Enhancement Request - Last Edit Date
LornaHenderson replied to nbradley's topic in Older Products and Versions
Interesting workarounds, but far too much work for me. I want the last edit date to udpate as it currently does in far more cases than not, and it works just fine for my "recently editted" index on my Second Site generated web pages. It's the few flag only changes that I don't particularly want it to change for. (I always add a mth and year to my citation detail so that I know approximately when I got what info, which is enough for me) -
Enhancement Request - Last Edit Date
LornaHenderson replied to nbradley's topic in Older Products and Versions
It would be icing on the cake if I could select this per flag, but I too would be happy with custom flags in general. The flag changes I'm talking about are things that help me select people for assorted lists, indices, gedcom outputs etc. that aren't changing the base data for the person per se, so to me, aren't really "edits" to the data for the person, yet currently change the last edit date. It has always seemed a little inconsistent to me that you get the option to NOT update the last edit date when doing this via a LOP LOE, but not via the flag window. -
details not displaying in person view for one tag
LornaHenderson posted a topic in Older Products and Versions
attached are screen shots of: Person screen of the principal Open tag for the principal person screen of one of the witnesses I cannot spot anything that makes the details of the tag hidden. I've validated, optimised, closed down tmg, rebooted/reopened tmg Nothing has, as yet, had any effect Can anyone suggest why I'm getting this blank? WillWriterNonDisplay6v12.doc -
details not displaying in person view for one tag
LornaHenderson replied to LornaHenderson's topic in Older Products and Versions
Solved it: Amazing how simple it is when you sleep on something and take a fresh look in the morning. I've just noticed that hovering the mouse over the memo in person view only brought up the very end of the text, not the beginning. Which reminded me that one of the things I did was put sensitivity markers around some of the text, way down near the bottom. Sure enough, although I did have balanced markers around the text I wanted to exclude there was also a stray } instead of ] inside that text which threw it all out and made TMG decide to exclude everything given it had a closing } without an opening one. And given that the first character after the last } was a CR nothing of the memo would show up on screen. All is now well again. Thank you for your time and suggestions, that one was definitely user error or the nut behind the wheel. Interesting that this also made the roles, prinicpal and place data also disappear from display though, not just memo text. Help doesn't hint that everything will disappear, just the marked text Sensitivity Brackets There may be information in your data set that should not be printed for public consumption. This "sensitive information" is surrounded with brackets {like this}. Sensitivity brackets work within a field to isolate specific words or phrases so that they can be omitted from a report. Such information will not be displayed on the Person View but will be visible when you enter the Tag Entry screen. -
details not displaying in person view for one tag
LornaHenderson replied to LornaHenderson's topic in Older Products and Versions
That was my 1st thought Terry, but the place names & role names aren't showing either. There's no CR at the start of any of the place components or the memo, I've been to the start of each field and deleted & reinserted the first character of each to check Languages are unlikely, I stick to one, got myself into too much trouble way back on that one <g> I think it is going to have something to do with the roles, but I can't figure out what. However, what you are saying isn't quite right. When someone is a witness, the Type column shows up as Witness, with the role (if you've set the tag to show the role name) over under the Name/Place column at the start. So for Elizabeth it should be showing Executor; at the start of the Name/Place column followed by the tag type and principal and place of Richard. It was fine in an earlier backup, but I can't remember what all I've done since then in particular to this tag, other than put in more of the will as I've deciphered the writing. -

LornaHenderson replied to nbradley's topic in Older Products and Versions
I strongly support this. If I'm really really determined not to change the last edit date however, I will run a LOP report to set a flag, even if it is for one individual rather than use the flag window, but that's a lot of trouble to go too. -
Gedcom export missing primary birth data
LornaHenderson posted a topic in Older Products and Versions
Hi, I'm trying to work out why some of my birth tags didn't export in the latest gedcom I've uploaded to Rootsweb World Connect. The people are definitely dead, living set to "N" The gedcom setting was for selected tags, primary only, of which Birth was a selected tag, and was primary on the couple of instances I'm looking at. What else should I check? The only thing I can see is that I've a role set to suppress the sentence when generating narratives, but that wouldn't affect a gedcom output would it?? -
Gedcom export missing primary birth data
LornaHenderson replied to LornaHenderson's topic in Older Products and Versions
Ta folks, always nice to know I'm not imagining things. I'll rejig what I was trying to do as I really prefer World Connect to have birth dates, even if they're estimates, so they show up in searches. (Incidentally, when Jim replied to the first message, the forum's automated email response I got in my mail box told me there'd been a reply from Terry, which there wasn't, only Jim) -
Gedcom export missing primary birth data
LornaHenderson replied to LornaHenderson's topic in Older Products and Versions
But not quite the end of my problem. My interpretation of the exclusion rules is that if I then select my gedcom export to SHOW excluded data, I will still get those tags where the sentence starts with a single hyphen. (In my defense for not looking at help, it never occurred to me that what I thought of as a sentence based feature would have any impact whatsoever on Gedcom exports) I've just rerun the export and still didn't get the birth tags concerned. Can anyone replicate this? I'm wondering if the two slightly different help bits might mean a problem of interpretation here. Under Exclude Information. Exclusion marker help says A single Exclusion Marker at the beginning of a Sentence field in any tag, or at the beginning of the Memo field in a Note tag, prevents the printing of that tag and the export of that entire tag to GEDCOM if Show excluded data is not checked. Under GEDCOM Export help says Show Excluded Data ...When this export option is selected, the exclusion marker is ignored and the data is exported. A single exclusion marker at the beginning of a Sentence field in a Note tag prevents the entire tag from being exported unless this option is checked. ie the GEDCOM specific info refers ONLY to NOTE tags (which mine aren't). I can of course rejig what I was trying to do here, which was to output the primary birth data for gedcoms, but use the baptism data for narratives, but now I would like to know how it should work or why it isn't (for me) -
Gedcom export missing primary birth data
LornaHenderson replied to LornaHenderson's topic in Older Products and Versions
Darn (both for not seeing that, and for that being the cause) Ta Jim -
Zane, By "difficult to edit" do you mean hard to see the whole memo? If so, use F7 to enlarge the memo, resizing the resulting window if necessary
-
One advantage important to me is to see at a glance if I already have someone in my database (eg when adding new people from a cenus). And if you expand a family by clicking on the +, you can then see the spice, with full dates And quickly navigate between them by clicking on them in the PE (assuming you have it set to linked to current window)

