  1. You can also receive TMG-L messages via RSS just subscribe with your favorite news reader using the URL below. http://archiver.root...s/t/tmg/TMG.rss no need to display your email address anywhere
  2. Variable 'PROPERTY' is not found with v8

Please let us know if moving the project files to the Windows side solves the start-up error.
  3. Variable 'PROPERTY' is not found with v8

Is your TMG project located in the Windows file system? If it isn't please see the forum topic Using TMG 7 on a Mac Although TMG 8 seems to run OK with project files in the Mac file system I recommend they be located on the Windows side. It has also been suggested that TMG be started with the Welcome Screen enabled, I always start TMG that way.
  4. Duplicated roles in Tag Edit WIndow

Teresa - if you saved your screen shots as .jpg, or .png they'd be smaller and we could view them right in the forum rather than having to download .bmp files Virginia handled it
  5. If you start with Why Molecular Genealogy? http://www.smgf.org/..._genealogy.jspx on the SMGF site I think you'll get a good overview of DNA testing.
  6. I don't think there is a 12 marker mitochondrial test . Mitochondrial testing is run on hypervariable regions 1, 2, & 3 (HVR1, HVR2, & HVR3). The test reports the differences from the Cambridge Reference Sequence. You enter the marker and difference in the mtDNA table for each of the HV Regions. Activate the DNA Log click the Add button, in the drop down list for All Labortories choose mitochondrial dna (mtdna) the only choice will be mtDNA, click OK Fill in the table from your SMGF results You can determine which region your differences fall into from the Sorenson Mitochondrial DNA help section http://www.smgf.org/.../locations.jspx
  7. Cannot perform backup using TMG 8

Typing paths into the preferences dialog is prone to errors, you should ALWAYS use the [...] button to navigate to and select the path. When you navigate My Computer/Windows Explorer you may see "My Documents" but that is not a real folder, it's a junction point, the real folder is named Documents. Take a look at my article about Junction Points in the Using TMG 7 on a Mac thread. Look at the screen shot in that article, it shows the command line directory listing. The path to the default backup folder should be C:\Users\username\Documents\The Master Genealogist v8\Backups\
  8. In the instructions for the TMG Users' Genealogy Web Sites Forum There is a note as follows: For web sites on TMG-related subjects, program tips and hints, and other online resources, please see this forum instead. The link is broken, <http://www.whollygenes.com/forums200pf2/index.php?showforum=41> it takes users to the Wholly Genes Home Page. The correct link should be <http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index.php?showforum=41> TIA
  9. V8 on a Mac

My experience with TMG 8, beta and release indicates that TMG 8 functions OK with the User Data (The Master Genealogist v8 folder tree) in the Mac Documents folder, I have not tested running with the data on the Mac side extensively, so to be on the safe side I have setup a data_paths.txt file for TMG 8. A future update might break the functionality. If I recall v6.12 worked with the data on the Mac side, when updated to v7 it was necessary to have the data on the Windows side. If you have sharing enabled between your Win & Mac data folders and have not setup a data_paths.txt in the TMG 8 Program Folder the User Data folders will be created in your Mac Documents folder when you first run TMG 8.
  10. Backup to GEDCOM

If you are running TMG in a virtual machine or in a Boot Camp / Windows partition on your Mac you'll want to make a TMG backup (.sqz file) on your old Windows PC and do a restore instead of using GEDCOM, if you are running a Mac program then you'll have to use GEDCOM to transfer your data.
  11. Install TMG 7

Roger I have no idea why you'd need two administrator accounts ... you only need to run Notepad as the administrator to create and/or edit the data_paths.txt file, this is described in my article... Assign administrator permissions to your user account - Win 7 - Control Panel > User Accounts > Change your account type 1 data_paths.txt file multiple users [username] UserData=C:\Users\username\Documents\The Master Genealogist v7 [username2] UserData=C:\Users\username2\Documents\The Master Genealogist v7 [username3] UserData=C:\Users\username3\Documents\The Master Genealogist v7 If you want to follow John Cardinal's suggestion you need to look for settings in the Fusion Virtual Machine that controls sharing between the two operating systems. In Parallels 6 - Virtual Machine > Configure > Options > Sharing > Configure If you have more than one user each will have their OWN documents folder and their OWN projects folder each is exclusive to the user. - although I haven't tried this I suppose you could create a project folder in the \Users\Public\Documents folder and that would be accessible to ALL users regardless of their permissions. - note when navigating the Windows GUI you will see Users - Public - Public Documents ~ Public Documents is the Junction Point for C:\Users\Public\Documents (see my Junction Points article immediately following the Parallels article)
  12. Install TMG 7

Although my article is specific to Parallels, I think VMWare Fusion is very similar in operation, I believe you could follow the same setup recommendations and have a functional installation of TMG; project files need to be located on the WINDOWS side. If you want/need to adjust settings look for similar options in Fusion.
  13. Family Tree DNA New template for Y-DNA111?

