Try using 'Center the Current Window' on the Windows menu in TMG. It's an off-chance but might bring the Notice down.

Is the problem that you can't see the OK button on the bottom of the Notice window to click on it? If so, you should be able to press the Enter key (same as OK) to close the notice, finish generating the report - and either leave TMG open or close it normally when you wish. That will at least allow you to make reports until we can figure out how to resize the notice.

Can you see any more of the Notice if you close all the toolbars temporarily? If you can downsize it once or move it down on your screen, it should retain that smaller size and location next time.

So you will have a full copy of the Notice instructions I included a screenshot above which you can rightclick on to download and print out.

Let me know if I'm not understanding your problem -

  2. TMG V7.04 ; Windows XP ; Microsoft Word 2002 (10.6866 6867) SP3

A while ago my computer crashed completely (yes I had my up to date TMG saved) and after getting it repaired I set up TMG again but I must have made a mistake in the settings. I use the Journal Report quite often just for myself, but this time I set it up to show the exhibits which I have done before though not for some time. Options>Exhibits>(Images as Endnotes; Include (Export) internal images; Include external images; Copy to destination folder; Reference full path names; Center person images; With caption, Include event images; For each person include: All images)

I got the usual notice as below BUT this notice appears to be too big. At the top it is sitting under the toolbars and at the bottom it goes down below the bottom of the screen. I have tried to manually change the size on the sides by using my browser but although I get the double arrow nothing happens

    Please note

The word file that was produced includes links to external exhibit files

I order to view those images in Word, you must open the file in Word and:

In Word 2003 or earlier ...

    1. access the Edit menu

    2. Choose Links

In Word 2007 or later ...

    etc, etc, etc

I have been able to work around this problem by going Start>Explore and then finding The Master Genealogist v7>Report_output>(and the particular DOC file) and doing what the notice above says and I get the report with the images which I was able to send away to a relative but then I have to close TMG by CTR-ALT-Delete which is not the wisest thing to do!

Could someone please suggest where I should look to change the settings so this doesn't happen again (possibly in File>Preferences) so that I can include the images in the report if needed. At the present time I am using the Journal Report with No Exhibits

    TIA

  3. I suspect that this may be one of those minor irritants (to me at any rate) that Bob V fixes each time he puts out an upgrade but am quite prepared to be told that it's me!.

I have been tidying up one branch of my tree before I send a report to a newly found relative and part of this has involved adding information from the Scottish census entries. For me this involves adding or correcting/altering Tag Entries for Birth/Alt Birth; Occupation; Residence; Education etc.

I notice that those tags that have provision to add a witness have what I think of as "an extremely minor buglet" but one that I have just noticed perhaps because I am using the witness section quite often at the present time. I click + "Add a new witness" and the | indicator appears up the top left hand corner before a 0. Usually in other actions the zero is selected with a blue rectangle so all I need to do is type the ID and it's done. But in this case I have to select the 0, type the ID and then - away I can go.

I used to have two data sets but I have just merged them and now have only one but I can't remember when this single unhighlighted 0 came up

I realize that it may seem pedantic to mention it but it is taking extra time when I know that other actions such as adding a new citation automatically selects that 0 and I can add the citation number without having to delete the 0

I have checked "Add a witness" on other tags and they all seem to produce unselected 0s

(Yes I have run VFI twice)

  4. I have been using the Export Wizard in TMG v7 to set up a GEDCOM. When I open my GEDCOM I see the first name of the submitter (@SUB1@ SUBM) given as Jim but, when I look down to my actual entry, my first names are given as James Robert

Where does the GEDCOM pick up the name “Jim” from as I may want change it to James Robert

  5. Just a thought based on what I do.

Merge your two datasets into one. I can see absolutely no advantage in keeping them as separate datasets. Once they are merged, the feature that you want is there, plus many others. When you find a family connection, you are ready to make the links.

    Best wishes,

    Mike Talbot

    Mike

    Thanks for your suggestion.

I think I will keep mine as it is at the moment. I have just started on v7 and the two data sets go back to v4 when I changed over as a refugee from UFT

I have made a lot of changes in my main data set as I've gone on v4-5-6 and now 7 which are not really reflected in the other data set. I shudder to think of the time that it would take me to correct places, tags etc if I merged both sets and it works for me and I am used to it

    Thanks again for your suggestion

  6. If I remember correctly FoxFont is a fixed width font for FoxPro. If you are missing the font it is possible that certain reports may not look right because columns/Text may not line up.

