  1. PJC file

First, John, you posted this twice so I deleted the duplicate. Second, sorry John, but the error about a PJC file is usually accurate. I suspect that you were using TMG when your computer crashed and the TMG files were badly corrupted. In all cases I can recollect of this error the only solution was to recover from a backup. As for your recovery issue, this is usually caused by the project's backup .SQZ file not being located on the main internal disk drive. If your .SQZ file is on some backup media, like a thumbdrive or CD, first copy it to disk and then recover from there. Hope this helps,
  2. Another printer problem, actually a few

Jim should be able to help you with your primary printing problem. However, I noted that you said: You probably already know this, but just to be clear to anyone else reading this thread, you do not set the Printer options to "Print" to a PDF printer. To create a PDF file you simply "Save to" a File type of "Adobe Reader (PDF)". TMG then uses its installed PDF printer code to create the PDF file.
  3. Printer Problem

Tom, I don't understand what you mean by "cannot find my installed printer". What version of V9 are you using? What actions are you doing in TMG to try to select your printer and then print? What error messages are shown following what actions? More information might give one of us fellow users more ideas to help. Although "Printer Setup" is in the TMG "File" menu, most people leave it's options set to "Windows default", and change which printer is that default in Windows itself. When you open the "Printers" window (in Windows, not in TMG), does it show your desired printer as the Windows default? When you actually choose a Report from the "Report" menu, the Report Definition Screen only allows specifying "Printer" at that point, which will try to print to the printer set in "Printer Setup" from the "File" menu. Hope this gives you ideas,
  4. UNLOCK KEY

    Correct.
  5. Wrong path for data when opening TMG 8.08

When in TMG open Preferences. Now look under Program Options // General. Note the option near the bottom labeled: Default Project Path. Be sure that points to the correct path for TMG to find your projects
  6. Accent Definition Setting Not Working

Hi Bill, It is not clear from your post which of two ways you have set your Accent color. There is a specific available Accent condition: Is an Ancestor // of ID # // number If this is what you are using then the Accent is being based on TMG's calculation of a Relationship to a person. Normally when TMG changes its focus to a new person it would recalculate the relationship of all people displayed to the ID specified for that Accent. As you say you added some names, then I suspect that for some reason TMG did not refresh its calculation of Relationships, even though it "should" have done so, or (more likely) TMG does not think these people are ancestors. First, double check that the parent/child relationship tags for these new ancestors are Primary down the entire line of relationships which would link them to the identified descendant. Some relationship not being Primary is often the problem with a lack of ancestor linkage. If that is not the issue you might try the following as the only thing I can think of to force TMG to recalculate relationships. In Preferences // Current Project Options // Other select the Focus person to be the same as your Accent and tick the "Automatic "Relation" tag" box. Now click the "Refresh relationships" button. I "think" this will refresh the calculation of all relationships, and might also now update your Accent. You could now untick the box if you do not want the Relation tag to show. As a separate note, many users have noted that the condition you are using is one of the Accent conditions which slow down the performance of TMG. Since it has to (is supposed to) recalculate all relationships every time you change to a new person, this can really slow things down. Most of us highly recommend only using Flag values as conditions for Accents. On the other hand, you might be setting your Accent a second way? Possibly your comment of "checked the Ancestor block in the Flags list to "Y" for each the 4" is trying to imply that you are using the standard "Ancestor Interest" Flag (or some custom Flag?) as the Accent condition? If you are using a Flag and have checked its value, I do not have any idea why the Accent is not working. However, perhaps you are misunderstanding that standard "Ancestor Interest" Flag? That Flag has nothing to do with the calculated ancestor Accent condition mentioned above. It is completely separate and simply provided as a standard way to Flag certain people which you wish to identify as being of some manually entered level of interest to you. An Accent based on this Flag would have a condition of: ANCESTOR INTEREST // = // value Using that, or any Flag value, as the condition of an Accent would give better performance. You might consider setting this standard Flag (or a custom Flag) to some value for all ancestors of the specific ID and using that as the Accent condition. Finally, I highly suggest you review Terry Reigel"s Tips on using Accents on his web page here. You will notice about two-thirds of the way down the page he also suggests "Use Flags Rather than Filters for Better Performance" and specifically suggests not using "Is an Ancestor". Just under that comment is his example "Terry's Favorite Accent Definition" where he describes automatically setting a "Related-by" Flag for Accenting ancestors. Such a Flag can replace the Accent filter condition you are using and give better performance. See also his separate article Creating a "Related-by" Flag here for complete details on how to automatically set the values for this custom Flag. Hope this gives you ideas,
  7. Sort Date in Tags

