=== NEW: Family History Hosting =================

To most TMG users, John Cardinal is a household name. He is the developer of the very-popular Second Site web site construction tools, a helpful database modification tool called TMG Utility, and a calendar and anniversary utility called On This Day. Now John has announced a new project that is sure to earn the same reputation for quality and value. The following is his announcement:

From: John Cardinal

I am pleased to announce a new web hosting service, Family History Hosting.

Family History Hosting is designed for genealogists and family historians and should be of particular interest to any Second Site user who publishes a site on the web. It is a fee-based service with prices that are similar to other web hosting services. My goal is to give great service at a reasonable price.

I created Family History Hosting in partnership with a premium-level web hosting service who provides the data center, operating system, and networking know-how.

Any Second Site customer who purchases a web hosting package will receive 3 months of service free. For a limited time, and while supplies (of time!) last, I am also offering a special "Get Started" technical support session that is designed to help customers get their web sites online. This free offer includes an exchange of email messages to determine where you are and what help you need, and then a two-hour telephone call during which I will use a remote control program to access your PC to install and configure any software you need.

Where else can you get two hours of support from an expert when you purchase a web hosting plan?

Family History Hosting is not restricted to Second Site users, but over time I plan to introduce features in Second Site that will correspond to features of the Family History Hosting service. Specifically, I plan to introduce a "refresh site" feature that will upload files to your web site without using an FTP client.

You can read more about Family History Hosting here:

http://www.familyhistoryhosting.com

If you decide to become a customer, please contact me directly via mailto:Sales@FamilyHistoryHosting.com before you enter an order. I will provide some advice about what options to select based on your particular circumstances, and we can schedule your "Get Started" support session. Even if you do not need a "Get Started" session or advice about which options to select, please contact me before you order.

In case you were wondering, when you publish your site via Family History Hosting, you use your own domain name and your pages will not include any advertising unless you put it there.

=== New Data CDs from the U.S. ==============

The following new data CD is now available from WhollyGenes.com:

Bishop Davenport, A NEW GAZETTEER OR GEOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY OF NORTH AMERICA AND THE WEST INDIES, (1838) 2008.

$12.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...WS&p=US0350

Gazetteers can be useful tools providing researchers with the location of long extinct places or descriptions of what still extant places were like at an earlier time. They also frequently contain additional items of interest in the hope of enticing purchases. Davenport's Gazetteer includes lists of current benevolent societies, colleges, theological and medical schools and British slave colonies in the West Indies as well as lists of principle roads with the mileage between towns and routes of steamboats and principle canals and railroads (finished or in progress) giving their length and consequently allowing us to determine whether they might have served as a migration route for our ancestors. (more...)

A large hand-colored map of the United States and portions of Canada and Mexico is also included.

ALPHABETICAL INDEX OF MAINE VOLUNTEERS, ETC., MUSTERED INTO THE SERVICE OF THE UNITED STATES DURING THE WAR OF 1861 (SUPPLEMENT TO THE ANNUAL REPORTS OF THE ADJUTANT GENERAL OF THE STATE OF MAINE FOR THE YEARS 1861, '62, '63, '64, '65 AND '66), (1867) 2008.

This publication of the State of Maine Adjutant General's office sets forth the names of tens of thousands of men who volunteered for or were drafted for service in the Civil War, along with a shorter list of those drafted in 1863 who furnished substitutes or paid a commutation to avoid service. (more...)

1899 DIRECTORY OF PORTLAND [MAINE] AND VICINITY, COMPLETE STREET DIRECTORY, MAP OF THE CITY AND VICINITY, (1899) 2008.

$14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0378-DL

This turn-of-the-century directory for the city of Portland, Maine, gathers in one place a wide range of residential, occupational, and financial information about the inhabitants of that municipality, combined with additional data on its businesses, civic organizations, and government agencies. (more...)

William H. Whitmore, ed., THE COLONIAL LAWS OF MASSACHUSETTS. REPRINTED FROM THE EDITION OF 1672, WITH THE SUPPLEMENTS THROUGH 1686., (1890) 2008.

John F. Watson, ANNALS AND OCCURRENCES OF NEW YORK CITY AND STATE, IN THE OLDEN TIME; BEING A COLLECTION OF MEMOIRS, ANECDOTES, AND INCIDENTS CONCERNING THE CITY, COUNTRY, AND INHABITANTS..., (1846) 2008.

F. Johnston, MEMORIALS OF OLD VIRGINIA CLERKS; ARRANGED ALPHABETICALLY BY COUNTIES, WITH COMPLETE INDEX OF NAMES, AND DATES OF SERVICE FROM 1634 TO THE PRESENT TIME, (1888) 2008.

$19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0380-DL

Tracking previously published information on Virginia families can be an arduous task and few would think to consult Memorials of Old Virginia Clerks. Although the title indicates that there is a complete index to names, this refers to the names of the clerks. None of the family members and other individuals mentioned in the text are indexed. Consequently, the ability to conduct an every word search is extremely helpful, since some of the biographies reference numerous family members. (more...)

