can I save vcf reports as ".jpg" file types?

Recommended Posts

Can I save vcf reports as ".jpg" file types? It isn't an obvious choice upon saving, even as a "save as."

I am making a family tree photo book via a photo website. In the past I have printed the vcf reports, scanned them and saved them as ".jpg" file types so I can include them in the photo book. The image is fuzzy and the quality is not very good. If I could save the reports as ".jpg" file types it would be GREAT.

There is another way of creating a jpg version of a vcf chart - but I am confused about the second of the two ways.

When one clicks on a vcf chart (e.g "Ancestor Box Chart") in tmg, you are presented with two choices in the "Chart Destination" area: "View In Visual Chartform" and "Save To . . .". When one clicks on the "Save To . . ." choice, the "File Type" option is activated and one of the file type choices is "jpg". When one chooses that option, tmg immediately stores a jpg version of a chart under the designated "File Name", without ever opening the Visual Chart program. What seems to occur is that the chart saved as a jpg is the chart that would constructed under the vcf parameters that were in effect at that time - e.g. the "focus person" and the various other options under the "options" button. But this doesn't give one the chance of previewing the chart, except as a cumbersome two stage process.

Additionally, the default "File Name" choice is completely wrong and doesn't correspond to the default folder choices used elsewhere by tmg. For example, it shows "The Master Genealogist v7. . ." as a folder in the tmg 8 version.

I don't see that. If you have a fresh report configuration, the path defaults to the path for report_output on the project options Advanced tab in Preferences. If you are using a saved report configuration, the path will be whatever was saved in that configuration.

The VCF application can only edit charts saved in the native VCF format. As you noted, charts saved in graphics formats such as JPG and BMP cannot be edited by the VCF application.

In other words, if you copied your report definition from TMG7, the file location saved in that definition will be what you used in TMG7. This is true for all report definitions copied from a prior version - if you will be saving your reports in a different location with the new version you need to update each report definition.

I am not aware that I have ever copied any report definitions from a version 7 file. The path defaults to the path for report_output on the project options Advanced tab in Preferences have always been set properly to their version 8 settings. Once a proper file folder has been saved in TMG 8, however, TMG does recognize that folder.

But the problem seem deeper than that. Using "File Type: WordPerfect", I just tried to save a Journal Report to a specific folder: L:tpgtemp. I got the folder name by clicking on the ". . ." button in "Report Definition Screen - Journal Report", navigating to this specific folder, and then copying it via cut/paste into the "File Name" box. I then added the file name, "test" to the file folder name, yielding "L:tpgtemptest.wpd" as the final file name. When I clicked on "create report" I get an error message: "The folder L:tpgtest does not exist". When I manually enter the identical file name into the box, however, it goes just fine. Perhaps I am doing something wrong - but I don't know what it is.

When you moved your project to TMG8 did you make a backup in the old version and restore it in the new one? If so, did you include report definitions in the backup (I think they are included by default if you backup "settings")? If so, you did copy your report defs from the prior version.

I don't understand copying the folder by cut and paste. You should be able to navigate to the desired folder with the [...] button, select the folder, and click the Open button.

Yes, I probably did make a backup from an earlier version of TMG and then restored it in TMG 8.

The problem with the file folder name in the Report Definition Screen will not go away. I've tried to navigate to a folder, add the file name, and then click on "Open". I've also tried to cut and paste into the "File Name" box. As I've said, however, it goes just fine when I manually enter the file folder and name combination manually. It just happened to me again. I now find that it might only happen that way when there is the target file is a file with a string of folders in the destination (e.g. C:folder1folder2destination.wpd). Try it with some arbitrary multi-folder name, if you want to test it.
