  1. I have tried three times to download the upgrade to v9.02 UK (from 9.01 UK), but each time I get the message "Error: Wrong file size". The file size is shown as 50.82MB.

I can't find a UK trial version on the WG website to try that method of upgrading.

Is there perhaps an error in the dowload file?

  2. I am sure WG have not been able to address all the points raised on the Public Beta, but one I put still seems to be there -

In the Individual Narrative report, I have chosen to show Surnames and Given names in BOLD. Both in the Preview screen and in a printed report these show as REGULAR. In v.7, these both show correctly as BOLD, and I have used the identical Report Configuration File in both versions.

I have also tried this in Descendency Narrative Reports, with the same result. I have not tried this in other report types. It seems to apply whichever file type is selected.

  3. I have been exploring the use of the "Check for Duplicate People" feature.

    Problems

    1. Although this has worked for me in the past, if I select a pair to exclude (by ticking checkbox and clicking Yes), after the pop-up

window closes, the check mark disappears, and the pair remain unexcluded. Has this been seen before, and is there a cure?

    Questions

    1. Are the candidates held in memory or in a temporary DBF file that I could examine with an external utility?

    2. In comparing surnames, it seems that a duplicate is suggested if the married names of two women are the same (subject to the surname

evaluation criterion), even though their maiden names are different. Have I interpreted this right? If so, see wish list item 3.

    3. The list includes each pair twice - once as A and B, and once as B and A. Is this the expected behaviour? If so, see wish list item 4.

    Wishlist

    1. That the "Merge Two People - Split display" window should show the name of the spouse in the marriage line.

2a. That I could keep the window open while I look at the full details of each candidate in their person view

    or

2b. That there could be a list report of the candidates, to have open in a report window, while I look at the full details of each candidate.

    3. Allow the option of matching on primary names only.

    4. Include each pair of people once only.

  4. Thanks so much, Mark. I see how the styles are constructed. It looks s though I need one which allows for Swansea (City), Glamorgan (County), Wales (Province?) and United Kingdom (Country). Would one call Wales & Cornwall provinces?

Thanks again and all good wishes.

Cornwall is a county. Personally, I call England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales countries. UK is used in formal situations - "I am a citizen of the UK". Northern Ireland is referred to as a province of the UK. To keep things simpler, I would suggest not using 'province'. You can put all these in the 'country' field.

  5. I am using the extended picklist to choose multiple witnesses for a census tag. The picklist is sorted on ID number.

I enter 5986, and click OK.

The "Confirm selection" window appears. It shows people with ID numbers 5, 59, 598, 986, and 5986. This is clearly wrong.

I can see there might be problems with the progressive search (or whatever it's called) on a numeric field, but I suspect the above behaviour is not what is intended. Can anyone confirm?

  6. Michael, I thought of your idea of inserting "xxPGxx" in memo fields whenever I wanted a page break, and then doing a global search and replace after the information is transferred to a word processing program. However, I have not been able to get WordPerfect to insert a page break as part of a find and replace operation. I can get it to insert carriage returns, indents, tabs, and many other instructions, but not a page break. Does anyone know how to do this?

    John

WP Menu item: Edit/Find and Replace

Put your dummy string xxPGxx in the top box.

    Tab to the lower box.

    Menu item: Replace/Codes

About half way down the alphabetical list (some are greyed out) is the code HPg

Select and click Insert (or Insert & Close)

The [HPg] code appears in the lower box

    Click Replace All

Note - it does not work if you type [HPg] into the lower box.

I am using WP X3, but I assume this works with previous versions too.

  7. Hello Half Pint

Like you, on the birth tag I enter the name of the county as it was when the birth occurred. I don't use a separate birth registration tag, but if I did, I would probably not put a county name in, as I think there are quite a lot of cases where the Registration District spans a county border. In your case, the county boundary changed in 1974, so that's a further complication!

    Neil

    Hi

I have a query re the above and would like to know how others deal with it.

A large proportion of my ancestors were born in Ulpha, Cumberland, which pre 1974 was in Cumberland but is now in Cumbria. If they had registered their births within their home county they would have come under Bootle Cul, but the nearest RO was actually Ulverston which they quite often used.

