Charts for 6" x 9" book
nbradley replied to Robert Jacobs's topic in Visual Chartform and Chartform Delivery
I was thinking more of his idea to overlap generations which works really well for ancestors but is likely to be a bit more challenging for descendants as you would generally need to move some of the children up or down before shifting the generation to overlap with the earlier one. -
Charts for 6" x 9" book

Robert, Mike Talbot's post (near the bottom of the page) on 5 gen ancestor charts is quite innovative and it might sort out your 1 page issues. -
Burial Year in Children Window
nbradley replied to Marlene Williamson's topic in Older Products and Versions
Marlene The life span shows up from entries in the Birth group of tags and the Death group. Christenings are in the Birth group and hence show up. The std Burial tag isn't in the Death group and hence doesn't show up. My personal preference is to create a death tag with a sort date a couple of days before the burial and use abt ..... for the death date. I know that some people prefer to create a custom Burial tag in the Death Group for when they don't know the date of death. I'm sure that there are other views as well. -
1. go to the List of People report 2. in the report definition screen click on the button "filtered group" then "Add" 3. in the report filter scroll down to "any event ..." and click on it 4. in the subfield selection box hit the down arrow and select "any place field" 5. in the operator box select either "contains" or "equals" (depending on how your data is structured) 6. in the value box, enter the town or country etc that you are interested in

Create a report containing saelected descendants of a person
nbradley replied to rowan.bradley's topic in Older Products and Versions
Rowan, I think if you want to exclude's B's line you may need to temporarily de-link B from A. You could give B a dummy step-father and make that relationship temporarliy primary which would also work. -
Try "Insert New Exhibit (Other)", you will find that CSV files work without issue.

I don't think that users who are passionate about particular issues should be using this site to vent their frustration. I'm concerned that casual users of the site may not have enough perspective to understand that some of the issues raised will probably never impact most users. I think that contacting Wholly Genes directly with concerns is much more appropriate than making strongly worded negative statements on this forum. In regard to some of the issues raised :- - TMG needs to move off Foxpro at some time in the future. Most users trust Wholly Genes to do it before it has too much impact. Very very few users are going to lose any sleep over the issue. - Unicode will come when TMG moves off Foxpro (presumably). It has never been a feature of TMG so to get overly excited about it's absence isn't terribly logical. On my own wishlist it would come it at about no. 100. - Gedcom is an issue for all software so I have no idea how anyone could hold the short comings of Gedcom against Wholly Genes. - Windows 64 bit. It would be nice to get more info on when this is going to get resolved. [sentence deleted. jeb]

Exhibit Log 'File Not Found' Error
nbradley replied to Roy Sprunger's topic in Older Products and Versions
Roy You will also discover that VFI doesn't work very well if you have a deep folder structure to store your exhibits in as it doesn't look at sub-folders. I ended up buying PATHWIZ (which I was very happy with) when I moved from XP to Windows 7 and had to change the paths on all my exhibits. -
The purpose of a filter is to select people/events/citation .. that fit the criteria of your search. The simplest way to print your results for a filter would be to use one of the "List of ... " reports i.e. List of People. You can restrict the output to as limited detail as you require.

5 generation ancestor chart
nbradley replied to Mike Talbot's topic in Visual Chartform and Chartform Delivery
Mike, I used the basic concepts of your "1 page 5 Gen Chart" to demonstrate at our User Group Meeting (Pert, West Aust) earlier this month and the group were very impressed with how good the results were with relatively minimal effort. One of our members has since let me know that she has run with your ideas and been very pleased with what she has achieved. -
A = age of current principal AO = age of other principal

ALT 0163 works for me using num lock on and the number pad. You can also use "Tools, External Utilities, Windows Character Map" and copy/paste from there.

