  1. Gary The method outlined by Jim Byram making a dummy project and replacing files worked for me. I made a backup of the sample project, changed the file extension to .zip opened it with Windows, worked my way down through the folders until I got to the project folder, deleted all the files, then copy & pasted ALL the files from the 'old' project folder in. It is not necessary to ZIP the old project folder, in fact I wound up having to extract the .zip file from the person I'm helping, so you can just copy & paste from old project folder into the dummy backup project folder. Windows will compress them, when it finished I changed the extension back to .sqz and restored to a new folder to keep things separate. It turned out that the project I was asked to assist with had internal exhibits so the .zip file was 26+Mb. As things stand now I installed V 8.08 on the persons computer, they are wanting only select people and do some clean-up prior to making a GEDCOM, so they have some work to do.
  2. Record is out of range

If you are running a Parallels or Fusion Virtual Machine on a Mac before you spend all the time on a WIndows install and a TMG install change sharing settings to NOT share with Mac. At least the documents folder. Start TMG it will create a new set of user folders on the Windows side including a fresh sample project open it (be sure it's from the Windows side) and see what happens when you attempt the report. If that solves the problem you have two options, leave sharing turned off or use a data_paths.txt file. See my article using TMG on a Mac http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index.php?/topic/13018-using-tmg-8-on-a-mac/
  3. Thank you Jim & Robin both of you have given me an idea that might work. Using Windows 8 compress utility create a .zip from the old project folder, change the extension to .sqz and attempt a restore in 9.03 and see what happens. If that fails I'll try following Jim's suggestion of starting with a dummy backup. If that fails I'll either install 6.12 or send Robin a .zip file. The person may want to look the project over so I may just go ahead and install 6.12 anyway. I don't have access to the project folder right now, it will be Monday or Wednesday before I see the person again. Thanks again.
  4. 9.03 error?

I've experienced install problems on my Parallels/Win7 vm having to go the uninstall and reinstall route. I've found that after uninstalling I have to manually remove the data_paths.txt file (and any other files that the uninstall may have left behind) from the program folder to get a good TMG install, don't forget to put the data_paths.txt file back in the program folder before starting TMG for the first time after reinstallation.
  5. Data_path File Ignored in v9 Install

I suggest you keep things simple and use the data_paths.txt file to redirect UserData ONLY and let TMG put the other files in their default locations. Simple two line data_paths.txt file [Administrator] UserData=C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\The Master Genealogist v9 From TMG Help Topic: Customizing Data File Storage This topic is for Advanced Users who need to customize the default The Master Genealogist v9 data file folder locations. PLEASE NOTE: If you are NOT an advanced user, then the system is already configured properly for you. Windows XP and Windows 2000 C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\The Master Genealogist v9 (Shared Program Data Files) C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\The Master Genealogist v9 (User Program Data Files) C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\The Master Genealogist v9 (User Data Files) Examples: (Windows XP / Windows 2000 example) [username] SharedProgramData=C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\The Master Genealogist v9 UserProgramData=C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\The Master Genealogist v9 UserData=C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\The Master Genealogist v9 Windows Vista and later C:\ProgramData\The Master Genealogist v9 (Shared Program Data Files) C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\The Master Genealogist v9 (User Program Data Files) C:\Users\username\Documents\The Master Genealogist v9 (User Data Files) (Windows Vista or later example) [username] SharedProgramData=C:\ProgramData\The Master Genealogist v9 UserProgramData=C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\The Master Genealogist v9 UserData=C:\Users\username\Documents\The Master Genealogist v9 Coherence is simply a VIEWING MODE - as are Full Screen, Window and Crystal... basically just the way YOU choose to view the virtual machine.
  6. TMG can’t handle a path that doesn’t start with a drive letter. Depending on your Parallels sharing settings in Windows File Explorer and or Computer you should find a Z Drive and perhaps other drives, (the drive letter may vary, it has been my experience that Parallels starts mapping at Z and goes forward.) In step 2 of the Restore Wizard use the […] ellipsis button and navigate to the mapped drive, for me this is usually way down near the bottom of the list. Look for Home on ‘psf’ (Z:) then drill down to the TMG Project folder (again the drive letter may vary depending on your share settings in Parallels) In the Restore project to this folder: you should wind up with something like: Z:\Documents\The Master Genealogist V9\Projects\ In my article see the section Backup File location. Also read the section: A caution about adding exhibits via drag and drop: Finally if you experience any problems with your TMG project files located on the Mac side relocate them to the Windows side – see the section: Fixing a broken installation.
  7. I use Parallels, however I believe VMWare Fusion is quite similar. If you have not seen my article on Using TMG 8 on a Mac I suggest you check it out. http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index.php?showtopic=13018 Depending on your Mac OS version and VMWare Fusion version you may not need to have your TMG Project files on the Windows side, I've had reports from folks that are running the latest version of OS X and Parallels that they don't have problems with the TMG Projects files on the Mac side.
  8. OT: Parallels and TMG

