I am not sure why this has started happening to me. and I have not pinpointed what to do to duplicate it. but I do know with "Alt-Tab" back n forth my TMG Used to suddenly CLOSE down with no warning. This is a "new" problem. Again I am still doing a lot of Alt-Tab, but I have even had it happen without that. Suddenly when I click on the Icon to add a new person the program has all buttons grey out, including the shut down button. My only recourse is to do a "ctrl+alt+delete" at which time once I click on shut down TMG, in the background TMG has a window pop open saying "Unknown member ROPROTECTIONMAN" and so I down the Windows task manager, and hit the OK button on the TMG error window and TMG then closes immediately. I can then wait a bit and re-open TMG and do nothing at all, but hit the add a person icon and have it happen again, right off the bat! I have done the reindex/optimize/validate.. I have rebooted my machine... What is worse I do have times when I can add a new person with no problem as well! So that does not help any with duplicating the problem this does not "always" happen immediately upon opening my TMG. I do know it is only happening when I click on the Add aperson icon for some reason. I can edit and add tags with no problem.. This was NOT happening until just yesterday. I have not installed any new hardware or software for well over a week. Anyone have any idea what to do to stop it??

I have friend who I convinced to buy TMG and she is having the exact same problem! I sure hope somebody has an answer for this soon!! She just received TMG today and is a very unhappy camper! -Kris Krumm

Thanks so much Virginia! I had the multiple monitors selected, my hubby bought me an extra one for Valentines day! I will de-select it. WOW has this problem been frustrating! I am so glad it will now be fixed!

I have create a new tag called "email" so that I can keep them handy for a quick sort. I just enter the email into the notes area, and the date it was last current in the date part (of course). folks are always changing servers and email addresses! Drives me nutty!

I am doing a back-up to an second internal hard drive, which has 9G free space

Well twice today I had an automatic shut down, but this time was a bit of a different twist in that I got a window that said it was a Visual Fox Pro error of some sort (Geesh, I have so many automatic shut downs, that I just ignore with TMG!) But now for the first time I can not do a backup of my data anymore! I have been unable to do a complete backup (one that includes exhibits) for several months, but up to now I was at least able to backup all the other settings in a backup. (The folks at WG support never did figure that one out) But since these two shut downs today now I get: "Input File read failure - This error occurs when a file read operation is performed on a ZIP file that is locked or restricted by another process" The only choice is to hit "OK" and then a window opens saying "Errors occurred during backup. Output file write failure, possible disk full". Well I have 6G free so I know that disk is not full. I have am the only user of this machine, I am the administrator/only user set up for it. I am scared to death of loosing my dataset with no backup, I have over 58,000 folks in there. I have run the Reindex/optimize/validate over and over, but that doesn't change the outcome...still can not do a backup of all settings and data. HELP!

I have this happen a lot if I am using Alt-Tab and lot flipping back and fourth from a TMG window to a Ancestry.com window to enter data ie: census data, etc. I even upgraded my machine to 2G of RAM thinking that would help, but it doesn't. I found if I just close the program frequently and reopen it that I have the best luck. -Kris

When I open a tag and add a town and state and click on the "world" icon to do a search at GNIS website for the county, all I get is: "The requested URL /pls/gnis/web_query.gnisprod was not found on this server." This bug "was" fixed in v.6 via a .zip file download available from WG in v.6 but now appears to be "broken" again. Should I apply that zip file fix to my new V7 program file? I did edit the "webplaces.txt" file via the web/place databases/customize window to what is it "supposed" to be (http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic) but it still is not helping the button work in V7

Actually it was fixed as I said.. "via a .zip file" (link to it was supplied by WG in a newsletter: Wholly Genes Newsletter, 27 July 2007, Issue 2007-11 ) I wonder why they did not include that "fix" in with v7... I thank you for your help, and all is working fine again. I was just afraid to try to apply that "fix from v.6" to v.7 without someone reassuring me on it. I tried it on my laptop installation of v7 first "just to be sure" all would be OK!

OK... New problem... kind of I have upgraded to TMG v7 and back to square one it seems my GNIS is not working again. and by the way... under: File / Preferences / Program Options / Other 'Send URLs to the browser with backslashes' no longer exists. I would have thought all this would be working fine and dandy in V7 ? maybe the GNIS made some new changes to their website?? help needed!