    Thanks I was just curious

I am now using v7 but have left v6 on my computer and the font is still there. (I have saved four fonts in a separate folder that have been mentioned as disappearing when, in my circumstances, I pluck up courage and delete v 6 :-) )

  7. The point of the new feature is to determine whether the new person being entered might already exist in the same data set so that you don't end up entering duplicates of the same person.

    Thanks Jim

I always say that "No is an answer"; it's just that it would be helpful for me if I could check the other data set when I am entering new people. I'll have to go go back to my old method of checking on the Picklist after I've made the enteries

  8. I have two data sets in one project. The extra data set #2 is what I call "whorthese" and has those people who I think could be family but about whom I am not certain as yet. (For me, the advantage is that I can see all the people in the Picklist providing I have enabled both in the Data Set Manager)

I have been working through a list of people of one of my main branches that was forwarded to me by a relative. Where they are new members (to me) I have been adding them to my data set #1 using "Add Person". Where there is a similar person to that new person in data set #1, I get the notice "Possible matching people:" which I have found very useful BUT it doesn't show whether there is also a matching person in data set #2. (I have checked this with a person's name that I know is in both data sets)

Is there a way to check for all "New People" in all data sets in the same project - if not could it please go on the Wish list B)

  9. I am still using v 6.12 as I have some work to do before I change over to v7. I have been following a thread in the TMG mailing list about what happens when you put v7 on your computer and later on remove v6. four of the special fonts disappear! and so I checked my fonts. I have three of the four fonts on my computer but I can't find "foxfont" in the font list. I haven't noticed any effect from a missing font in TMG- what is "foxfont" used for in TMG - just curious as TMG appears to be working all right!

  10. Jim

I had to send the whole project to tech support and they send me a patch to repair the problem.

    Duane

    Thanks for your reply

I'll wait until after Easter and then send a query to tech support as I would like my existing problems fixed.  (It might take me that long to go through check and them write up what happens in my case :-) )I have always found them helpful

  11. ... custom source types ... UFT ... moved the person ... has appeared in my project. I did not have it before and never used it. Now if I try to delete it I am told it is used eight times. Using a Source report I found the eight sources, but when I go to those sources the source type is shown as "Death Registration (State Level)", which is what it is should  be.

    Duane

I was going to put a query on the Board but then I found your query which seemed so very much like my experience so I'll wait and see what answer you receive

Just one query, do you also have extra sources - Tools>Source Types.  For example, I have two entries one under the other:

    Ancestral File

    Ancestral File

These have exactly the same entries for Full Footnote etc BUT when I run a report like you did they have not been used

Most of the other Sources, some of which I have used, have two and some a lot more entries with digits added after the titles eg 1, 2, 3,  Some of these are slightly different eg I have added < > in the footnotes and bibliography.  The originals appear to be still there together with the change

But as I said, your original description of your problem fits mine

    Jim

  12. (My expanded picklist works alright in my usual project - it's only in my new project that I am having trouble)

I set up a new project on a CD-ROM which may be the problem though I don't think so. I made the new project by going into Reports>List of People and using Secondary Output to create a project with one person so that (I hoped) I would have all the settings that I have on the original projects.

I have imported two different GEDCOMS in as separate data sets. I would have expected similar names to show up one after the other as that was the purpose of the exercise.

One data set shows altogether and then comes the next. If I select a name on data set two, go to the top and click "Name" to show name variation then come out, the name fits into order in data set three. If I keep doing this I could get both data sets in order but this would take too long What have I done wrong

    Jim

  13. I too have experienced this problem, but as it seems so entirely random I have never reported it

I have never been able to get it to do it on demand either.

    Ben

In one way it's comforting to know that other people are having the same problem <_< .

It's been passed on to the developer who said he does not know why it is happening, :( but it does not harm the project :)

So at the moment I'm trying to keep a mental note of everything I do in case it happens again.

  14. Check that the current project path is correct in: Preferences > General > Default Project Path.  Even if it is correct, browse to the project folder with the folder button and reselect it.

You might also try resetting all your Preferences using the Reset button, then reenter the paths and other settings.

