  1. expired version

Marney, Would I be far off to assume that you have recently upgraded to Windows 10? In any case, the instructions at http://tmg.reigelridge.com/new-computer-version.htm#unlock should fix the issue.
  2. Individual Detail Report Memo Variables

Joe, The Individual Detail Report, like the Family Group Sheet, does not use Sentences. As a result, it does not process Sentence Variables. the [bOLD:], [:CR:] codes you mention are not considered variables, but "printer codes," and are not part of Sentence processing. I think you have two choices: 1) If you intend to use the ID report, refrain from using Variables, or 2) ignore the ID report and use variables whenever they are useful (my choice).
  3. What program out there will support TMG 6.12?

Brenda, The short answer is no. The more complete answer is that how much you will lose depends a lot on how you have used TMG, which features you used, and which replacement program you choose if you decide to change programs. The TMGRefuges list on Rootsweb is probably the best source for information about transferring to other programs. Several programs now have direct import features which should cause the minimum data loss possible with each program. However you should inquire whether they can import from TMG 6 since there have been several changes in TMGs file formats since then. You may want to consider updating to TMG 9. At last report there were still serial numbers available from two sources. You may find my article on The Future for TMG Users helpful.
  4. Automatic Relationship problems

Ruth, I'm confused about what you want. A sibling of an ancestor is not your ancestor, so TMG is correct. Or is this person also an ancestor through another connection?
  5. TMG claims my file is too new

Yes, there were file format changes in the free upgrades to TMG 9, so your 9.1 installation will not open a project created with the later versions. The latest updates can be found at http://whollygenes.swmirror.com/tmg9setup.exe for the US edition. It is a full installer - you don't need to have a previous version installed to use it. Apply the serial number you already have for TMG 9.
  6. Pat, I can't help you with installing Windows XP on your Mac, but others here probably can. Assuming you can do that, you should be able to install TMG6. It will operate as a 30 day free trial if you don't enter the registration number. If you do, be sure you enter your name and email address as you were using them at the time - the serial number is probably keyed to them. You should be able to copy the TMG Project files from the external drive. Be sure you copy all of them - there are something on the order of 40 of them, all with the same name but with different extensions. If you do this, you just Open the project from the File menu. As long as the project was not used with a later version of TMG 6 than is on the CD you will be fine. Alternatively you may have copies of backups (...SQZ files) on the external drive. If so, you can Restore them. Once you have it open you have some options: You could continue to use TMG 6. You can update to TMG 9 - at last report there were still serial numbers available from a couple of sources. You could import the data into one of the other programs that now has direct import from TMG. But you would need to check whether they can import from TMG 6 - you may need to update to TMG 9 for that to work. You could export the data to GEDCOM and open it in many apps. Note that the last two options will likely result in the loss of some data - just how much depends on how you used some of TMG's more advanced features.
  7. TMG Won't Load

Bud, That points to Jim's description of the issue as being correct - you have TMG looking in the wrong place for the project. You need to use Windows Explorer to find them. See my article on installing a new version or on a new computer - the section on paths - for direction. Once you open the project, check the paths in Preferences as that article directs.
  8. Upgrade Still Available?

TMG has not been sold by Wholly Genes for a year now. But the installer can still be downloaded from this website. Serial numbers can for now be obtained from the Dutch dealer, Harry Goegebeur, at harry.goegebeur@genea.be You can also obtain a license from the Roots User Group of Arlington, if you join that group. Info at http://rootsusers.org/
  9. Beyond TMG

It doesn't? The Secondary Output of the List of People report will create a new Project or new Data Set populated with copies of all the people specified with a Filter, selected in the Project Explorer, or collected in a Focus Group. It would be easy to specify a person and his descendants with a Filter. If you want others included, like parents of spouses, the Focus Group is probably easier. It should be available. But why wait?
  10. Windows 10 and TMG 9

An exe is simply an executable file for Windows. There are thousands of them on your Windows installation, including the main program for TMG, TMG9.exe. The TMG installer is also an exe file. For example, the installer for TMG9 US edition is tmg9setup.exe. You should make sure you have a copy of this in a safe place, along with a copy of the registration number, in case you need to re-install and the installer is no longer available. No, you can't copy the registration number from the Help > About screen. But you can by using Help > Technical Support, and on the screen that opens click the Trouble Report button at the bottom. The text file that is created includes near the top the serial number, which you can then copy and save to a safe place.
  11. Premature GEDCOM Export Termination

