The above dna sites (the lineages sub site in particular) have now been revamped to better utilise the dna facilites now available within TMG and take advantage of the newly released version of Second Site 3 which allows result grids and dna signature charts to be created VERY easily with their supporting information all linked. -
Jim L. As Jim B said, the conversions to the TMG format described in Help will lose precision. However, you can enter data anyway you like and ignore the warnings about the incorrect format if you can live with the consequences (I do). As GenerationGoneBy also adds, Second Site can output maps using LatLong data, and extra precision can be gained by using the decimal formats you can extract from places like virtual earth, google maps etc Virtual Earth will give you values in the format 55.802253~-2.210227 (but only understands coordinates input with a , instead of a ~) Google maps will show it as 55.802253,-2.210227 Store these in the TMG LatLong field with the ~ instead of the comma and you can keep the precision of the decimal values, and output your LatLong data to maps from SecondSite

Gender flip of a family? how best to accomodate
LornaHenderson replied to agthorn's topic in Older Products and Versions
William What I think I'd try: Add a new Great Aunt Augusta and marry her off to a new James. then go thru each of the original children and open their Father and Mother tags changing the id as applicable to the new Augusta and James Then if I had other data I didn't want to lose on the original incorrect sex Augusta and Jane, I'd go back to them, delete the marriage tag, change their sex and merge them with the newly created correct versions of themselves to get all the rest of their data back together. This is theory only, I haven't tried it <g> Good luck Lorna -
TMG V7 Output to PDF Problem
LornaHenderson replied to Judy C's topic in Older Products and Versions
FWIW today I suddenly started getting this error code when trying to output a previously successful PDF report. As I wanted the output, I switched to word But then I went back and reran it to a pdf just to see if that fixed anything. It did, for whatever reason the pdf output had stopped working, it now works again. -
Report of recent changes

OR an automatic date added/updated field to a citation. Whereas I've always (well for the last few years anyway) added a mmm yyyy date to the end of my citation detail, I began thinking about the automatic addition of such a date after reading this article: http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:biC4-L...lient=firefox-a (hope that link works, my first attempt at finding this again gave a 404) -

And for something a bit different: http://dnaprojectsportal.com/ - a front end site to several surname dna projects. The TMG database behind this contains "people" for each Haplogroup, tested person, surname project, and has a number of custom tags to create the assorted links and information on each project. http://dnaprojectsportal.com/lineages/ is a subsite of the above (hopefully seamlessly linked via the two separate Second Site generated sets of pages) and contains the lineages for the dna tested people. Still very much work in progress as to content and with one or two more tweaks of desgn to come. -

Change all name spellings from Upper case to lower case
LornaHenderson replied to bradhallsr's topic in Older Products and Versions
Hi, Have you checked out John Cardinal's TMG Utility? It has a function called Capitalise names, which documentation reads: ======== Capitalize Names changes the capitalization of name fields. The function will capitalize any or all of the "display" name fields: Title, Prefix, Given, PreSurname, Surname, Suffix, and OtherName. The term "capitalize" in this context means "change the name field to the usual mix of upper and lowercase letters." That is obviously not the same as "change the name to all capitals," which is what some people thought I meant! ======== The utility is donarware with the donations going to a good cause. Check out http://www.johncardinal.com/ -
Alan Before restoring anything, How did you "rename" whatever 2 files you renamed? Individual files in explorer outside TMG OR via the TMG File>rename project options?:

Creating a seperate gedcom file.
LornaHenderson replied to percy porter's topic in Older Products and Versions
Alan NZ, You might be interested in reading Terry's tips about this first http://tmg.reigelridge.com/sharing.htm I agree wholeheartedly with Terry, in that any time I have shared data via gedcom I have regretted it. However, should you really wish to proceed, you can export data from a focus group. So if you can identify the line you wish to share, add the progenitor to the focus group, select him and select add descendants, and add others Then select all and add the spouses etc etc etc until you get all the people you want. Then use the File Export option. -
Bonita, I have hopes that one day I'll be able to get my dna log data out again! (and TMG Utility will let you extract it in the meantime) I am using a dna project to record (and project manage), participants, potential participants, and pedigrees for a number of surname projects. I find it invaluable in that regard alone. I have lots of status flags for checking things. Also sets of custom filters and reports (eg patriarch reports for my WorldFamilies project pages). But yes, I would also dearly love to be able to access my dna log data and filter/compare that as well. For now, I'm just using the FamilyTreeDNA and WorldFamilies results eg http://worldfamilies/surnames/s/sinton/ http://worldfamilies/surnames/r/rowe/ http://worldfamilies/surnames/f/fairbairn/

Displaying Age on "Details" Window
LornaHenderson replied to Stanza's topic in Older Products and Versions
Stanza, Check out File >Preferences > :rogram options>Tag box. remember to save the layout so that it stays visible -
Jim, I suspect the import from FTM was the key, and I cannot now redo, or even remember, what I did back when I converted a friend's FTM db to TMG for him. I hit exactly this problem, both with having blanks in 'living' flag, and with TMG Utility only doing what it was designed to do <g>, convert ? to N, not blanks. This however would have been 6.12, not v7 and I've not tried again.

