  1. AE optional report selection

Thanks Jim and Mike, I realized the difference between AE and A. Just wanted to make sure I did not miss some option on reports to interpret AE as an A. Similar to print Memos, Select place fields, Include IDs, etc. Joe
  2. Install on two PCs

V8 W7. Currently have V8 on my "home" W7 PC. Will need to spend some time at son's house in a few weeks. Since I am in the process of adding a large number of sources to my database, would like to use the time at his place to continue the work. Also, begin the task of updating/adding tags based on the new sources. I do not have a laptop. (1) I have reread the license info. It appears that I could install V8 on his PC (W7) as a second PC. Is this correct? (2) If (1) is ok, then here are the steps I see to accomplish my goal to continue source updating (including tag reference to sources). (a) Backup my home PC TMG data. ( After installing V8 on son's PC, import the home backup file to son's V8, TMG. NOTE: All my exhibits are external on another disk (e.g., "E"). When I do my home backup's, I do not backup external files. Since the work I intend to be doing on the son's PC does not involve exhibits, can I import the home backup and do my work without concern about "missing" exhibits? © When done on the second PC, I would generate a backup file (no external exhibits) and upon return home import that file on the home PC. Again, the question is, will this work including recognition of the external exhibit folder on the home PC TMG? Thanks, Joe
  3. Install on two PCs

Hi Terry, Thanks for the reply. Guess I will go ahead and do the steps except RESTORE Not Import! Joe
  4. External Exhibit Paths

In TMG 7, I set up the following paths for my external exhibits. First level: E:\TMG exhibits\ Second level: hardcopy\ and imagespeople\ and imagesother\ and audio\ Third level (e.g, For the second level "imagespeople" folder): family1\ and family2\ and family3\ Fourth level: (e.g.For each of the Third level families folder): tif01, tif02 To place tif01 in a person's exhbit, I would open that person's exhibit log and "add". Then select the image at E:\TMG exhibits\imagespeople\family2\tif01. I did not check the paths properties so assumed all ok since the image appeared in the person's exhibit log. After installing TMG 8, I have not looked at the exhibit paths nor my TMG exhibits folder for some time. Just looked at the first level folder and all images still in the correct sub-folders. The new situations is that all the images in all the sub-folders under "imagespeople" are duplicated in the "imagespeople" folder. In addition, the paths for all the images in the exhibit logs refer to the duplicated images. Not the ones in the family sub-folders. The TMG V8 "current project option, exhibit folder" is set to: E:\TMG exhibits\imagespeople. Should have been the same in V7 but do not remember. Any idea what may have caused the duplication and the exhibit log path change (I assumed in V7 the path to the sub-folder was used)? Also, any suggestion as to how to change the exhibit log path back to the sub-folders? I have close to 1000 such images that are affected. Joe
  5. External Exhibit Paths

Jim, Did not realize VFI would find the folders. When I completed the long "Load" approach, I ran VFI again because I knew I had missed some. It was then I saw that the missed ones were found. You are right, it would have saved me a lot of work!
  6. External Exhibit Paths

Virginia, Did find the "Load" function in the Exhibit Log and have spent the day correcting all the links. Will not try to Backup/Resotre external files. Have laearned the hard way! Thanks. Bryan, Will look at PathWiz to see what it can do....sounds interesting. Joe
  7. External Exhibit Paths

Virginia, I guess that is what caused my "problem". Thanks for the information. The only reasonable way I can see to return to linking the multi-folders to the exhibit log images is to find in TMG where the path is defined for each image and add in the multi-folders in the path. Any idea if this is possible and what the file name(s) would be. The worst case would be to delete the current log images and re-add them to the logs......very time consuming. Thanks again, Joe
  8. Listings in the person window: Marriage c 1977 #1 Divorce c 1981 #1 Marriage c 1982 #2 Divorce c 1983 #2 * Marriage 20 mar 1988 #3 All is ok for reports; however, in the sibling window the Spouse is given as #2. The sort dates for #1 and 2 events are "01 jan (year in the M/D tag)". Same is true if tag changed from "c" to "s". Checked V7 and same thing (never noticed it before). Using V8.0.2. Any ideas!
  9. Printing Charts - Ancestor or Descendant