I haven't used Legacy other than to have had a quick look through the free version. I did use Family Tree Maker for a number of years before moving to TMG. The reason I decided to try TMG was that I found a site (7 years ago) on the net that rated most of the popular products of the time. When I saw that TMG had been rated about double FTM, I thought that I should check it out to see if I was missing out. The ratings on the website (then) were pretty accurate, TMG is(was) easily double the product that FTM was then. At that time Legacy was rated in the same ballpark as FTM. The main point that I would like to add in addition to what Terry has said above and what you will find on his website is that once you "get the hang" of TMG you will discover how powerful the combination of Custom Flags, Filters, The Project Explorer and Focus Groups are. Truly a massive difference in capability between TMG and most of the other products on the market. Those combined tools are brilliant for checking your entire database against any source of data you choose. As an example most of the burials in my local city are listed online in the one database. I have a series of filters to check for people who may be buried there and for whom I don't have death details (i.e. have had a major event happen in this state, at least 75 years since birth or 50 years since marriage and have no death event and my custom flag not checked etc). You can save all the "possibles" in a focus group (if you wish) and work through them at your leisure or you can just rerun the filter because any that you have found or flagged as not present wont show up. For me this combination of capabilities is TMG's best feature. You will note that many TMG users have many different views on which are TMG's best features. Legacy does have an add on Charting Tool which devotees are quite fond of. However, a couple of years back at our local Genealogical Society the Computer Special Interest Group asked experienced users of Legacy, FTM, TMG and a couple of others to try and match a rather complicated Chart that the convenor had created in Reunion as a bit of a demonstration as to how to use the packages in a forum. I think he was a little surprised when TMG delivered. Legacy didn't.

Trouble with Relationship Tag in Reports
nbradley replied to pjcopp1's topic in Older Products and Versions
When strange results occur it is always a good idea to run "Optimize" and "Validate File Integrity" from the File, Maintenance screen. This may not solve your problem but you need to do it first to make sure. -
List of Events Report Filter Tag Type Group is "marriage" AND Principal1 given contains John AND Principal2 given contains Mary

Report Options - Secondary Output
nbradley replied to Michael Vance Baker's topic in Older Products and Versions
You just need to be really careful with this one. Each "version" of the List of People that you run will need to have its Configuration saved with a unique name. You will probably also need to save a filter within each version of the list of people again with it's own unique name. I run a lot of sequential List of People reports to update flags. I find using the Book Manager to run them makes sure that I get them all in the right sequence. -
Terry/Jim I agree with Terry that XP Mode within Win 7 is a bit cumbersome for running TMG (bring on V8!) but I find it a really useful facility. I have a lot of CDs which I have purchased with various Aust State BDMs on them as well as some old Cemetery CDs that wont run under Win 7 but will happily run in XP Mode. Terry is probably correct about performance but it isn't critical with these CDs. I certainly don't notice any performance issues but I do have a pretty quick machine.

Have you checked out the "pinned topic" above on how to install a pdf driver for Win 7 64 bit?

Rosanna All of the reports have an "Options" button. Click on it and then for most reports click on the "Names" tab. There you will find a section titled "Identifiers". De-select "ID Numbers" by choosing "None" or one of the other options.

You can try filtering on "Last Edit Date" but be careful because if you manually update flags "Last Edit Date" changes every time you change a flag.

Include Spouse's Parents in Journal Report
nbradley replied to patsy's topic in Older Products and Versions
Patsy, Under Options, Miscellaneous (Tab) you need to make sure that you have checked the "Include Spouse Events" option. -
Rosanna In your steps above you state that you have a perfectly good word document saved in the "report_output" folder. I suggest when TMG asks if "you want to open it now" you do so, confirm that it is what you want and then close it. From your email program when you want to attach your file simply look in the "report_output" folder. If you don't want to do that then copy it to the desktop using Windows explorer. Failing that, I think Gilbert (above) has spotted that you may be selecting the wrong file type when you choose "save as"

Rosanna File/Preferences/General under "Current Program Options" is where you enter your resercher details. With dates, I would test the other choices in the Dates Tab under the Options button until you find a style you are happy with. I use "dd Mmm yyyy".

Dave The Last Edit Date is also of no use if you use Custom Flags to record whether or not you have checked a person against a database or CD. Manual changes to Flags update the Last Edit Date. A field which stored the date of the last change/addition of a person or to a tag would be really valuable (or even if we had the same preference options for Manual Changes to the last Edit Date as we do with changes made from the "List of ..." reports). I understand about the issue of OK vs Cancel which makes sense. It would complicate the programming too much to do otherwise.

Entering/displaying more than 1 set of parent tags
nbradley replied to mark dickson's topic in Older Products and Versions
If they are not already in your database then ADD Father and ADD Mother. If they are then ADD Tag and select Father-Bio etc. Only one set of parents will print on reports so you need to make sure that the set you want is primary. If you always want to see details of the other set you will have to add another tag (e.g. Adoption).