Royall Bascom Smithey, HISTORY OF VIRGINIA, (1898) 2008.

$4.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0389-DL

Compressing over 300 years of history into a small volume, while at the same time making it interesting to school children is an arduous task. This textbook, published in 1898, does an admirable job of pulling together in a readable format, the major events in Virginia's history. Among items of special interest are the three chronological tables of important events that follow the three sections of the book—14921763, 17631860 and 18601898. There is also a list of the 52 colonial governors giving the date they took office and indicating whether they were a lieutenant governor. The list of 48 Commonwealth governors includes their political affiliation and the date and place of their birth and death. A large colored map of Virginia showing the counties and county seats as well as major roads and rivers is another useful tool. (more...)

Lewis Preston Summers, ANNALS OF SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA (1769-1800), (1929) 2008.

$24.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0346-DL

The student of early southwest Virginia history can find no better beginning point than Summers' Annals. The bulk of this over 1000-page compilation focuses on abstracts of court minutes and early surveys which often mention early settlers who left no trace in wills and deeds. Although the stated area covered is the area south of the James River and west of the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Cumberland Gap, court records (Botetourt and Fincastle) include Kentucky until 1777 when Kentucky County was established and southern West Virginia to 1778 when Greenbrier County was established. The records continue to include the southeastern counties of West Virginia that were a part of Montgomery and Wythe counties to 1800; however, it should be noted that there are no extant court minutes for Wythe County for 17911794. Washington County court minutes from the establishment of the county in 1777 to 1787 are also available. (more...)

John W. Williams, INDEX TO ENROLLED BILLS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, 1776 TO 1910, (1911) 2008.

$29.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0341-DL

Long out of print and virtually unknown, this index provides access to a major source of information for post colonial Virginia -- the public and private laws of the Commonwealth. While many will find the private laws - those that granted divorce, established a pension for a veteran who didn't qualify under current law, paid individuals for goods and services, allowed a free Negro to remain in Virginia contrary to law or provided relief to individuals who sought exemption or special treatment in regard to everything from inheritance to an inconveniently placed road, others will find the ability to track the changes in tax or inheritance law, the requirements regarding militia duty (more...)

Percy G. Skirven, THE FIRST PARISHES OF THE PROVINCE OF MARYLAND, (1923) 2008.

$14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0614-DL

Tracking the establishment of parishes and churches in order to determine where to look for records can often be a frustrating experience. Published in 1923, this history of the establishment of the Church of England in Maryland provides a list of the 21 churches established prior to 1691, a list of the counties with their parishes as established in 1692/3 and a list of the churches and their parishes as they existed in 1922. It also includes a description of each of the ten Maryland counties established prior to 1792 giving the derivation of the county name, the date of establishment, boundaries and alterations, a list of the hundreds in the county, a chronology of where court was held, the names and descriptions of the parishes, a list of the first vestrymen in each parish and a description of the early churches and ministers. (more...)

Spencer Ellsworth, RECORDS OF THE OLDEN TIME; OR FIFTY YEARS ON THE PRIARIES EMBRACING SKETCHES OF THE DISCOVERY, EXPLORATION, AND SETTLEMENT OF THE COUNTRY, THE ORGANIZATION OF THE COUNTIES OF PUTNAM AND MARSHALL, INCIDENTS AND REMINISCENCES CONNECTED THEREWITH..., (1880) 2008.

$14.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0602-DL

Previously hidden in this over 750-page unindexed volume (but now accessible via this searchable text version) are the names and origins of numerous settlers of Putnam and Marshall County, Illinois. Published in 1880, its author proposed "to trace the early settlement of that portion of our State embraced in the counties of Putnam and Marshall, gathering up the forgotten records of each township and neighborhood, and telling for the benefit of their descendants the story . . . of their ancestors." Part of the military land tract granted to veterans of the War of 1812 lay in present Putnam and Marshall counties and obviously drew many of the settlers to the area. (more...)

George S. McWatters, KNOTS UNTIED: OR WAYS AND BY-WAYS IN THE HIDDEN LIFE OF AMERICAN DETECTIVES, (1871) 2008.

$19.95 http://www.WhollyGenes.com/find_wg.mvc?ref...amp;p=US0383-DL

Witches, horse thieves, bank robbers, charlatans-skeletons in the closet of our family tree! Most of us enjoy the occasional "odd" ancestor if they're far enough back in the family tree. But can we document them. Family stories are often questioned and autobiographies no less so. And then there are the fake inheritances (and family trees) that make up those genealogical swindles. McWaters autobiography is filled with fodder for family trees. Whether or not all the events in McWaters's life are as they are described herein, some things can be documented. A 14 July 1880 New York Times news story notes his appearance at a reunion of the survivors of the 26th Precinct Police Station who were involved in the 1863 draft riot at the Tribune building.