Robin, I am on Win 7 Premium Home and the chart is a VC2 file. File>Page Setup; there is no printer button. The only non-specific page size selection is "user defined". Selecting that simply returns me to the VCF display. No page size selection nor change in chart page markers. Start Menu>Control Panel>Device and Printers: showed my normal printer Epson 1100 as default. Changed default to Adobe PDF ok. Open the VCF chart. File>Page Setup and still only "user defined" and when selected results in same situation. Rechecked default printer and still Adobe PDF. Did a restart and same results. Did a print preview and still the original page marker output. Went to "Print" and it shows my Epson printer not Adobe PDF. Can select Adobe PDF as printer and has a page size option of "Postscript Custom Page" which then allows me to specify a size; however, that pertains to the printing not the VCF page size. Opened Word and selected print. It came on with Adobe PDF as my printer. Appears that VCF is not recognizing the default printer selection.
  10. Printing Charts - Ancestor or Descendant

Virginia, In your reply above relative to the Ottawa TMG Users Group article. I followed the instructions to set the paper size in VCF. FILE-->PAGE SETUP-->select the "Paper Size" drop-down menu-->Select "user defined"-->Click OK. Nothing comes up to let me set the dimensions. If I select any other option in the drop down menu, the paper size does change and the page markers move for the new page size dimension. Should I not see a dimension option for "user defined"? Using TMG V 8.0.2 and VCF V 3.2 build date Sep 1, 2007 3.2.0.13 (gold). Thanks, Joe
  11. Spouse on Sibling window.

Michael, Never knew that!! Tried your solution and works great. Will have to put that in my TMG notes. Thank you, Joe C
  12. My V7 lat/long format (there was no choice) is 424748N0735541W. Restored project to V8. When I list places and include the lat/long column, the format is 42.47639-79.4671. (not same location as shown in last sentence). I have gone into V8 preferences and tried several of the formats available and it makes no difference in the place listing nor in other reports. If my V7 format is the same in the V8 tags, does V8 reformat the lat/long values to my preference for reports? Does it reformat my preference in the tags? I cannot check the tag content due to a problem in accessing tags.
  13. Lat/Long Format Incorrect.

Michael, Thanks for the explaination. Good information. I'll wait to see if the report writer supports it some. Joe
  14. Have installed and restored my project ok. By ok the external exhibits, tag content (as per tag list), custom tag sentences ok and so on. When I click on an exisiting tag for a person (e.g., marriage tag for person X) I get the "cue card" tag and "continue cue card". When I finish responding, the windows close and cannot do anything more. The tag window does not show. Cannot select tags, other people, etc. Must CAD to close TMG. Any ideas?
  15. V8 freezes on tag select.

Ran the follwing test to see if could get more info. (1) Open TMGV8 (no tips ...ok) (2) On toolbar, select add then tag. Get list of all the tag types. (3) Selected burial. No cue cards...ok. The reminder tag window for the burial tag came up but no other window. (4) Closed the reminder window and machine forze. (5) CAD, highlite the TMG program and click on end task. (6) Immediately get TMG window asking if I want to backup ....sample__.pc. Several seconds later another window appears noting TMG not responding. (7) I click no to the TMG "backup" window. TMG immediately closes. The end task window shows that TMG has been removed from the list of running tasks. Not sure if this helps but thought I should document this event.
  16. V8 freezes on tag select.

Hello Virginia, I turned cue cards and tips turned off. Closed and opened tmg. Clicked on a tag in the sample project....no cue cards...and it forze.
  17. Lat/Long Format Incorrect.

Jim, "converted to digital format". Not sure what this means. Does the term mean degrees(period)fraction of a degree like you show in your reply? "Preferences option just for viewing". Does this exclude the ability to select a format for presentation in reports? I may be wrong, but I think most people are used to see degree, minutes, seconds, two digit fraction of seconds from GPS and Garmin like mapping tools.
  18. V8 freezes on tag select.