My sites are now fully generated from my main TMG database using SecondSite 2, no pre or post processing involved, although there are about 4 new "sites" involved, hopefully seamlessly to the user. The front "window" http://lornahen.com/ with links to "big brother", the main family data http://familytree.lornahen.com/ (and back to the above homepages site, now rebranded as "little sister") The front "window" also links to: - a sub site of original source documents which uses SS2 exhibit galleries http://familytree.lornahen.com/originals/ and only contains a small subset of people - my research diary sub site http://research.lornahen.com/ - an almost fully integrated Rootsweb Guestbook and assorted other goodies I had fun making. PS would be good if you could lose the McIntosh and replace it with Henderson on the main topic for this thread -
I suspect you'll find that this is feature of the new reminder window. I'd guess that you have Reminders set to always show? Personally, I now run with reminders off, only selecting them to show when I'm doing something with lots of roles etc. as I too got caught too often with the date being half typed, and validated before I'd finished. My theory, and I stress theory, is that if TMG was programmed to display the reminder window before the Tag Entry screen when you select a tag that this issue would go away and we could go back to having both reminders AND quick date entry, but I've no idea if that is even possible

Merging Individual
LornaHenderson replied to Jack D. Lovelace's topic in Older Products and Versions
Jack, do you run a layout with the Project Explorer open and have the setting of Link Project Explorer to other windows set? When this happens, did you happen to notice that you have a "ladder" with a blank next to it instead of the name of the merged individual? I agree that maintaining an individual sometimes after a mergefails as you have described, but the only common denominator I've managed to spot, and I cannot replicate it at will, is that for some reason the PE has lost the individual. Until the PE shows the individual again, you will have trouble editting him, and once this has happened it is often best to change the sort order of the PE, or refilter, and if none of them bring him back, you may have to close and reopen TMG. Until it can be replicated consistently, it is rather hard to fix. -
Adding Gedcoms to Projects
LornaHenderson replied to half pint's topic in Older Products and Versions
I'm with Teresa, rekey it. No matter how big a family is that I've a gedcom for, I always rekey the data rather than import someone else's data (and different data entry "standards" or at least conventions), into my prime project. I keep several separate TMG projects by geographical area with other peoples' gedcom data in them, and several focus groups to keep track of where I'm at in checking/entering the data however. Greatly satisfying when you finally delete that last person from the focus group and can say "finished". -
Can anyone reproduce this? I have a text macro set up to contain the UK pound sign, saves mucking around. However, in a memo field, I can only get the macro to work once. So if I need more than one pound sign, I have to either go back to the last one and copy/paste it, or open up the Tools/External Utilities/Character map and select & copy it, or remember the sequence I need to precede the Alt +0163 on my laptop without the numeric keypad. Minor quirk, but definitely quirky! Other text macros seem to be unaffected, but none of those are special characters

text macro only works once in memo
LornaHenderson replied to LornaHenderson's topic in Older Products and Versions
Weird. Ta for taking the time to check Jim. It's been bugging me for several weeks now, so it isn't just a temporary thing. Reboot, restarts etc etc have no effect. Happens consistently for me, first Shift Fx works, subsequent ones don't, for that key only, in the same memo text, unless I close the tag and come back in! -
Sorting List of People report
LornaHenderson replied to John Stark's topic in Older Products and Versions
Looks fine for me for the most common surname in my large project, but even that probably only gave me say 40 of any one forename, surname combination. Removing forename from the sort and leaving it just as surname, date, it still looked fine for the several pages I checked -
How are you trying to transfer? It's been a while since I did this, but TMG6 needs to IMPORT TMG 4 data from either a v4 database or a backup of one. Check out File > Import IF that is what you are doing however, that's back to the experts
-
I've only had a quick look at past postings and can't see this one there, so sorry if it is a repeat.. I wish that the MPL had a column with a tick in it if the place had an exhibit attached, and/or something in the memo field, just like in the Person display screen. I never can remember which particular form of a place name is the one I've written up with a memo, or attached exhibits too. 'twould also be good if there was a count of events using a place without having to open the Events to see (like in the Source list)

Focus Group surname sort order differs to PE list of same group
LornaHenderson posted a topic in Older Products and Versions
I filtered my PE and chose export all to focus group Then started wondering why, even though the numbers were the same in each, I couldn't find some of the people I expected to find. Changing the sort order to ID found they were indeed there, but not where I expected them in either given or surname order. So I started digging around. Found a heap of names sorted out of sequence at the end of each letter, eg after RYDER came RABY .. etc etc, all up some 150 out of my 2294 picklist Attached are some screenshots taken as I "dug". VFI and optimise made absolutely no difference to this, re-entering a forename fixed it, but as they are in the right place in the PE, just not in the Focus group, and the sort name looked just fine as it was anyway.... So I was led to believe that there's a different "engine" behind the sort sequence in the two. I can't, as yet, spot anything obvious all of the "out of sequence" names have in common when I found them by scrolling down the focus group. I can't really tell, but a lot of them look like they were all entered in the last 9 mths. Anyone else noticed this problem? TMG6v12FocusGroupSortOrder.doc -
Focus Group surname sort order differs to PE list of same group
LornaHenderson replied to LornaHenderson's topic in Older Products and Versions
It does seem rather odd, and may be complete coincidence, that a lot of the out of sequence names have two forenames. I was going to say all, but I've found at least 3 that don't by the time I'd checked up to the Hs. Mostly such names would have been added later as name-vars. eg firstly I'd find them under a census as x, enter that as their primary name. Then I'd check them out against birth data etc and add a name-var for the full name and then mark that primary. -
Focus Group surname sort order differs to PE list of same group
LornaHenderson replied to LornaHenderson's topic in Older Products and Versions
Once I'd remembered how to switch to the simple picklist.. No Jim, it looks fine there, filtered or unfiltered (not that I can see that the filter would make any difference, just thought I'd do a like for like comparison)