John The DNA Template file is a .zip file with a .dna extension. The contents are a dna.ini file and a .jpg image. The dna.ini file is plain text with a simple structure.
  14. Family Tree DNA New template for Y-DNA111?

I have updated the Family Tree DNA log template, and Jim Byram has checked it out. Attached below is the updated template which includes the new FTDNA 111 marker test. Installing the updated template: Download the .zip file to a folder on your computer Extract the Family Tree DNA.dna file from the .ZIP file. Copy the file Family Tree DNA.dna file to the folder for your operating system and version of TMG listed below. TMG v.7.x Windows 7 & Vista users should copy the file to C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\The Master Genealogist v7 Windows 2000 and XP users should copy the file to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\The Master Genealogist v7 TMG v.6.12 Windows 2000 and XP users should copy the file to C:\Program Files\The Master Genealogist Family_Tree_DNA_file.zip
  15. error message ? missing cue card db

This is a hidden folder. Open Windows Explorer > Organize > Folder and search options: Folder Options dialog box opens on the View (tab) locate the Hidden files and folders item, there is a Radio Button for Show Hidden files, folders, or drives. Activate it and click OK. You will now be able to see the hidden folder ProgramData.
  16. compatibility with windows 7?

I run TMG in a Parallels virtual machine on a MacBook, I don't see a version of Parallels that runs on Solaris, some comments in Parallels forums are dated 2006-2009 Parallels Tools for Solaris? doesn't look very promising.
  17. Sorry I didn't notice this was posted in the v6 section, I think the backslash escape was introduced in v7. BTW the problem with the : does not appear to exist in v7.04
  18. You might try escaping the colon Source\: and see what happens I use RSS Really Simple Syndication to read many Rootsweb Lists, however like Michael I also believe you have to be subscribed to post.
  19. GOTERM error message on V7.04

Terry, It sounds like a data_paths.txt file worked for Rod. In a Parallels VM on the Mac only the User Data path needs to be specified, maybe Rod can tell us if he specified all three paths or just the User Data path
  20. GOTERM error message on V7.04

Most of the posts on the GOTERM error have been reported by users running TMG in a Virtual Machine on an Intel processor based Mac. As Jim suggests check the paths in preferences. Also check the help file topics on Data File Storage, the paths specified in the help file for Vista also apply to Windows 7
  21. Wish List: For this Forum

I'd also like to see this implemented.
  22. Update: Accents issue was resolved when the TMG user data folders were located to the Windows file system.
  23. Hi Karin Still have not had a chance to do any testing with accents. I think we need to determine where your TMG user folder is located before we work on the accent problem. First I will answer some of your other the questions. On viewing mode - it really doesn't make any difference, it's whatever you are most comfortable with and how you work. In Coherence you see the Mac desktop, in Windows view, your Win7 VM is in a Mac window, you can also run the virtual machine in Full Screen mode and it will look like you are on a PC. To find Notepad in Windows 7 -- Windows Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad or simply start typing notepad in the Search programs and files text box just to the left of the Shut down button. We need to determine where your TMG Project folder is... First we should check the Mac Documents folder. Using Finder open your Documents folder and look for a folder named The Master Genealogist v7 If you don't find the folder in the Mac Documents folder check your Windows My Documents folder. On the Windows Start Menu > Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Users > [username] > My Documents You could actually have The Master Genealogist v7 folders in BOTH the Mac Documents folder and the Windows My Documents folder, it would depend on the state of sharing settings in the Virtual Machine Configuration when you started the vm and ran TMG. Switching from WinXP to Mac - Parallels & Windows 7 is quite a lot to take in :lookaround: at once.
  24. I'm not Michael - I have a question, are your TMG projects located in the Windows file system? Please review the article I prepared on running TMG in a Parallels Virtual Machine http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index...ost&p=51722 I don't use accents, in some limited testing in the sample project I cannot replicate the issue, I'll have to do some additional testing in a project with more flags, but I won't be able to do that until tomorrow.
  25. Janis Thanks for the update, glad to hear you've got the mapped drives back. Wasn't aware there was a drop down list of Windows Operating systems in the configuration, but now I do.
