  1. Ahhh!!... You didn't mention that you were not creating the backup on an internal data drive. As I mentioned TMG needs exclusive control of the backup file when it is running. Software drivers for external drives, most notoriously for thumb drives, often interfere with actions to these external devices, attempting to buffer the activities among other things. There have been many posts on this Forum and the TMG-L list over time strongly recommending that backups always be made to internal drives, then copied or moved to some external device if desired. So this "fix" makes total sense.

Glad I could give you a clue as to where to look,

  2. Thank you very much, Michael

    You are quite welcome.

Of course, I will immediately order v9

Good idea. I hope Harry will be able to get to you soon.

and after that I have to try to get Windows running on my iMac. It's an act I've feared for years, but I understand that it's my only chance to re-enable my TMG?

Yes, TMG only runs on Windows.

I have the original CD/DVD with Windows 7. I hope that this wil work.

Yes, I hope it will too. I have no experience with a Mac or the separate Parallels software or installing Windows under Parallels, but I do know that others have been successful.

If you do have problems or questions, you may want to post a message to the TMG-L Email list where many TMG users continue to respond and some users who have done this may be able to offer suggestions.

    See http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Software/TMG.html

Good luck, and welcome back to TMG.

  3. TMG Version 7 has some problems running on the latest versions of the Windows operating system. TMG Versions 8 and 9 were released to deal with many of these issues as well as fix bugs and add enhancements. For these reasons I suggest you try to purchase a license for the final Version 9 while you still can.

    See the topic: http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index.php?/topic/15915-tmg9-final-installers-v905/

If you do choose to contact Harry to purchase a Version 9 license, give him some time to reply as selling these is a part-time activity for him.

No matter what version of TMG you choose to use, TMG will only run under Windows. The only way to run TMG on a Mac is using some form of program which allows a Windows operating system to (also) run on that Mac. Glenn Gilbert (who unfortunately has since passed away) posted several instructions about doing that, especially using Parallels. His most current posts deal with running the final TMG Version 9 on a Mac, but they would probably be adaptable to Version 7.

    See: http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index.php?/topic/15980-tmg-9-on-mac-in-2015/

Note that you will still need to obtain and install an appropriate Windows OS as part of this solution. If you choose to stay with your existing TMG Version 7 then I recommend getting Windows XP. Otherwise the TMG final Version 9 will run on the latest Windows 10.

    Hope this helps,

  4. Sorry, Jack, but I know of no way to suppress the comma from the end of the place name. In fact, it is even worse than that. There is a remaining bug in the final TMG version where that annoying extra comma will be output in reports, but will not show in the sentence preview making you think everything is fine until you generate the report.

See the entry in my list of outstanding bugs:

"Extra comma shows in reports but not in Sentence Preview"

  5. I assume when you say "(I do say to create married name)" this implies you have set the "Preferences // Program Options // Prompts // Prompt for married names" as being checked? A Name-Married will only be created as part of creating a Marriage tag, and then only when the male linked to the Marriage tag has a surname, and there is a female linked to the Marriage tag.

Under what circumstances do you not see these Name tags being created? Are you getting the prompt asking if you want a married name? If so and you click Yes, what do you see in the female's Detail screen?

  6. Hi Judy,

Have you tried the Report Options for the Journal Report on the "Tags" tab? Since you are mentioning events for children, you might try the settings I use:

    • Applies to: Only children that are carried forward
    • Include only: Birth Death
    • Format: He was born in

If a child has their own section (is carried forward) then in the parent's section the report only lists the abbreviated events checked/included, i.e birth/death. That avoids some repetition since all that child's events will be output in their own section. But if the child does not have their own section then all the tags selected for the report are included/repeated for that child in the parent's section. With these options a particular child's data will always be there, either in their own section or repeated within their parent's section. There will still be some amount of repetition within a parent's section, but I know of no way to avoid that and still output all children's information somewhere.

Of course, if you do not want to replicate any child's events in a parent's section you could check the option:

    • Applies to: All children

But then as you have noted, if the child does not have their own section (does not themselves have children) then their events will not appear anywhere in the report.

    Hope this gives you ideas,

  7. I believe the Descendant Indented Chart is not ordering by marriage date because it is not designed to list marriages. It is designed to list "Descendants", i.e. the children, and thus lists children based on their birth dates. So unlinking children from this woman who were not begat by this woman seems appropriate.

  8. Roger,

First, if you only want a calendar of birth date anniversaries, I would suggest you look at John Cardinal's program "On This Day".

    http://www.johncardinal.com/otd/

It can make a calendar from your TMG project of events throughout the year. You can filter for BMDB ((birth, marriage, divorce, death, burial) events, and restrict to Primary events. This might directly do what you are desiring.

