vista)"

  16. Observation of a minor issue that does not seem to impact back up.

The progress bars in TMG7.04 's "Backup Wizard" is not showing the correct progress.

The top bar showing a single files progress looks to always be full and the bottom bar representing total progress, never seems to progress.

On the issue of backups is there anyway of identifying what version of tmg (minor or other wise) the backup came from. If not would it be possible to request that when the backup is saved by tmg a text file is included in the root of the archive containing information that would aid with identification eg: tmg version number, summary information from the preferences box.