In V 6 I had a backup button in a custom toolbar and I linked it to a backup configuration that I liked. Thus when I wanted to do a backup I just hit that button and it did a backup without even opening the options/settings window. I loved it! I just installed V 7 and my button is GONE so I figured... I will create the button again.. I opened the "customize" area and under "unused buttons" and "FILE MENU" there is no sign of "backup" IMHO this could mean that TMG already "knows" there is a backup botton "somewhere" (although I have no idea where it went if that is the case) or that WG took that option out with V 7 (which I find hard to believe) anyone else have this problem?

Thanks Terry! DUH, I guess I should have looked with my "eyes open" and would have found it at the bottom like you said. Yep there it is! I "thought" when I created my backup I had checked off all the boxes that were in the list! guess I didn't.... ;-) I appreciate your rapid response, I have my button back! Hurray!

I just had the exact same thing happen. but once there were no windows available, I went to "View"... "Layouts" and chose a layout from my list.... then all the windows opened fine using the chosen layout. So I did not have to close V7 and then reopen

One thing I found is to export from TMG as an RTF file, and then open with Word, but do not convert it to a WORD 2007 document. Just work on it from there and this way the large files stay a maximum of the size of a page, instead of blowing up the size of your living room. The whole creation of reports interaction between TMG and MS Word is far... far from being acceptable. I can create a Journal Report of 300+pages and spend 4 to 12 hours editing, creating proper text wraps and photo sizes, before being able to publish, even with editing the master copies of the photo files in advance. Luckily my genealogy it is a labor of love, there certainly would not be much profit from it!

Hello, I was rushing around here and accidentally CLOSED tmg before it had finished a "reindexing" and now the program will not open at all. I get the above error window and "retry" and "ignore" do nothing but bring up the same window and "abort" just closes the error window, but leaves the spash screen and I can't do anything but close it using ctrl-alt-del What should I do? should I just re-install TMG to the same program folder? I know I really screwed up... need help see error window attached Update: Just rebooted computer and I can get a different project to open, but not the one I screwed up. I probably can restore from a back-up, but that is four days old, (yes another screw up, should have backed up last night)

Virginia, I went to the file you said for me it is at: S:\programs 2007\the master genealogist\projects and that folder is totally empty. My project itself I keep on a different drive that being: D:\kens sends\TMG our family with the name of the database being "joint project" therein I only have these file types: .acc .asp .dbf .flp .pjc and two text documents nothing actually shows .cdx

I have WinXP and I am getting all the errors mentioned when I try to do a full backup that includes external exhibits. I don't quite understand what Tony is saying to do for a fix to his problem. Can you please explain it maybe in steps that I can get this Backup to work again? thanks!

I am running WinXP and followed Jim's instructions. My database opens but the link only gives me the result of: server not found. Now I can go ahead and click on my bookmark from withing my browser, for the GNIS webpage, and from there enter the fields for the query myself, and all works fine. so I am not sure what else I might try? Edit: Here is what the line in the browser says: can't find the server at \\geonames.usgs.gov\pls\gnispublic". and by clicking on the browser icon from within my tag window I get this error message: can't find the server at\\geonames.usgs.gov\pls\gnisarchive\web_fips55.gnisprod. so it looks like somehow the backslashes get changed around to be forward slashes? I have applied that update Zip file as directed in the July newsletter, and restarted TMG, and it said it was applying the update... Edit2: OK, I found another post on this subject saying: and once I did that all worked fine and dandy. this is odd, because I had never changed that before and the link using the icon in the Tag window always worked OH Well, I am happy now, all is fine and dandy!

I have reformatted my hard drive after installing a new motherboard and now am re-installing all my software. I have (to best I can see) entered everything as I am supposed to for registration of the software.. My name, my email address (as it was in the email registration that came to me) I even copied and pasted the serial number, so that should surely be correct. But it keeps telling me that what I have entered is invalid. Please help! I am not sure what else to try!

