  1. Just recently I tried printing the Individual Narrative Preview report (both with and without sources). The Progress Window comes up, but the report never appears. I have to do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to shut down TMG.

I have also had the Journal Report lock up when I select Unique Endnotes.

    Any suggestions?

I too am getting this and have reported it to TMG, but they have gone silent on me. :(

  2. If I try to backup to an external HD and the drive is not ready I get an error message in TMG. Though I can click on back, forward and finish, nothing happens and I have to call the task manager to get out of TMG. I think TMG always objects to not having its backup to drive ready (whatever type it is).

Yeah, I know, leave the power on to the hard drive and I won't have this problem

  3. I have Pocket Genealogist on my Ipaq PDA.  Whislt you cannot sync back to the master TMG tags, there is "Field Notes" for an individual that you can type into it while at the library for instance.  I insert the name of the library and the research info I gather. When you activesync back to the computer a Report is generated with the information you entered with details against the person in TMG.  I use the report as evidence.  Pocket Genealogist will have two way sync in the future according to the developers.

Further info can be gained at http://www.northernhillssoftware.com/ the developers of PG.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you for that summary - now could you give me a quick lesson on how to do it, for I must have spent 3 hours yesterday trying to work out why I had bought Pocket Genealogist instead of just using my laptop in libraries B)

  4. The only time I've seen this is when the copied text includes a line break before the actual desired text.

Don't think its that, because the dates & places I tend to copy are from the NEHGS site and are often from a column, or from the LDS site. I <think> this problem has only crept in in V6 because I have been doing the same thing since TMG went over to Windows without any snag. I hadn't raised the problem earlier because I thought it might be a wireless problem but I now know that is unlikely.

  5. This is probably embarrassingly simple. I am doing a Descendant Indented Narrative. One of the tags is Occupation. In the memo for the tag, I put in the word "farmer". When it prints out, I seem to lose the memo, because I get:

    "Henry Grimes was a ."

I haven't gotten too fancy yet, so I'm still using the default sentences. It isn't just Henry, because his son is a blank, also.

    What am I missing?

Your occupation tag sentence should read <[D]> he was a <[M]> <[L]>

are you putting his occupation in the memo field? (For a year I always put it in the detail field 'till I discovered the same error)

  6. I have an intermittent problem with pasting to Date and Place fields. Using XP2 and a MS wireless mouse & keyboard I cannot always get a copy paste from say, a website to a Date or Place field, though I can get the same Paste to "take" in the Memo field even when it has just failed in another field.

I have tried Ctrl C Ctrl V etc. still with no luck, as I say, the problem is intermittent and only seems to occur within TMG.

  7. Dick-

I am assuming you are on the XP operating system, and not Linux this time??<g>

My computer showed the same message, "Wrong Destination Path", on an initial attempt to restore a sqz file from a backup on the root of  "Flash Drive F" to a newly created folder on Flash Drive F. But after a little mousing around with the back and next buttons, as well as changing the path in Preferences, it did restore the Sample file to the flash media folder on drive F. I did not have a convenient way to try the letter H, which would be a different memory type with my 9 in 1 USB adapter.

As a further test, when opening TMG with the flash media disconnected, TMG properly greyed out the Last File option for startup.

    John

Is this not due to the ability of XP to re-allocate drive letters when a drive is removed/changed. I too find that my second hard drive (Drive L usually) often changes if I have added or removed a flash drive. It would be nice to have a drive allocation box within the backup routine of TMG as well as in Options.

  8. Searching the TMG Rootsweb list, I see there have been lots of problems with errant punctuation, but could not find an answer for my problem.  :(

Is there anything obvious in this sentence structure to cause 3 periods at the end of the sentence?

[P] <was|and [PO] were> probably married <[D]> <[L]>. This estimate is based on the average marriage age of 25<and [M]>.

Also, my census tag sentences are now printing with 8-9 periods, which seems to correspond with the number of witnesses (others in the household).

It's been a while since I printed reports using these tags, but I don't recall having this problem before. I'm using v6.07, but started my file several versions back.

I started getting this, or at least two or three points, mostly in marriage tag sentences but occasionally elsewhere, several versions back of TMG. St. Barbara suggested I send her my database, but this was back in the days of a dial up connection so I didn't bother. I eagerly await the pearls of wisdom from the ancients here

  9. Can anyone share a good sentence for use with a Marriage Intention Tag? None that I have written seem to apply in every case and half the time I get The marriage intention of She and John Doe were published.

Marriage intention seems to have little parallel with anything this side of the pond and even altering an engagement sentence doesn't always seem to work.

  10. I have a large number of people who are clearly dead (born before 1900) but having a living flag value of "?".  I have sucessfully used the project explorer filter to identify these people.  I would like to update the living flags all for all of them at once, but I haven't been able to locate a way to do this.

Is there a way to update the flags for a filtered group of people?  There are over a hundred in my set and I really don't want to do them one by one.

John Cardinal's donorware TMG Utility will do this for you

  11. John,

TMG Utility can set the last edited date, but you have to create a text file in a certain format. The format is explained on the help page. TMG Utility reads that file and changes the last edited date for each person that is included in the text file. It sounds like a lot of work, but once you do it you might think it's reasnable... especially because there isn't any other way without editing the database files directly! <g>

See the help for "Set Person Field".

Is there anything that the TMG Utility can't or won't do? (apart from nipping downstairs and making me a cup of coffee) :)

  12. If I forget to cancel all the way out of an existing memo and simply F9 then the last edited date gets updated. I can find no way to get back in and reset the date.

Reason being that I use SS and its recent additions index and I am constantly seeing records that I just looked at rather than new or re-edited ones.

  13. Another possibility is to append "(possible ancestor)" to the surname of the person.

Then no matter how you output that person that will be seen by others. Once you verify the relationship, it is only a simple name edit to remove that marker.

I think this will be the answer because every time I look at a report or chart I will be reminded of what is outstanding.

  14. At present, if I add a putative ancestor, I use an accent to change the colour so that I know from the TMG screen that as yet the evidence is not enough. My problem arises when sending a printed pedigree (or chart, or report) to a cousin - the accent doesn't show, the cousin doesn't read the notes and suddenly I am lumbered with a certain ancestor when I know that it was just a name from a parish register who was in the right place at roughly the right time and one parent's name kind of matches.

I wish that I was able to change the font and have them joined in charts by dotted lines. I suppose I could use the word POSSIBLY or PROBABLY as a suffix to the name. How have other people solved this problem ?

  15. I just upgraded from version 5 to version 6.03 of TMG. The program will not back up properly. It gives this error message: "Input file read failure. The error occurs when a file operation is performed on a ZIP file that is locked or restricted by another process. Please check the destination drive." Windows Explorer shows one ZIP file in my TMG folder: The Master Genealogist\buttons\buttons.ZIP. Today I reloaded the software from the CD (having first used an internet download a few weeks ago). It did not help; the problem persists. I would greatly appreciate some advice. Thank you.

Have you set your backup location in File> Preferences> Advanced> Backups ?
