source citation for fields changed by a GEDCOM import

Recommended Posts

We are new to the Master Genealogist - ready to begin importing from the most recent version of Family Tree Maker. We are managing a growing database of GEDCOMS sent to us from members of the Swedish Colonial Society. Each GEDCOM needs a tagged citation such as, "Thanks to John Smith for family lineage/names submitted."

The second part of the question is how to tag or cite a source for many people without manually adding the same source citation for each name. Hope this is clear!

Thank you very much. The Rev. Cynthia Forde

Just to note. TMG v7.04 does not support the import of FTM 2010 or FTM 2011 databases. To import one of these databases, you need to export to a FTM 2008/2009 database in FTM and them import that FTM 2008/2009 database to TMG. When exporting, be sure to rename the FTM 2008/2009 database so that it does not overwrite your FTM 2010 or FTM 2011 database.

Re: GEDCOM import

When you import a GEDCOM and use the Advanced Import Wizard, on Step 5, you can select 'Cite GEDCOM file for all data'. That will create a citation to that source for all data. You can edit the source to change it to whatever you wish.

Alternatively, once a data set has been created, you can open the Master Source List, create a source (or use an existing source) and then, from the Master Source List, select a source and click [Cite Globally]. Use the dialog and a citation will be created to the source from all data in the data set.

There is no way to create a citation to a subset of the data set. You have to create a citation to each tag one-by-one.