I have been transcribing various obituaries using a voice recognition program which enters the text into a Word Document. I have copied and pasted a particular obit for a person, and then created an individual Narrative to see how it looks. The results are not always the same... sometimes the memo field shows up on the report, sometimes it does not. I am trying very hard to figure out what can be a "variable" that would cause this. I have all obits in the same word document, just a couple blank lines to separate each one. I am always using the same tag, one which I created called "obituary" (unique heh?) with a sentence structure: [:CR:][PG] <had|and [PO] had> an obituary< [D]>< [L]> <[:CR:][:TAB:][iTAL:] [M][:ITAL]> which I have not modified from within any of the tags, only from the Master Tag List. I am simply doing a copy and paste into the Memo field. and getting the hit and miss on the report results. I have not modifed the report definition, I have kept that constant... I can create an IN report for one person, examine it, close it, open that same report for another person.. and never know who will have the memo show and who will not. I have thought maybe somehow some formating was following in the copy and paste, so I right clicked in the memo field and chose "show formatting" and nothing showed up. I can delete all in the memo and then just hand type "this is a test" and that always will appear, so somehow something is happening during the copy and paste, and it is not "always" happening. Of the ten I just transcribed, copied, pasted and created IN reports on only two are not inserting the memo field when the report shows up on screen. I even saw where I could right click on an empty memo field and choose "Paste unformatted text" and tried that with the paragraph that will not insert, and it still will not insert. there are no { }'s anywhere in the obit. I just can not see anything obviously different in the two "problem" obits in comparison to the other eight. I have even taken the "problem obit" and emailed it to myself as a plain text email then copied and pasted it, still that one obit does not show up in the IN report... I am about to pull out my hair! Anyone have any suggestions?

Recently a fellow genealogist sent me a genealogy report created in "Family Origins" (FO) software. Each photo appears in the left and the paragraph wraps tightly around the pic making a VERY nice looking report! I am unable to do this without HOURS of work editing and moving EACH photo after the report is created. (If it is a report with a large number of foks included) She does it all with the touch of a button! I am aware this can be done when you create a website with Second Site... but surely TMG should be able to do what FO can? When comes time to create a large report to use to print a book, I just DREAD the editing I will have to do using TMG!! Of course it does an EXCELLANT job of producing a report if I do NOT include exhibits... sigh Edit Dec 2, 2005: Corrction her program is RootsMagic (Used to be Family origins) I guess RM bought out FO or some such happening... anyways... The wish is still there and hoping for help on the exhibit in reports issue!

OK... I just downloaded and tried the "Pure Text" and used that for the obit that would not show up.. and it still will not show up. So as I suspected, it does not seem to do anymore than what happens when you right click in the memo field and choose "paste Unformatted text" Next I went to the "offending" person, whos obits would not show up and modified the sentence within that particular Obituary tag to: [:CR:][PG] <had|and [PO] had> an obituary< [D]>< [L]> [M] and then put the [iTAL:] thingies inside the memo field and all worked fine and the obit now shows up for that person. What I do not understand is why it works fine without the need to do the above for the other eight out of ten people with obits that I worked on today? The next problem is of course, going back through the thousands of obits I already have entered... and taking a "look see" which ones are not working... YIKES! I had never seen any problem until today... but then was not really watching all that closely, expecially since the ones I had looked at worked, so I took for granted they all were working... sigh Can someone explain why it isn't working ... all or nothing? I am confused

I am using Version 6.07 and I did go and look at what it says for that "Pure Text" program and will try it. I am happy to try anything... but from what I read, the pure text won't do more that what the right click in the memo field does when you choose "paste unformatted text" I also want to add that I did open Microsoft Notepad and paste the obit there, then copy and pasted it back into the Memo field, with no happy ending. And no I am not using a hot key to open the memo field, I am not having a problem with the text being saved... it is there once I paste it and close the "obituary" tag... The problem is that the text from the Memo field is not showing up in a Narrative Report. Well... "Sometimes" it is not showing up... Creating and individual Narrative report for 2 out of 10 different folks it did not show up, Not one word of it. The other suggestion of [iTAL:] movement I have had perfect reports created with it in the sentence structure for this tag for 8 out of 10 times... I used to have it in the memo field and read somewhere on this forum... that you can put them in the sentence structure and save a lot of time, so I did that and have been very happy with that.... I will try on this one person to change the sentece structure from within the tag... then put the [iTAL:] inside the memo... and see if that helps get the memo field to appear in the IN report.

I am trying to find an old post I made, and to print out the response I found helpful from someone. Under my name in the left column it shows that I have posted "55" posts to this board I go to my name and click on "find all posts by this member" or something similar to that wording... and it brings up only 14 results. None of which contain the post I am looking for. This list of results includes my very first post, so it does not seem to be restrictive to dates. There are not links to more "pages" at the bottom of the results page. Where are the other thirty posts I made? I have tried various searches and not found the message(s) either. Of course I can not remember the name of the topic exactly.. but putting a one word search has not brought it up.