Jim, thanks for your response. First off, the sample project reacts the same way when I try to select any tag in the details panel.....hangs the app. I tried your suggestion with the sample project. On the toolbar Add->add tag. Click on any tag and I get the reminder window but nothing else. Close the reminder window and all else looks like it works ok. There is no "freeze". To sum up, your suggestion does not freeze the operation; however, do not get the tags window only the reminder.
  19. Windows 7 Home. tmg8setup.exe downloads ok. Open the exe and get the "do you want to run" message. Reply yes. Get the "select language" message. Reply ok. The progress bar runs up to the 30-40% value within seconds then an "Advanced Installer" window message appears: "This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package". Reply ok and install ends. There is no TMG V8 folder built on C drive. 1. Turned off Norton and same failure. I have V7.40 installed but not the V8 Beta. 2. Have unblocked the security setting in file properties. 3. Run as Administrator. None of the above corrected things. Any ideas.
  20. V7 and Windows 7 Home. Death tag sentence: [RF:Deceased] died <[DD]> <[L]> <at age [AE]>. <The cause of death was listed as [M1]>. <Contributing factors were [M2]>. <[M3]>. Sentence resolved as: Elizabeth died on Mon. 23 Nov 2911 in Highland Farms Retirement Home, 200 Tabernacle Road, Black Mt., Buncombe, North Carolina, USA, 28711, 828 669-9654, 353649N0822101W, 2342 at age 1001 years, 4 months and 9 days... She died at 10AM. Memo: |||She died at 10 AM. What is the cause of the incorrect age (1001) and extra periods (... Dhe died at 10AM.). The lady was over 101 years of age.
  21. Sentence structure and AE variable

Thanks to both of you for your responses. I am embarrassed to have not seen the wrong date I entered in the death tag! Corrected it to 2011 and all ok. Regarding the periods. It has been some time since I worked on sentence structures. Thanks for pointing out the conditional brackets and period positioning. All ok now.
  22. I am cleaning up my Place data. I would like to add some new places for future use while doing this (no tag using these new places yet). Is there any way to accomplish the task? Does not look like the Master Place List provides this function.
  23. Add to Master Place List

Thanks Jim and Michael for your responses. I have been building a Word document with all the place detail columns and wanted to transfer the data to "empty tag" place records. I find it easier to collect the data as complete (in number) first rather than go back into a search mode for data as the need (tag) is required. May just keep building the word document and just transfer data to existing tags. Michael, did not know about the ability to prevent unused places being deleted by Optimize. My concern there is will this be still valid in V8? Will wait and see!
  24. My basic question is "how accurate must an audio to text transcription be to meet an acceptable level for genealogy record purposes?" When I do a transcription now, I try to make it exactly like the audio record. The only editing I do is to eliminate the start/end clicks of the record, eliminate background noise (e.g., telephone ring or clock chimes) if possible and long pauses. I have a legend to show on the transcript special items; such as, interviewers comments, words spelled out, interviewee comments not directly pertinent to the interview, unintelligible words/phrases, clarifications in a post interview conversation, etc. Items I leave in are: coughing (noted as not pertinent); extraneous words (e.g., "ah", "I went we went they went to....", "it was in November...no December", "you don't say" (a group interview comment on someone else telling a story), and so on. I talked with someone who does medical transcriptions. She does eliminate the above examples and even corrects in the transcript mistakes made in the audio content by the dictator or getting the proper spelling and pronounciation. She said this has been legally approved for medical transcriptions. I would like to follow her methods and wonder if it would meet acceptable genealogy transcription needs. I would like to even go in and "clean-up" the audio record but that is probably not the correct thing to do. Any opinons or comments? Thanks, Joe
  25. Goal: In one tag, have two mutually exclusive conditional sentences to be selected by the presence of one or both roles in the sentence then end with a common series of conditional text. Set up: Tag Name: childpar (Other Event) Roles: paP, paPO, prP, prPO, achW, rchW, Sentence for P (new line for purposes of showing the sentences only) : <[R:paP] <and [R:paPO]> adopted [R:achW]> <[R:prP] <and [R:prPO]> raised [R:rchW]> <[D]><[L]>.<[M]> Desired results (based on role name assignment producing the resulting sentence structure interpreted for substitution): (1) roles assigned names: paP, paPO and achW (remaining roles have an ID of 0) [R:paP] and [R:paPO] adopted [R:achW]. <[D]><[L]>.<[M]> (2) roles assigned names: paP and achW (remaining roles have an ID of 0) [R:paP adopted [R:achW]. <[D]><[L]>.<[M]> (3) roles assigned names: prP and rchW (remaining roles have an ID of 0) [R:prP] raised [R:rchW]. <[D]><[L]>.<[M]> In other words, can I nest conditional brackets. I tried a test but it appears that the outer brackets were interpreted as text. Is there another way to accomplish the goal?