To expand on Virginia's correct comment, Preferences/Advanced mode allows you to "enter" Sort Dates. The Preferences/Tag box option controls the "display" of whether you "see" the Sort Dates in the Details window. Hope this helps.
  8. Updating v9.01 to v9.05

To expand on Jim's comment, there is no true "update" to Version 9.01. The Version 9.05 full installer file will be a complete replacement of any Version 9 you already have installed. When you run it, it will first remove any current Version 9 program which may be installed and then do a full install of Version 9.05. In fact you can run this same installer file with no version of TMG already installed and it will install Version 9.05. Hope this helps explain.
  9. Problem with ancestor chart

Not sure if your problem is similar to one I had. At your "certain point" is it possible that you have multiple possible ancestor relationships from that point? Just to check, in Version 8, under the Tools menu select "Relationship Calculator". Enter the person at the start of your chart and the person at the "certain point", then "Calculate". If the calculator shows multiple relationships you "might" have the same problem I found. I observed if there are two relationships between two people the Relationship Calculator shows the two relationships, but depending upon the point of view the calculator reports one of them from the reverse perspective. Alternatively, run a Relationship Chart with the "Closest relationship only" option unchecked for the same two people where the Relationship Calculator reported two relationships. The Relationship Chart reports only one relationship. The chart itself has two relationship lines, but both lines show the same one relationship. Does this reflect what you are seeing? If so, this bug was reported and fixed in Version 9.05. That does not help you with Version 8, but may be useful to know. If this is not the same as your problem, please explain further.
  10. Serial Number V8 help

The Serial Number / Unlock code should have been sent to you in an email. Perhaps you might be able to find it in an old email? If you still have your TMG Version 8 installed on an old computer, you can find its Serial No. by the TMG Help menu item "About The Master Genealogist". You can also cause TMG to create a "Trouble Report" text file which will contain all the license information (User Name, Email, Serial number) from the TMG Help menu item "Technical Support" and then click on the "Trouble Report" button. If you do not still have your TMG installed somewhere, be aware that the Wholly Genes store has closed. However, there have been reports that one of the staff still monitors the company's e-mail address, and may be able to help. Write to support@whollygenes.com and enclose as much information about your purchase as possible, e.g. date of purchase, your name, address, e-mail. It is possible that Dorothy still will be able to help find and send you your Serial number. Finally, while you may have the original disk, that installer file is probably a very early version of Version 8. You should download and save the most complete and final version of the full updated installer file of Version 8 while it is still accessible from the Upgrade center here. That file is the full installer and is all that is needed (plus Serial number) to install the complete TMG program. Once you download it, be sure to write it and a text file containing your license information (User Name, Email, Serial number) on a CD and save that CD in case you need to install TMG again somewhere. Hope this helps,
  11. Capitalize first letter of pronoun

First, you have an additional issue with your sentence template by having two variables within a single set of conditional brackets: [sPP] and [RF:Mother]. The TMG HELP explicitly states that “Conditional brackets and variables cannot be nested” and implies that only one variable may be included within a single set of conditional brackets. However it can be shown as an undocumented feature that if multiple variables are included within a single set of conditional brackets, the text within the brackets will be output but only if all variables within those brackets have value. So while your sentence template violates TMG's specified rules, it can work. Second, as Terry notes you must explicitly deal with capitalization for multiple sentences within a single sentence template. To explicitly specific an initial capital, use TMG's "First Letter Capitalize" formatting codes. Try: Again, while this sentence template still violates TMG's rules about nested variables, it will work since [sPP] will "always" have value in this Subject's sentence. Thus whether [RF:Mother] has value will control the presence of the clause.
  12. Paste/Copy Errors TMG 9

