=== Conference/Cruise News =================

This year's Genealogy Conference and Cruise (Oct 26-Nov 2) is filling up and we don't want you to miss the event of the year!

Here's a word of caution to those who have expressed an intention to wait until next year's cruise: there may not be one! While the conference/cruise is always a sell-out and we have great fun, we're considering taking a break next year -- or organizing an event that may not involve a cruise. Don't say that we didn't warn you .

So don't miss this chance to take an inexpensive Caribbean cruise while you learn from the TMG experts (including Bob Velke, John Cardinal, Jim Byram, Lee Hoffman) and our unrivaled list of professional genealogists, including Elizabeth Shown Mills, Barbara Vines Little, John Grenham (Ireland), John Titford (England), Tony Burroughs, Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak, Craig Scott, Cyndi Howells, David Allen Lambert, Robert Charles Anderson, Sandra Hewlett, and Dick Eastman.

For as little as $846 per person (including food but not transportation to/from the ship) you'll get a Caribbean vacation, a full-fledged genealogy conference that rivals even most land-based conferences, and unparalleled access to the TMG developers, support staff, and experts, as well as hundreds of other like-minded researchers. Your spouse and other family members will find lots of interesting things to do on board and then you'll have uninterrupted vacation time with them on the tropical ports of St. Kitts, Antigua, St. Thomas, and San Juan. It is a great learning experience and a vacation that you will never forget!

=== New Data CDs from the U.S. ==============

The following new data CDs from the U.S. are now available from WhollyGenes.com:

James N. Arnold, VITAL RECORD OF RHODE ISLAND. 1636-1850. FIRST SERIES, BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS. A FAMILY REGISTER FOR THE PEOPLE, SIX VOLUMES, (1891-1894) 2008.

$27.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0322.

This set of volumes provides a complete transcription of surviving birth, marriage and death records for all towns in the five counties of Rhode Island, from the earliest days through 1850. The entries are arranged by county, then by town, then by record type, with citations to the original sources. (more...)

THE DEDHAM HISTORICAL REGISTER, 14 VOLUMES, (1890-1903) 2008.

$27.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0351

Of the many local genealogical and historical journals published in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, The Dedham Historical Register was one of the best. Since Dedham had spawned all or parts of fourteen other towns, the scope of this journal is far greater than the title indicates. This periodical included a wide range of articles, including especially compiled genealogies of Dedham families and transcripts of original records, including birth, death and marriage records and inscriptions from cemeteries. The genealogies were prepared in standard Register format. The journal also published diaries, as well as biographies and obituaries of prominent citizens of Dedham and its daughter towns. Also included are articles on historical events of the area, discussions of old buildings, and the participation of Dedham men in various wars of the colonial period and later. (more...)

D. Hamilton Hurd, compiler, HISTORY OF MIDDLESEX COUNTY, MASSACHUSETTS, WITH BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF MANY OF ITS PIONEERS AND PROMINENT MEN, 3 VOLUMES, (1890) 2008.

$29.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0278

This three-volume set provides first a history of Middlesex County, Massachusetts, as a whole, and then proceeds systematically through all fifty-four cities and towns in the county, setting forth extensive historical, biographical, and genealogical information for each of these municipalities. (more...)

VIRGINIA AND VIRGINIANS, 2 VOLUMES, (1888) 2008.

$14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0368

This two-volume history focuses on individual Virginians and is replete with sketches of local individuals (see list of localities at the end of this description), detailing not only theirs and their wife’s and children’s places and dates of birth, but often providing information on previous generations and places of origin. These sketches are rich in information helpful in both scaling “brick walls” and adding depth to the story of one’s ancestors (and the ability to search the full document means the reader won’t miss information). (more...)

John Fiske, OLD VIRGINIA AND HER NEIGHBORS, 2 VOLUMES, (1900) 2008.

$14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0376

All too often histories leave us with little understanding of the history of “average” citizens and how (except in time of war) they interacted with either their government or society as a whole. Although chastised by some of his reviewers for breaking up his history with the interspersion of social commentary, researchers will find many of his digressions provide valuable insight into everyday life of the colonial Virginian. And, by using the search capabilities in this PDF version they will be able to compile information on specific aspects of society.

Written as a part of a series on early American history, Fiske’s two-volume history, Old Virginia and Her Neighbors covers the period from Sir Walter Raleigh’s first excursions to 1753 and the beginning of the French and Indian War. Although the title includes Virginia’s neighbors, the author notes that he allocates only 107 pages to Maryland, 67 pages to the Carolinas and a page to Georgia. The focus both here and in his comparisons with New England is a better understanding of Virginia’s place in history. (more...)

Royall Bascom Smithey, HISTORY OF VIRGINIA, (1898) 2008.

$4.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0389

Compressing over 300 years of history into a small volume, while at the same time making it interesting to school children is an arduous task. This textbook, published in 1898, does an admirable job of pulling together in a readable format, the major events in Virginia’s history. Among items of special interest are the three chronological tables of important events that follow the three sections of the book—14921763, 17631860 and 18601898. There is also a list of the 52 colonial governors giving the date they took office and indicating whether they were a lieutenant governor. The list of 48 Commonwealth governors includes their political affiliation and the date and place of their birth and death. A large colored map of Virginia showing the counties and county seats as well as major roads and rivers is another useful tool. (more...)

Spencer Ellsworth, RECORDS OF THE OLDEN TIME; OR FIFTY YEARS ON THE PRIARIES EMBRACING SKETCHES OF THE DISCOVERY, EXPLORATION, AND SETTLEMENT OF THE COUNTRY, THE ORGANIZATION OF THE COUNTIES OF PUTNAM AND MARSHALL, INCIDENTS AND REMINISCENCES CONNECTED THEREWITH..., (1880) 2008.

$14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0602

Previously hidden in this over 750-page unindexed volume (but now accessible via this searchable text version) are the names and origins of numerous settlers of Putnam and Marshall County, Illinois. Published in 1880, its author proposed “to trace the early settlement of that portion of our State embraced in the counties of Putnam and Marshall, gathering up the forgotten records of each township and neighborhood, and telling for the benefit of their descendants the story . . . of their ancestors.” Part of the military land tract granted to veterans of the War of 1812 lay in present Putnam and Marshall counties and obviously drew many of the settlers to the area.