However if you want a full chronological list of birth dates you need to do something like Terry mentioned. Terry is correct that the List of People report has no options to format the date, so sorting on a column of the month output with alpha characters does not sort chronologically. However, the LOP does (somewhat) abide by the Program Preferences for the date format. You could (temporarily) set your "Preferences / Program Options / General / Date format" to "yyyy.mm.dd". The LOP output column of "Birth Group* tag; Date" will use that format, and you can choose to sort the report by that column which should produce (approximately) chronological results. Unfortunately, the LOP output column of "Birth Group* tag; Month" expects the input to be alpha characters, and thus the report outputs a value of zero for all months.

However, the List of Events report does abide by the Program Options for the date format. Thus one could perform a two step process using a temporary Flag. Run a List of People report like Terry suggested to set a Flag to identify the descendants which you want. Then run a List of Events report filtered for Principal1 having that Flag value, and Tag Type Group is Birth. Sort the Output Columns on (now with numeric values): 1=Date - Year, 2=Date - Month, 3=Date - Day. Add any other output columns such as the Prin1 name and/or ID and the full Date value.

That will give you a full chronological list of birth dates of these descendants.

    Hope this gives you ideas,

  9. Not sure what the problem was. Compatibility mode got TMG to at least open the Sample project so I could change program settings. However based on Jim's comment that TMG doesn't need compatibility mode, I opened Properties on tmg.exe and turned off compatibility and the program now runs just fine. Very strange, but I am not arguing with success. Just glad to be up and running.

For what it is worth, it is a tablet but I run in desktop mode.

  10. Okay, Jim, I give up

I have a new Win10 tablet and am trying to install TMG. It seemed to install (as administrator) just fine.

I then ran the program (as administrator) and it opened just fine, asked for unlock, and that was successful.

Exit and run as normal user. Opened just fine with the Welcome screen showing the serial number.

Attempt to open the Sample project. The screen clears and the Toolbars all display, but the program just hangs.

Task Manager says program not responding. Must abort the program through Task Manager.

No backup programs (I disabled OneDrive) and no virus protection yet installed.

    Any suggestions? Help?

I am guessing this is some permissions issue, but where should I look, and for what?

  11. Rowan,

I agree that things really look strange. I looks like your database tables have a problem. Have you recently modified or moved your TMG database files or folders in any way? Have you started using some kind of cloud or automated backup program? You didn't mention so I wonder whether you have tried the Maintenance routines available in the "File" menu? Remember to do Optimize, followed by Validate File Integrity (VFI). Repeat those two until VFI shows no errors. Then do a final Optimize.

If that does not work, you could run your V9 UK TMG installer program as Administrator and choose the Repair option.

Report back on the results. If those don't work hopefully another one of us users may have an idea.

  12. When you open the Focus Group window you can click the "Load" button. That will popup a window with a list all your saved focus groups. In that window you can select them one-by-one and Delete them in this window. When done be sure to do the Maintenance routine of Optimize. That should also free up some of this space in these tables.

  13. Len,

Jim has given you excellent advice. As he indicated "Since you have backed up, you are protected from mistakes."

As an additional alternative, if you wish to know exactly what changes there are between two backup versions of a data set, this can be done because you have both a "before" and "after" copy of that data set. You can run two Individual Narrative reports, one on each of the versions of that data set, being careful to include all people and all tags and using the identical report options. Select the output for these two reports to be for a word processor (e.g. Word). Now (here's the trick) use the built-in feature of most word processors to "compare" what are expected to be two versions of the same document. Using the word processor's search facility on the comparison document you should be able to locate all additions, deletions, and changes. A bit tedious, but can be done. (Another reason to make periodic backups.)

    Hope this gives you ideas,

  14. I had been inspired by a book by Reigel, Terry: A Primer for The Master Genealogist, where at p. 72 he describes this wonderful tool called Secondary Output... You now mention a Focus Group... it is dealt with in the above mention primer...

    John,

I highly recommend Terry's book and his web site for excellent introductory explanations of the many features of TMG.

Since you have his Primer, note that his discussion of using Filters begins on page 61.

In addition you should review his on-line description of TMG filters which also discusses both Secondary Output and the Focus Group. That page can be found here:

    http://tmg.reigelridge.com/Filters.htm

Thank you all, but I'll probably be back with another foolish question.

No question is foolish if you don't know and truly want the answer. So keep the questions coming, John.

Hope Terry's explanations give you ideas,
