rustygutts 0 Report post Posted October 5, 2011 Hello: I'm new here and I purchased TMG version 7 about a half year ago. After reading information on all the available genealogy programs, I decided TMG would best suit my current and long-term needs. Each new thing I learn & use in TMG increases my love for the program. The current problem I have with TMG is assigning some type of family group number for each marriage. This wouldn't have been an issue for me but has become one due to a requirement of a genealogy class. I enrolled in a family history curriculum at Monterey Mid-Peninsula College in Monterey, California. The program is run and overseen by Karen Clifford, who also is CEO of a genealogy business located in Monterey and Salt Lake City, plus she publishes various genealogy texts. One of her requirements is that our genealogy programs automatically assign family group numbers to each marriage. She also refers to them as MRINs. Apparently TMG does not support this requirement. I've discussed this with Karen and her recommendation was for me to stick with TMG. She is more familiar with other programs. She does not use TMG professionally. She is impressed with the program but does not recommend it to her beginning students as she feels it has too steep of a learning curve. She recommended I get signed up to this forum and see if anyone here has any ideas about how to assign this number. If not, that's fine, she won't insist I use another program. However, she is requiring that I assign these numbers in a hard-copy index and manually keep track of them with a note at the top of each paper relating to that particular family group (which is a PITA). Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might get TMG to do this for me. Apparently, I'm the only student using TMG so I don't have any type of support through the class. Thank you for your time, Robert Royer rustygutts@hotmail.com
Jim Byram 0 Report post Posted October 5, 2011 TMG doesn't support MRINs as you have discovered. Ideas... Assign a Reference Number (Other Info box, upper right of Person View) to each spouse in a Marriage. The number could be displayed instead of the ID# in reports. Create a MRIN event tag type and add the tag with the spouses as P1 and P2 and enter the number in the memo field. Here's an existing discussion about MRINs... http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index...932&hl=MRIN

I had never heard of MRINs before but have been wondering if there was a way to group families by some kind of identifier. This will work for me too!
