  1. I am preparing a descendant chart for a reunion. Currently I am using a Descendant Box Chart with a Left to Right Orientation and it is 2 feet wide by 17 feet high. I tried different orientations but this appears to be the one that makes the smallest chart. However, I will obviously not be able to display a 17 foot high chart. I was trying to set the Page Set-Up to Custom so I could put in page cutmarks at about each 5 feet. However, it appears that when you choose custom, it doesn't let you put in any paper sizes. I would be interested in any suggestions for the following: 1. How to put in Custom paper sizes 2. Can you put in manual cutmarks? 3. Any ideas on different charts I could use that would make my chart more manageable for display. This is a 7 generation chart. Thanks a lot. Pat

  2. Thanks Virginia - I do not use the birth order flag so this is not set. However, when I create the chart this is the order (by birthdate) they appear from top to bottom - I am using a left to right chart. 1850, 1855, 1857, 1860, 1839, 1844, 1845, 1848, 1852. Strange, eh?

If you tell me how to attach images, I can do that when it gets strained out.

  3. Help says about child birth order for reports:

    - Children will appear in the order indicated by the Birth Order flag.

    - If no values have been recorded for that flag, then the birth date will be used, if known.

    - If some children have a Birth Order value, but others do not, then they will be sorted first by Birth Order, then by birth sort date.

So, if you have a birth date for each child - and none of them has a Birth Order flag value set, they should appear in birth date order in the chart. Do any of the children have their Birth Order Flag value set?

Examples of user charts are especially welcome on the forum - so let me know if you'd like to share your chart and need help attaching an image.

This is a chart to accompany a Family Group Sheet. It starts with a portion of a 3-generation descendant chart of the father of the focus person James J. Whipple. Boxes for for the parents of his spouse Sally Johnson were copied and pasted from a 2-generation descendant chart of her father Shadrach Johnson.

The groups of boxes were edited and arranged to fit on the center of the page and gray rectangles were drawn around each group to further delineate them. The white triangle to the right of William J. Whipple identifies the line of interest that is carried on. This triangle graphic was copied and pasted from my Palette (boilerplate) chart.

For how to draw the connecting lines from the parent boxes to the focus person, see the message here.

    -------------------------------

    VIDEO: Creating and using rectangles.

Click on the Rectangle icon on the Drawing toolbar.

Draw a rectangle around the group of boxes.

Note the rectangle now covers the boxes with its own white foreground.

Rightclick on the rectangle, select Properties and tick the box for Foreground: Transparent.

Click on the Line tab and make the line Gray.

Fine-tune the position or size of the rectangle.

If you want to to color the rectangle foreground behind the chart boxes:

Select the rectangle, rightclick Properties and untick Foreground: Transparent.

Select a foreground color of gray. Use the Color Lookup Table to make the foreground color a lighter shade of gray.

To position the gray rectangle behind the group of boxes, rightclick, select Order and 'Send to Back.'

  5. In TMG / Preferences / Reports / do you have your 'Preferred output types' selected?

On the Report Definition Screen / Properties, do you have a specific printer selected - rather than default? If not, select a printer. TMG requires a printer driver to format a report to screen.

Do you have a printer attached to the computer or is this a laptop?

What is the path where you are saving the report?

After you create the report, do you see the report in your taskbar (icon is white with red letters RR, and name of report)?

(Tip for showing screenshots: download the free Jing software from techsmith.com; follow the instructions to take the screenshot and post it on Screencast. Then insert the link they give you into your message.)

Virginia, Thank you for your help - setting up the dummy port worked. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but we were without power due to the recent snow. It may be a coincidence but since I set up the Acrobat reader, anytime I click on the "Add a Person" icon on the Standard Toolbar, the program locks up completely. I have uninstalled and reintstalled the program but it continues. All the other icons work fine as does the drop down menu of add a person. Seems very strange that this would be related to the Acrobat reader..... Thanks to both you and Jim for your help.

  6. Jim, Thanks for your quick reply. These are the steps that I try to see the report on the screen. I set the report parameters, set "print preview", click on create report. I can see the report generating - for example, it says there are 144 events in my "list of events" report. It says the screen will close automatically in 4 seconds - when it does close, nothing appears on the screen. Now I tried your suggestion and went to File and installed the PDF printer and then created a report and said Save to Acrobat (PDF) but I now get this message. Hmm - how do I insert a screen shot in this message that I saved as a jpg?

  7. I am running V7.04 with Vista on a 64 bit machine. I cannot view any reports at all in any mode - can't see print preview, print or to a document or PDF. The report is generated but when I try to see it any of these modes, I get nothing or a Conversion Error message. I have done a repair and I also have done a reinstall with no results. I have read the forums and see that others have had problems but I haven't see that people can't get any three of the modes (print preview, print, or to a document) to work. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is quite limiting. Thanks.