I enter Cumberland as the county when I add the birth, but am in a quandry as to what to type in for the county on the birth registration tag as Ulverston reads Lancashire, Cumberland, Cumbria.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

  8. (Previously submitted to TMG-L)

I've tried both the following in TMG7UK with WinXP. I have only Data Set 2 enabled.:-

    A. Report: List of Sources

Filter: Repository Abbreviation Contains something END

This selects the correct number of results, but

    then terminates with this error:

"Alias 'WFILECIT' is not found. 7 R_LOC_REPOOF"

    B. Report: List of Sources

Filter: Repository Number = n END

(which was said to be broken in v6.12 and fixed in v7).

If I use Repository number = [?], and enter 11,

    it tests against 211.

If I use Repository number = [?], and use the

binoculars to select 2:11, it returns 211 to the

    filter blank.

    I don't have a repository 211, so it returns 0

    results.

In both cases it also returns the 'WFILECIT' error.

However, if I enter 2:1, it uses 21, and returns the

right number of sources for my repository 21, but still gives the

    'WFILECIT' error.

This looks like a bug in concatenating the Dataset number and the Repository number.

  9. Neil,

for the vast majority of List of.... reports you should be able to get what you desire. Although not always as a separate column.....

List of Citations > Options > Names > check "show data set ID"

    List of Events > Options > Output Columns > Prin1 ID and/or Prin2 ID

List of Names > Options > Output Columns > Data Set ID

List of People > Options > Output Columns > Data Set ID

List of Repositories > Options > General > Names > check "show data set ID"

List of Sources > Options > General > check "show data set ID"

List of Tasks > Options > Names > check "show data set ID"

    List of Witnesses > Options > Output Columns > Prin1 ID and/or Prin2 ID

    Thanks, Vera

I should have said I was particularly interested in List of Events and List of Witnesses, where you confirm you can only get the person ID - that would be OK if this included the Data Set ID, , e.g. 1:123 or 2:123. They just show 123.

    Neil

  10. As a confirmed user of multiple data sets in my main project, I wish I could include Data Set ID as a column in List reports. You can do this in List of People, but not other List reports.

I use one data set for people I know are connected to me, and others for people who may be, or who I have investigated and probably are not. It is useful to have two or more data sets open when looking for overlaps/duplication, but a pain not to be able to see in a report which DS a person is in.

  11. The only suggestion I have is that the source number column has shrunk to zero width. There are four columns: Abbreviation, Source #, Surety, and Cited. Try dragging the dividers in the heading line left and right to change the width. I don't know if you can recover a zero width this way.

    Neil

    Hi

Yes, its me again, I thought after reading all the suggested material on the web that I had finally sussed Sources out.

Well again I was wrong. It isn't the first time and it definitely won't be the last (lol).

Would anyone know why there are no source numbers showing on Master Source List, they are there somewhere but I am blowed if I can find them when I add a citation.

Many thanks again for your time.

    Regards

  12. If I move a person from one data set to another, TMG

copies many (but not all, and I can't see a pattern)

Source Types to the second data set - irrespective of

whether or not that Source Type is used in the

person's tags, or indeed in the originating data set

    at all.

I end up with a lot of duplicate source types

(identically named, not for example Census and Census1

which I have seen at some stage), These don't

disappear when I optimise, so I have to go through the

Source Type List and remove each duplicate, one at a

    time.

Is this the designed and expected behaviour? I would

have thought it reasonable to copy the Source Types

that are used in the person's tags, as they may have

been customised differently in the two data sets. But

I don't see the need to copy unused Source Types.

On the last occasion, I was moving the person from DS2

to DS3, because he (a new person) was incorrectly

added to DS2 when only DS3 was enabled. Might this

quirk have something to do with it? It doesn't always

    happen.

  13. Hello,

I have not been able to use TMG for a while (my daughter, who just turned two, requires much attention--if left to her own devices, she'd either crawl up on the rooftop or take everything out of the refrigerator), but I have been keeping up with the upgrades once the list feels comfortable with them.

I am now up to date with v6.09, but to my dismay I find that at some point along the way, all of my custom report definitions have disappeared.

This is not the fault of TMG--I believe they disappeared during a time last year when I had some serious problems on my Windows box or during a disk defrag during the same time.

What I would like to know is if I could get them back from a backup without overwriting my project files? I have added a note here or there so wouldn't want my data to be overwritten by restoring from a backup, but I would love to get back just the report definitions.

Is this possible? For example, would choosing "Restore Customizations" bring the report definitions back w/o changing my data?

    Many thanks,

    Elizabeth Churchett

Why don't you restore your backup file to a new project - then copy the report files (*.rpt) to where you want them - then delete the new project.