Master Place List - no F3 repeat available in Comment
LornaHenderson posted a topic in Older Products and Versions
Is it intentional or accidental that F3 repeat isn't available for the Edit Place screen Comment field? It's absence is making it harder than necessary for me to tidy up some of my places when I realise, too late, that having placed a comment on a place I want to appear on my web pages, that there's another place that needs changing to match, but wont merge when I optimise because one has a comment and the other doesn't. -
On the screen or on paper? If the former, open the flag window (Window Menu or click on the Flags icon in the toolbar If the latter have you tried an individual detail report?

Instead of having to change my setup for each and every situation, I'd love to be able to have the tag group rather than just the type, set in the setup. Then at data entry, have a pull down list, like you can get under the Field eg, for the particular tag that applies in the situation you are trying to enter. I don't want to have to set up a sceen with all the different Name-xx tags and scroll past them all the time to the one I want I'd much prefer to have the main Name-Var, but also one other Name group tag where I can set either say a nick name or a standardised name spelling or a married name (if I'm not going to enter the marriage/spouse yet). If this was possible then you could also just set up an Other event group slot and be able to pick Occupation Or Residence Or ... a.n. other that you didn't think of when setting up the setup screen, as required. Other thoughts?

Common Ancestor - how to best link
LornaHenderson replied to MWNelson's topic in Older Products and Versions
Personally, I think that would be confusing where a lot of people exist with the same name in a large database, but I can see where you are coming from. Have you tried customising your layouts so that you have the Project explorer window visible (and linked) when you are entering data? it is very useful to check against that when entering, especially with the ability to expand the line so descendants are visible etc There is an option somewhere that alerts you to the opposite, ie a new or mispelt surname has just been entered, so absence of this means you have got at least one person with this surname <g> -
For one horrible moment today I thought I'd just pushed enter to merge two people incorrectly as I suddenly noticed that I appeared to have two different Deaths for a chappie. Then I realised that the 1855 one was him as a Witness, not the principal. My wishlist item is to make this much clearer on the Merge screen by, eg, showing (W) after the tag type if the person is a witness not a principal

Wishlist - merge screen
LornaHenderson replied to LornaHenderson's topic in Older Products and Versions
no problem Jeff, for a moment I did think that it might be a simple setting I'd overlooked. Glad to know I wasn't missing something. -
Wishlist - merge screen
LornaHenderson replied to LornaHenderson's topic in Older Products and Versions
We must be talking about different things here Jeff. attached is a doc with a couple of screenshots. One is the Other screen of my tag type list for, in this case, my Will tag, showing it is set to show Witness and in the background, is the rhs of the following merge screen It only shows WILL for the chap who was actually only attached as witness. Wishlist - merge screen
LornaHenderson replied to LornaHenderson's topic in Older Products and Versions
Ta for the reply, but did you check that theory out Jeff? I'm reasonably sure that the tag concerned in my example was a standard Death tag, and I have that set at display witnessed tags "as "Witness" and to display roles. Even if I'm wrong, I think it's still a valid wish list, as I'd have to make sure that each and every tag was set up the correct way for that to happen rather than a standard "W" display -
Function Keys Do Not Work As Described

have you tried restarting TMG and/or rebooting? Things like this normally clear themselves after one or both or these actions. -
Freeze when filter PE and change sort order
LornaHenderson posted a topic in Older Products and Versions
This seems to happen rather too often to me so it's probably time I reported it. No doubt as I try stepping thru it to record the actual steps it wont happen this time but here goes... Project Explorer (PE) open & linked Select existing filter from pull down list (in this last case it was filtering for surname x given contains y where I input one name for x and Helen|ellen for y Click on pull down list to change sort order from surname to primary birth date (and sure enough this time it didn't freeze). Last time (and more often than not) at this point everything froze and i had to use check for an update to escape. Which is the normal pattern to this for me -
Stop ABBR Records in GEDCOM
LornaHenderson replied to jonsaunders's topic in Older Products and Versions
Jon, I haven't looked at how to stop the problem at source but have a quick solution for your Rootsweb display (assuming you're talking about World Connect database gedcom upload) On the Advanced version of the upload, down at option 32 there's a place to pop in the tags you don't want displayed, comma separated. I pop REFN in there, you could put ABBR -
I'm going to assume that you know how to attach filters to reports and this is from the Filter tab, not the query by example tab of the filter. To identify end of line bods try: Father* .. is not known AND Mother* .. is not known END My one also has a previous line of Surname contains [?] AND so I can find all those named ? that I've not yet found parents for.

Searching TMG for people by place
LornaHenderson replied to triovlaif's topic in Older Products and Versions
and if you are in the habit of using Witnesses on your events, it may help to also add the line Witnessed Event> Any place field > contains [?]
