  1. I am using the Gold UK edition of TMG v8 and have File/Language set to English UK. I want to change the sentence structure of some of the built-in tags. I go to Tools/Master Tag Type List and choose Edit for a tag in question. The Language is set to English UK in the Tag Type Definition box, which seems reasonable, but the sentence boxes are all blank. The default sentences only appear when I set the language to English US in the Tag Type Definition box. Is this a bug?
  2. Saving custom tag types

Got it! Thanks Terry - I was merging the other way round, with the resulting loss of custom tags. Following your instructions all is well, albeit kludgy in Mike's words. Roll on v8! Thanks Mike, Jim and Terry for your help. Keith
  3. Saving custom tag types

Thanks Mike and Jim. I have tried both methods and they don't work for me. I get as far as an empty dataset with the customs tag types, and everything is fine if I then start adding persons by typing in data. But I need to import the data. As soon as I do that (via import gedcom and choosing to add to the current project) then the custom tag types disappear from the master tag type list. The only way round it that I have found is not to import into an empty dataset, but to have a fictitious person that uses all the custom tag types, and then to merge the two datasets after importing the new data. That seems to preserve the custom tags. What a performance though!! Keith
  4. Saving custom tag types

Sorry for what is most likely a dumb question. I have created a number of custom tag types in a project that I would like to be able to use in a new project. However, when I create a new project, the master tag type list reverts to the default. Is there any way of saving my custom tag types so that they are available to the new project? Thanks, Keith
  5. Gedcom import - prefixes and suffixes

Many thanks, John and Michael, for the very helpful and detailed replies. The originating program for the GEDCOM is Reunion for Mac. Unfortunately there are no output options that will trigger one or the other of the two options described in the standard. I have brought this to the attention of Leister Productions, and hopefully they will consider this issue as part of a future upgrade. In the meantime, I will just have to roll up my sleeves…… Thanks again
  6. Gedcom import - prefixes and suffixes

Many thanks for the reply Jim. That's disappointing news as I have a lot of prefixed and suffixed entries in the GEDCOM that use the NAME tag. It is a pity that TMG can't import the hybrid form, as it is clearly able to parse the NAME tag into given and surname parts. That's life...
  7. I am trying to import from a Gedcom in which some of the names have prefixes and suffixes. A typical entry in the Gedcom file is: 1 NAME Hedworth /WILLIAMSON/ 2 NSFX 5th Bart 2 NPFX Sir The TMG import wizard has an option "Read NPFX / GIVN / SURN / NSFX names". If I leave this unchecked, then the given name and surname are imported correctly, but the prefixes and suffixes are missing. On the other hand, if I check this option, the prefixes and suffixes are imported correctly, but the given name and surname are not, with the resulting person being called Sir (-) (-) 5th Bart. I would appreciate any advice on what I need to do to be able to import both the names and the prefixes/suffixes. Many thanks, Keith
  8. Fails to backup to networked drive

Panic over - a compete reboot of all systems local and remote seems to have cleared the problem......
  9. Can anyone help with this problem please? I have set up TMG v7.03 so that all my data files are on a networked drive which I have mapped to drive Z:. Preferences have been set so that all the relevant directories point to this drive. It has read-write permissions set. TMG runs fine with this set up - I can open a project file on Z:, make modifications, close the file, reopen it and all the modifications are there and the timestamp on the various files shows that TMG is writing to Z: without a problem. However, if I try to make a backup from the File/Backup menu then I get the message "Drive z: is not accessible" and the backup aborts. It seems to be an issue to do with locating the project file; if I leave the 'select project' field blank it quite happily backs up the customisations to Z:. The current project box is ticked and it has filled in the location of the current project correctly, and the drive is accessible because the project itself is of course loaded into TMG at the time of the attempted backup. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug? Thanks, Keith
  10. I am finding the following bug in generating a descendant indented report: - I clear all text in the text box Options.Miscellaneous.Living Text, and save settings, but on going back to the report the textbox refills with "is still living". This happens regardless of whether I check or uncheck "Suppress details for living people" I haven't checked the other reports. Is this a known bug?
  11. A Tagless Event Mystery

Brilliant!! Many, many thanks Teresa - you have spared me hours trying to find a workaround. I had tried optimisation to no avail, but not VFI, and the two together have done the trick. The hitherto tagless events have now been given a GEDCOM tag - some turn out to be real events like baptisms and others are spurious links to other names. The origin of the problem was almost certainly the oiginal import from FTM, so the lesson learnt is ALWAYS to do VFI and optimisation after an import. Thanks again, Keith
  12. A Tagless Event Mystery

Thanks Virginia, but everything looks fine in the Master list with various combinations of deactivated/LDS tag options. The data originally came from a FTM import, so I can only think the indexing is screwed up in places. I'm happy to input data by hand for anything that hasn't been imported correctly, but I still need a way of deleting these tagless events, unfortunately, as they mess up the narrative reports.
  13. A Tagless Event Mystery

In doing some reorganising of tag labels and events on the Details screen, I appear to have achieved the unlikely outcome of creating an event without any corresponding tags to describe it. It disappears from the Details screen but shows up in narrative reports as a spurious blank space punctuated by a full stop when listing all events. If I do a List Events report, with Tag Type Label as an output column, then the event is listed but the Tag Type Label is blank. Without a label it doesn't appear in the Details screen or the Master Events screen for editing so I am unable to delete it. Has anyone come across anything like this and is there any way around it? Any advice would be much appreciated.
  14. Blank default sentence structure

That's brilliant! Many thanks Terry - it works just as you describe in your article. I can now see the default sentences with English (UK) selected. Years ago if we didn't want to call something a "bug" we called it a "feature". I guess this is a feature, at least in v. 6.09 UK Edition. Thanks again, Keith
  15. Blank default sentence structure

Many thanks Les for pointing me in the right direction - it is a language issue, but I can't say I understand the logic. If I set the language to English (US) in File>Language then in Roles & Sentences the language is shown as English (US) and the default sentence structure shows up OK - change the language from the pick menu in that window to English (UK) and the sentence structure disappears. On the other hand, if I set the language to English (UK) in File>Language (not unreasonable for a UK Edition) then in Role & Sentences the language is shown as English (UK) but the sentence structure is blank - however, change the language from the pick menu in that window to English (US) and the default sentence structures appear. SO to make the program behave properly it seems that I have to EITHER set the language to English (US) in File>Language, OR if I set it there to English (UK) I have to choose English (US) in the Roles & Sentences window to see the default sentence! Is it just me or does that sound like a bug? Keith
