Any problem using both XP and Win 7?

Recommended Posts

Recently received my v8 upgrade. Are there any known problems installing on one computer with XP and the other computer with Win 7?

Thanks, Judi

Only a very obscure one that I can think of. If you move a project between the two, and if you have external exhibits, and if you put them under "my documents" - the paths to them will be different on the two systems. If that is an issue for you there are a couple of possible solutions.

That will be an issue as all my exhibits are external and under "my documents". Would appreciate possible solutions. Thanks.

Dear Judi,

I use a flash drive. I have batch files on both machines for copying to the flash drive and then uploading them to the other machine. The batch files take and put the exhibits into the proper directories for each machine. One can use XCOPY or ROBOCOPY to do the actual copying. Both of these programs come with Windows 7 and XP. You need an "up" and a "down" batch file for each machine. They cannot be identical on both machines, because, of course, there are different directory structures for XP and Windows 7.

The general idea is to have the copy set up so that only new and newer files are copied over. Both XCOPY and ROBOCOPY have switches which allow you to do that. To get the proper syntax I recommend the help files built into the copy programs. You invoke them, say for XCOPY, by typing "xcopy /?" from a command prompt window.

I also keep TMG synchronized in the same way without using backup files. That requires some technical skill to set up, and of course one has to bear in mind which machine has the latest entries and never -- NEVER -- work on either machine if TMG changes have been made on the other. You must synchronize every time you switch machines if you are synchronizing your TMG data files. External exhibit synchronization alone requires less scrupulous care.

You will probably be advised by several knowledgeable people that synchronizing TMG data files as I have suggested is more dangerous. They are quite right -- but I have been doing it as I have suggested for more than ten years without a single glitch, and my technique saves the time of building and then restoring the backup every time I switch from my desktop machine to my laptop.

I'd be happy to share my batch files with anyone who wishes to inspect them.

All good wishes.

Robert

Judi,

The issue is that Windows XP and Windows 7 use different names for the path to "My Documents." No system for copying the exhibits will solved this problems. You need to solve it by putting them in folders with the same full path name. If you have a second hard drive, such as D:, you could put them there. But you can also put them in a simple location on the C: drive, such as C:/Exhibits or C:/TMG. Just use the same full name on both machines.

Now, about moving them. If they are all in a single folder, it's easy. You just copy them to the new folder, and then use the File > Maintenance > Validate File Integrity command. When the External Exhibits window pops up, check the box and use the button to specify the folder. Then run the procedure. It should fix all your exhibit paths. If you use the same folder name on both machines, you only have to do this on the first one on which you install the project under TMG 8.

If your exhibits are in multiple folders you need to specify all of them in the VFI process. I've never done that, but if you need help just ask and someone can help you.
