Reinstall on other than C drive?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit with, as some other posters here, a small SSD C: drive and a much larger "ordinary" hard drive, E.

When I installed Version 8, the program offered what I now understand to be the default folder for single-users: C-Users-[user]-AppData-Programs-TMG8.

I tried to change this to E-etc, but the program would not install. As I recall, I also tried to put it in E-ProgramFiles (x86)-TMG 8, but that wouldn't work either.

I eventually gave up and let it put itself where it wanted.

Would now like to correct this and get the program installed to my E drive.

I have read through many posts on this forum and on the rootsweb list. I've seen instructions there about deleting various folders from various places.

However, all the posts have emphasized that I must reinstall in EXACTLY the same folder as the previous installation - which is precisely what I DON'T want to do.

I have the 30-day trial of V 8.02 downloaded, and my data safely backed up. Is there any way to get rid of the old installation and put TMG where I want it?

Thank you,

Gary Ogle

You just found out why it's best to use a 120 or 128 GB SSD. Then you don't need to worry about what's on the boot drive.

However, all the posts have emphasized that I must reinstall in EXACTLY the same folder as the previous installation - which is precisely what I DON'T want to do.

The point of that is to make it easier for most users and the program will continue to use the existing data folders after the reinstall.

You need to understand exactly how TMG works and then you can do whatever you wish.

You can install the program to any drive and folder that you wish as long as the folder is in valid user space.

The installer will create an installer folder at: "C:ProgramDataThe Master Genealogist v8 Installer" You can't do anything about that but the contents are small and not a concern.

What you need to understand are the three data folders (created by the program, not by the installer). Also note that the name of the program folder determines the default names of the three data folders created by the program.

Read the Data File Storage topic, the topic under that topic and the two topics under that. You will want to use a Data_paths.txt file as described in one of the topics to set new default paths for the three data folders. That lets you get them off of the C: drive. It also lets you specify the names of the three data folders.

After the new data folders are created, you can copy any customized files from the three existing folders and delete the three original data folders.

After you read the help topics, ask if there is anything that isn't clear.
