  1. Virginia pointed me to the ampersand issue on the GenSmarts board. This has been posted as a TMG bug and is still pending. The only solution to not use the '&' until the character translation in the TMG GenSmarts module is fixed.
  2. For the record, Phil says that another user with the install issue was able to install TMG with no problem after the WinVista KB925902 hotfix was applied on 3 Apr.
  3. Project Explorer

Those are custom census tag types. I use a custom tag type for each Federal census year. Mine are simple and vary somewhat depending on the census year. The head of household is P1. All household members are witnesses. All the census record detail for each household is in the citation detail. Census data goes to a variety of tags as appropriate (Occupation, etc.). I have the census images but they are not linked. I'm a source lumper for census records so have one source per Federal census year. You could also do this by one source for each county per federal census year. If I were to link the census images, I'd likely adopt a splitter approach with a source record for each census household but have no desire to do that. There are dozens of ways that TMG users handle census data ranging from the simple approach that I use to a very complex system initially designed by Diane Begeman years ago and revised by Tami Dolan and others. Also, since those systems were designed, many users have designed other approaches using roles and much more complex sentence structures. Here's a good overview on Terry's website with links to other sites... http://tmg.reigelridge.com/Census.htm
  4. Project Explorer

Two comments. This is true of the Simple Picklist. The Expanded Picklist does show accents. One issue here is that the PE is often refiltered when you are making those edits. It's better to copy those names from the Project Explorer to a new Focus Group. Then clear the PE filter and switch to a layout with the Focus Group rather than the Project Explorer. Work through the FG list making your edits. You can remove each name from the FG after making the edits for that person. This avoids the PE refilter issue. And one last comment... I always have the Project Explorer linked to other windows and see no need to unlink/relink it. If you are going to use the PE for navigation, it needs to be linked.
  5. Master Source List

The Details screen should refresh. You may need to change to another person and back but should not have to do that.
  6. Project Explorer

My default layout includes the Project Explorer and I use it for all top level navigation other than to parents, spouses and children of the focus person. The PE also gives me the big picture of who is in a project. It is convenient for operations like copying to other data sets and creating focus groups. The only time that I ever use the Picklist is when selecting a person with the [binocs] button from various screens.
  7. Mills Source Categories

Mills makes very clear in her book that her source types are examples of many different types of source data that the reader might encounter and they are provided so that the reader can create other source types to deal with variants of the examples or other source types as necessary. One of the points of Mills' book is to educate the reader about source citation. It was never her intention to provide an all-inclusive list of source types. She has added additional source types for online historical sources with her QuickSheet (which has recently been revised). And her forthcoming book, Evidence Expanded: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace, is said to greatly expand the scope of Evidence. And keep in mind that the TMG source templates patterned after the examples in Mills' book are the interpretation of Wholly Genes within the context of how TMG works and are not claimed to be an exact representation of the Mills source type examples nor of Ms. Mills design intentions.
  8. Post has not appeared on a forum

Thanks, Ben. I cleaned up the Web Sites forum and turned on several 'hidden' topics and deleted a couple of others which didn't have anything to do with the purpose of the forum.
  9. My general take on this is that it's not a good practice to use formatting codes in sentence structures. They work best in memo fields, the place Detail field and source templates. I'll ask Terry to look at this when he returns from dinner.
  10. Increase Display and Fonts

Increase the size of the Picklist screen. Also, increase the minimum font size setting.

  12. # of Licenses needed Question

Here's the applicable part of the license agreement. "1. 13. Increase Display and Fonts

That's a common misperception that should not be propagated. You should run your display at the highest resolution available. The more pixels on the screen, the better formed the characters will be and the easier the characters will be to read. If the characters are too small for you, use the system display properties to increase the size of the characters. No one is locked into using the default character size. Both the operating system and TMG have many options to make the display work for you. It's up to you to take advantage of them.
  14. Increase Display and Fonts

    Paul answered that above.
  15. Name-Marr bug

John just said that is by design in SS. Edit the global sentence in TMG. Change: As of [D],>[PP] married name was [N] to: As of [D], >[PP] married name was [N] btw... The reason that I didn't understand is that my default global sentence in TMG does not include the phrase. All of my working projects go back to before this phrase was added. I had to create a new project to see the current default sentence.
  16. Increase Display and Fonts

You can also resize the windows and create new layouts. You can make whatever visual adjustments in TMG that are necessary to make the program comfortable for you to use. Almost everything can be customized.
  17. Name-Marr bug

I have no idea what you are saying. Could you provide an example?
  18. 2nd Marriages

Huh? That's already covered in the above examples by the [PARO] variable. Did you test the output of those sentence structures? Not clear what you are asking.
  19. Editing the Master Place List

The normal path to Master Place List cleanup is... 1) Realign in the MPL (with CTRL+left arrow or CTRL+right arrow) to get all data into the correct columns. Note that this can push several columns of data left or right in one step. 2) When you finish a work session, [Close] the Master Place List and run File / Maintenance / Optimize. This will consolidate identical places automatically. I'm assuming it will take at least several work sessions to get this done. Continue your cleanup with editing or replace (doesn't matter which) to standardize place part names. This will result in more identical places. Run optimize as needed to consolidate these. Eventually, your Master Place List will be all clean and shiny.
  20. Sequence of children in export gedcom

The GEDCOM 5.5 specs say: "The preferred order of the CHILdren pointers within a FAMily structure is chronological by birth." This simple sentence doesn't deal with the complexities of real data where all children do not have birth dates. Note that this did not say that the children should be exported and their individual records ordered chronologically. TMG actually constructs the GEDCOM in the order of the ID numbers since the ID numbers become the INDI numbers in the GEDCOM. And the family record is created with the children in that same order. There must be a method to control child order in the RootsWeb tools. I expect that another RootsWeb user will respond to this issue.
  21. Thanks, Michael. I can't see that this is documented anywhere in help or in GTMOOTMG unless I'm missing it. There is one sentence about the surety setting possibly causing the appearance of an "unknown" value but the reason behind that is not explained. Jim
  22. You are actually allowed to test these things yourself. Apparently not. I believe the highest surety is the one used so that event would be seen as a '1'. And I tested it to confirm.
  23. Other DNA Fingerprint Templates

I need a list of the markers in the 20-marker test and a second list of the markers in the 44-marker test... preferably in the order that they occur on the reports. The document that you posted was of no help. If the information is on their website, it's very well-hidden.
  24. Other DNA Fingerprint Templates

Give me a URL as a reference for that data and I'll create the template and add it to this topic.
  25. Global Fix for Lost Marriage Tags

Philip, For future reference, there is an option using the Advanced Wizard for GEDCOM import to 'Assume marriage of parents' (STEP 5 - GEDCOM Options 1) which would have created the Marriage tags you are 'missing'. You can find such people with a filtered List of People report. Filter # of children > 0 AND # of Marriage Group tags = 0 END This could miss situations where both of the spouses had more than one marriage but should catch most cases. Jim
