  1. Splitting off a person and his ancestors

Jim, If you have everyone collected in a Focus Group you have the hard part done. Now you just need to follow a few steps to copy them and merge them into the other Project. You can't copy people directly from one Project to another directly, so it takes several steps. Broadly, here is what you have to do: 1. Use the Secondary output of the List of People report to copy the people into a new temporary Project. Use the Focus Group as the "Subjects." 2. Merge that temporary Project into your target Project. That will place them in a new Data Set within that Project. 3. Merge the new Data Set with the existing Data Set in that project. Be sure to choose "A" and "B" so that the new Data Set is "Unchanged" to preserve the ID#s of the existing people in the existing Data Set. Alternatively, you can Copy all the people from the new Data Set to the existing one. 4. Delete the new Data Set from the Project. Detailed instructions for doing the merging can be found in the article on Merging Projects and Data Sets on my website. Using the Copy Persons command is described in my article on Copying or Moving People Between Data Sets.
  2. Where to download TMG V9 ?

Then read the note -- if the link doesn't work contact Jim.
  3. TMG crashes when attempting to load.

No, it says at the bottom of that post it was updated 13 April 2016. This issue is recent and is expected to be fixed soon.
  4. Data entry via Family Group sheet

Bob, Sorry, wrong check box. Try "BMDB events when missing"
  5. Data entry via Family Group sheet

Bob, On the Miscellaneous tab of report Options, check the box for "Blanks for Missing Data."
  6. "expired trial version" message during login

Joe, You have two issues. The request for entering the serial number is a "feature" of Windows 8 and 10 which removes the registration information regularly. The solution is illustrated in an article on my website. The failure to unlock when you try to do so is another issue. The most common reason for this is entering a current email address rather than the one used when you obtained the serial number. You must enter the email address and name as it appeared when you obtained the serial number. Another reason is using a serial number from another version of TMG.
  7. PDF Printer Installation Problems

Judy, Yes, that's what Jim said. You can't use the Save to Adobe Reader option in TMG. Instead, you tell TMG to save to Printer, then select the Windows PDF "printer," not your default printer. That's not actually a printer, but is a PDF generator that creates a PDF file which you then save wherever you want it. I think you missed the last half of Jim's final sentence.
  8. PDF Printer Installation Problems

Judy, See Jim's response in post #2 above.
  9. Want to buy a "used" copy of TMG 9

You can still buy a totally legit copy. See the link on my website in this article.
  10. Internal text exhibits

Jim, Doesn't TMG Utility only move image exhibits, not text exhibits?
  11. List of people by tag type

Doris, Yes, there is. Use the List of People report. Use a Filter like: {select Tag Type} ... # of Tags ... > Is greater than ... 0 ... END
  12. Handling PDF documents

Thanks for letting us know what you found.
  13. Handling PDF documents

TMG does not view any sort of file used as an Exhibit other than images and plain text files. For all others it simply asks Windows to find an application that will open the file. It would seem that on your system Windows does not have an association for PDF files. Have you tried opening the PDF by double-clicking on them in Windows Explorer? I expect you will find that doesn't work. If so, you need to follows the prompts to associate them with Adobe Reader.
  14. Copy of 9.05

Bryan, There is no point in writing to me privately if you are going to turn around and post the same issue on the WG forum a minute later. And there is certainly no point in writing to me privately if you use a challenge/response spam system because I'm not going to bother with that nonsense when you have asked me for help.
  15. Copy of 9.05

Jim, That link no longer works. We need to ask Bob what's going on.
  16. Ehibits - More than one folder

Cathy, Show how? So far as I know the only common operation in which the exhibit folder is displayed is when one clicks the Add button on the Exhibit Log and a standard Windows dialog box is opened, with the Exhibit Folder as focus. That dialog can only focus on a single folder. You can put your exhibits any place, or places, you want. However putting them any place other than in a single folder, or a tree of folders with a common base, creates a number of practical issues. Assuming you have created a tree with a common base folder, making that base folder your designated Exhibit Folder is the best you can do.
  17. Viewing Tag Dates

Chris, The standard burial tag cannot do that, because it is in it's own group, not in the Death group. I can think of two solutions: 1. Create a death tag, with a circa data based on the burial date, or a before date using the burial date. 2. Create a custom burial tag (it would need to have a slightly different name) in the Death Group, enter the burial information in that tag, and make it primary.
  18. Is TMG 9.05 compatible with Windows 10?

Jean, Many users have moved to Windows 10 successfully. I know of two issues, both solvable. As with Windows 8, Windows housecleaning wants to wipe out the serial number regularly and asks you to re-enter it. The solution is described in an article on my website. Elsewhere in that same article are tips for moving your data to a new computer. The other issue is the PDF writer and Windows 10 don't get along. There are two solutions - either use the PDF "printer" built in to Windows 10, or better in my view, send your reports to Word, do any necessary editing, then use Word's PDF printer. There is a separate issue, not really related to Windows 10, but to newer versions of Word - it is not compatible with certain reports, especially Family Group Sheets and Pedigrees. The solution is to output them as Rich Text Files instead of Word files, then open them in Word. That one is covered in TMG 9 Help.
  19. TMG Gold Version 7.04 & Windows 10

Pete, You can't just copy the TMG files, as you discovered. You need to run the installer. Someone may be able to provide a copy of the TMG 7 installer for you. A better solution, in my view, is to upgrade to TMG 9 while you can. If you do get TMG 7 installed you will find that you cannot send reports to your word processor because the report section of TMG 7 cannot run on 64-bit versions of Windows. You can find details on how to get TMG 9 and article on my website
  20. I cannot connect my mother to myself

Dick, The issue seems to be that the Relationship tag you see in the main Tag Box is not marked as Primary. I don't know why happened, but you should be able to fix it. With you as the focus in the Person View, click on that Tag and click the [ * ], or press the * key on the keyboard, to make that tag Primary. That should do it.
  21. Crossword Puzzle As a Source

I find the Manuscript (unfilmed) Source Type very useful for such miscellaneous items. You can enter the creator as "Subject" explain the type of item in the "Record Type." It works even better if you add the source element to the Full footnote template so you can provide a fuller description in the first footnote.
  22. Printing to JPG

Bob, Are you sure it's really stopped? Windows has a nasty habit of getting in a snit when programs are too busy to respond to it's nagging and report they are are not responding when they are still working. Check Task Manager, the Processes tab, to see if VCF is still working.
  23. TMG6.12 options

Yes, you can Backup in TMG 6 and Restore in TMG 9 and ignore all the intermediate versions. See my article on Moving Data to New Computer or Version for some tips on how to make all the necessary steps. At last report there were still a few serial numbers for TMG 9 available. I urge you to move quickly if that's what you want to do. See my article The Future for TMG Users for the address of the available reseller and links to the installers.
  24. Missing Source

    You're welcome, Bob.
  25. Missing Source

Bob, Probably because it's marked "inactive" though I have no idea how that happened. On the Master Source List, click the "More" button at the lower right. Find then new source - an easy way would be to sort them by source number, so it will be at the bottom. Once you find it and open it, look at the General tab near the top for a check box for "Active? and change that to Yes. You can then return to the "Less" view of the MSL.