Dale, Loss of a function key usually means that key has had it meaning redefined by some other program. Do you have any background programs, like some kind of sticky notes program or something, which uses that function key? Does F3 do what it should do in other programs?
  13. As often mentioned on this Forum, there is nothing special about a CD from Wholly Genes. It simply contains the same full installer file which is available by download. In fact, writing a CD yourself to contain both the installer file PLUS a text file with your unlock code and its matching name and email address is actually a better backup of the program than the Wholly Genes CD which only contains the installer.
  14. Exhibits

Dale, As I indicated in my earlier reply, inserting graphic images as Internal exhibits is a bad idea, which I explain in my book: http://www.mjh-nm.net/SRCGUIDE.HTML#ExhibitIntExt I would highly recommend using the TMG Utility program which can extract all your Internal exhibits and make them External. See: http://www.johncardinal.com/tmgutil/exportimages.htm
  15. Dale, You should probably start new separate posts with appropriate titles so others can comment, but I will try. You don't give enough details to make it clear what the problem is. However, if you are using Soundex sorting, there is a remaining issue with that sorting as described in my list of bugs remaining in the final version of the program. See my post for the description and possible workarounds: http://www.mjh-nm.net/BUGS.HTML#B65 I can only guess, but is it possible you have been adding graphic files as internal exhibits? If so that is a bad idea. There even is the possibility you have reached a maximum file size limit by doing so. For more detailed explanations, see the "Internal versus External Exhibits" discussion in the Style Guide chapter of my on-line book about TMG: http://www.mjh-nm.net/SRCGUIDE.HTML#ExhibitIntExt If this does not help enough, start new topics for each problem and you may get more help. Hope this gives you ideas,
  16. The TMG9 installer file will perform a full and complete installation. It does not depend upon TMG8, and does not "upgrade" that version of the software. TMG8 and TMG9 are completely separate standalone programs. The "upgrade" you mention is simply a discounted upgrade "price" which you were able to get because you could prove you had previously purchased TMG8. For TMG9 you must use the exact name and email address you used for that purchase, and the TMG9 unlock code. Again providing the TMG8 unlock code to WhollyGenes when you purchased TMG9 only proved that you were eligible for the lower price. Hope this helps.
  17. When you run the installer, be sure to right-click on the installer file and Run as Administrator.
  18. TMG as Open Source Project

You can also look at the TMG-REFUGEES mail list. Specifically look at this post on that list concerning the HRE project.
  19. In other words, Diane, there was nothing special about a disk from Wholly Genes. It simply contained the full installer file, which is the identical file which can be downloaded as the "trial" version. That trial version becomes the full complete version once it is unlocked with the unlock code. So as Terry suggests, just burn the downloaded V9.05 installer file on to your own disk along with a text file containing the unlock code and the name and email address associated with that unlock code. Then you will have everything you need on that disk to reinstall TMG if "the web link dries up".
  20. I think he meant to say "acquired" rather than "required" but will let him confirm when he can.
  21. Report Printing

You may consider maintaining an old computer with an old operating system on it just for recording and printing your genealogy.
  22. TMG9 - New Tag Entry uses wrong person

I presume you have done the Optimize / VFI / Optimize maintenance routines on the project?
  23. TMG9 - New Tag Entry uses wrong person

Sorry to hear of your problem, Helen. I doubt that you have done anything wrong. It sounds like you have encountered one of the few bugs remaining in the final version 9.05. I have posted what I know as remaining bugs on my web site. It is possible you have encountered the known issue of strange ID numbers in the List of Recently Viewed People. See my description of this issue and suggested workaround here. Hope this helps,
  24. Report Printing

The reason for the complete rewrite of the report writer for TMG Version 8 was to update it so that reports could be produced on 64-bit operating systems.
