Problem Assigning Roles to a Principal
Helmut Leininger replied to Joe LaPointe's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Joe, to assign a role to a person that is already principal, you have to "change" it from principal to the role as Terry said in his statement. if this person is currently in the witnesses part (with or without a role), you need to change the role there or delete the person from the witnesses and then assig the role. This is valid for all tags, not just Burial Tags. -
Problem Assigning Roles to a Principal
Helmut Leininger replied to Joe LaPointe's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
I am doing this very often without problems. What are you doing exactly to get this message? Note that the person may appear only once at top left of the entry form of the tag (either as principal or assigned a role) or as a witness. -
Error opening installation log file

For me this sounds like a problem with the access rights. Did you try to run tmg8setup "as Administrator" ? -
Check for Duplicate People
Helmut Leininger replied to jenealogy's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Hi Bev, checking 143.000 people is quite a lot of work to do. I don't know which algorithm TMG uses for checking, but potentially the execution time could rise exponentially with the number of people (2x people --> 4x exec time, 3x people --> 9x exec time). So, probably everything is ok with the program. But I personally doebt that you will/would be satisfied by the output: Too many possible duplicates. -
"Record is out of range" on report preview
Helmut Leininger replied to aalston's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
it is 8.08, there is no FDE folder (help says "for a feature under development", so I think it is not necessary). -
"Record is out of range" on report preview
Helmut Leininger replied to aalston's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Virgina, Yes After more than 30 years working in Customer Software Support (interface between end-user and producer), I know. There mustb have happened something outside of the projects, but I have no idea what it could have been. I did not change anything concerning TMG (except entering new data, no changes in the configuration, reports, ...) for the last few weeks. -
"Record is out of range" on report preview
Helmut Leininger replied to aalston's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Virginia, the logs folder is in the default location and there are no messages in the error .txt file. What is FDE folder? It also happens with the Sample project. -
"Record is out of range" on report preview
Helmut Leininger replied to aalston's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Virginia, there are no messages in error.txt and I have not customized the screen fornt settings. Note: When the error message appears and Ignore is hit, the report comes up immediately. Whether Cancel or Ignore is hit, the report then continues with the secondary output if specified. -
"Record is out of range" on report preview
Helmut Leininger replied to aalston's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
yes, the PDF printer is installed. And, as indicated above, the problem started to appear a few days ago. It did not happen before - no changes done to the system (besides periodical MS updates). -
"Record is out of range" on report preview
Helmut Leininger replied to aalston's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Virginia, File and directory structure are the same on both computers, also the report definition is the same (has been copied and works on the notebook). Preferences seem to be ok (also the xxx.PRJ is just copied). I've also tried on the desktop computer to create a new report with the same specifications - same error (which does not appear if the output is to directed to a file). Verify does not find any problems. It happens with all reports directed to the screen. Resetting to defaults does not help either. -
"Record is out of range" on report preview

Hi Aalston, did you find a solution? It seems I am facing the same problem (windows 8 64-bit) since a few days (did not change the report definition, system configuration etc.) And this is strange: I have TMG installed on a desktop computer and on a notebook, too. Same version of windows, same installation of TMG. The project files and report definitions just copied over from the desktop computer to the notebook. The problem appears on the desktop, but not on the notebook. -
Hi David, I guess the big size of TMG is due to using internal exhibits. What is the size of the xxx_I.FPT file? Using external exhibits instead of internal ones would reduce the size of your project, and aslo its backup time and size. Maybe the problems with the xxx_I.FPT file could disappear, too.
-
Hi David, what is the size of your project? Maybe you could zip the project folder and upload the zipped file to the Web / make it accessible by Dropbox etc. / send by mail (using web storage) ?
-
As filenames in Windows are not case sensitive this should be ok. Did you run Maintenance/Validate File Integrity bfore exporting?
-
It is something concerning the exhibits. Have you checked that the file xxx_I.FPT (xxx is your project name) is present? Do you have problems with exhibits during normal use of TMG ?

Project suddenly needs extreme long time to start
Helmut Leininger posted a topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Hi, Suddenly, my project is starting up very slowly (more than 15 minutes). Please could someone check? The project backup size is about 460 MB. I may send it to any server you want or upload it to my homepage and send you the link. I am using TMG 8.08 and Windows 8. Thanks for your help. -

Hi Jim, thank you for your efforts. This seems to be one of the mysteries of IT. I looked at an older version - and the record 1 of the P table is already gone. I have no idea when it disappeared. And now idea why in this case the project could start up in "normal" speed. The first record has the id 5 (not 1 as in the sample project) and there does not seem to be a record 1 in the whole file. -

Hi Jim, I've uploaded a backup as you requested. The filename is Leininger.sqz, the filesize is 469.801.534 byte. -

Jim, it is only about 3k larger than in an older (still loading at normal speed) version. -
Insert elipsis (...) into memo text?
Helmut Leininger replied to EKVan's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
TMG does not support Unicode (the elipsis is not in the old character sets) -
new exhibit is not added
Helmut Leininger replied to Dave Proper's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Dave, I am always using drag & drop to add the exhibit. Several thousands up to now and not problems. But maybe it has something to do with the size (108 MB is quite large and TMG has to read it to create the thumbnail) ? -
@ installation folder: C:Program Files (x86) onlly exists in 64-bit Windows. Installation to C:Program Files is ok.
-
Betsy, IMHO there is something started by the Windows registry after reboot that deletes TMG. Even if it sounds strange, I would try the following: - install TMG - unistall TMG without rebooting before - reboot - re-install TMG Maybe we are lucky and this cleans the problem.
-
Betsy, which version of Windows do you have (Windows 7 or Windows 8, 32-bit or 64-bit) ?

TMG 8.08 Loads my project very slowly
Helmut Leininger replied to Susan Moore's topic in The Master Genealogist v8
Jim, I also suspected the tag types as the problem is also present with one person only and the _t.fpt file seemed to be quite large. But I have not yet been able to trace it down to this detail.