Whit, The most common reason for exports to be incomplete is that another program in interfering with the file as it is being created. The most common source of this is a cloud backup system that is trying to backup the file before it is complete. The solution is to make sure that the folder in which the export is being created is not subject to backup by the cloud system. Let us know if that's not the case, as there are less common sources of the problem we may be able to help with.
  12. TMG v9 64 bit vs 32 bit

    You're welcome, Michael.
  13. TMG v9 64 bit vs 32 bit

Michael, I think you have the issue a bit confused. TMG 9 is a totally 32-bit program. It works equally well on either a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows. There are no differences. Some older versions of TMG included some 16-bit code in the report writer modules. Those modules, which produce the output of reports in some formats, to word processors for example, could not work on a 64-bit version of Windows. Thus if you are running those versions of TMG (7 and prior, if I recall correctly) on a 64-bit version of Windwos you cannot output reports in those formats. Upgrading to TMG 9 solves that problem.
  14. Beyond TMG

No, I'm not migrating. I've looked a little and have so far seen nothing in the same league as TMG and Second Site. I've not looked at Gramps, because I've not heard anyone suggest it is close to TMG's capabilities. But then I've not spent time looking either. I expect TMG to continue to serve me for 10 or 15 years, at which point there may be an adequate replacement, or I may not care. I would share that there seem to a lot of other users continuing with TMG, at least if sales of my book are any measure. It continues to sell, though at a slower rate than before the announcement.
  15. Beyond TMG

Stan, I can't see the merit of using another program as your main program and then exporting your data to TMG to take advantage of it's output features. The import will be a mess that requires extensive cleanup to take advantage of TMG's output capability. Assuming you continue to add information to your other program, you will have to export and clean up the data all over again. I'd think if you want to make use of TMG's capabilities you would want to make it your main program and enter the data correctly the first time.
  16. Unable to backup

That's exactly the problem. The backup path is saved with each Project. When you move your Project to a new computer (no matter which method you use) that path remains. But typically it is not valid on the new computer, either because it has a new Operating System with different default path names for common paths, or because the user name on the new computer is different than the one on the previous computer. The solution is to correct the path to a valid one. The easiest way to do that is use of the [...] buttons to navigate to a valid path as you did. The differences in the path names between the old and new computer may be subtle, so the error may not be obvious when looking at it. Similar path name issues may exist in other places as well, both at the Project level and in Report Definitions. See my article on Moving Data to New Computer or Version for a fuller explanation.
  17. TMG 7.04 [to last available version?]

You can get the serial number from Harry but you download the installers from the "Update Center" on this site. Choose the US or UK edition from the right-hand column in the top table. Don't be confused by the language suggesting these are updates only - they are full installers.
  18. Franklin, The first suspect is you have changed email addresses and used the new one. You need to use the one that was associated with your purchase of the serial number, and also enter your name the same way.
  19. GedCom export

Martin, How are the notes you refer to entered in TMG? Are they in the Memo of Note Tags, or something else?
  20. Pomola, Did you read the post just before yours in this topic? Harry is the only known source of licenses for TMG 9. Yes, TMG 9 and Second Site both work fine on Windows 10.
  21. Windows 10 and TMG 9

The other problem is it is difficult to type in the long serial number correctly. Once you have it entered correctly, it's best to keep a copy of it, along with the correct name and email address, in a text file in the same safe place you keep your copy of the installer file. That way you can copy and paste it instead of trying to type it in.
  22. TMG 9 US Version download link

Jim suggested customizing your program Layout. In addition to the topics here on that subject, my article on Customizing your Workspace may offer some ideas and some details about to how to make various changes.
  23. Bil, The "Check for Update" feature in TMG, like other programs I've used, only tells you about fractional (free) updates to the current version. So it's telling you that your copy of TMG8 is current. What it's not saying is that there is a new paid version, a totally new program, available. I agree this is somewhat misleading, but it seems to be the industry convention.
  24. Please help what to do...confused

Bil, 1. In my view, yes. If you intend to continue with TMG for a time I think it best to have the latest version, and there are some useful improvements. If you intend to transfer to another program I would think you would have the best results if working from the latest version. But advice from those who have tried would be the best source on this point. 2. I tested transfers to Family Historian some months ago. There were many errors and many features of TMG that are not supported. They have continued development since so again advice from those who have tried it recently would be best. I think the truth is that there is no current program that has all the features of TMG. Your satisfaction with any other program probably depends on which features of TMG you have used and consider important.