Bob Larry & Jim have pretty much answered your questions. As Larry says the virtual machine is simply one huge file when viewed in Mac Finder, (the equivalent of Windows File Explorer.) There are settings in Parallels to control Time Machine backups, there is a SmartGuard option that takes a scheduled snapshot of the Virtual Machine and helps to minimize the amount of data Time Machine backs up, I don’t use either. A couple of Parallels Knowledge Base articles you might want to look at are: Backing up virtual machines with Time Machine - http://kb.parallels.com/en/8827 and "Optimize for Time Machine" backup option logic - http://kb.parallels.com/115052 I have my TMG backup files and TMG exhibits on the Mac side and they are included in Time Machine backups. Larry and others have reported they don’t have problems with their TMG data on the Mac side, my MacBook is too old to run current version of Parallels so I cannot verify that; however it is relatively easy to use a data_paths.txt file and move TMG data to the Windows side if problems are encountered. See the Fixing a broken installation section in my Using TMG 8 on a Mac article. A little research on EXFat seems to indicate that it should be OK. http://lifehacker.com/5927185/use-the-exfat-file-system-and-never-format-your-external-drive-again I have a 500 Gb Maxtor Firewire Drive setup for Time Machine, it’s formatted Mac OS Extended (Case sensitive, Journaled), as a test I just created a folder outside the backup folder and using Parallels custom share folders was able to map that folder to a Windows drive letter, in Windows I was able to read and write a couple of test files. My other two external drives are NAS drives (Network Attached Storage, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network-attached_storage) I believe they have an embedded OS; I don’t know how their disk is formatted, they have their own IP addresses and are mounted like file servers. I’m guessing that if the Mac can see the drive you should be able to configure Parallels to map it or folders on it to a Windows drive letter regardless of the format.

  12. TMG 8 - Restore problem

Try moving the .sqz file out of the Dropbox folder before you attempt restore. There are issues when backing up to and restoring from a synced (Dropbox, SkyDrive, iCloud etc.) folder.
  13. 8.07 and Mac

I've been able to switch the operation of function keys from special features to standard F keys 'on the fly' from the Mac System Preferences without rebooting the virtual machine. Maybe there has been a change in the way this works in newer versions of OS X and Parallels, I'm running 10.6.8 and Parallels 6. I like my F keys to do the special features which is the default setting.
  14. 8.07 and Mac

Hi Lorna I haven't made much use of Ctrl+F3 for repeat values, but if P9 is like P6 you can configure a key combination that will send Ctrl+F3 to windows. You need to be in a view mode where you have access to the Parallels Desktop Preferences On the Preferences Dialog choose Keyboard then click the + sign at the bottom to add a new keyboard short cut. Choose the keys you will press (from Mac keyboard) that will send Ctrl+F3 (to Windows VM) I didn't have much luck with Shift+Crtl+F3 but Shift+Ctrl+R works
  15. iPad app

Not exactly TMG on iPad, but Parallels Access http://www.parallels.com/products/access/ will let you access TMG (or any other program) running remotely on PC or Mac.
  16. V6.x to V8.08

Can a backup .sqz file from version 6.x be restored in version 8.08, or does it need to be restored in version 7.04, then backed up again before restore to version 8.08? I will be assisting someone who is now using another program, last used TMG 6.? and has a project they would like to check out before disposing of the old computer. TIA Glenn
  17. V6.x to V8.08

Thanks, I'll try going directly to 8.08, it will be next week before I see the other person.
  18. Google Search by Image

Go to http://www.google.com/imghp at the right end of the search text box you will notice a camera icon. Window your browser, open a folder with images and position both so you can drag an image from the folder to the browser window. When you do that a Search by Image box will open drop the image in the box. It will be uploaded Alternately you can click the camera icon which will open a dialog box that has an upload image link. Search will use the image to find images that match or are similar.

  21. 8.07 and Mac

Over time Parallels has improved the communication between OS X and the guest operating system so as you say “the divide between Mac/Win sides are dimmer or virtually non existent;” what is working for a user with Parallels 8 may not work for a user with Parallels 6. Changes in TMG also affect what works. For most users I recommended that most TMG files be on the Windows side.
  22. 8.07 and Mac

Interesting psfHomeDocuments is the equivalent of Y:Documents, which is on the Mac side, it appears to be working for you, I still advise everything except exhibit and backup files be located on the Windows side.
  23. 8.07 and Mac

I highly recommend that TMG Projects be located on the Windows side to avoid problems. See my article Using TMG 7 on a Mac, it also applies to TMG 8. http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index.php?showtopic=13018
  24. 8.07 and Mac

Wondering if using the process for removing the folders from a broken v8 installation detailed in Jim Byram's article Re-installing TMG8 http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index.php?showtopic=14634 might help.
  25. 8.07 and Mac

Katrina: I believe you can get your v 7.04 serial number from Wholly Genes by contacting support. Michael: Wine type shell is more along the line of a Windows emulator. Parallels, Fusion, Virtual Box allow the user to create a virtual machine where one installs a guest operating system; a Windows virtual machine requires a copy of Windows.