    Virginia

    Thanks again

In reply to your first part, I reopened the TMG program - it opened correctly - and I went to preferences and the default project path was "C:\Program Files\The Master Genealogist\projects\" I deleted it, browsed to the project folder with the folder button and reselected it. I closed TMG and then opened it again and it opened correctly

I seem to be getting nowhere fast and, therefore, I have decided to stop trying to find out what is happening as it doesn't seem to be causing any problems to my data base.

IF I get the warning message again I will come back and ask again. I'll watch out for it and note if I did anything special or unusual before I opened TMG

THANK YOU TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO HAVE REPLIED TO MY MESSAGES

    Jim

  15. Try going into Preferences > Program Options > Startup and Exit - and UNcheck Show Welcome window if it is checked.  See if that makes a difference.

    Virginia

    Good morning (NZ time) Virginia

I looked as you suggested in preferences but the Show Welcome window was unchecked as usual. The welcome window only shows up, for me, <_<<_< when the TMG crashes OR after I restart after I get the warning message which I suppose is the same thing. As I said the warning message only happens intermittently. Today when I opened TMG to check the Preference setting it went straight to TMG - no troubles :-)

    Jim

  16. Jim, does it make a difference whether you open the project from within another project, that is from the list of last used projects at the bottom of the Edit menu

I only have the one project  I am using Windows XP and have one project which contains two data sets.  When I want to use TMG, I click “Start” and then click the purple icon for TMG which is in the Start Menu because I use it so often

    or from the Welcome window?

I always untick it when it shows up after something goes wrong so, therefore, when I click the icon on the start ment I go straight to the program.  The welcom window only shows up if something goes wrong like it occasionally does now

If the underlines are the ones that TMG inserts automatically when you make a project, the name may be OK.

The file's name is TMGJIMBEV__.PJC and I am chary of changing it just in case that's the way it should be. I have just created a new project with the name "Trial" and :-) the file name shows as Trial_.PJC so it looks as though the underscore is inserted automatically in the project name

Well I have found that it's not the _ that is causing the warning notice but I wish I could work out why sometimes I get the warning notice when I open TMG and other times I don't and it goes straight to TMG

  17. Jim,

project names cannot have spaces or underlines as the last character.

Seems you need to rename your project.

    Vera

    Vera

    Thanks for your reply

I can see what you are getting at, but why does TMG open sometimes with no trouble but other times I get the above message? It comes on an intermittent basis

I have just closed my TMG and then reopened it and no warning message! (I have not renamed the project name)

My second query would be - Would I still get the intermittent message if and when I rename my project?

    Thanks

    Jim

  18. When I open my TMG Gold Edition v6.07, I sometimes get an intermittent message:

“The file C:\Program Files\The Master Genealogist\projects\TMGJIMBEV__.PJC does not appear to be a valid PJC file”

I click OK and open TMG again and the ”Welcome to The Master Genealogist” screen appears and I open the last one used. I next run: Reindex, Optimize, VFI each time and there are NO problems.

I had a look at this file’s properties and it read as follows

    Size 3.37 KB (3,461 bytes)

Size on disc 4.00 KB (4,096 bytes)

Have you any suggestions as to why this is happening

  19. Create a combination role of "executor and heir" - it will also read better in the narratives than two separate statements back to back would. For an example, see my article on Will Tags.

Thanks Greg for asking the question and Carol and Terry for your suggestions. I'm going to print these off because I have various tags where I had a problem with wanting to use one person in various roles

  20. New Zealand now has its very own map.

I'm afraid that you Kiwis will need to re-plot your pins on the new map, however, because they didn't survive the splitting.  Sorry.

Actually, now they're floating in the water off the coast of Australia  ;)

 Bob, thanks for listening to my plea and giving us a separate map.

Sorry to the others who have been left swimming off the coast of Australia :o but I trust that you won't mind having our own map. I will be interested to see who is near to me

    Jim

  21. Astrid

I tried to place my pin in the right place but like Lorna (at first) I couldn't get it there. I would like to see two entries - one for New Zealand and the other Australia but I was trying to compromise.

    jim

  22. I had a look at the new "Members Map" I finally found New Zealand attached to Australia  If New Zealand is going to be attached to Australia I would suggest that where you have "Choose Map" make it Australia and NZ or even better still New Zealand and Australia
