  1. Rootsweb list is ending 02-Mar-2020

Connie's announcement affects ALL mailing lists on RootsWeb.com. So, this affects not just TMG-L, but ALL lists including any that happen to be related to TMG (about a dozen) and to FTST as well, and more. Lee
  2. TMG v9.05 - Win7 Pro SP1 OK, One I have not run across before. A friend in NC has a problem doing a Restore of his Project. The project is on a LAN and everything else seems to be working fine. He wants to Restore as he got fumble-fingered and deleted too much. Fortunately his latest Backup is current. When he opens the Wizard, selects the latest Backup, and enters the correct folder to which it should be restored, and clicks on [Next >], he gets the message "Wrong destination path". He has double-checked the file path (selected using the [...] button and browsing) and it is correct. Note that the file path is a network address. Everything on his network is tied to the username and v9 was installed using default installation. So all addresses inn Preferences have a base UNC of . I have been able to replicate it by using the Data_paths.txt file to put the data on another computer in my LAN (Sue Ellen's) and checking that all Preferences are set to the UNC address . I can operate just fine, including doing a Backup. But when I try to do a Restore using the Backup I just created, I get the "Wrong Destination path" message. Any ideas?
  3. "religion" on ancestor chart

Terry mentioned using a Flag to set Accent colors. This can make some very interesting charts. I had never thought of a chart using the Religion info, but I may try it and think a chart accented by religion would be very interesting. You could set up the Religion Flag using the List of Events report Secondary Output which would reduce the work of setting the Flag. Lee
  4. I am working with a project with five data sets. The Project Summary shows 7211 people with the usual values for names, events, witnesses, etc. Of the 5 data sets, data set one has 7211 persons and the usual other values in the Project Summary for that data set. Data sets three, four, and five show as empty. Data set two, on the other hand, shows no people or anything else, but has 17 names. These names only appear in the Project Explorer (PE) and Picklist. I cannot select any of these names in DS2 to display in the Details window. Disabling all data sets except DS2, Project Explorer shows 13 Primary people and 17 total people. In addition to the Primary indicator, the PE displays the usual familial relationship and clicking on the plus boxes, the PE expands to show the spouse and children. Further, the PE shows the ID with the the "1:" prefix as if this was displaying data for data set one instead of data set two. I have run all Maintenance functions and no problems are found. If I copy the project to a work project, delete data set one in that work project and optimize then looking at the N* tables shows nothing as would be expected of a project with no people in it. One of the persons in data set two has both a Primary and non-Primary name that are the same (probably from a person merge). Going to data set one for that person, I deleted the non-Primary name. Going back to data set two, the non-Primary name remained, and the Maintenance functions did not remove it. This appears to say that the apparent "ghosting" of the names in DS2 is not dynamic as would appear in the PE (& Picklist). Anyone have any idea why this "ghosting" appears? Lee
  5. Yes, but what caused it? The N Table shows the ghosted name record as DS #2 in addition to the correct records.
  6. An update - I found that the one person who had a second Name-Var Tag that was a dupe of the Primary Name Tag also has a Name-Marr Tag that was empty (e.g., Given and Surnames were implied). Deleting that Tag also removed the non-Primary name from data set two after the Maintenance functions. Interestingly, adding those non-Primary Name-Var and Name-Marr Tags back did not restore them as "ghost" Tags in data set two. Lee
  7. Using two monitors

If I "Restore Down" the main TMG window, extend it across both monitors, adjust the internal TMG windows, and save the new Layout, I have no problems with using that Layout. Note that while the main TMG window is spread across two monitors, the internal windows are arranged so that any one window (Details, Focus Group Siblings, etc.) is displayed on one monitor. This does allow me to display all eight windows in the main TMG widown and see them all at the same time. If I switch to some other program, it displays in the monitor on which it was last used blocking my view of TMG for that monitor. This multiple monitor arrangement works best with two monitors of the same general size, but still works OK with different sized monitors.. While I have no problems, and it works fine, I don't like the Layout over multiple monitors - it is just easier for me using a single monitor for TMG (or any program). I have not found any difference with the Allow Multiple Monitor option selected or not. Lee
  8. I assume that the Family Search site address was the only entry in the address area and that it was entered just as you posted -- that is, without any characters setting off the address such as curly brackets or dashes. These would tell TMG that the address should be excluded or is sensitive and should not be printed (absent the selection to print in the Report Definition Screen [Options] window Miscellaneous tab. Lee
  9. Further on this, I set up TMG with DataPaths.txt using UNC file paths/names. Again everything seems to work fine including a valid backup. But again, when trying to Restore the just backed up project, I get the "Wrong destination path" message. I have also tried the DataPaths.txt with the Shared and User Program Data file paths set to the normal C: type file paths. But still get the message. The only thing I can figure is that TMG wants to set up temporary working file(s) and the UNC file paths confuse it. Lee
  10. Do you mean that you have created a new Source Type which have new Source Templates for Full and Short Footnotes and for Bibliography? I assume that this new Source Type is similar to an older existing Source Type but uses some different and some new Source Elements. And, you want to change Source Number 20 to the new Source Type. Also, the old Source had data in it which you want to retain in it using the new Source Type (maybe moving some data to new Source Elements and adding new data for added Source Elements. The simple way to do this is open Source Number 20 for Editing, click on the [source Type] button and select the new Source Type. The General Tab will change to show the new Source Type Source Elements. Those that were the same as in the old Source Type will remain and retain their data. If some old Source Elements are no longer used, the data will remain and you can copy/paste from the old field into the new field. And for completely new data, you can enter it as normal. Lee
  11. One of the more common “problems” experienced by new users is in Sentences that use the Age Variable(s). The user wants the age to print, but it doesn’t print because one or more of the Dates needed for calculation is incomplete. In many cases, the user looks at Help, but gets no information there. This is because the information that is needed in located in a place that is counter-intuitive. That is, there is nothing in the Age [A] Variable Help wording that tells about printing year-only ages. Since the user is not interested in printing days, months, and years (can’t be done with incomplete dates anyway, they figure), they don’t read the second sentence of the Exact Age [AE] explanation. The obvious “fix” to this situation is to change the [A] Variables to calculate years-only when the Date(s) are incomplete and possibly prepend the word “about” to the output to allow some ambiguity. Or, change the standard Sentences to use the [AE] Variables. This last is not necessarily desired as most users would not want the months & days parts all the time. Also, changing standard Sentences may not suit many current users. This leaves only changing the [A] Variable function as first suggested above. However, this may require more work than feasible for an update, and/or may require some added re-design work. Thus, a third easy option is to revise Help to tell the user how the [A] Variables should be changed to [AE] when incomplete Date(s) are used. Lee
  12. Oh yes, One other thing, If you have the process working on one project and want to use it in another project, just copy the Related_by filters to the other project folder. Create the Flags, and go. Hope this helps - Lee
  13. Larry - You don't need to re-create the various filters and report definitions for my Related_By Flag process. Just download the "file of Report Definitions" Zip file referenced on my web page at http://www.tmgtips.com/Related_By.htm>. Then unZip the file and move the FLP files to your project folder and the RPT and RPB files to the Configuration Files folder. Re-start TMG, open Book Manager, and making sure the Related_By process is listed in the upper left, click on the [Create Book] button. Of course, you want to make sure the Flags are created as mentioned on my web page. Hope this helps - Lee
  14. import function

The IMPORT.INI file can be downloaded from TMG Tips again. As Jim noted, it needed to be ZIPped first. Seems the site host changed parameters without telling anyone. Thanks for the heads up, Terry. Lee
  15. ID Creation

Basically, TMG keeps track of the last highest ID number used and assigns the next number as applicable. So if you have a 30 person data set, then ID# 31 would be the next used if normal progression was in effect. But if that 30 person data set resulted from a 630 person data set and you deleted 600 persons retaining the original ID numbers then the next normally assignable ID number would _possibly_ be 631. I say _possibly_ because TMG probably noted that persons above some number were deleted and now the highest ID# is less than 630. So if the now curent highest ID# were 601 then the next assignable ID# would be 602 - or - 31 if the 30 remaining persons were numbered 1 to 30. The same applies to all other ID#s in TMG -- sources, citations, events, etc. Hope this helps - Lee
  16. Research Log

No second level that I recall either. It appears to limit the sort to about 20 characters.
  17. Version 7

Re-read Bob's last paragraph. Based on past practices, it says all that he is gonna say (I could be wrong, but I doubt it). Also based on past practices, anyone purchasing the current version within 90 days before the new release gets the new release free. Buyers of the curent version at the Ft. Wayne FGS Conference last week were promised the new verson free when it is released. I suggest that if you plan to get TMG, so ahead and get it now. Yes, you can use both the current and the new version on either WinXP or WinVista and swap data from one to the other (via a TMG backup file). As for them getting an 800 number, that would cost them money and right now that is the only cost of excellent text support. If they got an 800 number, I suspect they would have to start charging for tech support after a short time -- like most other software companies. Lee
  18. The only way is to add the emblem to the person as a Primary Exhibit. Hope this helps - Lee
  19. citation error?

First, I assume that you mean the Citation Memo field and the Citation Detail field of the Citation window as opposed to the Memo and Detail field in other places. Second, in what context do you get this text? In the field itself? Is it there when you open the window? Is it there after entering your data? Or are you speaking of the output in a report? What report? Lee
  20. Supported browsers

Bob - I just saw your posting here. I am unsure what you are wanting. This site is sponsored by Wholly Genes Software and its product such as The Master Genealogist. The Ultimate Family Tree (UFT) genealogy program is one that was discontinued by its vendor some five plus years ago. Since that time, Wholly Genes has upgraded its products a number of times -- including one that was intended to fill the needs of former UFT user by adding or changing features that they preferred. In August 2000, TMG v4.0D was released with this upgrade. Since that time, Wholly Genes has released two major new releases and many free minor releases. TMG v6.07 is the current version. Hope this helps - Lee
